I stopped playing ranked because the matchmaking was better in non ranked. I don't want them to merge them to get the shitty matchmaking back. I'm all for the better matchmaking, but please, leave us one mode that we can enjoy.

Casual doesn't have matchmaking whatsoever. It's either stomp, or get stomped. I find those types of games neither fun, or competitive personally. Obviously I want changes to be made to the existing ranked matchmaker as well, assuming they don't throw 2 player premade parties into the game mode to destabilize it even more.
I'm sorry it absolutely does. It tries to balance games out by separating certain players.
I have played countless games at times when there are mostly inexperienced players in queue and one other player that is experienced. The game will never match you together unless some other experienced player joins the queue. I have seen that happen over and over again after more than 2000 casual wins.
And no, it's not because we are playing the same job, I switch jobs every win lol. There is no bias, it happened tens of times in a row, several times. If it was a 50% chance to be matched with someone every game, it would basically be statically impossible.
There is genuinely zero matchmaking in casual aside from ensuring that melee/ranged/healer/tank balances are equal... It's called casual for a reason, it's more likely a run of bad luck if anything. If it were different then I'd expect to have differing experiences, on different characters which I personally do not notice, and I am a person with 15+ alts high enough to run PvP, with varying ranked Crystal conflict ranks, and overall matches between them.
No idea about the true intricacies of the algorithm behind, but even in casual I've had truly baffling matchmakings, not further than yesterday, 1 Tank, 1 melee DPS, 3 ranged DPS, versus 2 Tanks, 2 melee DPS, 1 ranged DPS... I've also seen other combinations where one team could have definitely spared a healer or melee so that both teams would have an equal amount on both sides, but alas...
Honestly, I am not 100% sure how the algorithm works, but it’s there. I thought your ranked rank might affect the casual matchmaking so I lowered mine on purpose (skipped ranked seasons) to see if it would affect the matchmaking, as I seem to be mostly matched with very very underperforming players in Casual games. It didn’t do anything as I kept getting very bad teammates and losing more than I should, given how I perform in these games (which I have several screenshots of).
I suspect it’s the very high number of wins that is the issue, but I understand that getting paired a lot with bad teammates is not the greatest proof there is. But it got so bad that I hopped back into ranked where I win a lot more than in casuals, which is why I don’t want ranked to go lol.
It’s much easier to prove there is a Casual algorithm by focusing on specific players on the enemy team. I know a lot of the Aether PVP community from Discord, Twitch, Frontlines and CC experience and being part of linkshells with great PVP players. I have seen so many times someone I know be on the enemy team dozens of times in a row. That would be like a 0.00001% chance of it happening a bunch of times. There is a particular black mage on Aether that plays very well and plays a TON of casuals and I don’t think I have ever played with them in hundreds of games. That would probably be a 0.000000000001% chance of happening if it was truly random.
So, no, I don’t want ranked to go. I want it to grow because it’s where I get the best games with truly random teammates.
for clarification, i can say 'you're wrong cuz you're wrong' because i i lived through the situation that was brought up in that thread while he tried to prove me wrong.
I know what i saw :) feast andies got all the goodies.
For every item on the wolfmark itemshop we got per expac
They got like 1 or two per patch which either way you slice it, they are still getting more because they are getting updated like every patch/halfpatch and all of the gear armors they got look like devs actually put time into them while we got what i can only assume are reskins of something that are already in game (probably dungeon gear)
EDIT: yeah just checked and about half of the wolfmark vendor (which i don't really check as much anymore)
only has mostly reskins of stuff that was already in game, Pack/packliege (arguably the same thing) is where things picked up for us even if it was a drop in the bucket compared to what feast andies got.
I don't disagree with that take, the ranked feast sets are something I envy, and I wish I were able to get. Wolf mark sets however... They're quite possibly some of the worst looking sets in the game, aside from a few weapons, and Late allagan gear. They may as well have not been put into the game. Of course now they put no effort into any of the sets they've released in EW besides the Archfiend set, and very debatably the False Monarchy gear.
The reskin issue seems to be a bigger problem with the game as a whole if you ask me, considering how lazy they've been with not only PvP gear, but sets in general with 6.XX patches, and even 5.XX patch gear. Bad recolors, sets that dye in horrible ways, ect. I leave that issue for the glamour addicts and miqote players to rant about, however.
I wish the PvP andies could get their points across without making themselves look insecure and either toxic, or bitter. Their commonly rude attitudes make them insufferable to engage with.
I've seen weird makeups in casual during off hours for PvP, I suspect just to get matches going when there aren't enough people queued up.
We'd need to do some serious data collection if we want to prove or disprove that there is a casual algorithim in action. I do lots of PvP on Primal and I don't really notice fighting against, or with specific people more often than not, aside from instances where they're playing the same role as me.
i like the false monarchy i use it on my paladin
Look, I want to apologize. I was quite rude with my posts or bitter/heated as you describe it well. And I will admit, the quality and frequency of the set releases have been a bit odd, but that also is relative to the time period they released in. If you would humble me...
For example the Beast Lord series (like Behemoth King/Queen) and the Twelve Deity series are Heavensward sets, the quality of course are a bit hit or miss. But for the time, that was great. The Feast sets that came out in the same period were the Lonewolf/Packwolf and Eaglebeak/Eaglewing(?) sets, which in retrospect don't look as crazy and actually more in line with what released then.
Pre Heavensward, the other sets are considerably less desirable, but a lot of things from ARR looked horribly basic, it was a different time and budget. Feast Ranked didn't exist back then though.
Stormblood is where I definitely see fault, releasing only a single Wolfmark series of armour, which was another asian-themed series in the expansion with three or more asian themed sets across the board from PvE. Maybe they thought the Garo series coming in late HW was enough with it, but I disagree. This was also when they really started putting some effort in their armour design for Feast ranked, starting with Season 5 Hellhound Armour. I can definitely see why people were mad / envious, quite honestly armour design in Stormblood was... bland. It was either primarily asian themed (Genji, Dai-Ryumyaku, Rakshasa, Genyo) or futuristic/tech themed (Lost Allagan, Scaevan, Omega).
Outliers were the semi-medieval Diamond series and the middle eastern Ala Mhigan gear - two of three crafted sets were recolours of Alliance sets from World of Darkness and Void Ark respectively. I will argue, arguably the worst gear design period - overemphasis on specific themes while leaving some rather popular armour sets in Feast. This was also pre-Medical Kit era Feast, which was far more punishing / difficult for newbies to pick up due to Healer stress, so this did not help.
In Shadowbringers they sort of balanced out gear designs from raid, wolfmarks and crafted and was fairly varied. It was also when they reduced the armour rewards from ranked down to the Shadowstalker armour and Shadowcrawler recolour, the rest being exclusively mounts. Garo took a leave though which was sad but we got the Republican and Late Allagan series - albeit without weapons.
And from Endwalker onward, you know how it went - 6.1 rework, Virtu / Prestige recolours for currency, some unique weapons for currency, Battle Passes and essentially nothing for Ranked apart from the one-and-done Ranked borders, which couldn't even be utilised outside of Crystalline Conflict / Adventurer Plate until a later date.
Now, info collection aside, I am genuinely happy for an improvement for Casual rewards and certain things being (more easily) available to the Casual PvP playerbase, regardless what other individuals will claim about me. Arguably in the far more accessible 6.1+ PvP, this is fairly important and I hope they not only keep it up but improve it, maybe make certain things more engaging like making Rival Wings slightly more incentivised so things don't go stale between CC and FL. Or at least giving it a chance to return a 2-man queue option like before CC so friends can play together.
In fact, as I stated many times over prior, I'd be perfectly fine if Feast rewards WERE reintroduced, meeting at least one of the following:
- marking the original items per Datacenter with a #1-100 in the name
- changing the item quality of the original to blue/purple
- calling the returning items "replica" (dyeing still fully available)
- giving the originals an option to have an armour glow maybe?
- if nothing else make them accessible via Ranked, but not necessarily top 100 (see Commendation Crystals they recently introduced).
All I am asking is that people have some understanding that present day ranked has basically no actual incentive beyond playing for Crystal border or some of the Top 100 border for a season at most. We are nearing a full expansion of this dynamic, half the time I was on copium being like "surely they can't just copy paste the same reward over and over".
I fully understand people being envious. I wish everyone to have a good chance at things they want and get it, but at this point I am at least asking people to not look at me like a human pile of scum for simply voicing my concerns with their design decision to the current reward dynamic which went from underfeeding Casuals and giving a bit too much to Ranked to Casuals getting basically everything and Ranked gets arguably a participation price.
And once again I am sorry if I am getting aggressive to other forum members over this, but having to keep on reading "delete ranked" or "never give ranked anything ever again" ad nauseam while there are people who genuinely just want Ranked to coexist and have purpose other than matchmaking, surely you can understand why I am pissed. Noone ever said "never give casual pvp anything ever again" before even at the height of Stormblood Ranked having ALL the good shit. We wanted people to try the mode and get into it, but terrible design decisions about how it worked back then did nothing to help on this.
So at very least if we just cannot see eye to eye how we see things about reward dynamics, can we at least - and I apologise collectively for anything I have said to you Archeron and also Towa - agree to not attack each other calling each other "pvp andies", "toxic casuals" or other crap and instead just verbally advocate for what we currently stand for? I don't believe we genuinely mean ill for the other side, we are literally just bitter about what we lost or don't get.
(and massive apology for this wall of text)
I don't disagree that ranked shouldn't have its unique rewards either. I think they do deserve something that sets them apart from the rest for their skills - Which is sorely lacking, as are most rewards introduced in 6.XX. Augmented hellhound weapons are a bad, out of season april fools joke compared to previous feast rewards. The rewards for both Ranked, and casual need to be appealing for people to want to grind. I feel that both sides seem to forget that they should not be fighting each other when we essentially have the same goals, but in traditional forum fashion the threads constantly get derailed.
The common thing that drives us all to do ranked PvP is to get sexy looking gear that impresses people with how sweaty we were to farm it out. Straight up re-releasing that gear would be a direct insult to that achievement, in the same way Ultimate players feel insulted when people get carried, and run around with their ultimate weapons, and titles they put no effort into. I have played many a MMORPG where my hundreds of hours of progress were made meaningless with an easy to accquire re-release of those rewards. Meanwhile casual PvPers have nothing to spend their crystals on, and for sometimes valid reasons choose to avoid ranked. There is nothing for them either. All of us have the season pass rewards, even people who don't care about PvP. But I leave the complaining and adjustments that I want to the crystal shop thread.
I have no ill will to anyone on these forums, and I apologise for calling you a PvP andy. I merely seek to clean these forums up, and remove the toxic attitudes and forum drama that have plagued this place and turned it into one of the worst places for discussions on FFXIV, even below Twitter, and Reddit, and even discord at times. Unfortunately as you have seen in pretty much Every single thread It is quite an undertaking to discourage that behaviour, or to make people understand that a disagreement is not a personal insult.
Gonna be honest chief, im sorry for being such a Nob to you since alot of my anger was from being constantly being defamed and essentially being told my opinion is less then others because X,Y and
The constant feeling of being shoved between a rock and a hard place all the while having game devs/suits that always are playing to the JP crowd instead of giving a single lick about us.... gets to you after awhile
I snapped and i apologize that i used you as a punching bag.
I'm back from vacation and decided to get some fun in ranked games. Estimated waiting time is 30 minutes at my data center. Even for no rank/bronze. Wellp.
What I take issue is oddities that mathematically should not happen, aka a team with 2+ more healers/tanks/melees than the other (or the other way around, a team with 2+ more ranged DPS than the other). The algorithm seems for the most part usually to split those equally, minus one when there is an odd amount of them for the whole game, but mathematically if you get X ranged DPS for the whole pool queued for a game, then X divided by 2 should never have more than one discrepancy per team, yet it does happen, and it annoys me.
To be fair, making them available only at Diamond+ is kind of a gut punch for many. I was genuinely hoping when they announced such currency that it would be like Wolf Collars, reaching down to Bronze so even a consistent Bronze player could see an Augmentation item after multiple seasons.
This may be a reach but chances are we are getting such peanut improvements from the JP playerbase being generally active in PvP Ranked regardless and mayhaps they are also apathetic to the reward structure - which tends to prompt no or minimal response by japanese gamedevs if their "core user base" isn't asking for things.
I may also be talking out of my ass right now, I don't know. Just a guess. Anyone here proficient in japanese or know how to translate it and see how their PvP forum looks like?
I've already agreed that it should be more in line with the way golden weapons were handled in OW so as to allow anyone to get them eventually.
It would not be surprising if that was the case. They handled many game breaking issues the same way in XI. The NA players would complain perpetually upon finding it then eventually it would hamper a JP group and suddenly it needs to be addressed.
You could ask that guy who accused you and the rest of the top 100 across all seasons of win trading/minion-ing. He was livin' life over there for a hot minute.
If you have played with any of the player base you know this isn't true. It's always jump in even though I'm rusty or unready or forgot my keybinds/job playstyle. If there was no need to warm up then why does each and every player do it prior to entering their respective game including, by the way, pro gamers?
We've already hashed that out over and over. Pretty much everyone without exception can agree the rewards in most of FFXIV suck and need an adjustment. PVP just shines brighter than most of the content in this respect. Feeling challenged and stressed are not the same. The issues with ranked being "Role Agnostic", as your favorite forum member coined it, is that they aren't in fact. Yes, it is possible to win with any combo versus any combo but not when the player skill is dead even. And since sometimes you get pooped on with all "Support DPS" vs BLM WHM WAR DRG NIN or similar uphill battles You can't ever really say it's a reasonably fair fight. This season's match making in particular has been atrocious. You will get a team where three players barely register as warm bodies and just continue to get those same people over and over again. In the end everything that can be counted wrong with CC in general and even FL can be attributed to a lack of understanding, moderation, or motivation to continue to iterate in a reasonable manner to move the game modes toward a better state of being. Adding rewards can certainly garner more activity but if you're basically just playing the lottery and praying to hit it big, you're throwing your money away or in this case time. Seasons one through three it would not have been unreasonable for anyone to get to crystal because it was just about playing your best and putting in reps. The sorting was set up to keeps you close to 50/50. I would love to see the win percentage info because there are people capping 500 and up wins and bouncing between diamond 2 and platinum 4. But hey we can't see that because it might hurt someone's feelings.
1. i have played with enough people to know that casual and ranked are literally the same thing, you REALLY don't need a warmup for something that is literally 10% you and 90% rng based
2. Yeah we did hash that out and im glad we are on the same page regarding this for the most part.
Especially when in casual matches you are against current crystals and diamonds, who is warming up and die like flies if you have a good team.
True. It doesn't matter if you're have the same people on your team three times in a row. Personally, I don't care about rank and just wander from mode to mode. The only difference for me is that in a ranked game, the wait is prohibitively long to get a set of the same people.
If shifting dev resources is that important they should just dumpster Ultimate first followed by Savage and Criterions.
Savage is a core PVE experience with Ultimate being an extension of those, I wouldn't consider cutting resources from these.
Criterion it is too early for me to tell, but so far it is too little for me to care. Deep dungeon though... can't say I am a fan of Eureka Orthos. We essentially gave up a largescale raid zone akin to Bozja in favour of Deep Dungeon, Criterion and relics tied entirely to Tomestones. So far it is the least engaging expansion if you aren't into Island Sanctuary for instance.
PvP is arguably my only saving grace this expansion, god bless 6.1 PvP. I usually believe, that allocating dev resources to improving PvP would not take away from PvE and is simply on a different budget, but I am struggling to uphold that belief.
Cutting resources 100%? no. shifting SOME... yeah i can get behind that but tbf the New savage dungeon (lets just call it what it is) is easily a miss for me, i wish they would put more resources behind what was already made at the time.
More bozja would be cool af
An exploration zone or hell a Lv90 continuation of Bozja content (would be a crazy but welcome idea) would have done a lot for engagement. In fact a continuation of such a subsystem would be bloody amazing, all the gear and tools you collected serving extra purpose in the future would have me very happy.
Would also justify the final "to be continued" screen after Zadnor story.
Man I miss Bozja, went over my resources channel and saw all the good stuff.
Oh man, it just shows how people's tastes differ. Bozja and Eureka were such a grinding chore for me.
My comment was probably kinda excessive, I think one of the good things about this game is the wide variety of content, yet it's kinda painful when they have to decide between if they have X or Y for the expansion.
Ideally they would have separate teams for each larger part of content so they could provide a bit of everything consistently, but that's probably not going to happen.
Personally I would love the game to have more stuff like PvP and Mahjong to have something I can consistently enjoy when there's lull in other content, kind of evergreen stuff that is less one and done.
Imagine if they ever went back and actually reworked Chocobo racing into much more responsive and enjoyable game mode? Expanded Triple Triad to make it less "mini"game? Made cooperative stuff to do on Islands? And so on.
Then again unless they are heavily reworking the engine and codebase, they will be limited by people who have experience with it along with the major delay in responsiveness. Of course there's also the matter of how much resources SQEX is willing to spend in XIV instead of milking it to fund other games.
I already get the feeling that the developers are greedy for rewards. Well, if they made remakes of the old PvP reward sets, people would be happy. Or... Here somewhere they expressed an idea, I don’t remember who expressed it, about accumulative tokens for improving reward weapons, starting from bronze and above. And this idea sounds very good. Because if someone decides to play loto and makes significant efforts, then the reward should be better, otherwise there is simply no point. Other than running from some players to another in the hope that the other mode will be more dynamic and fun.
