Why are you people like this????

Think the GM's need to be educated on the difference between spamming chat logs and abilities. Though I agree spamming Holy the brightest and loudest spell IS annoying, it's not on the same page of the ToS of spamming. Probably would of given a warning instead of a account penalty.
From what I remember from that reddit thread, the guy who got banned for spamming Holy joined a bunch of people who were also doing it. Someone asked if they could stop spamming and pretty much everyone except the guy stopped. If I recall, he admitted to attempting to "trigger" said person despite people telling him to stop. It wasn't that the guy was banned for spamming Holy for fun; he was banned because he harassed the guy who asked him to stop by apparently following him around and spamming Holy next to him.
This is the reason the ToS are written so "wiggly": So that GMs can look at a situation and judge wether what happend here is something that under the given circumstances warrant an action or not.
If only things that are mentioned explicitly in the ToS would be something they could do something about, trolls would quickly find the thin line they could walk to not get banned but still on peoples nerves.
If the spamming of an ability is done with ill intentions or in a place where it doesnt belong (for example a city) why is it so different from chatlog spam? Its both annoying, it both follows the same principle, is often done for no other reason but to annoy people - and in theory you could turn both off, since this is being mentioned again and again in this thread (but you probably dont want to turn off your chatlog - just as much as people dont want to adjust their effects-setting just on the account of one person being annoying). Why should the spamming of an ability (for no other purpose than spamming that ability, aka: no mobs to kill with holy - crafting and melding always serve a purpose beyond spamming) be treated differently than chatlog-spam?
I would be interested in a source here if you can remember where it was, because this is actual context, the thing people are missing.
If, as, this suggests he was doing it to harass somebody, then it's not specifically for spamming and people's melodrama pushes the whole thing out of proportion, but rather spamming was the means, and harassment is something they are cracking down on. As a second offense, a 3 day suspension might be suitable because players shouldn't be going around harassing others and a second offense means the first warning (especially if for a similar issue) was not enough to get this guy to behave himself.
Told you guys, if this is true. SO INNOCENT! Didn't do anything wrong!

It also didn't help that people or sockpuppet accounts were spamming the issue in non related threads and making petitons. I guess people thought it was for 21 days?
The ban was TIL the 21st lol. The ban may have occurred on the 17th before the patch, but not 21 day ban.
First, there is no difference between spamming chat or abilities. Spamming is spamming. If I repeatedly used an audible emote but hid the chat log message, that’s still spam and the only feasible reason I would be standing in town doing that would be to annoy others.
Second, he got a suspension instead of a warning because his account must have a history of reprimands. SE has always used an escalation system for punishment. A minor offense my get you a warning. Repeated minor offenses might get you a permanent ban, because you clearly don’t know how to learn a lesson. If SE is giving him a three day vacation “just” for spamming, you can pretty much guarantee he’s done time or received warnings before this. He can play the victim all he wants but the evidence speaks for itself.
White Mages reaching a new level of forbidden magic with this development.
A. crafting is an actual productive thing, you're making something.
B. If you followed someone around just to spam random crafting sounds that might count anyway.
C. Holy, meanwhile, there's no reason to continually spam other than be annoying.
D. Turning off spell effects doesn't affect sounds. Also you can't remove the sounds and spell effects of the person spamming without affecting everyone. The choice shouldn't have to be 'deal with spammer or cut out EVERYONE'S things when everyone else areound ISN'T spamming.
You can put gil sellers on ignore does that mean they shouldn't be reported and banned either?
Please do report people for crafting in cities. LMAO I'm sure the GMs would be LTAO with us at you.
Yes, holy doesn't spam but people spam the hell out of holy for no reasons in cities then to annoy or troll people. How the hell you going to ask everyone around that person to go change their settings instead of that one person just stop doing it? What kind of logic is that.
If you are being harassed or abused by crafters, then by all means report them. If you are not being harassed crafters, then I don't recommend it but I can't stop you. It is your right to report crafters for crafting but you will have to take responsibility for your actions.
No I don't, you're comparing an action of ill intent to an action with no ill intent. It is silly to defend people maliciously spamming.
How many more times are people going to show up and make the wildly false equivalence of crafting vs spamming Holy in town? If any of you aren't just being contrarian and you truly believe those things to be anywhere near equal, there's no helping you.
Ya I don't think that's right, you can turn off the effect if you don't want to see it and blacklist the person.. a ban doesn't seem fair.
Also... Does this mean I can report people for spamming attacks in a dungeon?

There's 2 things that i wanna point out.
1, everyone can go into Character Customization on their settings menu and turn off all spell/skill effects from themselves, party members, and every other player character at will. I know several people do this to make it easier to load up the models for A and S rank hunts.
2, some Jobs, like MCH and AST, have quests that make them use some of their skills in towns and cities, so SE would have to move certain NPCs or targets to new areas, or just remake the quests entirely just because people are bothered with skill spam.
All in all, i believe this idea of skill spamming being a bannable abuse, just because someone is bothered over something so trivial and easily mitigated, is completely stupid.
1) No one should have to gut their system settings just to avoid being harassed by someone intentionally being annoying. How about people shouldn’t stand in town spamming abilities with the sole purpose of bothering others.
2) Not the same thing. People doing job quests have a reason to be there using their abilities and they’d only be doing so for all of a few seconds before moving on. I’m not aware of any quest that has you sitting there spamming any kind of spell for several minutes.
Bonus: Spamming probably isn’t really bannable on its own, but the person in question clearly has a history of getting in trouble. They were given a three day vacation because this isn’t their first offense.
Personally, I bet that more than one person reported those WHM's to get this type of reaction from the GM's.
Regarding number 2 - your false equivalency does not hold water for some very important reasons. The most important one is the simple fact that there is a difference between using Gauss round once to trigger a NPC flag and spamming a blinding ability in a crowd of people. The former actually serves an actual gameplay purpose and it's disruption effect is minimal as it only requires the ability to be used once. I doubt very much that people are going to notice a MCH hitting an NPC with Gauss round once in the back-ally's of Bruma versus somebody spamming a very high-visability ability over and over again in a main traffic area.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
There's a reason that I don't stand in the middle of the farmer's market trying to power up like some Dragon Ball Z character. Eventually the cops or an ambulance would show up and cart me off for being a crazy person.
Well idk where you live but if I just stood in a public area and continuously screamed at the top of my lungs, then I'm positive that someone would call the cops on me.
Yeah dawg. If they get you for DBZ then it's only an overnighter, but Cowboy Bebop? That shit is at least 5 years, smh.
This thread is still going?

All of you saying "its dumb" aren't using your brains. There is absolutely ZERO reason to use holy in a city. The person was clearly TRYING to annoy people, which is guess what? Harassment.....
Or how about you go take your character to your house and spam it there, away from the horde of people
Yes, it actually is! What are you trying to Stun and Damage in Limsa? ORIGHT, NOTING. So chain casting Holy in a city over and over again is indeed SPAMMING
Difference in what happened and what you are so ungodly exaggerating is one is a COMBAT ZONE one IS NOT. Stop reaching
or just report the people acting like kids?
Why cant the person spamming be considerate of others and NOT SPAM A BIG GIANT LOUD OBNOXIOUS SPELL OVER... and OVER.... and OVER.... and OVER.... and Over... and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....and over....
Annoying Holy spam? No sympathy.
i can get banned for spamming holy in a city but i can also get banned for telling the healer in my dungeon to stop spamming cure 1 and do something else :/
Not only this but according to people who seemed to watch this story on Reddit the guy was spamming to try and harass somebody even after they asked him to stop. Sure that person could have turned off the effects or gone somewhere else, but people shouldn't harass either, it's also against the TOS, if permitted always for a more toxic environment, it's also something SE is cracking down on and there honestly is no reason to harass except to be an a-hole.
Add that it's second offense. A 3 day suspension is not THAT harsh. It's not much of a punishment as is, but when people are repeat offenders then bigger deterrants are needed.
I still find it ridiculous people are still thinking that you can get banned for spamming holy. When actually it would need more than JUST a holy spam to do that.
If we are banning for spamming Holy I would also like to Ban all of those bards in Limsa spamming their songs.
Also the people spamming Emotes during their ERP sessions.
I mean I know I could turn all that off in chat but apparently thats not a valid excuse so ban them.
I'd like to point out so many white knights sit around saying people should be able to play thier own way when it comes to people doing ridiculous rotations in dungeons, but when its something that annoys them, BAN PLZ.
So if we are now banning people for things that annoy you but that you could actively and easily avoid then my list is as follows:
Bards playing Song macros for hours at a time.
Emote spam in Limsa.
Changing Glamours/classes the sound being spammed annoys me too.
Doing 20 DPS.
See, it all sounds stupid, just like banning someone for holy spamming is.
Also, calling this harassment is pathetic.
Why do people go to the most insane extreme in these kinds of debates? He clearly was spamming holy in the city, and was asked to stop by a few people. Why are we defending holy spam in a city? Would you go to your local mall and spam screaming? It's not hurting anyone right? so you can do it right? I mean you CAN, but you WILL be asked to stop and if you don't you WILL be going on a date with some form of a cop. It's the same with spamming. Most people don't report holy spam and thats fair, but also most people don't spam holy for that long either. If you're going around spamming it to someone who clearly doesn't want you to spam it in their face and you keep doing it? Guess what.. That is harassment.
None of those were extreme sure the emote and class change was exaggerating, the DPS and bard song spam wasn't though, they are things that annoy me, just like the holy spam annoyed people.
However the reason why i went that far was because its an utterly ridiculous reason to ban, was he annoying? Sure probably was, at the same time so are plenty of things in this game but we don't expect them to dish out bans for it.
Harassment
Aggresive pressure or intimidation.
No its not 'harassment' its annoying, lets not take things to the extreme as you so delicately put we aren't 3 years old and hopefully people have skin thicker than tissue paper. He isn't causing physical harm or is a threat or causing emotional distress, its literally just an annoyance and one that is easily fixed by in-game means. A fly buzzing around your head is an annoyance, it isn't harrassing you.
I am not denying that the guy probably is a pain, i am just saying that if we are banning for things that are annoying I have a whole list of things if we are going down that route.
