I also think this deserves a dev response and some form of action on SEs part. Personally I don't experience problems with lag enough for me to complain about it, and that's with a 3mbps dsl connection in a town that's literally in the middle of nowhere up in northern Canada. I have experienced getting hit when vastly out of the red zone a few times however (not enough to keep me from beating titan or do coil) and given the number of complaints posted here on a daily basis about it there definitely needs to be some form of response besides the typical working as intended answer we're used to.
I've gotten used to the lag from 1.0 so much that I can play around the latency. All the fights are formulas so you know what's going to happen at all times.
True but for once I would like to play the game the way it should be played instead of playing memory.
Alpha, Beta 1,2,3 was no problem for me, then suddenly phase 4 (open beta), I can't dodge simple stuff again, I managed and learned how to dodge those, but having to do this for everything now and what may come in future, it's gonna suck lol. I thought the whole purpose of splitting data centers was to fix the latency issue they had for players playing outside of Japan. I had to say goodbye to all my JP LS guys on my main character (still got 2nd char there so not really goodbye, but I don't party or antyhing, just login to chat) so I can play without major lags causing problems to the entire party and I'm here lol.
I know people heard this one over and over on this thread, but I'm also not having this issue in other online games, I have lags but XIV ARR's lag since open beta is bad, best part is with every maintenance it gets worse for me lol. Everytime I party now I just pray I don't get hit and die from the lag issue, and everytime I get hit on something I should've been able to dodge (I dodge on my screen) I feel really terrible and sorry for the party for causing more headache for everyone. I would stay away from battle class but the market is so messed up right now crafting/gathering doesn't even get me excited, and like everyone else I want to battle, I want to get relics and relic+1 and AF+1, but with this latency issue it makes it harder and harder to play every time.
/sigh
All you have to do to beat Titan is not get hit. You would win if you would just stop getting hit.
I notice that if I keep moving my position is updated more often and I get a much more generous window in which to dodge.
What they need to do is get rid of the need to stop moving while casting altogether and instead just make you move slower for the duration of the casting - that makes one less "check" the server has to do in order to make a spell cast successful.
Replace the cancel by movement with another method of cancellation entirely.
So I played on Masamune for the majority of opening and just recently moved to Excalibur.
I beat Titan about 5 times on Masamune, this is from Washington, USA.
I had to pre-dodge everything and STILL pray that I got out of it.
Moving to Excalibur was like getting a buff on my character, I lol at all his abilities because I get almost not lag. Rarely do I get hit by plumes.
Yes, you can sit there and say "pre-dodge" but the mechanics should allow you to see it and THEN move and be safe. Not the other way around.
Having to pre-dodge is bad game design. That being said, I believe they will work on it in the very near future or make some changes which I believe they already have in 2.1. I guess we will see when it drops :)
First it was our ISP's (yeah right) and then it's from not zooming out.. Whats next? our parents, siblings, wife's / husbands, etc using the internet while not home? Come on square stop making pathetic excuses and just fix the issue you know is there, happening on your clients and servers!
This was how it originally was in 1.0, but was changed after Yoshi took over because it didn't mesh with how Yoshi envisioned casters operating. It would have made me much less angry if he hadn't specifically cited PVP with a several paragraph narrative when he was explaining his reasoning for the change. So yes, before PVP was even on the horizon it was already disrupting the game. -_-
My cast bar wont even go that far if I make any kind of movement.
Still can hardly ever dodge Weights, particularly post-heart. Tomorrow I'm going to try using ethernet instead of wireless, I guess... that's all I can think of that might help.
I have to say I'll be a mite sad when they fix this, as I love the fact that I can move my Thaumaturge with about .5 seconds left on her cast bar and get the cast off regularly.
Oh wait, no I won't, because it's BS and I've never seen it happen in an mmo before even though I've been playing em for 13 years on various computers and connection speeds.
did a little test with my friend yesterday and found out that the measured latency with ping is not relevant
my friend have 150 ms and can cast 7 esunas in row
then he tried the same with battleping and could not cast even one, latency with battleping was roughly the same, 150 ms
that means his ISP is throttling the FFXIV communication for some reason and leaves the ping packets be
can it be because the port FFXIV uses is around 55k ? or is it because the packet seems like P2P communication ? or some other reason ?
anyway he is gonna roundhouse kick his ISP today :P
I love being able to run out of AoE spells before the are casted, cause my ISP is so fast! And then just run back into it as it's being casted to be inside for when it hits, cause I'm just that good that I don't take damage : D!
All the while I keep casting my Black Mage amazing damage spells that do all this damage just because we can't cast 'em while moving... Oh wait! we can! But!
Oh gawd, I am just so good.
I take advantage of this while healing to heal and dodge simultaneously all the time. We should re-frame the lag complaint into a balance one - maybe it'll get attention then! Can they still tell us to zoom our camera out to fix balance issues?
What we need to do is commence the cries of "NERF!" You are just too powerful!
<~ SSA.
This is a flawed argument.
Even when you use battleping, you're still going through the ISP.
It's too complicated to explain here but, all you're actually doing is proxying from your connection to battleping, through your ISP.
Is it faster sometimes? Yes...But, you're DNS remains the same...Even if it's a rotating DNS, it's the same.
I don't quite understand how some of you are thinking that you change your source destination VIA your ISP when, it's there all along...This is why proxying is flawed.
Yes, you can change a few hops in your connection to the game and get an improved result but, ISP throttling? Not remotely likely.
ISP throttling would be a violation of federal law per the FCC's Net Neutrality Act considering they're choosing to throttle a very specific entity...
I'll just lag away from the nerf =O!
And Yoshi's reply will be: "In order to fix some balancing issues that caused players to be able to cast while moving, we have removed camera distance adjustment, now camera distance will always be set at its max. Please understand, we are doing this for your own good (silly players)."
It's more QoS over throttling. They can't set max limits on specific ports/protocols/routes, but they can specify data has higher priority over other data. If that link gets saturated, anything tagged for lower priority is going to start dropping packets. That is why a lot of VPN services use port 443 (HTTPS), and by the very nature of the encrypted data, it makes it impossible to tag it for a QoS bucket.
Most national/major ISPs don't implement any QoS, but peering circuits might, and those you can get around with a VPN (since it will change your route).
The fact that VPNs have such a major impact on this issue actually tells me the issue is either QoS of the FFXIV protocol, or something to do with the layer 3 GRE tunnel that might get your individual packets to the server in a more steady fashion (nagle algorithms, etc).
I believe most uplink providers prioritize http/https traffic pretty high (since this is the majority of internet traffic), so maybe that is all it is. A VPN causes your FFXIV session to get high priority on routers using QoS.
Granted, SE needs to fix their protocol/architecture so that it can work with connections that are not running at 100% (like most other games).
I'm still not sure how you guys are able to cast while moving lol. My spell bar immediately halts when I move period it wont even go past 00.01 when Im already moving. o.o
Ok so the threads kinda long and I only read the first 10 pages but i get the gist of things. x,x I play from hawaii and i get the same lag/latency whatever you call it that hits you from 50 ft away lol. All other games are ok its only XIV. Titan came to the point where i basically had to memorize its move and yeah like some tards' point out, PRE-determine, and PREget-your-arse-moving before it even shows the skill, nvm you dont know which way the skill is coming from. It was very frustrating for me having pple tell me "oh this is how you move, you gotta keep on moving like this to avoid it"
and im thinking...
'hell no?'
Why run a marathon when i am suppose to be dodging this thing by just moving an inch? Thats stupid.
So at this point i started looking up on the net how to reduce my latency. Turns out not much can be done unless i move myself to the mainland states. aka west coast. Retarded.
I then looked into latency programs that help my connection. I decided to try one out, one that i had used before in XIV1.0 but stopped because it didnt let me play another game. Amazingly it worked for me. I no longer needed to dodge like those blind mofo's that use to tell me to run. I dodged like how i wanted to, staying still, move and inch, and im still alive.
You can probably look stuff up like that on google but for anyone who wants to know PM me on guildworks from our website link below. I cant say its going to be the same for everyone though but for me and some others it was worth it.
I have downed titan, but by god was it a grind, I had to memorize his entire move set and rotation to know how to dodge and even then sometimes spikes would fuck me over, sqaure need to fix this delay issue, if you are out of a plume on your screen you should be out, fuck cast time, if thats an issue fix the fact plumes detonate on a delay, only hit me when I look like I should be hit
Sure just send a capture card to my address and i'll be glad to upload, stream it, and play netflix at the same time while running around and not having my spells come out. Considering I can watch Netflix on my PC, and run Dungeons with no lag.
Only time I start lagging? When 2 people are on netflix* and some extra computers hop on the connection. Then I start to get a bit of lag. Seems like everyone just has slow connections. I've seen stuff like this in peer2peer connection style games.
Not sure what you need a capture card for, or what netflix has anything to do with anything.
No one is saying you are lagging from your connection. The game has a built in 300ms movement update delay. This is why you can start moving before a spell is finished casting...and still get the cast off.
Because I play on PS3 =].
And Streaming usually causes your connection to suffer so... It has a lot to do with it o.o. I mean it takes a whole lot for me to see any lag in game. I remember the AoE issues in beta. But after they said it was fixed well. It was fixed for me and I never had a problem since with it. I have no idea what problems you guys are experiencing. I've seen people lag in game but I can visually see you guys get hit, move a second after and then die.
This is very similar activity i've seen in peer to peer games. A faster connection to the server can usually see the slower ones. I have no idea why it's like this in FF 14. But I know I've never dealt with lag from the server itself.
You can call me a liar or what have you. I experience no lag at all from the server. It seems a lot of the people lagging tend to live in EU, makes sense to me. I live on the East coast of America so I'm not far from the data center at all.
Edit: Out of posts for today! But yeah I did the test and it just wont cast lol. My games behavior is far closer to what the post below this one has said. If I'm moving my spell just says interrupted over and over. it doesn't even start counting and when I start moving my spells just stop going. Trust me I was FATE'ing on Thm and my spells do not cast at all if I move period. Even at the 0.03 second mark they just don't cast. I literally have to stand there or my spell wont go off. Sounds like you guys have it a bit better than me when it comes to casting spells.
I don't think people really understands how the lag works. Here's a super easy test to determine how lagged or not that doesn't depend on skill at all.
1. Autorun on
2. Hit your mount chocobo hotkey (1.0s)
3. Take note of when the spell is actually interrupted and note the remaining time.
4. Repeat this a few times.
I usually have 0.3 to 0.1 remaining, so it takes 0.7 to 0.9 before the spell is interrupted. This gives you a rough idea of what kind of lag you have, since you cannot actually cast a spell running but it took that long for the 'interrupted' message to show up. If you have 'no lag whatsoever', you shouldn't even be able to start casting your spell, and it should definitely be interrupted way before it passes 0.9s remaining, as that is the standard behavior from every MMORPG other than FF14.
I'm not saying you are lagging, or having issues... but go jump on your PS3 and try this:
start casting a spell and when you get to 0.3s or so left to cast...start moving. If there is no delay anywhere you should break the cast right?
Do that a few times, and let us know how many times you are able to complete the cast.
I think he's just playing.
S-E said they check the position every 0.3 sec.
Even if he has 0 ms latency, the chance of the position check to be done in 0.01 sec is 3.33333%.
And everyone knows he doesn't have 0 ms latency.
Edit: After seeing his other posts, I think he's serious.
