Well, to be fair, that game is over 12 years old and the console itself is 15, so...

This game is old 2 years and PS3 almost 9 (or 8? IDK) so...
Making new models, locations, content for this game in way that even PS3 can handle it will always hold us back. I won't go into technical details as other people who are more experienced in this area explained it 100 times already.
PS3 support should be canceled by 4.0, not earlier though. :)
I cannot really see this game going for 5+ years if it keeps support for obsolete hardware, atleast graphically it would stay the same, dx11 was just a small fix, we need more work on textures.
That's what I have been saying. I see no problem in discontinuing future support for PS3 as of FFXIV 4.0. Although I do think that unless the number of PS3 players has dropped to a very small number by then, they are likely to keep the FFXIV 2.X and 3.X content available for PS3 until the 5.0 Expansion (assuming and hoping we get that far). Of course by then we should be looking PS5 square in the eye, so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
Yeah I am sorry, I thought that the quote of your post on the top of this page was whole. So I was actually replying to something that was out of context. After looking back, I completely agree with your opinion. And yeah, I also think that even after dropping support, old content should be still avaible to PS3 players. They bought the game, they should be able to play it.
Uh... it's been years so I'm not sure. I do know that it's still an original 60g and that's what counts for me. Mind, it's always a good idea to back-up your data to an external before doing any kind of send-in. Just in case.
You never upgraded your hard drive? I've done SSD and hybrid (the SSD crapped out on me) in my PS3 and the difference in load times for installed games is like night and day. So yes, a better hard drive is magic. Hell, I was so impressed with the performance that I put a hybrid drive in my PS4!
Nah there has been plenty of things which developers have said no to because of console limitations. Mostly having to do with UI and overall fairness with console players. TP bar, character creation options, meters are just a few of them. Until they drop support for PS3 it will definitely be holding back the game. Even PS4 might have some unforeseen limitations in the future as PC's improve. Its true that the bigger issues have to do with their incompetence at server management (housing, inventory, login errors) but quite a few things have already been held back because they cant be done on consoles.
Still at the end of the day the fact its on consoles probably helps more than it doesnt. The game would be missing a big chuck of "registered accounts" if it wasnt for consoles IMO.
See, the argument (of many) is that the game has overlong load times on the PS3. If you're still using the stock hard drive then yes, it does. But pop in a better hard drive, doesn't have to be hybrid or an SSD, 7200 rpm can suffice, then you will see a marked improvement in load times. This is most obvious in high action games like Dust 514 or Ace Combat Infinity. PCs it's not as obvious because you have RAM providing a loading buffer.
I think if dropping the PS3 will allow them to move forward and do the things that they want with the game, they should do it. If they haven't already (I think they have), allow those who bought the game for the PS3 to transfer their clients for free to the PS4 if they own one.
Preferably this should be done in the months following the next PS4 price drop.
It was free for like a full year
Okay I'm exaggerating, not a year but at least half a year if not more
PS3 to PS4 transfer should be free permanently,
my gf is holding off on buying a PS4 because she doesn't want to pay for ARR and Heavensward again on top of the cost of a PS4
I'd like to see PS3 dropped. Can't see PS4 holding back the game any time soon. As far as the complaints about graphics and such, the beauty of PC is that you can get Sweet FX and watch as the PS4 users whine about your pretty screenshots.
What it mostly changes are things like small details, like color vibrancy, softness or sharpness of shadows, things that by themselves are hard to really notice without before and after images. Here are some from a website that displays the differences. Granted, with Sweet FX, you can changes a lot of graphical quality things, and the person who took there put wayyy too much emphasis on the monitor edge shading, as you can see by the edges of the screen captures. (Note: These are not my screenshots)

The complaining is actually just me joking. I've yet to actually hear anything from PS4 users about the difference.
EDIT: Here is someone on the FFXIV site who actually customized theirs better than they person I got these from>>> http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...8/forum/56880/
It looks like the "dynamic" setting on my TV. That first one actually looks worse to me with the touch up. The clouds and sky are totally washed out. The second one just looks like the lighting is brighter. Won't get any whining about it from here.
Like I said, the program has thousands of different settings to change, that guys was just the first one I could find without going home (at work right now) and taking shots myself, and I agree, he really messed up his stuff, particularly with not changing the distance edit function to off.
PS3 general support is going to discontinue anyway.
Most console makers quit legacy support a few years after a new model is out. When Sony cuts PS3 support, then yeah, so will SE.
a good read:

like said by Yoshida, is not only the populetion, but the impact of the hardware on the innovation possible that will lead them to take a decision.
honestly most people do have a pc in them house and FF14 don't recquire a very powerfull computer for run it, the escuse of: computer are expensive... is getting old now. especially since a computer ca be used for many thing.
This one.
I was on PS3 before going to PS4, and my friend is on PC, and we sometimes play in the same room. I see little difference between the PS4 and PC in terms of, well, everything except load times. I don't think memory or anything like that is an issue on PS4.
On PS3, however, it is. We got Snowcloak as part of a roulette the other day, and the healer was having trouble staying alive because she couldn't see what the boss was doing. And I completely understood, because I was in the exact same position once before. If boss fights with snow effects have massive framerate stutters and lag up simply because of the graphics, I can only imagine what Heavensward must be like.
I tried to find graphics comparison screenshots, and I couldn't. It seems most people (at least, gaming outlets) aren't even acknowledging that the PS3 version exists. It will really stink for PS3 players, but the system won't be able to handle it much longer.
You mean this?
Youtube Comparison Video of the PC, PS3 and PS4
What's funny is that they aren't the same character. One has larger boobs.
I too used to be on PS3, got the PS4 at launch and even tried the FFXIV beta when it came out. Never went back
The difference really was between night and day and i also agree about dropping PS3 support. Actually surprised it could run HW
I'm on PS3, and that last boss in "The Vault" drops my framerate by a HUGE margin... I'm not even sure how I get my Mudras to function properly during that time lol...
I'll be glad when Square-Enix and Microsoft work out their issues, as I'd like to get this on Xbox One.
Oh PS4 and PC look the same? thats cute, how about remove instancing from the whole game
Consoles Are holding back this game. SE don't want Consoles players at a disadvantage, due to Addons/Custom Huds/ proper dps meter/tps meter, In game AtlasLoot/ff14 xivdb/ Raid UI Scaler, Debuff size scaling/NPCScan last but not least
Deadly Boss Mods
I don't know how much times I need to repeat this, but the PS4 does not, and will never support DX11. It is a Microsoft product, and in the case of the PS4, would be less effective than their current low level API. As for the planned mods with Fallout 4 (I'm not sure what other games you're referring to) they'll likely just be texture and model replacements, or new weaponry, armour, and locations. Nothing that actually messes with the script itself (for example, anything that utilises SKSE for Skyrim, would not be able to work). Not only that, but they'll have to go through an approval process for each mod. That works for a large scale game that'll make Sony millions, but FFXIV and its countless potential UI mods? I doubt it.
The Ps3 is what is holding back this game. Ps4 is a decent machine but of course will eventually start holding the game back later on down the road. FF14 at launch was already pushing the ps3 to the limit but they felt they had to release it because of the 1.0 promise that never happened. I look at the Ps3 now being a toaster and the Ps4 being a low mid range machine. Not everyone will have a higher end machine which I can understand.
Those who say "consoles can't have mods" it's more that people won't want to make the tools for them if the option is released. FallOut 4 will have mod support for consoles, given not all them will work on the console.
