2nd night unable to play because of LONG queue times

Sitting here at 11+pm on a friday night looking at a 3000 person que. This should not still be happening and "gee we cant get servers is wearing thin". Yeah theres a chip shortage but its 2021, this game should be on the cloud and that shouldn't matter. I started in que at 9pm, got one 2002 error, and then sat in the que for another hour to get down to 1000, at which point i gave up and went to bed. this is ridiculous. SE needs to do better. I am a parent and i dont have 20 hours to deal with this stuff. you want me to pay you, fix it so i can use your product without a 2-3 hour que. This is totally unacceptable more than a week into launch.

The queues will increase in the next month, they wont be able to source much before Jan. Its a deal with it or take a break situation. Christmas people will have more time off and more people will get new hardware and accessability to the game or just gifted it. People will afk more to not get logged out. Jan will be the new savage tier which will drive up the afks. SE wont feel serious pressure to get the servers until mid Jan /early Feb when backlash from the community happens. People wont be able to log on after work and participate in their statics which will cause communities to crumble. There will be a lot of negativety at that point and they will start to scramble at all costs to fix it.

The main reason why there are people giving FFXIV the pass is because of the chip shortage and how it makes getting server hardware near impossible, despite OP's claims. If the chip shortage didn't exist, you would see more uniform criticism. However the chip shortage does exist, there are no practical solutions that they can do due to the chip shortage, and they warned people well ahead of time of the likely hood of the current situation.

Im sorry but i totally disagree with you. Wow has been able to solve this problem with sharding and virtual machines since like 2014. The fact that SE was too cheap to develop that capacity is on them. The chip shortage has been going on for over a year, and basically Yoshi put up a post (after i had already purchased endwalker) saying o "oh poopies server on fire". Now they are saying a fix is months out. This represents that SE decided to let their server infrastructure launch a new expansion with zero capacity for returning players. It doesn't get much more business stupid than that, and its a shame because they have a very high quality product here. SE deserves every bit of negative feedback they are getting and the community should NOT be understanding. Technology exists out there to solve this problem, they chose not to purchase it, and they expect us to pay for that decision with our time. A little boohoo from Yoshi doesn't change that, and he should be as mad about it as we are.

I'm sorry but saying that the community shouldn't be understanding is just entitlement. At the very least Yoshi P and the dev team deserve our understanding as I am pretty sure they are not happy with the situation either.

I participated in WoW Legion's launch and remember the usual early expansion issues so I wouldn't say they solved the problem since 2014. Also, the issue only became severe when the 5.5 wave of WoW refugees appeared, that was the main point when FFXIV's population growth exceeded their expectations by an unprecedented margin and it happened this year in the summer. If the numbers were around their projected numbers, we would probably see another Shadowbringers level of launch. Furthermore, the current setup for the servers allowed for an incredibly smooth experience once you are in game. The main reason why queues are long is due to the number of people wanting to play exceeding the limit of each world, which is set at a specific limit to ensure the game runs smooth. Regardless of tricks like sharding and virtual machines, there is still a hardware limit.

The main issue people are stating are 2002's during queue. However, based on the explanation for it, where it is caused by network instaibility/packet loss which is related to the amount of network traffic, how someone's connection is routed by their ISP, etc. It sounds like a fundamental networking issue rather than a FFXIV specific problem. The only real solution is either waiting for less players or more hardware.

Furthermore, you had a chance to refund the Endwalker expansion, even if you only listened into the last announcement they made before Endwalker, you had a month to let your sub lapse. The Yoshi P and the FFXIV devs have gone well out of their way when you consider how most other games handle these type of situations.

Fact is, there are no practical solutions. I suspect this so called "fix" is just a bandage fix or is sacrificing some sort of server stability to try to accommodate additional people. Unless they were able to acquire the server hardware they needed somehow, I don't think much will change. We can look at the result of the last fix, where they just increased the capacity for the login queues. It honestly didn't really do much as the fundamental problems still existed with there being just too many people trying to login and not enough space in the game servers to accommodate everyone, thus people are stuck in the queue longer and there is such a large amount that it increases the chances of things like collisions.

Well game crashed, and now I won't be playing today. Not frustrating at all.

The cloud is not this magical cure. It has it own issues like being less reliable. The one credit you can give SE is that well the servers are very congested, once you are in game the experience has been overall very smooth for the majority.

You all sound like children. It's a popular game at a difficult time in the world. Get over it. You have no legal recourse.

Your comment sure doesn't help the problem. Just makes others more angry. It was popular before 6.0 and queues sure wasn't 1000+ like they are now.

I was queued as over 7300, 6 hours later and I have only just scratched the 2000 player mark. It's my first month playing the game but 7 days of my game time has just been in a queue. I'm an old wow player, so I am use to queues but this takes the cake. I would like to support the game , it just makes enjoying the game making the switch that much more frustrating when you can't log in. I had a small power dip this morning and that cost me an entire day's worth of play time. (Been trying to get in since Wed night.)

I fully expect this to carry on for 2-3 months and with the amount I've been able to get on in the last week - I seriously would put my account on hold and stop paying for a few months..... only..... I can't! If I do I will lose my house! At the very least they should again suspend auto-bulldoze of housing while people can't login.

I've been sitting in a queue - and just playing wow instead. Imagine that.... the new launch of a new expansion of FFXIV has got me to play other games more......

WoW is a slightly bad example to use here. Sharding came to pass because of the exact reasons that FFXIV is having now, back in Warlords. Blizzard also had far more servers, and all of them were suffering. Sharding is great and worked for them - a process that FFXIV already uses, as multiple instances have always appeared on launches and tend to vanish when no longer needed. I believe they may have even upgraded that sharding technique for this expansion. WoW also serves as an excellent example of why too much expansion is a bad thing when it comes to servers - the literal undercapacity of many servers now so severe that they've combined them so populations feel alive instead of lonely.

They upgraded their servers back in July. They accelerated their plans for servers that were slated to go into play in 7.0 and started pushing them for 6.0 instead - we're getting a whole new Datacenter for Oceania, hopefully in February. They stated, also back in July, that they were waiting on the delivery of servers that they had bought and were in talks for other vendors for more, because - unsurprisingly - offering more money doesn't solve the issue that something doesn't exist. They raised the server caps as much as their new servers could allow for without frying them. They even brought in their dev servers to try and add more.

The FFXIV team has done literally everything possible, even choosing to try out cloud servers and finding them unsatisfactory for the needs of the game. Like Yahallo said - there's a lot of entitlement bleeding from the people who are upset about a minor inconvenience to their day when all efforts have been made to alleviate that as much as they can. They have gone to great lengths, and for that I am completely understanding and yes, I would expect any reasonable person to be understanding as well. That they aren't is simply entitlement on their end.

If they did I missed it - would love to see they have! I know they did during the initial lockdowns for COVID19 but they started them back up again I thought. I don't (at least totally) blame SE for this current issue, I work in IT in a large college and we've just put in around £1.5M virtual infrastructure and have had significant problems with lead-times on servers ourselves (like 3-6 months), but it does still "irk" me to be paying for the game I cant use just to avoid having my house demolished.

While I don't want to stop my sub, I would definitely consider that as an option for a couple months while this problem still exists if I didn't risk losing my house. If anyone can point me to any current announcement that they HAVE again suspended demolishing houses that would be very welcome.

Hahaha, calling me entitled w/e. There is nothing entitled about expecting a software as a service provider to provide the service they are selling. a 30 minute que is manageable. A 3 hour que is a complete failure and is essentially a non functional service. Legion launched in 2016. Shadowlands also launched during the pandemic, and despite having more people, did not have this issue. There is clearly a technical solution. Tech team knows they messed up, thats why our lodestone posts are 4 pages of random server error tweaks. No one cares about them fixing the 90000 error really, what they care about is adding server capacity so that we dont have to sit in que when something happens. There are a lot of hops between my computer and their servers, they cant stop interruptions from happening and the information they are posting is complete garbage/ window dressing. They know they messed up and thats why they posted before the wall even hit. I actually want to play this game, i dont mind personally paying the sub and waiting a few months but a lot of people are not in that position financially. Failing to this level at server provision, however, and then getting your customers to come apologize for you is a real feat. I dont have to persuade you, the reviews after a month or two of these ques will be merciless and they know it. They better figure something out soon. The current situation is untenable, and i dont think its going to start to bleed off until after christmas given the emergence of Omicron.

The main influx of players that really pushed things past the limit was during the summer. They had already been working on the Oceanic Datacenter which was delayed to February 2022; so it sounds like some of their orders were delayed. Yoshi P stated that despite being willing to pay marked up prices, they were not able to secure additional servers. So this shortage is closer to a depletion of supply. Maybe this so called stock you speak of isn't compatible for one reason or another? Or maybe it isn't as plentiful as you think it is, perhaps it isn't anywhere near enough for the scale the game needs it to be.

Just comparing the number of players isn't the correct manner; rather you have to compare the growth rates. FFXIV had an explosive growth rate in the past year, surpassing all of their projections. They were not expecting so many people to move from WoW to FFXIV. FFXIV growth rate was unprecedented. WoW has lost players over years. Also, if you look at the server error tweaks, they are just bandaid solutions; they are simply trying to mitigate the issues as much as they can, but none of them actually solves the root cause because the solution to that is not a technical solution. All of these errors existed before Endwalker came out. What is the main difference between now and then? The number of people trying to log in and play.

Just because they can make some minor tweaks as a stopgap doesn't mean a technical solution exists. The root cause is a lack of servers and they do not have the means to get more servers due to the chip shortage. The entitled part comes from not taking into account factors like the chip shortage and essentially expecting people to somehow do the impossible.

There is nothing to figure out because there are no practical solutions that will resolve this.

Expecting companies to provide the servcies they sell you isnt too much to ask and a customer should only be understanding for a short time. What if your electric company provided this level of service to you? or your internet provider? would you just be "understanding" if your internet was out 6+ hours a day, during the time you primarily use it, and they tell you they cant fix the issue due to a chip shortage and then just offer you 7 days of free service.. since wow, that makes up for the product you paid for not working, right?

Change your sleep schedule so you are awake to play the game when the queues are gone. If you are running into the queue on weekdays it means you play in the afternoon-evnings, so just got to be when off work and play after you wake back up as the queues are basically gone then

My internet goes out all the time WITHOUT warning and for hours.
And even if I'm understanding to it when it happens, they don't call, email, or anything to tell why its happened, how long it'll be out, or anything.
If they would offer 7 days free (or ANYTHING really), I'd be very happy. However, they DON'T. I can go days without internet monthly, and never get a single penny back.
And they're the only company in our area. So nope to being able to change to someone else.
Being compensated can go a long freaking way.
Specially when you know what its like to NOT EVER be compensated.

FFXIV on the other hand. Provided a service (Endwalker + sub)
You got the codes and I'm assuming put them on your account, meaning. You got the service.

You were warn many, many, MANY times that this service was going to be interrupted once expansion drops.
You stay subbed, knowing the risk.
And as stated already by another, interruption of service is already covered in the ToS. The ToS YOU agree too when you pay for your sub.

I completely disagree with this assessment. You cannot compare your internet issues to this.

Yes, actually, it does, since the 'product' you're paying for is the subscription service that gives you access to the game itself. Can't access the game? Free days of access are given, with more likely to come. What isn't working is the access to Endwalker. Endwalker itself is fine. You're not getting a refund on Endwalker, you're getting a refund on your subscription to access it.

Yes we knew it would be a rough start. But the incredibly broad statement they used is easily misinterpreted. This is like telling me the car I'm about to buy has some "overheating issues" and then having it burst into fire as I drive it off the lot.

Also back when I had charter they always prorated everyone bill if they had service outages. Sounds like your ISP are jerks <_<

Well I have one thing, WHY is this discussion even on the Technical Support forum without any real issue that has not been worked on and addressed? I'll tell you why, because people here feel that the general forum is not read by any devs... but here I also haven't seen any devs. people calling others apologists here is not warranted, people calling others "entitled" is not warranted. Either case is wrong. We ALL have to deal with the long queues, last night before I went to stream I was in a 3600K+ queue, and I had set myself a good hour ahead of time hoping to get in on time for my stream. I didn't make it, after 2.5-3 hours waiting in queue I started streaming 1.25 hours late. don't tell me because i got in i don't know what it is like to wait what so ever which I have been told. Honestly most people here in these threads that are blaming SE are looking in the short term past, not the long term past. also many have called the issue of the shortage of semi-conductor materials/chips an excuse, as if it doesn't matter but that is a very, very incorrect way of seeing it.

1) the influx of wow players (and other mmo's) started in july/august. The texas semiconductor plants (3 of them) shut down in FEB (BEFORE the influx) due to a huge cold snap that was not expected and the power grid was being destabilized by everyone at home keeping warm and the plants working. The plants shut down to help EVERYONE by helping the power grid to stabalize. then there was a fire in a japanese chip plant that all told hit about 28-30% of the semiconductor/chip manufacturing globally.

2) in 2020 there was a huge rush to get computers to work from home to help contain and control the spread of COVID-19 had left computer manufacturers struggling to keep up with the demand which would still be high even in early 2021. Computers, GPU's were scarce and people were scalping the gpus because they figured well i buy at 300 bucks per item, I got only 3, i'll charge 1,000 bucks or more for something retailing around 450-500 MSRP.... why? GREED. why bring this up here? it is an example of what is going on else where, you know supply vs demand and all that.

3) on the business side, the servers and other equipment besides cables and monitors were in high demand to upgrade networks in 2020 because of the more people that were working from home, and that need never let up and is still in high demand, and just as i mentioned in #2 some suppliers are telling companies outrageous prices for gear. Companies had to make choices across the world on what to do.

4) people have said that SE should have known in advance that the popularity of their game would reach company/title breaking records but there was no indication of that before the shortage. once the shortage happened there was very little ANY company could do to adjust for this.

5) people are saying "Why don't they rent servers from amazon or microsoft, ect.?" well here is a thing, not EVERYTHING works with those virtual servers that microsoft and amazon have available so you can't just incorporate them by a simple copy of the files to them, plus how will you put it into what ever data center that is needed? those are physically linked together, they'd have to engineer software to do this if they even could and that takes 6 months to a year easily and even then the connections would be fragile and could make things worse causing people to complain there.

6) YES I have been impacted, i've fortunately only lost 2 streaming days on this but the EULA does specify you are not guaranteed access to the servers 100% of the time, you may say you pay for a service but if you look at what you agreed to it does say that SE is not responsible for issues that stop you from playing. HOWEVER they do appreciate you and will diligently work to solve any error you get if they can. but just because you work 9-5 and then drive an hour to get home leaving you with less than 5 hours with family and relaxation. Your schedule is not their concern but still because you are having problems and others are as well they are trying to give you back your time.

7th and final point: This is a forum for people who have technical issues, and since the connectivity issue has been identified and addressed the best of their abilities at the current time, you should make a decision of what you intend to do but they have given 7 days to all active payed accounts (not the free trial, but the 30 day free with the base game gets it) and do it. if you really need to address this since the technical side has been addressed I'd recommend you contact SE customer service directly.

You might have noticed I never said anyone was wrong except for calling people names just because you don't like what they say. I did not say that anyone's time is not as important as anyone else's, I only once made comments in a general nature. Come on lets move on and acutally use this forum for what it is intended to be used for instead of a soap box.

I have read all the discussions, and I see many people feeling hurt or their opinions invalidated. I wish there were "real" dev responses on this thread. It would make things better for everyone. But they didn't; they got a copy/paste response from one of them, maybe because people were reporting each other in this thread for harassment.

We are all in this together; the best thing we can do is support one another and develop a viable solution. I worry about the future of this game due to its massive popularity.
I work as a designer in an enterprise providing digital solutions to ten million customers via monthly subscriptions. I asked one of my colleagues: "How do we manage such a massive amount of datasets and not crash when everyone tries to log in?" They answered: "by using a combination of physical data centres and cloud ones."

Is it possible to elevate some of these issues using a hybrid model like the one my colleague mentioned?

Again tonight I get home from work 1750 person Q. Not Bad Not bad at all. I wait 4 hours babysitting my computer on ly to get error 2002 with less then 400 left to go. I cant log back in immediately because it wont let me. Then finally I get back in and Im at 3500. My blood pressure is through the roof . I waisted 4 hours of my time for this crap. It happens every friggin nite. So I have definitely unsubbed. So the stupid 2002 error is still definitely a problem as I get it every night.. Every night and always after waiting for hours in line.

I do not know how the infrastructure is, but from their descriptions of "Logical Servers" that is a non-physical server used to help prevent the things you are talking about. MMO's are not easily converted to internet cloud servers, also what type of cloud servers your company uses may be completely different. To include cloud servers if they are not used the features being put to those cloud servers might actually be a very big endeavor, massive rerouting of functions etc. I can't say for sure what cloud servers your colleague was talking about for your set up but though it is a good idea, it is possible they can't do that. For instance when we got 6.0 dropped, it wiped any partial level because of their number crunch. There was a question asked could they save the progress, the answer was they could with a 3 week server down time for that to be done, so some things are very hard to implement when there is a product running live.

Now real quick adding a world server is not a hard thing to do because they just have to get the servers for the worlds connected properly the software installed properly and named so that the relevant entries can be placed into the Data Center's information blocks and the UI's can show what is necessary, this can be done with backend patches and a small content patch thus there would be a little bit of a down time, perhaps added in during normal maintenance.

Good ideas though I hope some day there would not be an issue of massive player loads and no server caps. :) I will also say that is a very, very astute question but with an answer like that given and the unknown setup SE has (to you) doesn't fully answer the question.

They knew how full the servers already are, they know how there is no way to get more servers, and they still pushed Endwalker out... this game needed a delay, even 2-3-4months until they can short out the server issues, but greed is a big thing and they just pushed the game out, because they had the biggest Excuse in the world COVID and Chip Shortage. And people still defend them... I can't defend them at all at this point, what and how they did things shows what this was all about, and all of it comes down to money. I don't think many people would care if they push the game for next year because of these issues, now the only thing they created is a lot of frustrated people who can't play the game they pay for every month, it's like paying for you internet, and can't use it.
