How do newly chreated characters / new players supposed to progress naturually

From lvl's 1-50 you pretty much can progress through that like its been since 2.0's relaunch, but once you get to lvl 50 the game seems to want to push you from like i50 to i100.

I created a new character just to craft,farm,gather, but I'm getting to the point I may be getting into adventuring again.

It will be like when I play single player games I always progress the same way each time I playthrough them, but with fffxiv that seems like that wont be possible.

It sux for new players to once they hit 50 and can't experience the game like we did in the past, or is it still possible to progress naturally with endgame, from 2.0 to 2.4?

It also seems like you would get Caried through all the older content aswell, and some people would like a challenge :(

Now that the super cheap i90 gear from hunts is gone, you actually have to start running dungeons and farming drops. Or you buy gil and buy the crafted ilvl 90 (no new player will be able to afford the AH prices).

With 2.4 it got 20-40x more time consuming to get to a point where you can go random expert.

Kinda a lame change if you ask me, considering the fact that poor peeps needing dungeon drops get trolled by outdated shitty craftmat drops.

Step 1: get CT1 full gear
step 2: get antique gear from the new dungeons
step 3: buy ilevel 100 gears you earned from CT1 and the new dungeons and get ilevel90 gears with
the ancient gears


Step 1: do duty roulettes until you have enough tomes to buy enough ilevel 100 gears for average ilevel 70
step 2: farm CT2 until you have many oils
Step 3: buy the other ilevel 100 sold gears and upgrade them to ilevel 110 with the oils from CT2

It sucks, but there's a pretty big leap now. Farming dungeons for the ilvl 90 gear is a waste of time. You're casting lots against multiple players, many of whom just want it for desynthesis skill, and you have to participate in high level dungeons to even get a shot. Prior to getting to that ilvl, every single dungeon now drops soldiery tomes which can be used to purchase level 100 gear. Welcome to progression SE style.

Why...? CT gear is worthless now too! ST gear is far more relevant, but even then it's now meaningless thanks to the abundance of soldiery tomes. Given that you can work towards ilvl 100 as a fresh-faced level 50 character now that every dungeon drops those tomes, there's no reason to do any of that content aside from a change of pace.

Call me crazy if you will, but the whole point of philosophy and mythology tomes were to enforce a nice steady progression. You worked towards Philo gear, then you built up Myth gear. It made sense. Then they ditched Philo, making Darklight a worthless random drop. Now they've done the same to mythology gear. SE just don't understand steady progression.

I don't even know how many soldiery you can get if you don't have the item level to run the higher dungeons.
Remember: the dungeons that drop Ilvl 90 need ilvl 80 ALREADY EQUIPPED (at which farming I 90 would be a waste of time, I agree). The op was talking about fresh 50s with an avg ilvl ~ 50.
Might even have to farm daily story / low level roulette.

Myth gear is at the same time also still a tome gear. The tomes for it are now the antique gears you can find in the new dungeons.
1 antique gear for each body part, and you have the choise for what job you want it.

It would've been better if the Ilevel sync was made a little more tighter to provide for the relevant content, instead of a flat 110 post 50

The sheer number of 50+ dungeons/raids is enough to help new players along. You can't progress the same as us Day 1ers obviously, but that's a side effect of the vertical progression. Poetics and Soldiery still work the same as Philo and Myth. You can collect Soldiery from every 50+ dungeon + roulettes so ultimately the new player is farming for i100s. In the meantime they're getting clears for each dungeon and likely collecting random dungeon gear as well. Weapons are probably the biggest hurdle since the Sol Weps are the only tome buyable weps and need a UAT so to even get those you need to either build your relic, farm a Primal wep, or buy a wep off the MB of a higher ilevel so you can run ST for the UAT.

Getting Relict shouldn't be a problem. There are now enough overgeared players and the Echo to make the hard primal fights easy.

The point is, by the time you're geared enough to run those dungeons you've already outgrown it. Also, it's still a random drop in a chest. There's no guarantee you'll get the headpiece, legs or body. It's entirely guesswork as to which armor drops in the dungeon, and you're still lotting against other players to obtain it. Tomes are earned regardless.

As for how much soldiery you get, I'd say you get sufficient enough amounts to gear up even on lower tier dungeons like Amdapor Keep. The downside now is that they've effectively cut off some players from being able to use Duty Roulette because... well, they're stupid. They've gone and attached the old 'extreme' roulette dungeons to the hard mode roulettes effectively increasing the ilvl requirement and the total number of dungeons you need to complete before it unlocks.

I think SE just hates new players.

There's something to consider here: the game reached a stage where intermediate gear is becoming relevant.

In 2.3, you could get some nice i90 gear in almost no time, thanks to the Hunt and the myth tomstones raining from the sky without much effort.
Being i90 in the 2.3 era was good enough to do most of the content without too much problems in order to start getting i100-i110 stuff to do Ex Primals and Coil.
So, long story short, you could very easily jump from i50 to i90+ stuff in almost no time.

But now, things have changed. Getting Soldiery is harder than previously and you can't really gear yourself up with the Hunt anymore (or, at least, not as easily as it was in 2.3). Since you won't be able to really farm Poetics if you are freshly 50, and that it your take quite some time and investment to get Soldiery i100, you have to find something else between your i50 and the i100-i120.

So, what's left? Well, if you are a fresh 50, chances are that the market boards are not available to you, unless you made a ton of gils in some way. Therefore, the only real things left are: dungeon gears.
You'll now have to farm some dungeon to start getting your iLv up with intermediate pieces of equipement such as the good ol' Darklight and the i80 stuff. Only then you'll be able to go into CT1, get some more gear and then start doing CT2 in order to get closer to i80-100 to start farming Soldiery efficiently.

I think the way 2.4 made the gear evolve, but also the way to obtain it is very clever. It give a fresh new use to the abandonned stuff below i100, which was completly ignored during 2.3.
By adding new content and raising the difficulty of obtaining the new "i100-i110 base", SE managed to bring back old content into the scene for fresh 50 players to use... personnaly, I find that very well done.


tl;dr: People now have to stop thinking that running dungeons for i70-i80 stuff is useless, because that stuff just became more relevant to the character progression towards end-game.

they just get the best gear available (ToP gear) like everyone else, the rest of the gear is irrelevant, can be collect for glamour

I think most of what is said here is totally innacurate since none of you are actually new players and are just making assumptions. I am a new player who is still under the one month free trial (4 days left) and I just reached 50 not long ago.

So, far, I have not actually outgeared any content and all the gear I get are usable. I have cleared Ifrit, Garuda, Titan Ex and all the high level dungeons so far through the DF, after I barely made the ilvl requirements. I can assure you we don't lose anything not being able to do roulette right away. The gear progressions is just fine.

Of course, we won't be able to do content at the same difficulty as release but that is the nature of all MMOs. Old content need to be easy to allow new players to get a party easily by making it attractive for old players to do those old dungeons. One of the difficult things new players face in an MMO is getting to the same tier as the rest of the playerbase. As of now, I think SE is doing a great job. It is neither too fast nor too slow to catch up to the current playerbase. Once we get to your level, then we can experience content at the same difficulty as everyone. If gear progression is too slow or old content still too hard, then it will be impossible for us new players to reach to the current content. We would forever be playing catch-up, until an expansion releases where gear is reset.

So, I must say good job to SE. Sure there are problems like slow queue times for DF and players wanting to disband after 1 wipe but that is a problem of the playerbase and not SE. As of now, SE is making FF14 a great experience for new players at 50 to catch up to the current playerbase, unlike any of the other MMOs I have played where it is either impossible to reach the current content or too fast.

@OP - at my own experience of playing a level 50 character as warrior, I'm simply gearing up from each dungeon. I'll queue up for Amdapor Keep, and Wanderer's Palace (believe it or not some of those dungeons can offer somethings worth of value to yourself and others) I get that tank gear, then i move on to, Pharos, Copperbell, and Haukke.

Again some items in some of these dungeons worth of value. Plus the accessories from these are great, for i60 gear.

then Move onto Brayfox, Halatali, and Amdapor Ruins, for the i70 gear, this is where I'm stuck and have been for sometime now (I play slower than most). But it's pretty solid progression and fun. I have have some encounters where people will complain to me. But we progress pretty rapidly either way, just not break-neck speed.

As for the weapons, Primals are your friends :) I did, give-or-take 10 ifrit runs for my Axe, and like eight Garuda Runs for my i70 axe. As soon as i'm geared with full i70 (including accessories with the exception of the one ring). I'll start doing Titan.

I'm having a blast doing it though :) I'm having a lot of fun doing this and it's more of a personal challenge and if this is the road you might want to use as a template, I'm glad I was able to give you some ideas.

My answer. Run all the 50 content once. The content tiers nicely and gives a new 50 player a whole lot to do while gearing and improving their skills against mechanics. At any point on this list you could choose to rerun a dungeon for another loot chance and that will only help you further.

Step 5: Unlock the Labyrinth of the Ancients (Level 50) (iLvl 55). Obtain i80 piece.

Step 7: Run new Expert dungeons and possibly obtain some i90 gear tokens for turn in.
- Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard) (Level 50) (iLvl 70)
- Stone Vigil (Hard) (Level 50) (iLvl 70)
- Hullbreaker Isle (Level 50) (iLvl 70)
- Sastasha (Hard) (Level 50) (iLvl 80)
- The Sunken Temple of Qarn (Hard) (Level 50) (iLvl 80)
- Snowcloak (Level 50) (iLvl 80)

-- At this point you're probably in the i90s. Maybe even further than that based on your luck. --
Step 8: Ultima for possible accessories.

Step 9: Run Ex primals ifrit, garuda, and Titan. This get's you both experience in tougher fights and good accessories to upgrade your right side. Also your first completion gives you another weapon giving you an option to skip the relic step if you're gutsy.

Step 10: Run First Coil through once.

Step 11: Use Soldiery and Poetics gained from doing each dungeon once to fill out holes in gear. You'll likely have a bunch of points by now.

Step 12: Start practicing and looting Second coil and running weekly dungeons. This will get you your baseline i110 gear and start moving you to i120. Wash, rinse, and repeat each week.

Step 13: Full on end game in coil 3.

I feel this would only serve to make them take longer and be potentially less appealing to a majority of end game players, for the sake of the minority who actually want them to be a challenge while no longer relevant. Most players running roulettes are not doing so to go enjoy old content as it was meant to be experienced initially, they're doing it for the bonus roulette rewards. Making these duties more of a hassle would likely mean less end game players doing them, which would potentially mean less people queuing and longer wait times for the new players actually progressing through the content. I agree with SE's decision here; it would be a bad business decision to take the risk and make older content more difficult and time consuming than what end game players are used to, unless they reasonably increase the rewards.

It isn't for the difficulty. there can be large disparities between the ilvl of players that enter tge content as it is. New players that go into these fight with a decked out player, if they are a tank or healer role, may find it difficult to perform their role due to the vast difference in damage output and speed in dungeon attempts which leads to deaths and/or arguing.

What amuses me in all of this is you are all assuming that the OP wanted a guide on how to gear. From what I read, the OP is asking how do you do a path of content from 2.0 to 2.4 without missing out on the challenge that was initially there when the content was released.

OP: If you are looking for the content to progress in a similar fashion and still be challenging, you should find 3 other like minded individuals. This would let you challenge each dungeon along the way in gear that is the iLvl that the dungeon was designed for. If you are relying on DF and hoping to do this solo, it is not likely that it will happen as those who have been in the game for the last year have no interest in gearing down to an instance that they have cleared time and time again.

It is a shame that a new player won't get to experience many fights in the game that were great fights which will never be the same. AK, Ultima, Titan, Caduceus, etc. Even I miss when those were fun and challenging.

BCoB T1 is unlocked at ilvl70 and drops i90s. With nerfs and speedrunners for gear/desynth, it's basically faceroll content now and great for gearing up.

Well, I suspect that is is easier to just skip to 100 for experienced players. I have some friends at end game that still have no idea what they're doing when it comes to their gears ilvl.

This is an MMO you arent suposed to go level 1-50 + ilvl120 within a week.

Create a new tank or healer and progression will be natural and normal.

It's probably going to take them as long as it did for me to get to DL after release... No they won't ding 50 and jump into expert roulette... But they will be able to work thier way up through the level 50 dungeons gaining soldiery and potentially drops as they go. There's just not any easy way to jump right in to the most relevant end game content within a week. It will take some time and planning.

Also CT gear drops aren't going to be as useful as soldiery but they are ilvl80 which helps the ilvl requirements for more dungeons and it drops a decent amount of soldiery so it's probably a good place to go as a fresh 50.

I don't think CT is the way to go for boosting ilvl. The queues are way too long now to be worthwhile.

Do frontlines - get easy wolf marks and buy all the i90 gear, ez pzee. Rankless i90 gear equivalent to PvE gear and the grind is 100x more fun the hunts and faster too

Not to put too fine a point on it, but considering how easy it is to get Soldiery tomes even WITHOUT level 60+ gear, I fail to see how you can consider it a progression. The soldiery gear, I remind you is level 100 and you can earn these tomes on the basic dungeons.

So, in short. Do Amdapor Keep, do Wandering Palace. Both of those are easy enough even in your quested AF gear. Both drop soldiery tomes which are used to purchase level 100 gear. If you get an upgrade in the meantime, great. Equip it. But it's not worth RELYING on those random drops any more. By the time you've found the piece you want, you could've EARNED a better one.

New players get a soldiery bonus on top of the base soldiery reward the first time they do a dungeon, considering they have to clear each dungeon once to unlock high level roulette this alone ensures a big amount of soldiery over the time, people also get ~200 soldiery per main scenario roulette if there's a new player, which is most of the time.

By the time you unlock most dungeons you should have enough gear drops AND soldiery accessories to overcome the ilvl requirement for Titan HM, at that point you can get your zenith relic, unlock CT, unlock ST and run ST for i100 drops, UAT, oil and sand, along with soldiery, also run T1, T2 and T4 for the first time bonus + i90 drops, by then your ilvl should be high enough to unlock expert dungeons, and by then you should have a somewhat steady income of soldiery to keep upgrading pieces to i110, while still having some i100 pieces from ST and slowly working towards poetic gear.

This of course will take several days (no more than a week tho) but you are not supposed to get full i110 gear right as you get to 50.

tl;dr you guys assume too much, gear progression is fine, it's not hard for a fresh 50 to catch up, I find it a lot better than early 2.2.

EDIT: don't forget about S rank hunts, they give 50 soldiery for doing nothing but zerging monsters that take 2~3 mins to be killed, if you get into an active hunting linkshell and also happen to be online when most S ranks spawn that's a really nice soldiery boost, you can also use the seals for extra soldiery pieces and any log that drops for extra sands/oils.

Well... starting out the first time around...tons of little exclamation marks everywhere, without much indication where to go or what to do exactly. I remember that clearly, it was kind of overwhelming. Especially together with the map that also needed discovering. Main scenario did a good thing leading me through that, though, as well as to some extent the class/job I wanted to play.

Honestly, if you follow those meteor signs (that is the main story markers), you can't really go wrong. The rest is optional, just do them whenever you're ready - the duty finder takesyour hand to guide you there with the ilvl requirements. Not saying it's completely accurate or reliable, but considering it won't let you do stuff below certain item levels at least gives you the goal to aim for. Soldiery is dropping all over the place, going from wherever you can with your AF gear (and then relic) just collecting that is easy to suit up to ~i100. Which then practically opens the doors for everything else too.

Really, it just is overwhelming, but not actually as big a chaos imo. ^^ And yes, you're pretty much carried through low-level stuff nowadays, but you can always try looking for people who are either doing them while leveling up or to spiritbond stuff (meaning they won't be overgeared).

This is becoming a new alarming occurrence in my FC, i am i93, we have many new folk at 50 with the same ilvl yu mention and then come weekend time in FC chat: COIL? COIL! COIL! COIL! However the rest of the week, those fresh 50s in our FC are so discouraged and disenfranchised because while they aren't gated and CAN do the content, the ilvl race is making FFXIV way more end-game than I ever imagined. WTF cares if WOW is i553 - I DO NOT PLAY WOW. This game isn't fun anymore.

Something that nobody ever brings up is how ridiculous starting a fresh relic weapon is going to be, not just now, but even further on.

500 soldiery is significantly harder to obtain than 1500 myth was. Hunt soldiery rewards should be doubled.

There's also the issue of Chimera and Hydra needing i52 average on your character to even queue up for the fights. And as you HAVE to do those for your relic, you're pretty much gated until you get out of your basic HQ jewelry (yes, accessories do play a role in determining your average ilvl).

However, I think it's also a good incentive for new players to pick up crafting/gathering early on to AT LEAST help support their accessory/weapon/food needs (FSH/CUL/MIN/GSM and one other). People always say "Oh, it's too expensive, you'll never afford all the mats", well... 'tis your own damned fault for wanting an easy road to 50.

And besides, all those "worthless mats" in the 4-mans that you ignore and demeaned has spread to T1-4... except this time, they ain't useless to roll on. I should know - I was part of a T4 farm group earlier, and they weren't there for the gear; they wanted the Ores and stuff.

This is only the case if you were excuslively looking at hunts (which were overpowered as far as how much rewards it gave)
Getting 500 soldierly from roulette bonuses (and especially first time bonuses) is significantly easier than getting 1500 myths, while getting 500 soldierly from normal dungeon rewards is more or less the same as getting 1500 myths.

First-timers get 50-100 bonus soldierly tomestones on their first clear. That amount was not changed from 2.3 and the amount is pretty substantial. Though I do agree that there is a bit of a drought of options for a fresh player who recently completed their main story scenario...especially bard/ninja because quest rewards just love to skip out on DEX accessories. The scarce amount of gear drop from the starter heroic dungeons (AK, copperbell and haukke) doesn't help it either espesically with how much content is ahead of them.

Sure intermediate gear is more relevant now, doesn't necessarily mean it's more obtainable. Though the bonus soldierly from the first set of heroic dungeons should put you on your way of at least getting a piece of weathered gear (to meet the ilvl requirements for trials)

The key difference between the Allagan crafting mats and the other stuff is that the Allagan mats drop in addition to the regular gear drops, not in place of. Frankly, if that's how it worked for the regular dungeons as well I doubt people would complain as much. I know I'd be a whole lot happier about running dungeons if that were the case.

I can earn 100 soldiery during 1 roulette in 2.4
I couldn't earn 300 myths during 1 roulette in 2.3

tome rewards in hunt was unbalanced.

got my second 50 a week ago and walked into ST around i70~

one week later (about 3 runs, got a little luck with mostly blm drops ill admit) i got the entire left side to i100... right side will take a little more time due to spending all my sold tombs on alex maps... so am i missing something here?
