TESO the biggest rival for ARR?

lol. I have been looking at other games to play while waiting for ARR but they almost all put me off since it seems very hard to have really attractive characters. I did look at playing Skyrim but after looking at a few gameplay videos I decided against it for this very reason. I think FFXIV have ruined other games for me.

Just curious, since I haven't been following TESO news, like at all, did they say anything new about hosing in that MMO? Cause, in one of the first interviews about it they were all like "There'll be no housing cause it's difficult to implement it in a MMO" which made me go WTF seriously?!

Personally, I think that with ARR we're getting a game from a group of people that NOW know the dos-and-donts of making an mmo. TESO group will be making their first mmo in a relatively flooded market.... while I am a big Elder's Scrolls fan, going to play wait-and-see with TESO. I really don't want to play a mmo that goes F2P in 6 months.
And sorry to the F2P fans, but I'm a firm believer that F2P = Riffraff

Why? It actually isn't an easy system to implement in a meaningful manner, which is why people overly excited for it in ARR will ultimately be disappointed. This is why for example Yoshi used DQX's as an example, because it's very simplistic.

I think even the ARR group is still far away from knowing the dos-and-donts. Nobody know what gonna happen to ARR when its released like nobody knows what gonna happen to TESO. There is just one big difference and it is that it will be way harder to get ppl to play ARR then TESO cause of the Reputation. SE will never be able to 100% get rid off the damage 1.0 release has done and it will take time to prove that ARR is another game and is worth playing.

Personally i think that TESO will take most of the players that arent fans of FF or Elder Scrolls in EU/NA and ARR those in Asia.

We gotta wait how both games are (nobody has even played a beta of TESO or ARR) so all those statements about the gameplay are just bullshit from ppl that try to be smart but actually have no idea about what they are talking.

And don't forget FFXIV had to go f2p allready once to avoid shutdown and only could lure ppl to pay with legacy campaign and relounch of the game. This can happen a 2nd time too cause you never know what gonna happen in 6-12 months.

i played 1.0 beta, hated it.
i started playing again last year, for umbral era quests. it was ok.
im looking forward to ARR.
unless you dont know about ARR, or got other games you're hyped about, there's no reason why majority of people interested in FF in general, wouldn't wanna check it out. It's completely re-made game, there's no reason to bitch about 1.0 now, or how it failed. Servers are forever shut down; that in itself should make people happy, and check ARR out.
So don't be so skeptical.
i know they fixed all the issues i had with 1.0 already. And i know everything else they do, can only make things better, so i aint worried. It might not be the hit people might have wanted/expected from FFXIV before Beta, but i think it will do well.

My opinion of TESO is without Dragons like Skyrim, I'm not interested! Love the elder scrolls series. But it got HUGELY popular because of Skyrim (And Dragons). :D Can you tell I love dragons? hehe

Anyway, I don't think so. I mean FFXIV had Bahamut from the get go. TESO as far as I know won't have Dragon's at all. Heck it's not even supposed to be in the Skyrim Universe. It's completely separate. There will be references to it and it's Lore, but the world will be completely separate and new in the Elder Scrolls series. For that reason I'm not quite as interested in TESO without the dragons. I'm here for XIV!

I actually kind of hope TESO is more popular, and ARR is just a really nice game that has a niche market like FFXI did. In fact, I hope ARR pulls customers away from FFXI. The community isn't perfect, but I'd prefer it infinitely more over the mainstream MMO crowd.

Besides, FFXI did great without being the most played MMO.

I still think TESo will disappoint. It might be a great game on it's own. But the bethesda style games just doesn't translate well to the persistant MMO space. Your personal choices will only matter in your personal instance. Whats the point of playing it online, with thousands of other people if your choices have no impact on the world you're playing in? To me if defeats the purpose of playing an elder scroll game.

It's like the "game altering" choices that were hyped in SWtor. no matter what you do, the ultimate outcome is the same
It's the same with GW2 dynamic events. They are on respawn timers, and the outcome it ultimately the same.

This goes against the very essence of what bethesda created with the previous elder scrolls.

This is why i think TESo will be a disappointment.

The only way I can see TESo securing fans of the previous incarnations of the series is if they build a pure sandbox MMO. But they are making it a theme park

I hope the elder scrolls is a success on its own, I do. I just don't think fans of morrowwind, oblivion and skyrim will not find the same appeal after the initial buzz, after the newness wears off.

I have my fingers crossed for a Fall out MMO, thats a sandbox. Now that is a game that would be hard to put down.

I never cared for the Elder Scrolls games, so it doesn't really do anything for me. I'm a console RPGer at heart.

I'm looking forward to TESO. I've been put off the ES series since Oblivion, but the trailers released so far show some really great new concepts for an MMO.

I love FFXIV and will be playing it to pieces, but I do feel that the dev team here are playing a lot of 'catch-up'. Examples: "notification of item sold at auction sound to be implemented", "movable NPC dialog", "map markers" are a few recent dev posts - I wish I could be taking these kind of things for granted and instead be betting hyped for some brand new concepts for an MMO (like Free Company Airships, a CCG, a full AH/MW user API for websites to name a few possibilities)

So yeah, will definitely give TESO a shot, but I'm an FFXIV fan at heart so it's not going to pull me away for more than a few hours a week.

There are four posts on the larger fan-site's board (no official boards like us lucky folk!) that mention FFXIV. I watched the TESO cut scene...I'm just disappointed...
for a game company that big, they can do much better job. they have good action movement, but it's all flat and dull if you look for details, such as the face, clothes... at all the action fight, camera shake so much, you can't see anything...

The CGI trailer for TESO is nice and all, but... meh. The gameplay talk-to-the-dev video is even more meh. Some screens make the game look straight out of skyrim (the only ES game I've played at length, I'll admit), but other screens make it look like WoW and Fable had a child.

I'll stick with XIV.

the creepy design has always been there but just like every thing else that gets put on consoles the world design took a nose dive oblivion and onwards.

I tried Morrowind and Oblivion. Skyrim is the only one I've actually enjoyed, which is probably because they didn't use that godawful Gamebryo engine.

The problem is I don't care at all for the Elder Scrolls universe. It's grand and, frankly, amazing in its scope, but it doesn't grab me in the slightest. I wish them luck, especially as a few Onions want to play it, but I won't be touching it. Someone told me that the game is really pushing to be an RPG first, MMO second, which just strikes me as the same mistake SW:TOR made.

We'll see I suppose. I'll be too busy fishing in New Limsa to care :D.

The fault wasn't in the engine, after all, other games that used the engine didn't have the issues ES 3 and 4 had.
The problem was the companies poor understanding of action based game play. Still, I prefer morrowind. More original setting, more varied quests, spellcrafting with flair. Shivering isles for Oblivion was pretty cool too.

You know what impressed me about the trailer?

I didn't even realize this was a TES game until I saw the White Gold tower in the background. If I had watched the trailer without knowing what I was in for, I would have thought it another generic fantasy game featuring three generic fantasy characters instead of the iconic TES warrior/rogue/mage triumvirate.

This is not a good sign.

I don't even know where you got this information from. ESO is not a mod of any sort. It's a standalone MMO being made by Zenimax Online Studios, a sister company to Bethesda (both being owned by Zenimax Media).

They in fact do have official boards. They're temporary boards, yes, and for some unimaginable reason not linked to on the main site, but yes there are official boards. They're using the Bethesda boards for the time being.


As much as I'm looking forward to ARR (and I dearly, dearly want it to be a huge success), I'm majorly following ESO right now and I'm telling you guys, the game is going to be a smash.

It's being lead by two guys who were the front men for very successful MMOs (Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot), and their team is comprised of people who have both played and worked on MMOs before.

If you're interested in learning more about the game, here's a link to all of the video interviews/podcasts done up to this point. Again, not trying to take away from ARR's glory, as FF is very near and dear to me. ESO is not going to be some F2P in 6 months flop, though, you can be sure of that.

Ironically, no. Those two are the current leaders. Matt Firor (lead producer for ESO) was the lead director for Dark Age of Camelot back when it was new. Paul Sage (Creative Director) worked on UO.

Yoshida has mentioned a few times he is a big fan of DAoC. There are points in TESO I think it looks pretty, and other points it looks 5 years old. I feel its due to some oddly shaped models and inconsistent aesthetics - it was in Aion too, some zones looked so.. so.. bad. lol

Still, I think people should give it a little more credit then "genric crap fest" - its being designed by not so generic people lol

FFXIV: ARR has competition from basically every up and coming game due solely to the fact that they all seem to offer more progressive features. But I'm sure there's still a market for FFXIV: ARR. TESO has both jump AND dodge, so FF fans would have an aneurism trying to grapple with both those concepts at the same time. Therefore it will have its own niche demographic. I think that's all SE are really aiming for anyway. They aren't exactly trying to be "the next best thing" they're just trying to be a good thing. Their ambition and self-assuredness was basically curbed when FFXIV originally failed and as long as they get some share of the market, they may be happy enough with that, supposing it's sill enough to support the game.

It is difficult, unless you just implement it in an instance like ARR. Few games really have or have had persistent, meaningful housing features. Instanced housing is the easy option, but just removes players out of the MMO gameworld and puts them in instances, which isn't a good thing.

To be honest, I've yet to play a MMO with anything really elaborate when it comes to housing. Perhaps I've just missed playing such MMOs. So far all had instanced housing, with simple mechanic, but still enough freedom for customization to make it a neat enjoyable pastime. I suppose it just depends what people are expecting it to be. . . .

I'd love nothing more than a Harvest Moon style type of housing, but well aware it'd be extremely difficult to implement something as complex in a MMO. Was actually referring to one of those early interviews where they said TESO won't be having any, even the simplest housing feature (which I sort of view as something that perhaps should be, in one way or another, a standard feature in MMOs today - small or big in volume, purely for vanity or have practical use).

Personally quite fine with instanced housing, the way ARR intends to do it. Apart from having duplicates of the same instance, it's effectively still is a separately loaded zone which "divides" the players, to put it that way.

Glad to hear. As said, haven't been following news about TESO and that was just stuck in my head since the early interviews which I found extremely odd and bit disheartening cause ever since Daggerfall I loved having that option in my TES games.

Thanks a lot Balbanes! I do hope that each game will feed off the other's innovation to create a better experience for players and I'm glad that most posters here don't see this as a FFXIV v TESO discussion, but will most likely be players of both games.

I have a feeling that Yoshi-P has a few as-yet-to-be-disclosed secrets up his sleeve though!

I usually give up an Elder Scrolls game after several hours out of pure annoyance that the character models and animations seem entirely out of place.. The world always looks incredible, but the characters feel like they've been designed by a completely different studio .. I'm aware that a lot of people love the Elder Scroll character models/animations though, so it might just be I'm too picky.

That said, Elder Scrolls Online is basically done by a different studio, so I expect the modelling and animation to be different as well (plus that they can't go all out on the details). I also love DAoC and played it a LOT, so I'm quite interesting to see what ESO is going to be like. If it's getting PvP/RvR like in DAoC, I'll definitely play it, but I'm doubtful it will because most current MMO players expect rewards for everything they do, so there'll be little to no PvP/RvR for the sake of PvP/RvR...


That said, I'm a FF fan, so I'll definitely be playing ARR (as long as I can get myself to stop playing FFXI around the time ARR releases ;))

nobody's going to care how many people you had on launch, if you can hold at least 100000 people after 3 months then you've pretty much succeeded.

I feel like it's going to turn out a lot like The Old Republic, people are going to mass flock to TESO because it's that IP, but will get bored of it and move on. What does it mean for ARR? Possibly a slow relaunch with people gradually coming in over the first months.

HELL NO. XD Most people think their models are crap, they have gotten better actually since Fallout but they are still not all that great. This is why the Eldescrolls has the strongest modding community I've ever seen for games, you mod those models and those animations to your little heart's desire.

That's the real strength of those games something the online version will not have, so it remains to be seen how that will work out. Considering they still don't have any closeups of any of their characters yet it's pretty worrisome... :o

I've never played a TES game for its character models and animations. They suck.

Just like the above poster says.. horrible lol. I thank modders for improving character models and animations to a point. But you just dont play TES for that - you arent picky, its bad lol.

Possibly.. but TESO may suck also. It's too early to tell. I signed up for the beta, but I plan on playing FFXIV regardless.
