How exactly are they supposed to attack his back if he's in the water?
We don't know all the details to the fight.
pretty much showed how it worked leviathan didn't seem to get on the platform thing and stayed at the edges in the water with his head popped out worse design ever!
that does seem like a problem
good thing I'm not a melee!
depends on what tanking is for Leviathan fight.
From the look of the video Leviathan will randomly pop up on one of the four sides of the boat and switch over time.
Tanking could be mostly just to make Levi attack the tank for some skills but most of his attack could be random targeted or direct attack at the boat.
Well, they could always set it up where all attacks give the bonuses (auto assume it was a flank/rear hit) for his zone. I'm not getting my hopes up though.
Can someone link the video please? :D
Don't say I left you with nothing.

lol @ complaining about a fight before it has even been fought
I can't imagine, considering it's already been done with the tail of Toto-Raks boss, that it would be too hard for them to make the target a specific part of Leviathan (his face, yo) with everything else floating behind him and only really being for show. If that's the case, he sticks his head over the side just enough so the DPS can get behind it. Wouldn't be terribly difficult.
Of course, the fight could also work in a completely different manner too, sort of like the Copperbell Hard midboss; you don't directly damage Leviathan, instead you do something else to damage him.
Don't get too ahead of yourself, I merely meant that tanks obviously can hit him from melee range as the vid you linked later clearly shows. So i'm guessing melee can too, right?
Melee can't hit Demon Wall in the back but since when have they ever been useless in that fight?
We've seen very little of the battle itself, got to love these lol melee threads though.
Or hell, who says that Leviathan's back needs to be in the same place his front is?
Have you seen how long he is? Could well be head and tail are different targets and the tail always has the back facing towards the party from a different direction. It'd have some eventual tail swipe attacks while the head does most of the heavy damage.
He moves them around the ship, the tank tries to keep the head on him so he doesn't obliterates the party while the DPS focus on the tail.
People are so eager to complain they will anticipate melee issues from a 20 second teaser video.
Forums... Forums never change.
Luckily, melee don't need to be behind the mob do their job.
Also, Demon Wall says hi.
Fighting a water boss from the edge of a boat/shore/whatever isn't anything new in Final Fantasy.
3D manoeuvre gear?

i think the moment Leviathan jump over the boad a DRG jump over Leviathan, land on his back, attack and jump back to the boad before Leviathan dive into the water again.
Yet, after all that stuff, they're still able to do damage! Huzzah, Eorzea is saved!
To the bolded part:

You would have to halt your DPS to wait for his rear attack to go off if you planned on doing it every time. It's more beneficial to just spam from the side where it's safe.Quote:

I don't think you understand. Dragoons literally do not have access to some of their combos if they cannot get behind. It isn't just a damage loss, it means their abilities do not do what they would otherwise do.
Even if you think it isn't an issue, that doesn't mean it is true. Melee performance has been an issue in this game since day 1, so it is natural to be concerned at this point.
Even the devs know melee are often at a disadvantage.
Which Dragoon abilities cannot be done if not executed from behind? I'm not talking the higher potency either, I mean which ones cannot be used at all. Looking at my Dragoon list now, I'm not seeing a single one.
EDIT:
Ah, Impulse Drive has to proc from behind to initiate the next part of the combo. I never play DRG, so I was unaware of this. None of MNK's combos have this. I see where DRG will have issues with this fight. Hopefully this gets fixed before 2.2.
Funny, I seem to do just fine at my job even if I'm not always behind something. Yes, my damage suffers a bit when I can't get my boosts from flanking, but it does not at all impair my ability to do damage, which is what my entire job is about.
It's always better for melee to be behind something, but we do not NEED to be in order to perform our basic job. We don't just suddenly become unable to use any skills when we aren't behind something.
And again, we can't infer a whole lot about Leviathan's fight mechanics based on such a short video that doesn't even show fighting, just shows Leviathan being his regal self and throwing water everywhere. Why don't we all try to lower the amount of doomsday-for-melee talk until we actually see more of how the fight itself works.
Why couldn't we have some kind of magitek surf boards created by Cid to fight him on instead of a huge inexplicable platform? Maybe have to dps down his fin or something before he tidal waved us all.
Like titan on the seas.
I know you're being intentionally ignorant, but the entire Impulse Drive combo line simply will not work without a back to attack, meaning a straight 10% damage loss to the DRG (and any BRDs) and the loss of a 500 potency attack.
If you honestly think making two attacks 100 potency for an entire encounter is anywhere in the realm of "it's still usable guys!" then you must be trolling.
Wait .. are we playing the same game? I manage to get my True Strikes off just fine through the entire fight. Baiting the tail swipe is part of the fight, and I'll always bait it with the Dragon Kick animation or ToD or Fracture. To date, I have never** mistimed a rear attack in that fight and gotten creamed.
**Except my very first time in there when the explaining dude explained the fight in Spanish then pulled >_>
Huh? You'll be OP because you can ... Impulse Drive//Disembowel//Chaos Thrust whenever you want? Just like ... Now?
With all that kicking and water spitting, I wonder if it isnt best to have 6 aromred OffTanks and 2 Healers?
Are you guys seriously complaining a fight that we know ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT?
I think it's pretty obvious that is one of those phase preset animation....Just like every other primal. i.e. OMG HOW ARE WE GOING TO ATTACK TITAN IF HE JUMPS OFF THE SCREEN.
I bet the fight will start off the tank gets hate while ranged attacks make him fall onto the boat and melee attack him till he goes back into ranged attack mode.
Seems like a good idea how the fight would be if he is out in the water or she I don't know what gender the water summon is.
Second one to 5 of the video you can very clearly see the tail of Leviathan as a separate target. I fail to see the problem. Some people are such drama queens.
