Why must chocobos be our companions

Given my distaste for the new mounts system - that is, the apparent lack of restraint and/or taste in what'll be available (Ahrimann? Red XIII? Seriously?!) - I'm extremely glad that the chocobo companion system will encourage people to favour the iconic birds.

Besides, if they made the companion system open to the other creatures, it'd only result in their having to remove a lot of the deeper elements, else every new type of companion'd necessitate new barding models, new layers to the breeding system, more balancing work, probably new AI work...

I have to agree with this. Who the heck ever told them to make chocobos our battle allies? Where did this idea come from and why are they making it a main feature? These white mage and black mage armors for chocobos look awful and corny. Waste of resources.

So if you group up, and everyone has a chocobo, half your team is chocobos? Who the heck asked for this? Who told them to do this?

It worked in say, FFT, where you control an entire team, and you can pick to have no chocobos or many chocobos, however many you want. And even then, in FFT you can get different monsters on your team.

They eventually need to expand this so that you can have different companions be they pets or npc characters. Or make this exclusive to a beastmaster job or something.

Chocobos aren't native to Eorzea but they've been established in Eorzea. Not only that, but they're also an iconic reoccurring theme in the Final Fantasy franchise. Ronso, Viera and bangaa have only existed in the Ivalice Alliance. They're established in the Ivalice Alliance, and only there. It wouldn't be legit at all.

EDIT: Ronso are only Spira, I was thinking of Seeq. Same shit applies.

Typhoon has existed in FF6, 7, and that shitty Unlimited anime. He was also set to make an appearance in Type-0 and was a DLC battle in FFXIII-2. He's a reoccuring enemy/summon. Magitek is fanservice, yes, but to a much lesser degree than say fucking Red XIII. Magitek exists in Eorzea/Garlemald.

I believe the eight man party size limit still stands. They've confirmed chocobo will take up a party slot, so it'll be an either/or thing. The companion chocobo will, by the looks of it, generally be something you call on to fill empty spaces, not have an entire party of players and their chocobo.

They've already implied that there will be different kinds of sidekicks as well.

4) Does every feature in the game have to be specifically asked for by somebody? Are they not allowed to come up with their own ideas for content?

It will be interesting however to see if they place any limitations on your chocobos use in battle like they did path companions making it so your solo adventure wasn't always turned into a AI duo.

It just seems like, whenever I'm alone, I will HAVE to have my chocobo out. Maybe that isn't the kind of character I want to play, but now it will always be more efficient to have a pet with me. And for a long time, it will be a big ass chocobo following me around. I think this will also make other pet classes seem awkward.

I think it looks awful. Worse than dressing up dogs in human clothing. Chocobos are big unwieldy beasts. As for it being concept art, FFXIV has pretty much executed their concept art to the T so far.

For many things in this game the dev team often asks the community if they want it to check before they implement it. For example they ask us what to do with the combat system, what races to add, what jobs they should add next. Then out of nowhere we have chocobos dressed up in black mage gear. The art direction for FFXIV was totally classy and impeccably designed, now lately it's being filled with goofy crap.

It's totally subjective what gameplay elements people consider important. What about people who were excited about chocobos in combat? This wasn't just announced yesterday, it was announced when 2.0 was FIRST ANNOUNCED. Those people wouldn't be happy to have you asking them to "divert resources" from it. Also, the FFXIV team is huge. Different people are working on different things. They clearly have plenty of resources to go around if they rebuilt both client and server from ground up while also simultaneously updating the old version and did it all in less than a year.

Many is not all. I for one am happy that the dev team is capable of thinking for themselves and doesn't follow every idea brought up on these forums to the letter.

Finally, again, looks are subjective. I don't think it looks "awful," but we also need to keep in mind that concept art doesn't translate 100% into what you see in the game. Often it varies greatly, especially in cases like this where the actual art style of the game is quite a bit different than the style employed by the concept artist.

Dude. You ride them. They are pretty big. If they are outfitted for war, give them armor, they don't need white mage robes. They have never had white mage robes except in maybe some chibi styled spin off game or a plushie doll.

As for concept art, since you seem to have just skipped over that part of what I said, I will reiterate that FFXIV implements concept art very closely into the game. Garuda, looks just like concept art. Behemoth concept art we saw looks just like in the trailer. Buildings in concept art implemented just like in the game. I think I would rather base my critique off of what they actually show us then the off chance that "hey maybe it will actually be different...stop complaining"

We're not going to he baving chocobos following us around 24/7. Even if there were zero limits on its use, their usefulness is already limited by when and where chocobos can be called.

You can't call them in towns
You can't call them in cavern areas
You can't call them in instanced raids (though instances in outdoor locations you can)
You can't call them on other transportation
yada yada yada.

I don't expect this to change just because chocobos will be able to fight.

Beyond that... We all like certain contents more than others- that doesn't entitle any one of us to demand that they don't invest time in content that this person likes but that person doesn't. There's plenty enough content to go around for everyone.

I think the problem here, for me at least, is that in the past I've seen chocobo battling with cutesy armors but they were already really cute. While chocobos are not "ugly" in FFXIV they are not "super duper cute" either .

Perhaps if they make the armor less cute (realistic) to match the chocobo, or the chocobo more fluffy cute to match the armor it will work out better. We havent see the combat animations either but those would also follow in the same logic for me.

The barding we have now leans to the more realistic side.

Show me an instance where FFXIV concept art turned out drastically differently from in game. Especially the ones they feel like showing off, they've been implemented cleanly into the game. This "it's just concept art" argument is meaningless stalling.

So basically I can't use them in an instance raid to fill a slot when my group is sitting at 7/8
But I should however have them follow me around everywhere (except caverns) when I'm soloing or else gimp myself.

Yeah I guess you don't keep up but they did confirm that they will add a companion like your path companion. They actually said they would be able to fight with you and you would be able to change there equipment... just that it wouldn't be there right at ARR launch.

IMO, I say put the chocobo companion to the side, along with market wards & PvP. Establish a good foundation for the game before throwing so many novel ideas into the game. It's good the development team is brainstorming, but the fact is the game needed more depth and these do not add depth, they are surface-level ideas.

The game needs depth, this is what those who know Final Fantasy are looking for. Tossing old FF elements won't cut it, then it will become Final Fantasy Universe - a game in which FF elements are tossed together. It won't have a serious look to it. This is more time spent on novel ideas that don't add to the game, and could detract from the game.

People want to play FF as a world with depth...

We want to go into the leaning tower, look through the windows, have the sun hit our faces, hear the cracking of old broken glass under our feet, see the aged dust on the concrete... This is depth.

We see this image all the time, but look how badass the front character looks.. Does that not make you want to play a paladin? Not this under developed tank class we have now.. That whm looks like she's about to put up a forcefield or stop something from happening.. it's dynamic! We want our character's to have impact on the world... Isn't this what we get from playing console FF games?

This thread is 11-12 pages long of argument & counter argument regarding chocobo companions, mounts, etc. Will this probably have any impact on the game's development? Probably Not, it's just our way of venting our ideas & getting validation by the forum community. So I've read these 11 pages of discussion & realized that IMO (In my own personal opinion) this is fluff & let's face it Version 1.xx has not lived upto expectations & this is FACT. So the most logical thing is to correct what's wrong and THEN build on that. OKay so I think this discussion will never really go anywhere & it's a sidetrack to what's really important.. whats the core of Final Fantasy? What makes Final Fantasy.. Final Fantasy? Is it chocobo mounts? is it chocobo companions? Is it storyline? Is it the characters? Why did Ver 1.xx fail??

Therefore, I posted what I did, with pictures for emphasis. Does everyone have to think the way I do, certainly not, but this garbage about sheaths, grass, behemoth looking chocobo, hand-held chocobo raising devices,etc.. I mean really? I've played this game for 1 month and I can tell you there are WAY more important issues. As an "outsider," personally I find this community very weird overall.. and that's just my opinion.

Stalling? What am I stalling from? Your retorts make no sense. I didn't discuss the degree of difference- In this particular case, the concept art has something of a comical look to it. Do you see anything in the actual game you could describe that way? The basic gist of it may be the same, but it may become grittier/tough as it evolves. Concept art also evolves with multiple iterations most of the time. HOw much of a difference you can expect depends on how early the art is.

It doesn't seem backward to me. They're sidekicks, not party fillers. I'm guessing you don't like henchmen and mercenaries in any game because that's what they do in every MMO. Also, I said "even if there are no other restrictions-" There probably will be, for instance if the Chocobo/merc/pet/whatever is KOd you most likely won't be able to just call it again right then and there, because that would be broken. There is probably a cooldown between calls, yada yada. It's a "bonus" to have when you can have it, not a "gimp" to take away from you when you're without it. It's basically no different than having the rested EXP bonus versus not having it. You can be negative and look at it as being gimped when you dont have the bonus or be positive and look at it as the bonus that it is.

I wouldn't. You couldn't call chocobos in the same kinds of places in XI and they didn't appear in those kinds of places in other games, the sole exception being the Chocobo's Dungeon games.

I honestly really don't care that much whether you like the content or not. What i don't like is you acting like your opinion deserves priority and that the devs should scrap stuff just because your personal tastes don't agree with it. The fact is, some people don't like it and some people do. Why should content be cut from the game when there ARE people that are interested in it?

"What is final fantasy" is subjective. Why 1.x failed is partially subjective (though there are glaringly obvious issues). Chocobos in combat is not likely intended as some kind of solution to a 1.x problem. It's just an idea somebody came up with some day that the design team thought was a good idea so they told the engineers to make it happen. Nothing more or less than that.

That being said, there is precedent for chocobos in combat and thus precedent for a feature like this being a part of "Final Fantasy." You can't really argue that it's "Not final fantasy" or takes away from it being that.

There is a psychological aspect to this.. we're dealing with humans there is always psychology involved.

Anyway, the point is, there really is no point in us arguing, I've decided my views & you've decided your views & they aren't going to change because they stem from the common ground that brought us here.. Of course it is. But I fail to see how this feature in any way detracts from that. Not every feature added to the game is going have a direct concrete relation to the story and how it unfolds- But that also doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. While your explanation goes deeper than that, people are most certainly being overly judging over concept art that doesn't even tell us how the feature plays or anything else about it other than a vague idea of what a chocobo in a certain situation might look like.

All I ask at this point is you consider how chocobos look right now. I don't think there's any question in my mind that they fit in just fine. I think the people against this are just looking at the concept art and going "oh, that will suck just because it doesn't look the way I want it to."

Of course it is. But I fail to see how this feature in any way detracts from that. Not every feature added to the game is going have a direct concrete relation to the story and how it unfolds- But that also doesn't mean it shouldn't be there.

Ties into my post regarding "putting it to the side."

It's not soley the look, but the concept, which is what many of the posters are saying. You have to collectively analyze things on the whole, not in partition.

RudyFails... I have no idea (@_@) I haven't even seen all the chocobo job concept art, maybe someone can post it so we can see or link it...

IMO, I say put the chocobo companion to the side...

The game needs depth, this is what those who know Final Fantasy are looking for. Tossing old FF elements won't cut it, then it will become Final Fantasy Universe - a game in which FF elements are tossed together. It won't have a serious look to it. This is more time spent on novel ideas that don't add to the game, and could detract from the game.

I totally agree but knowing SE, they have a department for that and many others. You can't say they're not working on it based of concept art and plans for battle companions(basically for solo-players).

Final Fantasy was and still is known for it's in-dept quest systems and story/lore(which addition to character creation). FF1 is the only one in the series that didn't have character creation. You were as a group and you saved the world,period.

In-dept stories and quest need to return. Quest as we now it are dull and fast-track. Missions are non-existent while we loose out-selves in the plot(which consist of no twist at all). We're not diving into an ocean of plot points, quest with-in quest for progression to unlock a bigger picture. It's like a shallow pond that only expands in width and not depth.

I play on in hope SE will reflect on this feedback and do something about it. I'm not asking for more & more quest, I'm asking for a single quest with meaning and something to look forward to(besides a crystal tower).

Fair. But it seems people are acting as if these companions will be comparable to a PC. I honestly can't see them making that much of impact. But hell, like you guys said, we just don't know.

Forget the new players for a minute... how about the current playerbase? The "loyal" players.. new players may come along, sample the game and move on. There is less guarantee that a new player will stay versus a loyal player who is more willing to put up with flaws. Therefore, fix what's broken 1st before you add on.

There is a lot of information in the dark or unconfirmed by a lot of "we'll consider that." So Yes there is a possibility things may not be as devoted to issues as we may want. The latency is being addressed w/ new data centers.. awesome! But what of the other issues/concerns. We're still in the dark & they haven't said okay we're fixing A,B,C,D problems w/ a proposed method. For example, a lot of ppl have an issue with the market wards, yet they haven't proposed what'll happen with them to improve it.
