They should force segregation on everyone and cut down the amount of servers so they're all full.
See how "forcing" logic works?

I've always appreciated the international aspect of Final Fantasy Online, and how there is activity 24 hours a day because of it. Not everyone always gets along, but that happens even if you isolated servers by country. I appreciate having the opportunity to bridge the gap across very different languages and cultures. It makes the "meta-game" so much more enriching that way.
Not necessarily, worldless content should help with this. You many not be able to run down to Iron Lake with a party, but you'd might be able to gain SP in other activities.
Won't be quite the same thing, I understand, but at least with the worldess model those in the minority time zones won't be completely up the creek without a paddle.
While I am sad to hear about these servers, at the same time, there's no point in trying to make anyone do anything they don't want to do. There are Japanese who read our threads you know. How would you feel if someone said you should be forced to do something? This thread just enforces their need for language specific servers. It's not helping against it.
Really, I didn't see the need for language servers to begin with. People who didn't want to interact have already segregated themselves. But now that the announcement has been made, there is no going back. Simply due to the group nature of the Japanese, I can see most of them going to the language only servers, simply because their friends did, not because they really wanted to themselves. But that is their choice, and there is nothing we can do about it. :(
Additional thought: One thing about having language/global servers, at least you will know the people on the global servers want cultural exchange. Maybe it will make them a nice place to be. *hopes*
It should definitely stay as is, there is no reason to segregate people by race. Its ridiculous any other way. Also, I'm in the situation wherein 90% of the time, I have to play with Japanese people anyway. It's fine, I know the language enough to get by, but I wanna be with people that I can speak English too as well, because, that's my native tongue, I can speak it perfectly, without a weird language/communication barrier.
I live in Australia, it's only 1-2 hours time difference from here to Japan, and almost a 12 hour difference to America, and it's just as bad for Europe, what this means is, if this was implemented, either I would be forced to wake up at 5am, and skip school to get things done as a group, or be forced into solo play, unable to do things that I'd really like to do, such as, Ifrit, for a recent example.
So to mimic the OP, please, SE, do not implement this. It is a horrible idea.
I'm from the U.S., but I lived in Japan for seven years. What you say is absolutely not true. It is a myth that is especially prevalent among Final Fantasy XI players. People in Japan are for the most part much less nationalistic than people in the United States. Racism exists in Japan as it does in the U.S., though it is of a somewhat different variety. Naturally, xenophobia also exists. But the image you have of Japan does not reflect reality.
Ummm... i did not get that. Im 100% sure he was talking to me. If i am wrong then i take back what i said about him but i did not think i am. Also who are you? i Love it when people say... "o why am i replying" then all they do is reply... thats what trolls do son...
Well i did not get that. After his first part of his post where he talks about me not liking JP players was fasle i did flare up. No where did i say that. so excuse the flare i do not like it when people say stuff that i never said. Either way i will live beause what i said stands.
DO NOT put words in my mouth.
I am 100% against segregated servers.
Ping is an issue, yes. But what made you think that language specific servers will physically resides in their respective region? Do you think that French speaking servers will be placed in France or Euro
I am 100% against segregated servers.
Ping is an issue, yes. But what made you think that language specific servers will physically resides in their respective region? Do you think that French speaking servers will be placed in France or Europe? For all you know ALL servers would resides in Japan.
OP has summed it up very well. And I do agree as to how and why so many Japanese players would want their own servers. There are several moments when I, too, shy away from any contact with strangers in the game, especially when I just run into some random assholes. It makes me feel afraid of other players, and feel paranoid about their possibility to be rude or cause me some headache. This is mainly why I don't join any shout party and don't pick up random strangers (total strangers, I mean) in my party.
This is not all because of FFXIV, since my server Palamecia has a lot of nice people and I have seldom run into big bad bastards (but yeah whenever I ran into one, OMG they're HORRIBLE!) I played other games too and whenever I am put in the lobby or join the room with players who're either sore loser/troll/rude/asshole/total jerk/I am here to ruin everyone's game type of players, it gives me a tough time trying to convince myself to play in public game/room/party again. So, having experienced similar feeling through online gaming before, I could very well understand your point of view about why Japanese players are sort of phobic in the game.
Back to the main topic, about the Japanese server, I would have nothing against it, though, as we will still have the freedom of choosing which server we want to play on. The ONLY, and I really mean ONLY, thing that would bug me about is is that I have some Japanese friends in FFXIV, though not as many and not as close as back in my FFXI days. What IF when Japanese server happens and my friend's friends and/or Linkshell decide to go to Japanses server? Of course my Japanese friends would want to follow, to stick around with his/her group. Then they will be torn between 2 thoughts, to stay with international friends they have made or met, or pack up and leave with Japanese friends. In practice, if I were them I would reluctantly choose to pack and go with my group. Because yeah who else, if not the people from your country who are in the same timezone as you, would be guaranteed to show up in the game at the same time as you or be able to make it possible to form static party or arrange appointment to do stuff in the game at a specific time of the day on regular basis?
One wouldn't want to be left alone on a server where most people log in at different hours from yours. How sad it is, I would have to leave in order to be able to enjoy the game as a group, not solo.
In real, I would, too, be sad if my Japanese friends leave because then we won't be even able to get in touch in-game, not to mention to do in-game events together or go EXP together. It's gonna be real sad and lonely to lose friends due to server separation.
I agree with most ppl on here that segregation of servers is bad. When I played 11 I had many JP friends and were very helpful. Sadly I haven't really had the chance to meet any in 14 because of the lack of party search function. But lets not narrow it to just Japanese, I enjoy playing with all nationalities from around the world. Keep the servers global....
I'm really impressed at the depth of the discussions taking place here. We can't say definitively which is the prevailing opinion on these matters, but one thing has been made clear: many have been able to form bonds with others throughout the world, JPN or otherwise, within the current system. I, for one, think this is a great thing. In the next few days, I'll take some time to translate some of the Japanese forum discussions on the matter, so we can understand what they are thinking on the other side of the pond.
Hi Reverser,
Great topic.
Here's my vote *for* Global Servers to continue to be the main option (most plentiful) for Final Fantasy XIV 2.0.
Playing with people around the world is one of the reasons I enjoyed Final Fantasy XI and XIV so much.
If they have Language-Specific Servers as an option that's fine, but please maintain the existing world servers as Global (and here's to hoping they're not the minority (i.e., I hope most servers are Global to allow more cross-pollination of cultures and to have a more colorful gameplay experience)). :)
Thanks!
Did I miss something? Language-specific servers? The newest outline says World Servers, with matching across all worlds..?
Hi Neptune,
Yah there's cross-world matching service for content but it's from Yoshida-san here:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...289#post400289Quote:
Setting up dedicated language-specific servers (to have language specific/global parallel worlds)
Thanks.
The solution is quite simple; Don't bind characters to a "world" but give us the possibility to choose which server to log in to after selecting a character. That way if someone feels like playing on a language-specific server can do that and change back to a global server/another language specific server at will.
I met some great people in FFXI because the servers were forced global, taking that away from FFXIV is a huge disappointment because it won't be the same experience if a choice is involved. I never understood the point of a segregated server anyway, you can still choose to seclude yourself on a global server.
I think it's sad if most servers end up being region favored. Looking back on the years I spent in FFXI I was in multiple socials, one end-game NA ls, one end-game EU ls and one Dynamis/Salvage JP ls. I did enjoy the variety and the fifferent experiences that I got from all these. I also had multiple friends from all regions whom I helped and got help from.
The idea that Japanese players won't play with any other players from around the world is false, if you take some time to be humble and make use of the auto-translate function then there's usually no problem. However for very calculated and specific team-based events such as for example end game events I can see a problem, but that's not to say that there's any problem in co-existing.
At the moment I do random things like Behest and Xp-parties, most of these times I have ended up playing with japanese simply because they where available and eager to do those. If you take them away from my server then my active hours are going to be pretty darn empty, at the same time if I join a Japanese server then I end up being at a disadvantage when it comes to socialization and making friends in general.
Is it really so bad to co-exist the way we do now? Like this we can have a high activity all day and cross cultural exposure.
If no character is bound to a server then there is no lowest/highest priced server. It would be like having one global server with channels to switch between. They could even go as far as to move market wards/AH to a separate server so that there are no server-specific wards.
I myself am for global servers as they are now though.
Please keep servers global. if you need excuses as to why you should do just that. then here are a few.
1) lower server maintenance costs, More cash for better upgrade solutions for current server platforms.
2) not getting the feeling of playing alone, sometimes i must play at off hours. while i cant read it the player to player conversations lets me know I'm not alone out there.
3) Racism is the byproduct of both ignorance and segregation. if we lived in such away today, my world would begin in California and end in Virgina, English would be the only language in existence, we would all drive the same vehicles, we would all eat the same food, all watch the same boring American films, all pray to the same god, all the building would be built the same. What a dull and boring way to live, wouldn't you agree?
4) Square Enix has set the stage for global servers, Something many wish they could but in the end all fall short. Are you really willing to abandon the Future of online gaming where the entire world can connect and play as a collective for something so Short sighted as Regional Servers?
Its your ballgame now, the Audience of the World Awaits Eagerly. whether or not you hit a homerun, or Strikeout. only time will tell.
for me being half I'm 1/2 on this decision but it's optional anyways so don't really matter.
If you want to play within your own community go ahead, as for me I'd rather play with both and I have an advantage by being able to speak both so I'm cheating lol.
I for one know both good and the bad side of both Japanese and Americans living in both culture through out my childhood.
I look American so I got bashed in Japan being called Gaijin and people doing some stupid shit to me, throwing dirt while walking back from school, breaking my bicycle's chains so I can't ride home, ripping my back pack...
I only spoke 30% or less English when parents moved to Hawaii so I was called a Jap at same time I thought American community was like Japan where I can lend my video games or anime videos or Gundam stuff I had later to find out everything never came back. Was stolen :) Nice to find out one of them even broke into my house later on and steal 300+ of my Famicon, PC Engine, Sega, games and although me and my father found the stolen games we were never able to get them back since the police said we didn't have any receipt proof... although all the games I owned had my family name marked on it with a permanent marker.
Now aside from all that s*** I grew up, got familar with the American culture and started making friends again and all that so it was cool, now happily married and with 2 kids which are 3/4 Japanese 1/4 American. Whenever I visit Japan I act as a gaijin just to see what the JP people would say when they see me. If they say some crap about me they got a surprise waiting :) Anyways back to topic....
I know how FFXI was before NA release and after. I tried to run a linkshell prior to NA release since there were NA players trying to play FFXI on JP client and having hard time reading Japanese and that turned out into a linkshell where we tried to get both JP and NA players and me and my wife and few others to help communicate between players to have fun together (was really nice linkshell)
JP's problem
- they want to play but have hard time communicating and can't use the auto-translator since it's really hard to use
- they can't understand how some NA players join party kill 5 mobs and just suddenly leaves party, or once they level up they just drop party. In Japanese gaming culture that's not normal so after a while JP players started staying away from NA for that reason. Now I mentioned this before on FFXI unofficial forums and was told mind my own business from the NA player and was told they have a life so they have to leave whenever they have to go... sure I can take that if you have emergency you gotta go. But If you're playing normally, hey at least you can say I gotta go in ___ minutes (JP side normally gives like 10-15 minimum)
NA's problem
- even if they wanted to join party with JP players JP guys says JP ONRY (It does happen and started getting worse because of those small groups of NA players that don't have any manners.)
- communication problem just like JP but imo NA side's auto-translator works better?? not sure on this one seems NA players use the auto translate more imo.
- Age, I believe NA players player range is a lot younger than Japanese players, I know there are players as young as 8-12 year old playing FFXI (don't say it's not true, we saw you at Fan Fest with your whole family lol) while on JP side it's more of high school / college students and up. Because of this I also think it has some issues where some 'kids' are immature.
Both JP and NA players have a good side and bad side. It's just those stupid players on both sides that loves to ruin it for the rest of the community...
I say just let them play however they want to play; if that makes them happy playing in their own community go ahead. I'd rather play globally with players from every region/country. You learn more stuff that way :)
Yes, i agree both the JP Player base and the NA Player Base have "problems", but how are we to work out these problems if Square Enix is so willing to Cave-in. i just feel the bridge that was built between the shores of Japan, America and Europe in XI are about to get Demolished, and no one in a position to change it is giving it a second thought.
I don't understand why they should do it.
I never played FFXI, but in XIV, I did play with japanese players a few times. We used auto-translator, or if one of them knew english, he translated most of the things for me. They were very nice actually. Never got kicked or anything.
Also, I never seen anyone rude on my server (Fabul). Actually, some random people gave me gears they didn't need anymore because they noticed it was better than what I have. :o
maybe part of it but not all
ima US citizen of of nationality but i fluently speak both and i started FFXI when i was in japan
I tended to want to play with the JP back then, and even sometimes now if its not my LS. cause compared, a good load of nonJP have:
- lack of attentiveness/dont pay attention
- AFK a ton
- dunno how to play their class
- god they boast alot
The JP have no problem playing with foreigners as long as they are skilled and attentive. They will certainly remember who you are. Nationalism, just sounds like a poor excuse. You dont have to be JP to not wanna play with a bunch of non attentive AFKing pple who leave in 30min.
The more you complain and make it a issue, the more its gonna be a thought in a developers mind. The JP arent the ones that are gonna loose out if the servers get segregated. Also alot of the strats will be lost.
NONjp - i noticed that they post their alot of their success wins but they never post their strats (or at least till later) thus only a limited group grows
JP - their every strat is posted all over fan forums once they challenge it. I guess you can say that their whole 'nationality' grows cause they arent focused on being the 'first'. Which, if i were to join a server, id pick the one with this mentality.
@ Reinheart
i got harassed cause i was tan from hawaii >.>
aside from that,
i prefer playing with JP players and my LS NA players.
i prefer talking to NA players more cause their hella casual.
i think half my grinds had least one jp in it and tons of all jp groups, fact they were usually my favorite groups. like rein said they grind happily all day and i like that. i don't make groups so people can just jump off in 30mins or u'd never get a invite again either way. i'd make a grind pt and little by little one by one i'd be replacing everyone, exept for like one person end up being there the hole run, lol was almost always a jp dude. ftw
i just used auto translate and all went well, if they said jp only it usually only took there being one other jp in group for that person to join up. maybe it was cause all my invites started with Long Time Party in the translate lolol. but i never had any issues. maybe getting in a few but i made most my groups but i can understand why. but to separate servers is just dumb, specially if we don't get servers in the usa for at least make it better. there is no real gain in this, only people who want things there way will get there way with this type of server separations.
If there are language specific servers and most of the Japanese move out I'll be very disappointed. I love meeting Japanese people and partying with them.. practicing and learning more Japanese. It will just be a huge huge disappointment.
Sometimes the only groups I can find are Japanese because I'm nocturnal, even though I'm in Canada (EST). ._.
Something else I'm wondering though... is what the heck happens to our current server groups? Besaid is the unofficial RP server.. I'd like to stick with them. I wanna know.. will there even be a Besaid after the move? If not... I wonder where people will go. SE splitting up whole servers (and linkshells) seems messed up. Perhaps all the current servers will stay "global"? And there will be an option to move to language specific/region specific servers.
It would be bad enough if the Japanese leave us, I don't want to think about current servers being thrown all over the place.
I am Japanese American, born in America so don't know any Japanese.
I still would want to play on the English servers because I rather play with people I know I can send a tell to and not have any language issues, even though my ethnicity my be Japanese. I played FFXI and I know how many JP people from Japan were for the most part really rude to non JP speaking people, almost never would want to join your party. Basically had enough of that kind of stuff.
If you like mixed servers then play on the global ones. You guys that want to force people to all play on global servers is kind of dumb. Just let people pick which ones they would rather play on they are giving you a choice. You don't like EN only servers then don't play on one.
I hope you're right about that. Seems most likely.
-----
For people like me, who often play on Japanese time and might end up having a hard time finding groups if they leave, I wonder if SE's soloution would be "cross-server dungeon finder." T_T
Something I don't really intend to use. I want to party with and make friends with people on my server, not people I'll never see again.
What's the argument about, you'll have both global and language specific servers. People can go play where they want, which is how it should be.
I personally don't like being able to communicate with only 50% of the server. For example, I saw some guy walking up and down Uldah today and i thought it was amusing so I sent him a tell. And then I probably ended up offending him because I had to try and explain myself using auto-translate since he spoke japanese. I'd rather be able to communicate with everyone on my server and not be afraid that they can't understand me or that I will offend them.
This ..
What is it with US players and AFK so often, I do find that incredibly rude, sure I get that people have stuff to do but sometimes they keep you waiting for so long, if you got something to do like that why even join a party, just say I may be away for 30 mins maybe you would rather find someone else.
Like Rein said also its common courtesy to say 10-15 mins prior to leaving a party that you will be leaving, but some just ding and leave.
Obviously Europeans can be very similar in the way they act to Americans but I do think there is a bigger lack of manners from US players.
And the know it all boasting is enough to drive anyone mad.
Depends the global population at that time anyway. I am pretty certain that SE will use version 2.0 to consolidate servers. If the population do not raise by a significant amount, do not expect to keep 18 Worlds + localized Worlds. Especially if a lot of JP players (or even French/German players) move on to dedicated localized servers.
Some players just want to move for a simple reason, timezone. Surely that is barely an issue for NA/JP players if they play during their timezone prime time, but that can be really problematic for EU players on a World where the EU population is low. I won't even mention FR/DE players unable to speak English/Japanese. They are unable to communicate with 95% of their server, or even more. May ruin the "MMO experience" for some of them.
{Auto-Translate} have its limit. I personally like to talk "just about everything" with people I am playing with. Luckily I do speak English so I'm fine, but if I didn't and could only speak French or German, I would most likely move to a localized server. Not because I don't like others, but just because I want to be able to fully communicate with others. (= more than 5% of my server population).
