Very good advice. In the forums part, I have used the report button myself and it does work. ^^
Thanks for the heads up!

this thread is a lost cause, though you might want to change the title to evilution of the weak minded. apparently nothing will change from this thread, awareness of personality? people have the right to let lose on the internet and be themselves.
if you suck in a mmo, that means you probably wasted hours of someones time and if he wants to shout you suck then well that type of stuff happens, it's like saying the camera version of a movie on a site is horrible don't' waist your time downloading. there are like minded individuals that don't' want to deal with it. you can't force the world to play with you or get robbed of there time and not tell others. most might not shout it on the rooftops like a bully, but they have it in mind to never party with you and probably will say something when they have to, to ls members, or in a linkshell application, but i bet you think applications are bully pages too, you should read what they are all saying to you or about you sometimes in critiquing it.
if they are spending all day or days or weeks doing it then it's probably what i would consider bully'ing. if it's a single momentary outburst of you suck then whatever. you probably do, and if people really are saying negative things it's probably cause you did something...usually.
i say these things but i've never bullied anyone in my life or made fun of others, i probably spent most my 1st-4th grade being taunted by the same group till they graduated in 8th, i've also been shouted out in swtor for quiting a guild that wasn't up to my standards and they called me out when i was shouting for a new one and it stuck for the day or 2 i couldn't get a guild invite.
but i rather see these "bullies" in the world then lose any freedom at all on the internet. simple as that, don't like a way people poke fun blacklist and move on, i left a full linkshell even in ffxiv cause a couple that i didn't even know or remember playing with at all started to make these comments and jokes bout me and they did it enough that others started to think it was ok to do so. i just dropped pearl and done, never heard from any of them again. making a bigger deal out of something probably will just make a bigger deal from the other. i doubt any of this anti bully stuff works, it just makes things stick even more, make things way more memorable. tell them off, defend yourself, ignore it, but don't try to change the world it won't happen. i mean you hide behind the biggest bullies on the planet ...the usa ...lmao.
tldr, bullies bad, but this whole thread is worse.
lmao, i fear nothing and no one.(knowing when you can or can't win a fight or argument or outnumbers is another thing too) i have huge hopes but they aren't the same as yours witch is what you probably don't get. and another thing you don't get is people don't need to "care" they need to just respect each other, and deal with each other. chances are real life bullies have issues that you can probably blame on 1. there parents, 2. the school system and the way they like to keep our children dumb 3. society as a whole. ...is like trying to remove say the language french from a country that has a continuous flow of french people moving here. lol. you can't change people and there ways, you can only deal with it within yourself.
Hello Everyone,
I have been reading over this thread, and like so many others, it has good ideas but people need to keep from personally attacking one another. If you believe someone is trolling, responding to their comments in any way only gives them what they're after. If you believe a person is violating our Terms of Use, please make a report to a moderator rather than responding, as engaging in an argument will likely only escalate the situation.
Clearly this is a very sensitive topic, so please remain respectful of one another and the opinions of other users. I have said it before here, but I will say it again: If you disagree with someone, feel free to make an argument, but please do not attack them personally. If this thread becomes too divisive and people continue to attack each other, the thread may need to be closed. Please continue to respect the other users on the forum and remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion, though it may differ from your own.
Thank you,
-Verytus
You can. Give me blizzards real ID and make gas cheaper. There are bullies that take it a step further from the game and invade websites. So many fake ids just to spam and keep spamming, no matter how much you ignore them, they will find a way to disrupt your time b/c they have nothing in their life. All it would take is a location and a short drive and a broken nose later and they would never do that again.
When I see the shouts and the harassments, it pisses me off b/c they are not held accountable to their actions. They have no idea who it is that they belittle. Its a game to them. It would be worth my time to see the look on their face when it actually affects them personally.
This is the reason why SE should never go to Real IDs. I just wish the "bullies" would realize for once that someone can snap and do something stupid if given the chance.
Oh and for the people that love the "pics or it never happend". Show me a pic of jesus then.. lol
I think bullying sucks and I really wish it would stop on ffxiv.
Luckily my server has Klaus Volka, so whenever people get bullied he stands up for them and is all like "NO, NOT COOL"
Although he likes apple jack ;x not sure how that makes me feel
But yeah, this is an online -game- so everyone should like just like have fun you know? Mean girls is -such- a great movie because it shows the effect that bullying can have on people. And I think if everyone here watched mean girls they would stop being mean. You know what I'm saying?
I'm glad someone made a post like this. Because bullying is wrong!
@ stral i understand ignoring someone, but what you said is more along the lines of running away from your problems. you were in a linkshell that made fun of you? seems like not my business, but why not tell them to stop ? random people givin u crap for wahtever reason they want is messed up, you got your options sure, but i stand firm if you just run away from problems most the time, they will catch back up to you. im seeing some sense that if someone doesnt like how u act in a pt (pulling, getting/losing hate or whatver makes some person in the pt mad), but its like if someone bullies you you use that as a free chance to not deal with your own problems too. idk if that all makes sense but i think bullying is wrong but constructive criticism should also not be ignored or taken badly when given in non bully way. also on the other hand, sometimes.....
Hater gunna hate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shroud_of_Turin lol
but this ain't a religious thread it will get locked that way.(and if the bully haters had there way then these mods would be locking way more threads, fact as time goes more and more threads, you get banned for rediculous stuff in gw2, can you imagine in 10years or longer what it will be like?) talk about trying to cover the world in nerf foam for just the few.
but your right the id thing is bad idea cause of people like you, it would still never do anything ..most have gotten beaten for doing something, chances are they are still doing it. hell i been hit by cops while trying to cop some weed, i still smoke weed. lol. violence isn't the way to fix things even though your i probably would want to kick the living crap out of lots of people just cause it would be easier that way. it takes a bigger person to not fight, and i think that is what we need more in this world. granted we on a thread bout bullies and they do the beating, we are talking about the internet there is no physical violence. we are complaining about emotions and fellings here.
maybe the only thing that needs to change is a little box to click b4 logging onto the web saying, your emotions are your own and you might have your emotions hurt, log in on your own discretion. also most people doing the trolling are laughing there butts off, they think it is funny. it has nothing to do with there lives, chances are they are just bored and sitting there with a bunch of friends thinking they are funny. guess you not seen some chat rooms back in days of aol, little kids troll into them just to make fun, its like a prank phone call to them. and there is lots of teens in these games.
but this whole thread started over someone seeing another person call another a bad player, that isn't bullying to me. it does hurt feelings and can be annoying but chances are you could lol scientifically take a poll from everyone on the server and show that yes the dude sucked eggs. but he could of been "nicer" that is all, i never call anyone on sucking. most people just leave, or give bs lies like wife agro ...need to put my baby to bed or whatever else ...then never need to play with them again. fact i always have people send behind the scene tells sayign wtf is up with the tank or the whm ..why they not do this or is he the sucks or is it just me? least he knows he should practice more and it's not behind the back like some. leaving the dude to suck for long time till he gets to the bully lmao.
and again i'm not condoning bully'ing ...i am arguing the side that fighting bullies makes you a bully. that the only way to remove them from your world is by taking away a piece of what makes us ..us. and i rather see bullies on this planet then lose a piece of myself. bullies can be handled, in one form or another, they know there crap stinks and there is plenty anyone can to not be standing around his stench.
edit, on TnelisPotencia question, i didn't think of it as running, most higher level shells only seem to have 8-10 really active players that i would consider a static. if there isn't room in that static for endgame stuff then your just a pug in your own linkshell that will take runs when it becomes farm runs and tactics are made. i was really already looking for a new shell, but it was easier for me to drop the shell b4 i found a replacement cause of this. rather then keep it as a social. (wasn't cause i suck either, just how it was, and i don't enjoy vent, so it can be rather hard to find a good team that doesn't use it these days)
Here is where you wrong. I didn't started this post because of someone calling someone a bad player. That's not harassing, that's just being a jerk and those you can just ignore them and move on. I started this thread because someone was pointed out by a rumor that was spreading because of people like him. Constructive criticism or just calling a player a bad player it is not considered harassment unless you take it to the extreme like shouting, /tells, mpk and what not. We have to keep in mind that this is a sensible topic. I will not start something like this just for kid stuff or things that could be ignore with no problems. This person was being accused of something that true or not , the bully got no right of doing. You don't like someone? you ignore him and move on but some feeds from the weaker because again that's their only way to justify their existence in their game. They need to prove themselves worth something. Again this is not about an EMO moment but about a serious issue going on online and it should be taken in consideration.
This is not about physical bullying like some have already discussed in this thread. My thread is about cyber bullying not real life one. One thing they got in common is that depending on the situation it can hurt you as bad as a been bullied in real life. Not fun when you login in the game to find people shouting about you in the middle of a city or even people on /tells telling you what they heard about you. Peer pressure is also present in the game as I said. There is a reputation we play by just as in real life. You build a bad one and it will take time for people to forget. Trust me a bad reputation can make your play time a nightmare. You will not get invite it to any party, people will reject you and you will have to depend on the people that either don't care about the issue or they don't know you. Not fun when you think about it.
ok the biggest question for op then, what you want to do about the cyber bullying on the web?
Right now? Awareness. There is not much that can be done but make people aware that there are some doing these type of things. Oh and btw let me not be so general about cyber bullying because I just want to focus in the game area. Just wanted to talk about bullies in FFXIV. At this moment, Fragile , there is not much that we can do but brainstorm on what could be done and what not. It is just a topic to debate on and maybe even come up with a better strategy to deal with them. Hate the fact that many are been affected and many more will in the future. This is unavoidable but for sure the Blacklist I feel it is not enough sometimes. Enough for someone that will stop there but again there are some that will not stop there.
Awareness isn't enough.
There really is only one solution to cyber bullying.

I'm just saying what everyone else already knows and doesn't want to say. Don't act like its not true.
Whats wrong with bullying in an MMO? I'm doing it all the time. It's so much fun to see the players freak out.
Always worth a laugh.
Please stop bullying people just because they enjoy a television series that is not aimed at their demographic. when you do things like denegrate people because of their likes, you make them bad people, and it becomes OK to do bad things to them. Bullying is bullying, even if you think that you arent really bullying someone. We should use the police power of government to forcible make people watch Oprah so tha they can all understand what bullying does. then we can watch the videos that glorify the victims of bullying. this will end bullying and not at all cause an increase in the desire for people, especially children to want to be the victims of bullying and actually seek out people to in order to be abused. No one who would watch the oprah winfrey show, by force, would think to go to an online sexual offender database to find someone who will victimize them so that they can finally be the one thing that is exalted above all others in all of the propaganda that they have seen.
We can end bullying by just putting people in a camp, that they are not allowed to leave from until they are re-educated. and while they are there, we can make them work hard, because hard work will set you free. in fact, we should have a sign over the door that says just that, "Hard work will set you free," and anyone who refuses the re-education could just be... well, the police presence would rub out trouble.
TL;DR
even Fluttershy became a bully after she first learned to be more self confident. please do not bully people, even if it is because they watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I did not realize it when i was writing my last post, but, oops... Godwin's law: ACTIVATE!!!
Guys don't you get it? bullying is wrong!
I know what it feels like because in real life I'm a scene girl.
And people really hate scene girls for some reason :x
this one time some guy put the wrong hairspray in my hair.. like gross.
But yeah, bullying is not funny or cool. Be nice! or be lice? or something
Also I get bullied all the time on these forums and it makes me really sad ; ; You guys don't want me to cut do you!?
People always make fun of my posts telling me I'm stupid and to go away.
Its super mean
There are many corollaries to Godwin's law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself)[3] than others.[1] For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress. The coupling of this corollary with the initial statement of the law proves every threaded discussion to be finite in length.[8] This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin's law. It is considered poor form to raise such a comparison arbitrarily with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized corollary that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful
aww you technically ended the thread /close. lol.
Almost all internet services games and social networks have a ignore user / blacklist option.
Even though this probably won't prevent the initial griefing you can always utilize this to prevent it in the future.
Personally, don't let it get to you. Remember, your attitude determines your latitude .
First off, no some people can say really awful things and it's not really a "minor annoyance" to have your feelings hurt. Other people's words do have more of an impact than "oh man this guy is annoying". It is very stressful to be the focus of someone who makes it their goal to make you unhappy.
Secondly, this is a video game. No one is really comparing it to real life bullying. Neither are close to one another and they both are handled completely different and any "back in my day" examples do not discredit the harm that online bullying does. Saying you can "turn it off" is also an invalid argument because now you have an issue where other people are forcing you to not be able to use a service that you pay for. It's like telling a kid who's bullied in school "Well you can always just drop out".
And lastly, no. /laugh spam does not compare to real life bullying but when done to harass someone In Conjunction With My Other Examples only adds to the emotional stress. Also, that type of argument you made is a complete fallacy anyways.

OP post seems randomly just copypasta'd in here D:
Once again, too many responses to read through.
Yes, bullying is a problem in all parts of the internet. Unfortunately their goal is to get a reaction, which is exactly what this thread is giving them. For better or worse, there is no "Killing Ifrit" website for XIV that I know of where people can slander each other, but that doesn't mean you can't warn your friends if someone is abusive. Just remember that rumors are rumors - not everyone will believe them, and not all of them are believable.
Someone had already mentioned it but I want to parrot it anyway - remember that this is the internet and you are playing a game. The glory of it is you can screenshot their antagonizing comments to you or another individual, report it (or keep a file to create a virtual "paper trail"), report it to the GMs and advise all those who were effected, including yourself, to put them on ignore. You have the power over yourself - the bully does not have power over you unless you give it to them. Shut their arses right down. I know the tactics have to be different outside of the internet, there is no doubt. However, you have many options here. Just tell them, "Hey, welcome to my blacklist. Have a nice stay." /blist. :)
Also, I see no problem with the OP posting this. This isn't necessarily playing into the hands of a bully. What it does is it tells the bully(s) that we are on to their game, they are going to be taken to task and gtfo basically.
I cannot stress this enough (and others have voiced it) - bullies are fueled by an ongoing negative interaction. Just stop, recognize for what it is and act accordingly.
I guess my point is if you've been through or seen real bullying then online "bullying" won't seem like a big deal. Someone saying really mean things to me online isn't going to ruin my game experience or cause me emotional stress. If you've had real emotion stress in your life this is probably wouldn't bother you either..
I mean if someone saying "really mean things" to you is enough to cause emotional stuff how do you deal with other problems in life? Not to be insensitive but the best thing to do is develop a thicker skin. The fact that you're sensitive makes you a target for things like this. People only will only bother you on the internet if they know you'll let it get under your skin. Don't give people that power to ruin your gaming experience. It's just words and emotes. Nothing more.
Yeah, I can get on-board with this, Searious. The only thing that I would say is that - and this is a sad truth - some people allow online games to consume their existence. Their online personae becomes more valuable to them then their actual physical manifestation. In these extreme and rare cases (I wonder how rare they are?) bullying can be detrimental.
At the same time, if someone develops this then there are a whole boatload of other issues that need to be addressed aside from bullying.
Don't know what are you real intentions, if contributing to the OP debate or just create a problem with your post but either way thanks for trying. Actually you are half right but then again a pointless reply. You are not contributing to the main idea of the thread. Some of the things are not "randomly copied paste" but rather taken from an article by a professional psychologist therefore it does not diminishes the point of the OP. The purpose is to help people understand better on how much can affect us. You will noticed that I added the site at the bottom. So what are your opinions about the article's main idea?
My point is simply that they need to start actually having a presence in the game where people who ruin your gaming experience get punished for it. Developing thick skin has nothing to do with the matter. I am only adding to that core point with arguments from emotion that give reason to my suggestion.
Saying "deal with it" or "just turn your game off" or "grow thicker skin" only gets off the main point that SE needs to solve this community issue. My hope is that they have an actual GM service that does something about online harassment.
So, you got me thinking.
I don't think SE need be involved any more than necessary. It'd have to be fair for everyone, something with minimal involvement on SE's part, and something that wouldn't ruin the game for those that weren't jerks in the first place.
The only thing I can think of is a player feedback system. You would rate a player with a point, positive or negative, after playing with them. Good teamwork and behavior is rewarded with likes and bad behavior is given dislikes or negative reports. Or just do "likes" and leave out negative stuff because everyone hates negativity way more than they like positivism. Either way, once enough points are accumulated and people get around, everyone would have a much better idea about the types of players they're playing with, and jerks/bullies/assholes would have to straighten up or face being ostracized by the community.
That would be the only way I could see SE fixing this sort of thing.
Either that or, not do anything, and just let players sort it out for themselves. Thicker skins and/or more restrictive groups. I recall in XI, most jerks were ostracized pretty quickly because they were ruining the EXP flow and the group's enjoyment. You remembered names of bad players. Not so much in XIV 1.0, where level 50 is pretty easy to obtain....
Yes it does. If you develop a thicker skin these people won't be able to bother you. It will help in other areas of you life as well. If some silly kids in online are enough to cause you emotional stress I can't imagine what kind of effect something more serious might have on you.
Not sure how it does but I wish you the best of luck. Nothing bad bad can come from growing thicker skin.Quote:
Saying "deal with it" or "just turn your game off" or "grow thicker skin" only gets off the main point that SE needs to solve this community issue.
If by "fair" you mean nothing happens to someone who harasses others with no consequence other than some people knowing they are a jerk, then I do not see the justice in that.
I'm not asking for insane bans like Microsoft does on XBL, just warnings and/or temporary jail like they used to do. It's not too much to ask for.
Again with the fallacies. Why do you bring up Real Life in a debate about an MMO? Why ask how I deal other things? I have enough stress in my life without people harassing me and I come to this Video Game made for Entertainment and Fun. Not to "grow thick skin".
At this time I can go off and MPK someone, swear at them till my fingertips are blue, threaten them, spread complete lies about them, get them kicked out of an LS by lying to the LS leader about things they did, cause a complete commotion and cause all sorts of drama and piss off as many people as I want and NOTHING would happen. How do you think this is okay and "fixed" by thick skin?
You got a good idea there but what about people just didn't like how you played or they just didn't like your opinion at some point while running with then? Then they can just be mean and rate you based on their feeling towards you.
For example have you seen the rates of the products at a site? if you checked you can't really based yourself on the reviews because people don't know how to review a product. Their rate are too biased. Some even rate a good product bad just because the shipping and handling was slow O.O. The purpose of rating a product is about the quality and effectiveness not shipping and handling. Anyways these can happen as well with the rating system. Someone might not like you and finds the perfect opportunity to be a jerks and if he got pals on the run then ... yeah. Is def not a bad idea though but it will unavoidable to have bad ratings by some because you were at wrong place and at the wrong time lol
What about if they would actually get involved a little in the rating system. To get this person rated bad you need to send a report and a reason. Then they will check on the date and time that you reported the bad behavior and will add it or not according on what happened. This way we will avoid groupies or ganging up on someone that was not being a jerk to begin with. Lodestone could take care of the rating stats so when you check the player you will know with who are you dealing with. Also positive points or likes can be added and thus improving his bad behavior status bar or something but not necessarily deleting his record as a reminder to behave. I mean if you were jerk once it doesn't mean that you are one. Bad days happens to everyone.
A GM has to investigate - there's no way they can just toss someone in jail just because a player said so. A bad reputation does have an effect on jerks, even though they may not see it right away.
I agree, but I wouldn't count on it before 2.0.Quote:
I'm not asking for insane bans like Microsoft does on XBL, just warnings and/or temporary jail like they used to do. It's not too much to ask for.
Well yeah, that's how it'd work. People would be rating you based on how they felt the rating should mean. Everyone would get bad points, but after 1000 ratings, your character would be mostly accurately portrayed, even if you say, had a bad grouchy night or two. And I think that if you are generally a nice person, earnest, and try hard, people will sense that and rate you with good marks.
This reputation system exists in many other games, and they usually work as intended.
I find that the majority of people who get 'harassed' or 'bullied' actually tend to be the instigator. Most of them have blinkers on, however.
There was this guy on a forum I used to be on, and he'd start so much shit with people, but as soon as someone turned around and took the piss out of him he'd start crying to moderators about being bullied or harassed. I still get emails from him trying to start shit with me. The last time I replied to him (I used to get 3 or 4 a day) he said he was contacting the canadian anti bullying agency.
TLDR: The bullied are normally instigating shit.
