Harassment to Asmongold on his 1st day stream is an Embarassment to FF Community

I've seen an overwhelming majority of people in the community across all forms of social media as well as in-game rebuking the actions of the gatekeeping minority and his fans that were clogging up the screen and impeding his progress. People are taking an issue with a broad brush stroke being painted across the entire player base because of some misinformed no-lifers with a vendetta against him.

Is this community perfect? No. You'll not find an online community that is "perfect" anywhere, the constantly shifting and changing paradigm of what is considered socially acceptable rapidly changes on the internet sometimes overnight. Some people go with the flow, and others go against it. Having played MMOs for nearly two decades now, I can safely say that the XIV community is one of the nicer ones I have been a part of, and I'm proud of that - so I put kindness back into the community when I can by helping sprouts and offering advice when needed to hopefully pay it forward. Not everyone is going to have a great time, because as I said the community is not perfect, which is just the sad truth of the matter when it comes to online games.

While I won't see the actions of a few outliers and declare the entire community at fault, what I will do is express my disappointment with the way the GMs handled the situation when he sent in the report. An automated message in front of 200k people doesn't exactly sit right with me.

Being in EU I didn't watch it live. Did Asmon submit a report against the griefers?

He did, which caused the crowd to diminish slightly. That's good to hear. I just watched a 2 hour highlights that didn't show the reporting part but seeing the obnoxious toxic players swarming him and griefing by killing mobs, stand on npc etc to make the gaming experiencing void was really disappointing to see.

I think most people who are online and play this game and been for awhile has heard of Asmongold, especially if you follow some of the bigger content creators for 14, such as ZeplaHQ.

Despite your claim "don't care" you are pretty vocal here about it and know a lot about it, and Asmongold streaming the game is a good thing, we had over 200k viewers on Twitch yesterday where 95% was in Asmongold's stream. He brings people and attention to the game on Twitch, he was even trending on Twitter I hear.

This is no small feat.

I hadn't heard of him until I saw someone mention him on these forums. Some of you might be surprised to realise the majority players in this game are very casual and probably don't use twitch, discord or the forums, at least for this game. They may use discord to join their Free Company discord at best.

That's valid but those people don't visit the forums or reddit but those who do lurk here and on reddit and being negative nancy and think world if coming to an end, is end of the day giving the community a bad name. I have never claimed (and if I have come across that way I'm sorry for my poor choice of words but english is also my 3rd language) the whole community hates the guy and don't welcome him but the vocal minority is the face out to people who don't play this game.

I don't like blaming the victim, but we should be realistic.. of course this was going to happen.

Look, players generally love the FFXIV developers but, despite that, players still created a similar issue during the last Fanfest when the developers toured specific zones. Some people just like being front and center during an event.

My understanding is that this particular streamer repeatedly stressed, beforehand, that he was looking for an authentic new-player experience and just wanted to play the game. And yet, at the same time he made a point of advertising when and where he would arrive. You can't do that as a celebrity figure and not expect your more rabid fans, your opposition, and spotlight-lovers to show up in droves. And comments from this streamer yesterday make it pretty clear that he was used to this sort of chaos happening.

So, there seems to be a disconnect between what he was telling everyone he wanted (an authentic new-player experience where he can just play the game) and the zoo-like atmosphere he helped set the stage for. What he received was certainly not an "authentic" new-player experience.. most new players don't make public announcements weeks in advance letting the world know when they plan to try out a game. Most new players don't try to turn that experience into an event. If this streamer really just wanted an authentic experience away from the hype, then he would have just quietly tried the game at some point while the cameras were off.

Let's be honest.. this is a business for him, and financially all of this circus was likely good for his business. Sadly, it was likely not good for FFXIV, as potential players sitting on the fence who watched his initial experience (riddled with issues brought on by the masses trying to be part of the event he created) were likely put off by the problems they saw here. And I'm sure it was annoying for the players on that server who just wanted to play the game but couldn't do so easily because of the congestion.

And maybe the developers should take steps towards streamers to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future. However, the truth is there has been plenty of new players streaming their new-player experiences lately, and they've managed to do so without fostering a circus-like environment. People will likely say it's because they don't have the public following this particular fellow has, and there is merit in that argument. But I think it's also, in part, due to those other streamers making a point of creating a more positive atmosphere around them.

Let's be fair, this would happen to any well know/popular person in general, it just has a bigger effect on this person (and I only knew asmon not even fro. WoW but from a video of him reacting to a Dark Souls speedrun lol)

[Also in terms of popular stuff, there is a Vtuber named Ina from Hololive that likes playing ff14 but will never stream pretty much because it would create lots of gathering, congestion and all and she wants to avoid that.]


Regardless of all that, he seems to be enjoying so far so doesn't matter, I feel only bad for the World DC he's in since people that actually wanna play would have been struggling

Just another player that got 120k other players to watch him play FFXIV.

I get it confuses people but I wish people would stop downplaying the impact streamers have within the gaming industry.

They are not just another player. I say this not as a fan, just as a realist.

The people who did that in my mind are NOT part of the final fantasy community. Further they should be completely ashamed of themselves. That is beyond pathetic. Get a life and let the man enjoy the game jfc people are so ridiculous sometimes.

Sry if i dont share your opinion but for me most streamers (and this includes this guy) are nothing more than some kind of leechers which live the easy life and let other people pay for the stuff while most of the people have to do a real job to earn their money. So as you can guess i dont have the highest opinion about these kind of people and thats why i dont care if someone has 10k, 100k or 1million viewers or followers. Wasn't it over 200k? I didn't watch the stream but I had heard it was over 200k. Considering FFXIV had far more engagement on twitch yesterday than WoW and even Fortnite it's massive surge in interest can't just be ignored.

As for the rest of yesterdays debacle.

It was disgraceful levels of trolling and harassment and I hope literally thousands of perma bans result from it. Many will have been his own fans, but not all of them by a long shot. The ridiculous herd that followed him everywhere was probably made of of his own crowd, FFXIV gatekeepers and some confused players who were just curious about the whole thing. Jumping in his face constantly, killing quests mobs and crowding NPC's all deserve bans. His chat is awful, but the guy himself isn't that bad, people really need to grow up.

Uhh, you do know people from Primal, Crystal, and the other Data Centers can't go to that one or enter Cactuar, right? That isn't representative of the entire community because it's one Data Center, and a server overloaded by a bunch of players from across it (since a bunch of Cactuar players couldn't get on). Why we have lot of games that actually ban people for streamer harassment, but square enix doesnt do anything?

Fact of the matter is he reported and tried to get help and the GM just gave a useless copypasta reply and didn't help. Fail.

That is the most annoying thing. We have these Gm's that are so quick to ban people for the dumbest reasons but when a person is getting harrased by players in view of 100k people and they don't do anything. Gm's seem to cherry pick the TOS on what to help with

GMs really need to do something this is just sad esp when the mobs he was killing gets ks'd.

To be honest i've never been a fan of the FFXIV Support team. I have a list of players that are using bot since Stormblood, and they are still playing the game (actually they even have a Free Company only for botters). I don't even remember how many times i reported them, but the support team doesn't do anything.

About Asmongold, imagine you play a game with 200 players following you, killing your mobs, spamming noises the entire day? If you want to see Asmongold just as another player or not, you should be worried about the square enix negligence. He's probably gonna cap level 80 with 200 players following him and the support team is not going to do anything. So i suggest: change the ToS and put that player harassment is not tolerable, unless you are a streamer, then it's totally fine"

Also, i really think that some of the stalkers are actually FF fans that doesn't want to see "A toxic wow streamer". Let's just face it, there are also toxic people in our community

Yeah no at least for the first few level i wouldn't have sent live i suppose... Live stuff ALWAYS triggers ppl, the usually do no goods, attention seekers and plain bored ppl... in his case its even worse as there are bound to be WoW players that wanna make us look bad as well as our own, special friends who love to troll others, or as pointed out ppl who "dont want an Toxic wow player" here... or more of his kin lol

I literally dont know him at all nor do i even care, as i just dislike streaming, no matter what... still hed deserve better and id wished the GMs would react on such things faster... you should not just ignore a rather big streamer...

I think that people are still making the mistake to think Squeenix cares more about their (western) curstomers than Blizzard/Activion to actually make an effort for this one community 'event'.

You do not have to have a high opinion of them but it is foolish and navie to chalk a streamer that is able to put get more viewership then the top 10 FFXIV streamers combined prior to their arrival.

The reality is they are not just normal players, their opinion and experience have far more weight just due to the reach they have.

This is far more then a few people. The reality is this their experience and perception of the game holds great value for many prospective players and SE should do everything they can to make sure their experience is not hampered by external forces far too much since that perception will stick around.

Though end of the day this is why we have the GGGCBTW meme.

Tbh not sure I had to take care of a few things so when I stopped watching he was at around 120k though would. not shock me if he broke 200k.

Though yeah SE should take action.

I really hope this doesn't become a thing, i'm really looking forward to Endwalker and the Gilgamesh aether run's we'll be doing, and.... dang it i hope this just all ends soon.

Nobody deserves to be harassed when trying to play a game. It doesn't matter if they're famous or streaming at the time, either - that isn't an invitation for harassment.

That is generally the price you pay for being a streamer/celebrity, for better or worse. He'd experience it on other games, as practically A LOT of other prominent streamers do.

Not that I condone the behavior at all, because I don't - I find it utterly repulsive and disgusting. But I don't think you can be a streamer the size of Asmongold, and go into an MMO like XIV, and really think you're genuinely going to be left to play the game without disruption - Be it from toxic players, or other players/viewers that want to try and experience the game alongside him on the same server.
