Am i the only one who is getting a bit annoyed now with live letters? They know a large amount of English speaking people will be watching but they never have a translator...EU/NA community team if there isn't gonna be a translator don't bother advertising it to go watch it when majority don't understand. It seems like your just dismissing the whole English community by saying "Hey there is a Live Letter going to happen! But, you wont understand so watch anyway!" At least try to get someone there.
They recommend that you watch, but you don't understand anything but they do! Don't get me wrong its kinda great how fans in the English community do live translation and love those people who do it. They are doing one tomorrow and its Japanese only...When its stuff on pre-order information for Heavensward =_=. I don't want to wait how long just for the team to translate it when they say we should watch live.
Hey that's just my opinion anyway but it is just getting annoying for me now :/ I hope in the future they consider putting a translator there for us. I believe if they actually had one more people would watch.
I wouldn't mind if they translate it quicker, by the time they release it i don't even care anymore. They always say stuff which relates to the slide and i cant fully understand it and left in the dark lol. We need our Reinheart back if they leave it like this ;-;Quote:

It would be impossible to have a translator dub it in real time, like with the PAX conference, but agree that they should make it easier for English speakers and other regions or that matter to understand what is being said.
I stopped watching the live letters for the simple fact that even when they show concept art and videos you still don't know what they are talking about which makes it mostly pointless.
They should work on translating the live letter quicker IMO. -

Also yes slides in English but they always go more in depth when it appears and that is missed details until people translate it. The way they are doing it is fine (in my opinion), but like you said at the end, i would like to see the Q&A Summary to be released sooner. Maybe a few days after the Live Letter, rather than a few weeks after the broadcast. I would also like to see the regular Letters of the Producer again, which they released at least once a month.
However, it might not be an full transcript of the Letter of the Producer Live, but our friendly neighbourhood Community Reps do give a translated Q&A of each letter while the Live Letter is being broadcasted as well as a Q&A Summary later on (in multiple languages).

For me, the main reason why i still watch the Live Letters is that i get to see the Presentation Slides (in 2 languages), see concept art, in-game images and video’s like “Tour of the North”, the introduction of the Au Ra and the new Jobs.
For everything else, i’ll read through the Q&A and wait for the “full transcript” they release at a later date. -

Live translations is a difficult skill to start with, and doing them for a game is even more difficult since whoever's doing the translating needs to know a lot about the game, and in most instances about the lore, in order not to accidentally give away too much info, or mistranslate things completely. The letter where they do have live translations are often (partially) prepared beforehand and don't have any surprise questions.
Considering the upcoming one is mostly about the CE, and not about actual game content, I guess they could've done a live translation, but then people will start to expect live translations for every live letter :) -

It should have never been left for the community to translate in the first place, it just screams lazy and shows an attitude of disinterest to non Japanese speakers.
Don't get me wrong when they do make an effort like at PAX they did a great job and the translator did an amazing job, they should prob put more effort in to translating these letters leading up to the expansion because everyone has a lot of questions they want answered. -

Just as a side question, what did happen with Rienhart? Did SE hire him? I knew something happened because he had at some point stopped doing translations for us but I must have missed what exactly. I know he used to post on the forums occasionally too with always helpful posts.

There is an entire profession that provides simultaneous translation service. Seems like they could contract a translator for all of these "live" events if they gave a damn at all about keeping non-Japanese customers informed.

As someone said they may say they are doing it fast but lets be honest they are not, i mean if a guy can live translate and get most of it correct then it just shows they are not going as fast as they could. I don't want to cause any arguements though im just stating my opinion the matter and i just want to hear what most of you guys think. -

Live translation is fine as it is, because it cost way too much...
We are getting fast and good summery from Questions in forums, its ok!
The problem i really have and why i am so upset is, that they used to have subbed videos some weeks later...
For any unknown reason they stopped to sub them and just give larger forum summeries - i do not like those!
As some already said, players are no longer watching it and wait for translated videos made by fans or websites with photos... -

Although there always seems to be somebody live translating anyways I have to agree with the OP that SE should be doing official live translations for these letters. I find it very unfair to the non-JP community that we need to rely on some random person to translate for us out of the good of their heart. If they have the ability to translate some things like fan fest, then I would say they have the ability to translate live letters too.
That said, I have to give a warm thank you to those people who translate for us, without them we would truly be at a loss here. In my opinion the Q&A just doesn't cut it compared to actually watching the live letter.. live and in addition to that they don't release a translated subtitled version weeks later like they used to which makes the situation even worse. -

SE has no excuse not to be doing more to cater to their English speaking community. They have proven on multiple occasions that they already have people in the company that can do the translations right there on the Live Letter and not make us have to wait or use fan translations. Even Tabata uses a translator when he does his Active Time Reports.

I just did a quick Google to find out how much simultaneous translation costs. It depends on the language (Spanish to English is cheaper in the US than other languages for example - one example i saw for Vegas conferences was $650 per day for S/E, $750 for Portugese/English). Roughly it would cost about $1000 for a day worth of service, during which time the translator would be briefed on the general content and special terms as well as perform the translation. Times 3 for English, French and German. $3000 to turn a "JP onry" live letter into a true live letter that talks to all official markets.

i will be a bit silly, but you know that SE do have live translator in them employee? i means them company have japanese and english speaker branch, how do you think they do them meeting about important point? they don't wait 1 month for get the information.
the translator while the english event (any event outside japan) are from SE company.... do it will cost them more money? no, since they are already paid for work for them.
what bother me more than live translation is the sub version that simply not present anymore, Fansub can be done in less of 1-2 hours now..... they can't do it? i means maybe not in 1-2 hours, but seriously they can't dispatch translator from them company to do the translation and after let someone do the sub on the video?
actually the truth, is they don't really care of the people outside japan.... because it's rude to act like they do. you can't make me believe that SE, that do game in multiple language, can't use some people from the translation team for the live letter... i means, when you try to communicate with the playerbase, you try at least to touch a maximum of person... not only a portion.
people will say: "yes, but for the non english speaker?"
i will answer: "it's far easier to find people for translate english to any other language than find people that can translate japanese"
ps: i'm french, i simply find it rude to not try to offer a decent communication with the rest of the world and only care for the japanese playerbase! -

Now why is it so long to make an official translation ? Because it has to be perfect. Not only do they have to keep the sense of what has been said, bu they also have to make actual sense with all the info given (literal translation being an atrocious way to do it btw). It takes time to have a real translation when it's your work. The translation also has to be officially approved by your boss has you might have release unwanted info because, as you're part of the team, you know things that weren't said and which could influence your translation.
Fan translations and official translations are two different worlds. If you can't see/accept that, well I feel sorry for you. -

who here did ask for perfection? none of us.... and more important, like i have said i'm more for a sub version of the live letter. and they have the people for do it. however, it was often the case that we do get information 1-2 week after japanese. the best example is how often is the fan that brought information from the japanese forum to the other forum and we need to wait a long time for get the official version.
seriously, it make them either rude or uncompetent. or do explain me something, why nintendo can do it when they can't do it? they have a clear communication with all them fanbase, here SE have restart to lack communication skill with a large part of the community is bad in many way.
other point, if it was not possible to do it, why do we get Q/A on the forum? it means they can do it.... they simply don't want to do it. that not a conspiracy theory dude, this is fact. when you want to communicate with the whole playerbase you do it.... there is not them goal!

I dont get why people say its too expensive for live translation. Or its just too hard to do. They did it at the fan fests and pax. Whats so hard about having Koji Fox or that women whos name I dont know there to explain in english what is going on? Id rather it take a little longer and I actually know whats being said than it be shorter and not have a clue. The Q&A stuff that gets posted on the forums leaves alot of stuff out and there have even been times where whats posted in the q&a has been wrong and had to be corrected. Or worded so oddly that nobody even understands the meaning.
Guarantee tomorrow the forums will be full of posts about how unclear the answers are in the Q&A and how we still dont know the answers people wanted even though it was covered in japanese during the live letter. -

They also ignore rather important things that are stated outside of the questions themselves, such as the last letters 2.51 release date that was revealed at the end of the stream. I mean, granted that it wasn't part of the questions themselves, but that really just comes off as odd that it'd take them that long to either do or get the approval to release Q&A for something already out to the public since it was done live. Assuming they're not being restricted on what they can say for those Q&A posts, which would be extremely odd protocol, I'm going to assume that they're just posting something they're given by a translator elsewhere. Honestly, it'd be a much better approach to provide a translated outcome of everything stated, not just Q&A, if they're going to release something weeks after it's done. Doesn't have to be word for word, since there's a lot of fillers noises (e.g. "umm") but the gist of it is good enough, similar to what they do with the questions themselves.Quote:
