It's 2017, when can we get a prominent LGBT character in the storyline?

Only if it has blue hair, preferabily in some variety of mohawk or emo hairstyle, and constantly berates Gosetsu on the fact that female Samurai make on average 77 Tsujikazes per 100 male Hanakaze rotations.

In all seriousness though, i do not see how the orientation of most npcs even matters to begin with.
I will not cry if they add a LGBT character but i do not see how it is a NEED either.

This thread was made with the sole intention of stirring up a fight and getting attention, and has the awful side effect of reinforcing people's negative feelings towards LGBT representation. And yet everyone, knowing who the OP is and what he does on a daily basis, happily jumped into the pit to argue with eachother and spout their awful opinions.

This isn't some dumb troll thread about some dumb troll issue, this is a thread that has a real consequence in inciting ill feelings towards a community that already has enough issues with that without god awful people like Skyrior contributing to it.

CoD is referred to as genderless in every other iteration of the character. It may take on a female appearance but it's pretty much just an entity comprised entirely of... well, darkness. Darkness doesn't have a gender.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the WoL is a clean slate in that aspect, so we technically already have a LGBT prominent character if the player chooses to be, not to mention the lore writers leave the extremely close interactions of Haurchefant and Aymeric up to the interpretation of players.

So far I've found every opposing post pretty reasonable, except for yours, "If you want to play as a LBGTQ, go play Overwatch. I certainly do not want that in this game." went far ahead what anyone else has said so far, crossing the line of bigotry.

The game doesn't have a lot of romantic or sexual innuendo. What innuendo there is comes from two different male characters in the MSQ toward the WoL, which can be a man.

I know SE will probably not make her transgender but she looks like a great character for a transgender woman :). She is strong and beautiful, I saw her and thought she would be transgender :P.

EDIT: I saw the title and thought it would be a serious thread. Skyrior's threads seem to be about stirring the pot rather then making a serious discussion :(. So upset now.

I know this was mentioned already and I also know that the OP loves trolling but still:

We already had a character in the MSQ that was open to everyone: Haurchefant. And his attraction to the player was even much more noticeable in the Japanese version of the game. So its not like SE ignores this. Also there is a gay couple in a side quest and you can marry whoever you want.

I have nothing against them introducing another gay/bisexual character in the MSQ but please dont just create characters for that reason alone. If his/her sexuality is part of his/her background and a reason of how they are today then its fine if they hint at that but I just dont want someone in the game just for the reason of "omg look at me I am gay". I kinda feel like this would not be nice for rl LGBT players too.

This is a tricky one simply because you would need to introduce the character first and foremost so you don't just automatically think "oh look the token gay, transgender character, SE just ticked a box"

You need to add a character into the game slowly, get to know them 1st before exploring any personal relationship they bond, as the story progresses over time have the character openly share feelings and express them. But this would then go on longer than most people would care for and it also lands into the trap it could be mishandled.

It might be 2017 but regardless SE don't want to put themselves in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Personally I have no issues of them adding such characters, as long as they fit the story narrative and are not there just to please a section of the fan base. I want a character that means something

What exactly does an LGBT character look like? Act like? As far as I know we have never followed any character to bed, this isn't Mass Effect. The fact is that in this game sexuality.... and bathrooms... never come up. They could all be LGBT and we would never know it. Now if your asking for a "gay character" as in a catty stereotype well that's a bit shitty I'd say.

Don't assume a strong, successful, powerful person isn't LGBT just because they aren't "acting gay". Whatever that means.

I look at it like this. The goal should never be to create a <insert minority type> character for the sake of having such a character present. The goal should always be to create an interesting and engaging character first and foremost. Then later in the process, when you're fleshing out the little details, personality minutiae, etc., you can determine a sexual orientation if desired, and whether or not the players will ever actually know about it. Merlywyb could have a harem of ladies we don't know about, because we just don't engage with her on such a personal level. As a gay man myself, I'd rather a character be organically part of the story and not wedged in for the sake of meeting some sort of diversity quota.

Why? It doesn't matter what year it is. If they chose to make a character like that it should be by their own creative effort to deliver a good story, not because someone feels like they need to be represented in a videogame.

You don't read a lot of the NPCs' dialogue just spread out around the game do you?

A) Lalafell talks about how he wants to be taken by Raubahn like he's the sultana.
B) Lalafells talk about getting it on with others.
C) Roe ladies talk about feeding men foods that are supposed to boost libido.
D) Ishgardian couple who eventually ends up in Idyllshire working the hard life.

I can go on and on, and on.

And then we have the one couple from Wanderer's Palace.

If everyone is LGBT then there is no reproduction going on at all. No characters would exist. For any story to exist as a stable base you -need- characters capable of reproduction. It helps that story continue if enough of the existing characters can also reproduce and thus have new characters for the future narrative.

I'm not complaining, I'm just saying the LGBTQ crowd already has two up so asking for more when the game largely isn't romantic in nature seems out of place.

Looks like in 2017 you still assume the sexual orientation of countless characters who make absolutely no mention of it.

In Final Fantasy XIV VERY few characters make the slightest mention of any sexual orientation, identity or romance at all. It simply isn't the focus of this game.

There is zero reason for the team to change that in order to make some sort of "statement."

You can feel very free to think up your own fanfiction filling the hundreds of blanks that the writing team quite evidently left to your imagination. I'm sure you'll find your personal Alphinaud X Warrior of Light and Cid X Raubhan headcanon perfectly enjoyable. Personally, I have a preference for Ysayle X Hilda, but to each their own.

Making characters that appease to this or that group isn't and shouldn't be an obligation.
