Harassment to Asmongold on his 1st day stream is an Embarassment to FF Community

It's kind of inevitable that it'll happen, idk why it's surprising considering it happens in any game he plays. 200k people, 150k people, watching. Who woulda thunk a handful of them would want attention and be weird. Anyone who can like... probably just think, a little, could've come to that conclusion after a good ten seconds. There's even precedent, so... like... idk how it's anymore surprising than the sun rising in the morning.

XIV's community ain't perfect, and is basically the same as any other online game community (maybe it's cleaner most of the time in chat, but there was Some Stuff going down in the chat during the whole Memorial event that wasn't all too far removed from what you'd read in WoW's LFG). On top of the standard Gamer Stuff that flies around (in game, in community discords etc... ), it has just the same amount of tribalism League/DOTA 2 have, has the same weirdos who'll go on a crusade against a guy because "Plays Different Game" intermixed with people who want to be seen as Bastions of Morality who'll grab a genuine, real, critique someone may have and run with it and take it too far or don't understand the message and try to use it as a bludgeon instead of an informative tool. It also has the same centrist-y types who think they're smarter than everyone else because they generally only hold the most popular opinion around and do the same thing as the "Woke Twitter Crowd" that they say they hate so much. It's the same kind of echo chamber of 2 different types of people who are gonna be trapped in a forever fight as long as their bubbles of the XIV community are the only places they interact within. Same shit can be found in any game.

And all the worse stuff isn't a stranger to the community, either. Gonna hound x community for having predators in it, then you gotta admit XIV has that problem, too.

If people actually care about having a good community, then those people should actually look at it and think about it a little more and maybe try to put forth the action to make it a better community. But it'll mostly be written off, ignored, until some Big Outside Thing happens all energy gets focused into for a bit until someone either takes it too far, or it fizzles out in like, a week or a month after the main event.

tl;dr: XIV's community is your stock standard online community. There's reasons people might not like Bald Man and that's fine, harassing the guy is still a dick move and it's flawed to think that the XIV community/his community would act any different because it's XIV.

I don't really care if he gets chased by a billion people or not, it's not my problem to put up with. But if someone really doesn't like the guy, or something, just don't support him and support one of the smaller streamers in the community instead in some way. It makes a bigger difference than being a stream room jester for a minute.

I really hope Square conducts a full investigation on this and sends a couple of people to the gaol or straight up ban.

Specially cause a lot of the people harrasing Asmon had Extreme and Savage mounts, so they were probably RMT purchased since endgame raiders would not risk their accounts and all the work they put into them for this petty tantrum of not liking someone because they play a different game.

In fact, a lot of endgame raiders I've spoken to were thrilled that Asmon was joining since that would also bring Mythic difficulty raiders over from WoW and god knows we need more people capable of running Savage and Ultimate content.

And quite a few people are constantly finding excuses to say it's the entire FF14 community instead of sections, and those people need to grow up as well. The entire community cannot get onto Cactuar, only those in Aether. Primal, Crystal, Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Chaos, and Light players cannot enter that DC, cannot get onto that server. That's players from 1 out of the 8 data centers doing the harassment, and still a fraction of those players.

I'm sorry if you're feeling unwelcome but the majority of the FFXIV community is no different from the majority of the WoW community - quiet, polite if they're interacting with you, mostly just wanting to relax and have fun playing a game. They're worth getting to know.

It doesn't mean we don't have that tiny percentage that is toxic just like WoW has. Sounds like you were unfortunate enough to run into a few of that tiny percentage.

What you list as your experience in 2 of the FCs you tried is no different from hundreds of stories that Preach has read on his Drama Time videos about the backstabbing and bickering that goes on in WoW guilds.

Then there are FCs like mine where about a third of the members are WoW veterans that lost interest in that game but found they enjoy FFXIV and have made friends with others who have never played WOW at all and don't care to.

It's got nothing to do with the game or the game's community. It has to do with the person. It is unfair to judge an entire community based on the actions of a few individuals.

You throw out 5% of being the number of jerks in Asmongold's community. Well he's got almost 400k subscribers of one of his multiple YouTube channels alone. That would mean there are 20,000 jerks in his community.

Do you genuinely think there aren't at least 500 of those jerks who don't also happen to play FFXIV and jumped on the chance to show up for his stream yesterday?

Again, sorry you've had bad experience with a few isolated individuals who play FFXIV but they aren't reflective of the community nor is the community responsible for them.

Asmongold, on the other hand, does share some responsibility for the actions of those in his community because he puts them up to a lot of the crap they do. In one of his highlight videos he posted last week, he encouraged his viewers to report a specific player in his party for name violation and you could see that player going offline almost immediately as the game kicked him from the server because of those reports.

That's supposed to be a reasonable and nice guy? Do you think those viewers just randomly and independently reported that player and not because he told him to do it?

The last thing anyone wants is for him to start up that sort of crap here. At least here he'll end up getting banned for doing it even if Blizzard turns a blind eye.

He's never not on an alt.

I'm not saying that none of this was particularly targetted at Asmongold, or that none if it was intended to legitimately harass him, but I think it's worth keeping in mind that this is the same sort of thing that happens with a lot of famous (or at least known) content creators when they stream their gameplay. There's always an embarrassing crowd of hangers on and gawkers who insist on following them around to every quest objective, using emotes "in camera," dancing around, sitting around on their mounts, etc. I'm guessing they somehow feel it will make them look or feel special by association. I'd imagine in Asmongold's case it was part harassment, yes, but also partly just this usual behaviour multiplied many times over.

It's also calmed down a lot since yesterday which is nice. Yesterday wasn't really a good showcasing of the community imo, to the point where game publications were picking up on it. But today is quite pleasant, and Asmon is really positive about the game which is a nice advertisement.

There's still people running around but they're being not as obstructive. Hopefully it dies out because Asmon wants to complete the entire game and do the hardest raids and if he can bring close to 100k viewers on Twitch all the time for his entire run that's so much good publicity for FFXIV :)

To be fair to the England fans, and as an Englishman that's not something I say often, the fans laughing at the girl were watching in a pub, not the stadium, they didn't do it in her face or anything even though it is pathetic to have that reaction to a distraught child. As for giving the germans stick about WW2 that is pretty standard football crowd stuff. I wouldn't take kids to a football match personally, it gets much worse than that.

Did you see what the guy's name was? He was censor bypassing to use a racial slur for a name. Good on him for reporting. Good on him for using the resources available to him to get it taken care of quicker. If I hae to side between the streamer who used his audience to delete a racist or the guy with the racist name, it'll be the streamer every time.

By contrast, Asmon is getting swarmed in XIV (as he knew was going to happen) and all this game's GMs could do is ask him to literally reply back with every name of the people harassing him. And we'll never know how much overlap there is between people who only play one game or the other or both, if they're Asmon viewers or if they're Asmon haters (which we've seen a ridiculous amount of gatekeeping from our community even before he touched the game yesterday), or if they're just dummies wanting their 5 minutes of fame and not thinking about how they're ruining his enjoyment. We do know there were a ton of not-sprouts there with max levels, so unfortunately part of that is our community doing it. If he wasn't as chill as he was over the weekend, what would his takeaway have been? It wouldn't have been positive at all if he couldn't put up with it, especially so after the GMs didn't do a thing, and he has enough of a platform that his opinion would have merit and spread far and wide. So that's not a good look.

The FF community have for a long time seen themselves as better than the WoW community and don't want them to come here and "corrupt" the FF community.

He is an important person and when you are important people talk about you.

As a WoW Refugee (2004-2021) having started playing a few weeks back I have to say I'm really enjoying the change of pace. I was excited when Asmongold announced he was going to stream because I think for a lot of WoW Players who are getting tired of the relentless grind and min-maxing culture could really enjoy the switch.

The WoW community is hands down far more "in your face toxic", No question. I have had very positive interactions in FFXIV thus far, I'm enjoying running duties as a tank and everyone I've encountered for the most part has been incredibly friendly. That being said I've been reading the forums for the last day or so after some experiences in-game and I felt compelled to express what I have encountered and a very different kind of toxicity in the FFXIV community. Obviously this is only my personal experience and it is not representative of the entire community, However I am seeing a worrying trend in public or private community interactions which strongly urge a player to "conform" or end up a social outcast on their particular shard.

When I say conform, I feel I should clarify that I'm not talking about anything to do with gameplay. I'm referring specifically to ways of thinking or "standards" which in my view are very extreme and are in some cases I've witnessed being very forcefully thrown at people who are told if they don't get on board they should leave. If what was being expressed was just things like basic human decency and pleasantness I wouldn't really be concerned but it's not, It's very specific world views or beliefs that give me a very nervous feeling going forward.

I hope my impression thus far has just been the exception to the rule because outside of these occurrences I am really enjoying the game and I can't wait to get into the expansion content (I've only just completed the AAR Questline).

My two cents: Don't care what his reputation or fanbase is: he has the same rights as the rest of us here and if someone harasses him they should get a warning at the least. It stinks that because of his fame that there's no way to stop it from happening on the get go, but it's still possible to deal with it in retrospect.

Existing community, please do not harass Asmon. He has enough to deal with from trolls.

Asmon has pretty low expectations of customer support and put in a report that was really lacklustre. He also probably missed the message a GM sent him because he's new and he was overwhelmed and his chat box would fill up pretty quickly. But there are a bunch of people reporting people who are griefing him. That naked ninja guy was also apparently banned.

I encourage everyone who sees someone griefing Asmon or any people coming over from WoW to report them. This has been a bad look for the FFXIV community in front of 100k people watching on Twitch.

This is the biggest problem and disservice that this whole situation brings. Being front page on Twitch this might be the first and only time someone sees 14 at all and its gonna to be negative. I wasn't expecting the red carpet to be rolled out for him but it was a lot worse than I imagined it would be.

Honestly, I don’t see what the fuss is about this guy or why anyone defends him. He’s demeaning (especially to women) homophobic and cruel. I've watched him stream for years and haven't seen any of this demeaning of women you speak of, i think a lot of people especially from this community tend to hate on him because its the "cool" thing to do, and cruel? what did he punch a kitten? i think also this just stems from people being snowflakes. This guy has done quite a lot of good for charity's and a lot of what he earns goes into looking after his mum. I dont think its great but he tends to cop a lot of fake news within this community. There was a lot of proudboy idiots saying they griefed him in the novice chat a real "wd" moment. In all this was the worst toxicity ive seen in a mmo in all my time playing them.

The reason the dev called him that has everything to do with how vocal he is about how badly his favourite game is being trashed by people who arent interested in the game rather the money they can milk from its fan base. And i'm fairly certain a lot of people who are passionate about this game would also take the same stance if it happened to this game. This isn't even remotely the worst that I've seen be targeted against Asmon alone, but just devs in the US in general I dunno why so many of them are so damn toxic online.
And then when they do get fired everyone acts like a complete moron about it like with that writer from GW2 when she was fired.
And it clearly wasn't just the one case when you went back and looked at her history, she even said she was happy that Totalbiscuit died from cancer like these are the people we're talking about...

It's especially bizarre because they then act like these great progressive people, just because you jump on every bandwagon that is trendy currently doesn't make you a good person.

Quite the opposite he always tells people to knock it off when they attack women in chat for their appearance or are being creepy.
He does talk about boob sliders and all that but it comes across as more ironic to me, his actual behaviour and attitude towards women irl is very respectful.
I mean Zepla did the same thing on Allcraft and she has videos about sexy mogs etc, and I don't see people attacking her for it and they shouldn't.

Even when it comes to the streamers in hot tubs and all that it's more about breaking the rules and not about moralizing about what they're doing.

Sorry on this I agreed with his actions. I wont show the name here, Ill just say that Id have reported it myself had I seen it. His response was, IMO correct and justified.

The name was both offensive..and racist.

He was pretty chill during his streams and enjoys the game.

I don't get why players are acting like kids to get on the screen or straight-up use a big mount on top of the NPC? That's being lower than a kid or a monkey.

This behavior is not only a shame to the community but the GMs as well. It's been years since we've been complaining about the permanent marks on accounts, about the ridiculous bans, about how harsh the slips when chatting are judged... And they won't do anything when there is a visual proof of griefing?
There's less people on his screen, some may have been indeed banned for a duration.

God forbid if Yoshi P logged onto Cactuar for a visit and news got around. Is he sure he wants to implement the cross world visits?

This, 100%. To be fair to GM's it's a lot of people to try and deal with, and Asmon can't report everyone himself or he would be at it all day. For all those who think, who know our community is better than this we can do our part. And yeah, that goes for all griefing, not just Asmon.

I didnt know Asmon before all this drama and all I heard is that he did shit on FFXIV before and now tries the game. While I understand that people have mixed feelings about it you also have to understand that nobody here owns FFXIV. Everyone can play, even people you dont like.
If you try to ruin his experience while hes playing because you dont like him or of what he said about the game before, well you are no better then him. Its just pathetic that some people are like "hes not welcome here".
Leave him alone. You are not the guarding of FFXIV. We dont need anyone to gatekeep the game. Its not yours to control whos plays and who doesnt. As a matter of fact if we do not need that toxicity you bring now because he plays the game.
They cry about "toxic wow players" while being the worst of the worst. Ironic.

I never saw the name. If it was offensive, then Asmongold should have just reported it and left it at that.

It is not fine for him to be drawing attention to it and telling his viewers to report it like he did. If his viewers had found the name offensive, they would have already reported it on their own. When they're only reporting it because Asmongold has told them to do it, it's an abuse of the system. It's something Asmongold got suspended for doing in the past including one instance where he had his followers report him. When he tried to use the "I did nothing wrong to deserve a suspension" defense, Blizzard pointed out that he encouraged his viewer to abuse the system.

He already did visits to a couple of the NA data center worlds after the reorganization in 2019. As expected, the areas were packed with players who wanted to say they were there just as players were doing that with Asmongold this weekend.

Being present isn't necessary harassment. Some of those present were harassing Asmongold. Most were not and were probably just trying to be seen in the stream or watch what was going on "in person".

But short of those who were evidently saying things in shout chat trying to get others to prevent him from playing (hopefully those players end up in the gaol this week), there's probably no not enough evidence of a specific intent to harass for SE to take action.

I don't really agree with this at all, if someone is breaking the rules and you tell your viewers to report I think it's just common sense at least when it's genuinely offensive.
If it was just some dude who was rude one time then I wouldn't rly agree with it.
But when it's someone with a racist name I think it's perfectly fine to tell them to report.

Think about the kind of person that even names their character a racist way too, it's pretty fair to assume that people like that are also up to other things that deserves a ban.
I do report people for it too and I did it in WoW as well, I think running around with a name that is clearly deliberately meant to be racist is pretty different than someone having a bad day or just a bad moment and being rude one time.

I don't think that Asmongold have ever had a racist name either, when I think of an offensive name I don't think of someone just naming their character like '' dickface '' or something.
I think of people with blatantly racist or sexist names, for example in WoW Classic I remember someone who had named their character lets just say '' do something very bad to women who are dogs and your body fluids '' in Danish.
Yeah I'll report that.
And if I was a streamer I'd tell my viewers to do it too.

Abusing the system would be telling people to report someone because they're named '' dickface '' and it upsets you.

Abusing the system would be 'report this guy for winning the loot I wanted lol', not 'report this guy for having the N word on their name' - they would've been reported anyways, but the fact Asmon saw it and called it out live simply made the process much faster

The person in question had the N gamer word in their name. It's an insta ban.

Asmon also gets his viewers to mass report bots. I also don't have a problem with this.

Lol I remember on one stream he sat around watching A LOT of bots in an area and was reporting them with viewers, Blizzard actually ported them to another layer instead of dealing with the bots.
At first he thought they had banned the bots then they managed to swap back to the layer and they were all still there.
The bot situation is just hopeless.

I remember seeing a lot of bots in Limsa in past expansion especially ARR and Heavensward, nowadays I rly don't see them at all.

An unintended perk of FFXIV for content creators is the cutscenes. Asmon actually gets a break from the crowds and doesn't have them spoil important scenes. It's nice to see that the swarm of players who follow him can't entirely ruin his experience.

I have watched both his FFXIV streams and the crowds did die down. Clearly many just wanted to be there the first time he logged in and given that can only happen once, some stopped crowding around him. In the first stream as the night went on the crowd got smaller. In the second stream the crowd was still big but still not as enormous as his first log in. I think that as time passes the crowds will get smaller and smaller. It won't completely disappear, but many will eventually get bored of stalking him given he rarely acknowledges them.

As for who is at fault here, it isn't a single group. Yes some are awful people who intend to disrupt his experience in the game, but some are his fans. I have been watching Asmon for quite a long time and you can see from his chat many of his followers do play FFXIV. Not all the max lvl players following him are anti-fans trying to ruin his day. Some are just obsessed fans who happen to play FFXIV. Furthermore he gets crowded in the same way in every game he plays. What he is experiencing in FFXIV right now isn't new to him at all. That doesn't make it okay, but it does mean it's not just salty or obsessive FFXIV players who do this sort of thing.
