It's not rated M. SE does what it can to keep the rating in the teenage years. The parents did their job. As an adult, you should try to avoid these types of encounters with minors. Your responsibility as an adult does not end, because you are playing a computer/ video game.

SE keeps the rating low enough for teens. That means teens should be able to play without their parents being vilified for it or getting tells or seeing pfs, fellowships, and yells for ERP. Just because SE tries to cover their butts (because they know how messed up it is), it does not mean you have a blank check.

Don't tell me a teen can be shocked by this kind of erp PF subject come on, teens spend their life on youtube, facebook, etc it's just ridiculous.

If we are really talking about children, so ya as a parent even if the game is rated under 16/18 it's at your own risk to expose your child to it at the moment of this game is "online" your child will "meet" lots of kind of people so you can't blame the company itself if your child meet the bad person.

Children can play solo games but certainly not online games or don't cry if something bad happen....

That's no excuse. Yes, teens know about things, but it does not mean adults should see it as acceptabke to advertise it to teens and even engage in this conduct with them.

You seem really fixated on blaming SE and not the adults that are 100% okay with having deeply sexual conversations with minors. Why don't you blame them? Do you think pedophiles aren't a problem? I doubt it. So act like it. If I had a child and they "met" someone like that online, I wouldn't blame SE first, I would be after the adult that groomed or preyed on my child. Because generally that's what you do with the perpetrator. If an adult engages in any sexual activity with a minor, whether it's in person or online, they are the perpetrator of a crime. The one doing the harming is the one you should be blaming. So stop trying to say people aren't making sense by blaming SE when you're the one blaming them.

And I sure hope you're not implying that it's the child's fault if they encounter someone like that on the internet. I feel the need to mention Chris Hansen again, and his show 'To Catch a Predator', where they actually arrested adults who had 'cybersex' with minors online. Now of course, in that case it was pretty easy to do so because they were previously led to believe that the person they were chatting with were minors and they did it anyway. But we're not so much talking about criminal charges against these people in-game, but rather trying to limit the amount that any minor may be exposed to without even looking for it (see: advertising it in PF, ERPing in public, etc.), and also hopefully trying to inform adults who ERP to be more responsible about it. Obviously it would be impossible to try to prevent people from doing it at all, but potentially endangering and exposing it to minors is the problem. This shouldn't even be an argument at all. It seems pretty easy to understand. Adults need to take it upon themselves to be more aware of what they're doing and who they're showing it to. Not SE, not the minor's parents. The potential perpetrators.

I agree. Party finder needs to be monitored and unacceptable posts removed. RMT and Sexually Oriented posts do not belong there.

It's a little baffling that some posters are desperately trying to portray inappropriate sexual content as just being the usual stuff that might be seen in a racy movie. It isn't. Anybody who has played on a role-playing server for any length of time will no doubt be aware that there are a lot of people who engage in creepy stalking and seek to explore their darkest desires online.

I've been playing MMO's since the golden age of WoW and in that time I have seen a lot of weird stuff, plenty of which is inappropriate to talk about here. I've been desensitised to it, though I have sense enough to recognise that it isn't appropriate and shouldn't be tolerated if witnessed.

It's amazing to me that this thread can even have detractors.

Like yes, 100% of the "adult content" portion of XIV should be banned from the actual game.

If you want to commission lewds by all means do so, I couldn't care less, but it shouldn't be something showing up in PF.

By that same token ban all the clear sellers, what they're doing is hardly more related to the game than the erpers.

I don't see an issue with the PF "lewdness" because of this things called "mind your own business".
So...to the one that says "what if there's a legit adult behind the screen!?" like....how many kids do you think is playing this game by comparison to adults? Lol.
Most of these "advertisements" in PF also label as such if they are lewd for the most part saying "18+, mature, etc" soooooo, by THAT point, that is entirely 100% their fault....aka the child, for interacting with that group in PF. Not SE, not the player that created said PF group.

To be fair you'll get someone here saying they found their SO through an online game. That they found "true love". People actually do log into this game for it, funnily enough. You'd be surprised how many people actually do treat FFXIV as a dating sim, and it's not even unique to this game either, you can find them in ESO, WoW or other MMOs as well. Lonely people.

Yoshi P was once asked by a cringy journalist about ERP in FFXIV, and I’m pretty sure he answered it with it being against TOS.

Also, there’s currently a scandal unfolding in reddit about a FC leader that was apparently grooming minors for ERP, so there’s that too.

I get that. I'm basically here to tell others not to judge players for wanting to ERP I guess. Like the God-fearing lalafell buddy above a few comments ago, or to those that saying "it's disgusting"; there's other terms that can be used instead.

Unfortunately, sex is...well a thing that a very large population of people participate in, and is a true social atmosphere (such as brothels, clubs, etc you may be able to find). When I attend these said events, most of the time they are not as "erotic and lucrative" as one believes the may be, either. Most RP is occurring via /telling as well. The only "in your face" stuff there is is typically just the PF stuff, but one can easily just...idk...ignore those? Sure, you see that *gasp* it's happening on your server, but how much does it really affect you people? I'm lost...like are players coming up to you and screaming at you to ERP? If so, man I need to see this for myself to get a good laugh or something.

I mean, unless I'm just a dick. I just literally don't see an issue with players simply trying to find other like-minded players to have fun with. A lot of players like to write, and roleplay, and mingled in there, seems to also simply like sex...so why not lump them in all together.

I mean, PF can be used for other things too, others players haven't gotten creative with using PF other than for intended purposes, and seemingly smut.

I ain’t got anything really against it, sex work is perfectly legal in my country. But they don’t advertise it on public spaces for everyone to see, and selling those services for irl money In FF14 IS breaking TOS.

Also, I’m completely fine if it’s DMs between two Consenting ADULTS. Online, there’s no telling how old the people on the other end are.

Dude, there's a reason why alcohol and sex stuff isn't advertised on TV until late at night, to stop minors from seeing it. There's a reason why there's those checks for ages that you just said, to stop minors from buying it.
THERE'S NO CHECKS FOR MINORS IN THIS GAME. That's why it's against Terms of Service. Also, FF14 is in a lot of different countries, that have a lot of different laws on this kind of thing. Lets try to make sure that people don't break real-world laws in the game, lest the backlash lands on the game itself.

And there's a LOT of IRL money spending in this game. That "HQ feet pics" advertisement that I posted earlier? She wanted IRL money for those. They just move everything into discord so they don't get caught.

Yeap, in my country, FFXIV is restricted to 16+, as that is the age of consent here, and the government set it at that age because people might encounter those types of interactions online, and they want to protect minors.

However, in the United States of America, it's only 13+, and the age of consent over there, is 18. So engaging in any kind of sexual behaviour in-game could be breaking the laws in the U.S, as it could very well be a minor on the other end. You just don't know.
What's worse, is that there are a few people out there when they find out the other person is a minor, they then groom those minors.

I believe that for whoever signs up to go to one of those things is entirely up to them. Most PF have advisories stating such terms that they are generally 18+ so...whatever.
Adults are allowed to do adult things, no matter where. If not here, they have Twitter with way more smut than you see in FFXIV that's for sure; where they also don't have checks for those things either. Or you know, various other places that don't.

EDIT: And, you know what? lol most of the time these events and ERP are in Discord channels, where there ARE CHECKS for age for a NSFW channel. So....

That is not what I am saying. Of course you can't just go do that anywhere but these are usually in tells when they actually take place or even more often on discord where they almost always have a second age check other than when they said it in the first place on the post in PF. The point that I am trying to make is that there are ads for adult things everywhere, there is sex is movies and don't get me started on the fact that every website, every mmo, every game has sexual things in it. Why does it have to be a big deal that people offer services that someone wants it? It isn't breaking any law to advertise adult services, it might be against TOS but they sure don't seem to care because they don't do anything about it.

It isn't going to burn some kids eyes out to see someone saying they offer 18+ ERP. Besides these checks that they do are just like the ones that PHub or any adult website has. You are just clicking a button. It is silly to act like adults won't do these things with other adults, I mean come on.

While offering ERP services through the PF is cringe of various degrees depending on who you are, I'm fairly sure it falls under the same issue people had with clear sellers and the longest point of contention was that unless you can prove real money is part of the deal, SE doesn't really care (outside of actual harassment). Also if I remember correctly Yoshi-P's stance on ERP was actually in regards to him being questioned about RMT for ERP and not ERP itself, in a question posed in a notoriously bad interview/report. Also lest we forget this classic line: Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB. Stuff in public chat is tacky and totally fair game for reporting but unless you have proof of a wrongdoing of any kind, it's unfortunately in the category of having to move along and forget you saw it.

By putting into Party Finder, which is a form of public communication in the game, you're making it everybody's business because you are advertising to everyone regardless of whether they are minors or adults.

Nowhere in the ToS does it state that listing "18+" will absolve the player of any wrongdoing by engaging in activity that is prohibited by the ToS. You still agree to behave accordingly with the knowledge that the other players around you and reading what you put into chat may be as young as 13.

If you want to send a tell to your friend that you know without question is of legal consent age to come over to your personal housing and engage in whatever, SE has no reason to get involved unless you bother your friend after they said "No". You've kept it private between you and your friend.

Soliciting on PF for random players to join you? That activity needs to be stopped.

The game isn't released as a tool for soliciting sexual encounters.

If you need that sort of gratification, why aren't you doing it in a game that's actually designed for it and would have more rigorous tools for screening out minors?

I haven't noticed this on Exodus. Just checked now, I see 24 entries total in PF.

People who mod the game heavily have said the same thing even though IMVU and Second Life are just sitting there ready to use and cheaper than spending $$$ on a sub and cash shop items.

And to further play devil's advocate, there is a matter of community. You are more likely to find people with the same, heh, "tastes" as you in XIV over the types of people who use 18+ virtual chatting.

I Agree with what you said about the over posting, that shit is annoying but you are really taking me out of context here. What I am trying to say is that as long as they are doing various checks on age I don't see an issue with it in general. I don't use them myself, at least I haven't but my wife was interested in doing ERP services so I scoped them out to see if I could help her figure out how things work. My issue with this whole thread is that people are acting like it is some how horrible for a teen playing a teen game to see someone offering those services. Lord knows they probably see worse on twitter.

This game is meant to emulate a real world of sorts and people especially right now are spending as much time in game as they do in the real world, so of course these things are going to sprout up and I get that it is annoying if you are not into that sort of thing but to say that adults seeking out other adults to ERP with or to pay to ERP with is somehow going to burn out some kids eyes is a little silly. As long as they don't have anything graphic and they are simply letting people know that they offer it WITHOUT SPAMMING, then why is it an issue. Assuming they are all doing the proper checks and ERPing as adult characters with both people behind screen having confirmed that they are 18+. Oh and as long as they aren't asking for real cash for TOS reasons.

Um. Crystal is like the public RP Datacenter. At least Mateus is (where my alt lives). There might not be any PF listings as bad as other datacenters but a walk through Ul'dah is... More of an adventure than it is in on other datacenters. Especially the Quicksand.

On Aether I don't have to worry about seeing pages of badly-written subtext as emotes. I will gladly take cabaret /bordello/bar advertisements at the bottom of PF where age restrictions are clearly marked over forced RP convos in a chat I can't block.

There are no proper checks. People claimed the checks cannot be done without a 3rd party app with voice or video in this very thread. They also said verifying in such a manner was creepy. It is fine to think that is creepy. However, why anyone thinks talking to an adult in voice is creepy, but having sexual conversations with someone that could be a minor is not I will never understand. Grooming exists everywhere online, and FFXIV is not immune to it. Lack of oversight allows it to occur.

After conversing with some players who have "worked" in such "establishments," I've come to find that many of them did not allow, or even bother, with the "enhanced services" on offer, for their "customers," if the "customer" could not even do basic RP, or even feel remotely underaged, for all the reasons people wouldn't want them to and more.
I wouldn't engage in it, myself, but I think, when you're trying to roleplay an entire living world, every part of a living world is going to start cropping up in the roleplay, even for things that someone who's more prude would not enjoy (myself included, although I've seen some Roes and Hrtothgar, and, well... hmmm... >_>). I can't fault it for existing, and I'm not personally arsed (especially since it's not like we have people out and about hitting up passers-by with slapper tickets offering services up front) that they're advertising another element for roleplay.

Blatantly advertising in Party Finder for just eRP is awkward, but, outside of the blatant ads (which can certainly be reported, have fun), chances are, you're really just seeing an ad inviting you to look at an FC that's offering a "customer service setting" RP to serve "drinks" in exchange for a small amount of gil, in a moody bar-like atmosphere, and it's actually really not as salacious as one thinks it would be.

To be honest, if we're going to be upset about this, we should probably never let things like a butt slider become a thing, because we'll be calling attention to parts of the body which can lead to unsavory thoughts, and younger people would have difficulty controlling (and, sometimes, coming to terms with) their urges once those thoughts take hold. Is such a statement dramatic? In a sense, yes, but so is being upset that other players want to RP, in private, with other consenting parties, and don't air their dirty laundry for all to see and know the specifics of their interactions.

it depends whats being advertised. A lot of the Brothel's are RP based and are stuff done in game between two players. (And to be frank, they have some of the more interestingly designed houses). Unless you want the Devs policing player interaction at all levels, there's not much to be done, unless there is compelling evidence for something pretty dark going on.

There are other content, however, that I think needs to be curtailed. Using PF to overtly solicit off platform adult or near adult activities should be removed.

As long as they don't have anything graphic and they are simply letting people know that they offer it WITHOUT SPAMMING, then why is it an issue. Assuming they are all doing the proper checks and ERPing as adult characters with both people behind screen having confirmed that they are 18+. Oh and as long as they aren't asking for real cash for TOS reasons.

At any rate, I more than likely won't pop up in this particular thread any longer, since it seems whatever I'm saying is clearly being taken out of context, and clearly missing the point I'm trying to convey here.

So I just learned CTRL+W closes a tab as I was in the middle of replying and tried to press SHIFT+W. And I am NOT retyping all that again.

So uh, just gonna say advertising a resource for other players to find these lounges, that's cool. But openly advertising straight up ERP- is not. And it doesn't matter what the kids saw before. If you hear someone swear, you don't go dropping F bombs in a classroom. That's just bad manners.

A determined cunning and manipulative predator roaming this game will find a victim as easily without the PF as they can with it. The PF is not their main avenue to finding and attacting victims its the chat channels. There are teens and full grown adults who play this game that are easily manipulated, easily tricked into trusting someone and handing out personal info. Should the advertisements be removed..Yes. Will it hurt Predators: Yes and No just depends on the predator and the victims. Will it save SE from trouble not really cause once again chat channels still exist, and SE cannot monitor every conversation in this game 24/7. SE will do what it can too keep the game a safe place to play, but like it or not players have to do their part and be responsible for their own actions or lack of action.

And if they do manage to worm their way into a minor's personal space, then that is very unfortunate. But the goal is minimization as well as upholding the ToS. A bank has a bullet proof glass for tellers, should I bring 10 grenades? Irrelevant. Because the point is... there's bullet proof glass for the thousands of common thugs to not shoot the poor ladies in the face whilst demanding the money.

Removing Erp Advertisements from the PF(Which yes they should be removed) is like knocking the cherry off a Sundae. Its not minimizing so much as its just removing Evidence of its existence from view.
