Did they change it to slashing? I remember it was confirmed to be buffed by Dragon Kick(Blunt Damage) before.
But I haven't kept up with SMN changes or the Ifrit buff.

Did they mention any skill rework?
Outside of Tri-Disaster becoming Tri-Bind and making a new Tri-Disaster that applies Bio II, Miasma, and Bio, no.
It's buffed by the WAR and NIN slashing buffs, so I guessed it was slashing. Is it just physical in general and benefits from all physical damage buffs?Quote:

Hooray for tri-disaster actually DOING what the skill name implies.
Unfortunately SMNs aren't getting any new egis at all... Major disappointment there after Yoshi already said we were last year. Instead we 'may' get some cosmetic system to change the appearance of egis but it's being worked on so no idea when or what form that will take. The new Dreadwyrm Trance that gives us Bahamut's skills was nice but the lack of new egis has left me with mixed feelings.
They also said something about adding new action to the current Egis and improving them, aside from the posible appearance changes. I wanted new Egis too, but if they give me to choose between new summons or improving the ones already in the game... I choose the improvement.
And that Bahamut powerup... *Screams like a fangirl*
The Bahamut Trance is very good, and Tri-Disaster change too :D
But the Summoner need more then just 3 Egis...at leaste leave the option to summon Carbuncle that is a shame we can't :S
I have in the near future and not in the second expansion we get some new Egies to replace Ifrit Titan and Garuda!
Looks like Bahamut's Trance and tr-disaster are the solution for SMN burst damage. From what I read/heard, it looks like with 3 aetherflow stacks you can do Tri-Disaster -> Fester -> another Fester -> Bahamut's Trance -> Akh Morn. just speculating...
Didnt they mention something about Carbuncle too?
I think they just said that you'll eventually be able to re-skin the current egis with carbuncle skins.
So no more new egi? Good job Yoshi, I'm so disappointed..... Summoner doesn't need a pet glamour system but new pets ç_ç
I'm gonna go to cry right now!
Summoner with no new summons... brilliant :(
Any chance we can get a Zodiac Weapons trade system so we can swap mains? >_<

Im just loving this.
A bunch of people that cant play the SMN properly as it is, asking for sweeping changes with little regard to game balance. If the changes went through im pretty sure 95% of those players would then bitch about something else, because they wont be able to play the new SMN either.
TL;DR People are bad and have no idea about how to balance a game.
Okay I just read the developers notes on the new job abilities, and they confirmed no new egis. I enjoy summoner, I defended summoner, stating that with new egis and more viable options summoner would feel more like people wanted, but hearing this I am disappointed. While I will need to see how the new summoner plays I think I might be joining the people stating that summoner isn't a real summoner. Because, to not give them new summons just seems weak. Hopefully by 3.1 we get the reskins as levi, shiva, ramuh. Hell I would of taken that now, but to sorta get nothing, feels lame. Glad I main Scholar, lol?
After watching the Live Letter and reading all the threads/comments here, I do get why they chose to hold off on new Egi (no point having a multitude of different looking Egi that do the exact same thing/or a series of totally unique Egi that would be difficult to balance alongside a job overhaul) However I feel the whole point of the SMN is to be able to summon a multitude of different Summons, and I worry what this change to SMN may mean for the future.
That being said this new Egi glamour system could be the perfect compromise when considering game mechanics/balancing. Since there is no real elemental wheel in play in FFXIV, with no particular element being strong/weak to another, there is no real way to implement new unique Egi easily without treading on the toes of other existing Egi or creating more balancing issues. However by just having the Summon I/II/III abilities (Ranged/Tank/Melee) and then allowing the SMN to glamour a skin over the top will allow us to have an Egi of every single Primal!
I assume the glamoured Egi's abilities will also get new visuals based on the glamour in play, giving the impression of a totally new Egi with new abilities but with the actual mechanics of either the Ranged/Tank/Melee Egi types. This would prevent any future Egi balancing issues and allow SE to just create a whole bunch of new Egi for us to unlock (via new Austerities quests) and then glamour. This also adds a level of customization to SMN, allowing us to pick and choose our favorite trio of Egi from a potentially wide selection.
So quite frankly if that's truly the only way future Egi can be implemented then I will happily take it. Also by changing any future Egi into technical glamours this means the SMN won't have to wait for a level cap increase every time it gets a new Egi, so that's yet another problem solved!
Come on guys when you think about it, this could be perfect for SMN!..
Well first i was disappointed, but i think the "trance system" is the best way to improve the job, if we can in the future get some special attack from summons, why not ^^.
Another thing about the egi glamour, is it an official thing ? Like, will we be able for example to swap garuda's skin by ramuh skin but keep the same abilities ? if so, that would be awesome, best compromise imo.
Anyway i look forward to smn 3.0, akh morn man, looks sick ^^
Also the tri-disaster change is great, now we can have some real burst abilities without needing the time to apply all 3 dots.
The new spells do seem to be aiding SMN as a viable caster, but also seem to be making its pet even less relevant. At least by premising our new-resource burst as 'invoking' Bahamut we are given some small element of SMN-ness, but I can't help but see it as something of a subtle dismissal to those who have been asking for pets to be made more relevant, impressive, effective, responsive, and/or generally interesting. It will cut its own path, no doubt, it just also seems to be answering only the barest, most practical complaints about the job.
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. I think what they've done is interesting, but at the same time it feels like a missed opportunity. For example, I know everyone is jumping for joy because we're invoking the power of Bahamut, but what if we were given something slightly more neutral, like a "Primal Trance" instead of "Dreadwyrm Trance," allowing us to tap into the power of Titan, Garuda, or Ifrit for a powerful Egi attack depending on which one we had active? It would accomplish the same thing that they've given us while also giving a nod to those who wanted to interact with their pets a little more.
I'm not sure where people are getting this from, but the Egi are not getting new abilities. Just the prospect of glamours in the future. This is what disappoints me most about the change. As Shurrikhan so eloquently put it, the Egi are becoming less significant in the wake of these new changes.
With everything coming out for Heavenward, nobody should have expected a massive overhaul of SMN... They said a big change, which is looks to be, and we still haven't seen everything... but for them to change how the pets work etc, that requires way too much development time for them to do together with all other new things.
Also, please stop complaining before we have even seen the Egi's new abilities... That goes for everyone, not just you.
I don't main SMN, because I find them boring... but while I'm still holding on to MNK main, I think SMN's new abilities looked very interesting, and will probably fix their lack of burst along with other things.
The Egi's new abilities might be vital for your group or yourself for all we know. If they made those more relevant, and fit them into a rotation, then wouldn't you get at least closer to what people wanted?
Either way, most people I know think SMN looks much more interesting, and they are actually thinking about trying one out again in the expansion. Just try to separate the FFXIV SMN job from other titles, because there are good things about this one too.
Disappointed about the lack of new summons, but we haven't seen everything yet in relation to new abilities and the possibility of customizing summons sounds good. It could allow us to get "new" egis as the Primal fights are released.
Melee Ravana
Tank Bismark
Caster Ramuh
I mean, my summoning in previous FF games was mostly based on which one had the coolest looking attacks :)
And people need to stop posting stop comparing to 11 as soon as it's mentioned in any context, fact is when you release something in the same series as something else and it's worse than its predecessor it's going to be compared. If a keyboard company released a keyboard 2 that didn't have an enter button or an escape button or any arrow keys, people would say "why the hell did you make this? What was wrong with the enter button and escape button and arrow keys on keyboard 1??".
FFXI's SMN had its flaws yes, but for every 1 thing they improved on SMN here compared to XI they made 2 things far worse.
FFXI SMN could not be cured or buffed. Fixed that, but also made the pets useless to the job so doesn't matter in the slightest what you do to them!
FFXI SMN was boring when you didn't have a pet out, fixed that, gave SMN a base class that wasn't to do with summoning. But also made the job nothing to do with summoning!
As for the look, no I don't think it would be confusing, if you confuse a small roegadyn sized Titan for the actual Titan then hungry hungry hippos may be more along the lines of your skill level than ffxiv.
"Worse?"
Everything i hear about summoners in FFXI is that they pushed one button then afk'd.
Also, I don't want bigger egis. I don't even notice my egi.
So there. I guess if we were to vote we would cancel out.
Okay, smart guy. I listened to the Live Letter, and I was paying attention to the Japanese because I'm fluent in it, and I don't trust the lady they had interpreting (no offense to her, as she's obviously not familiar with the game like the developers). Link the video with a time stamp where he said it. I'll transcribe for you what he said if you really want it. Granted, I was watching at nearly 3:30 in the morning (JST), but I did not hear anything about new Egi abilities come from his lips.
Does it matter if they left it out or not? No, why? Because only a small portion of the skills were shown for the summoner. More than likely, because of the level cap itself, we will see at least one pet skill regardless. Be it from a revamped system and the ability being lower, or something around the level 55ish range. Can we all just agree to disagree on this bit and just simply wait for the 3.0 notes to be read at e3, to see about what is going on with our pets?
How do you know this?
You can't expect anything for certain from SE anymore. First were getting new Egis, now we're not.
They mention pet Glamour's for a future date as a consolidation prize, but I'm not holding my breath. Once bitten, twice shy as the saying goes.
Prolly can just call it simply holding an old mindset from older mmo's on what expansions can bring. But regardless, people are looking to far into what is written as is so why not do the opposite of what the potatoes are doing? Or is there some silly little written rule that you have to bash anything and everything without thinking or being the least bit optimistic simple cause it's SE.
What's to guess about them outright lying? (I'll be optimistic and call it "not following through" or "going another direction")
If they've done it once, they'll do it again.
I know one thing for sure, they chose to reveal BLM over every other job. Why? IDK, for reasons :)
The message they've given us is clear: Here's the new SMN, like it or not, we don't care, Have a nice day! It cements the reality that at the end of the day only one two things will rule our tiny planet that is FFXIV: What is easy and safe.
If it meets those two criteria, then its optimal for the game. Despite what wars ensue on the forums.
SE didn't lie! If you actually read the original transcript where Yoshi-P talks about future Egi he also says that he would like to add new Egi via a glamour system:
This shows that even early on they were considering adding new Egi via a glamour.Quote:
Although actually I wish I could copy the Mammet with the Mirage Prism.
I'm sure if I look back through some old threads I've subscribed to I'd find at least a few suggestions very close to that, along the lines of giving the SMN the ability to transfer power between caster and pet while building up overall power each time until depleting it for some manner of burst effects. Siphoning from, absorbing, or reaching Trance via Garuda could then be different than via Titan, Ifrit, and perhaps eventually Shiva, Ramuh, and Leviathen. I was really looking forward to that. This isn't what I'd call a disappointment, sure, but as you said, it's definitely stepping away from some very obvious and lucrative opportunities.
I like the new change channeling the power of Bahamut and gaining a few of his abilities is nice. Now if Summoners can channel the power of the other 8 primals we will be golden.
Trances for all the other Primals are unlikely to happen. With no proper elemental wheel in play, the abilities the SMN would gain from each trance would pretty much be the same as each other, just with a different visual effect. SE may be able to squeeze one or two more Trances out for SMN but definitely not 8 or more!....think about it. It's the new Egi argument all over again, but it won't work for the exact same reasons.
Pfffft! We supreme BLUSMN trancers don't need 8 trances to dance! How preposterous! We're Elder Primal Mages! We don't need inferior primal powas!
In fact us BLUSMN are so awesome that we get our lackeys (ifrit, Garuda, and titan) to auto attack for us because we simply shouldn't be bothered with such mundane matters.
I'm not trolling, nor was that directed at you fellow Elder Primal Mage! Let us be united in our awesomeness and dance the dance of trance in a unity of peace!
I was merely informing all those non trancers out there to tremble in fear at the day of our true power coming to fruition!
They've revamped SMN to appeal to BLM players.. this emphasis on big bang boomness and the lack of new pets is making me want to drop SMN, It seems too different.
And no Ramuh or Shiva pets.. I'm honestly heartbroken. and no, skin glamours suck.
