Having played FFXI since launch and was pretty hardcore had everything done in the game, fulls sets of salvage gear pretty much the best gear from kings.
I thought Abyssea was the best thing to happen to FFXI. It made exping fast got rid of the tediousness of it. New level cap to progress your jobs. Actual new gear that wasn't sidegrades but actual upgrades. AF3 didn't take that long to get 8 seal drops and 6 +2 drops. Took a good amount a work but not that much. Proc system further increased drop rates. Having actual upgrades and finally our old gear becoming obsolete was definitely needed after using like the same gear for over 5 years. Empyrean and Relic weapons became very assessable if you want to put in a good amount of work you can get one.
Gear in abyssea that doesn't take forever to get is much preferred over 1% drop rate just like salvage, and kings that spawn every 24 hours or 3 to 7 days.
Which lead to voidwatch which came after abyssea and pretty much everyone agreed was pretty bad 1% drop rates and very sidegradeish. People seem to hate VW and Abyssea was very much well received.
SE should take what they learned from Abyssea and apply it to FFXIV make it so that gear doesn't have absurdly low drop rate it makes people want to play more and have a fun time when they are constantly getting item drops. But Tanaka said in an interview he thought that abyssea was a mistake and they wouldn't be doing something like that again so yea now we got VW with 1% drop rates on side grade items.
@ Zumi was Abyssea Tanaka's idea ?
I was under the impression that he was busy with making FFXIV when abyssea's came out which make me wonder who was in charge of Abyssea's when it was first released.
Sounds to me Tanaka is just set in his ways and wants things to go back to the way they were, makes me glad hes not producer for this game.
Abyssea wasn't Tanaka's idea he wasn't in charge of directing FFXI when it came out. When he did start to focus more on FFXI after leaving FFXIV Then we got Voidwatch and back to the old 1% drop rates where stuff almost never drops.
FFXI is a shell of it's former self.
I lost my account before the cap increase and I'm glad that I never started playing again. Those who like Abysea and whatnot...all the power to you but I want my game to last me more than a few weeks before I'm capped out on all jobs with some of the best gear the game has to offer lulzing my way past monsters that used to strike fear into my heart.
Yes yes, FFXI's not what it used to be, but it's not Abyssea that killed it--it's time. People may not remember, but at the time Abyssea came out there were rumors that FFXI would either stop development or shut down entirely. Abyssea, however, brought back a lot of people who were tired of sidegrade crap and the hell of abysmal drop rates combined with horrifically long lockout periods. It was likely only due to people coming back for Abyssea that FFXI's still around today.
Even without Abyssea, though, to basically copy and paste all the features from FFXI would be to focus too much on a very narrow portion of the MMO market. We've seen this countless times before across different media and it never works: pandering to the fanbase just kills you off slowly as fans grow old and lose interest while not being replaced by younger fans. It's basically what's happened to SE as a whole. They started making fanservice spinoffs and portable games instead of really focusing their efforts on strong new and continuin IP on the consoles, and now they're in real trouble after being a powerhouse only a few years ago.
FFXIV needs to be a game for today, not a game for 10 years ago with updated graphics. That means bringing it up to the modern standard (which FFXI definitely is not) and then implementing good new ideas as well also co opting good ideas from other games as they come along. That's how a successful MMO works, always staying on top of what people as a whole want, not just the most hardcore of the hardcore players.
OJtheLIONKing talks a lot of sense.
Since some people dont like it when someone ask for something related to XI, if I say I want to see Cloud in this game (especially in the Colosseum) am I going to be told to go back to VII?
I would also love to see the futbol game that X had.
Id also like Zidane race to be included from IX.
OOOOH and some FF music, classics from every game!
ok from reading this post from the guy who dont remeber ffxi much i would say failed. It not the fact this game will be like ffxi but somewhat close to it and yeah ffxi isnt ffxi anymore it more like ffxi+iii=ffxiv lol. the new add on pretty destroy ffxi. Alot ppl cant go back to ffxi anymore b/c they trade in their ffxi account for ffxiv failed account if SE would return my account on ffxi i would total bail out on this.
I dont know about you guys but FFXI was simply to this day best mmorpg I've ever played and I can safely say I've played quite a few. I quit pre-abyssea ofc...so I say "I want my FFXI-2!"
EDIT: Just played about 12 hours worth of Champions online and its lame indeed. I have no idea whats going on still and I don't remember anything I've done up to where I've gotten. Something about some aliens and a jailbreak is all thats stood out.
FFXI is referenced so often because it was the most successful Online MMP game of its day (pre-Abyssea). Ppl didnt just try it for a couple months...most references you see are people playing for 4, 5, 6 years. To reference SE's success w/ FFXI is ok. To compare an utter failure that FFXIV has been to a very successful FFXI is a good thing because people obviously want this game to succeed and morph into something that will compare to the fun they had in FFXI. SE knows what they had in FFXI and the money they made over the years.
Come on, each time FFXIV comes out with something new...it is conquered fairly quickly. They are trying to keep the hook baited while also working on 2.0. I am typically one of the white knights in my thinking, but FFXIV desparately needs a good role model and there is nothing really to use other than FFXI :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSRIaZBsv5k I see your logic.
well as someone that only played xi for a very short time because i hated the game i can even say this argument is very flawed. the people that played for years look at xi as it was in its original form and not what it has become. i'm sure if you started a new game that was the exact same as the original one was alot of those players would return, but to say if you like xi then go play it just will not work.
the game xi is now is not the same game as they played and had the fond memories of.
Indeed, the FFXI I have fond memories of is exploring a vast world with areas that tell it's own little stories (I bet most people didn't know those 'Weapon' mobs are actually called Kobolds, which is why they didn't exist in the past during the Crystal War era, they're earth spirits that formed a physical body to "wield" the weapons of fallen soldiers, thus why they hang around the spine.)
Meeting new people, partying for many hours (even grinding was fun when you were with fun people or people who knew how to play)...doing the massive storyline with actual Cutscenes..not "Omg here's a box of text that means nothing no go kill 5 boars, bitch!"
End-game events that actually felt like something different...not just a hole in the wall with a boss like most MMOs.
Working my ass off to get to:

If you've played FFXI during these days, you'd know the feeling you got when you first set foot into these 2 locations and heard the beautiful music.
This is what FFXIV should have captured and more and yes that means building off of what FFXI has done and making it better, not throwing it away like they originally did, just to appeal to people who like generic MMORPGs -.-
FFXIV is already a step away from being FFXI if you havent noticed. but things are hell of alot more accessable. and nothing is wrong with adding the good from ffxi to ffxiv. unless you want less stuff to do they should just stop working on 2.0 and say well here you go.
they need stff LIKE FFXI's sky and sea where you need a little bit of work to get to and finsh. right now its like wow where its linear and can be beat in 25mins?
It's still a few steps away from being like XI, once it recaptures the "adventure" atmosphere and actually get rid of powerleveling (as in actually partying and DOING stuff in a party is the best way to progress) then it's "like XI"..a real RPG. It is getting there, which is a good thing, but I've honestly never played another MMO that gave me the same feeling of accomplishment that XI did, and despite what people who hate the game says, it's not because it was "hard", it was because you actually had to work for your rewards, as I exampled above getting to Sky and Sea was a challenge, a great storyline and you actually had to work with people to get something done.
Not like single player RPGs posing as MMOs today.
Both Sky and Sea came with expansions.
There is still time for FFXIV to have similar zones, Crystal Tower is a step in the right direction, im sure they have plenty more cool things planned in the future.
I agree that something otherworldly like Sea/Promyvion would be cool also.
I'm waiting for you to say "back in my day !!"
We have been over the whole old school MMO thing before, players in todays market don't want time sinks they want fun, yes I agree that FFXI did give you a sense of accomplishment but that doesn't fit in with what people want from an MMO these days.
Sadly you are in a small minority of players that want hardcore gaming and time sinks to make them feel good about themselves.
I would say on these forums there is a 50/50 split but these forums don't account for everyone who plays nor the masses of people who may play once the game becomes good.
I agree that the game could do with being a little more difficult and content that requires more skill to complete, but I sure as hell don't' want it to be as much hard work as FF11, that game was like having a second job.
OP is posting biased personal opinions without any experience on the topics that he mentions. He is not credible and will not be taken seriously. Give me pre-abyssea FFXI-2. I'll pay $15 a month for that.
FFXI has already been ruined. There's just no going back to that game. However, SE can still make FFXIV into FFXI-2 without actually making it FFXI-2. I don't want Sky+Sea. I don't want Vanadiel. I want Eorzea and Eorzea's version of areas such as sky and sea. Give me an area that's challenging to get to. Give me an ambition in the game. So far, the only "accomplishments" in the game are getting your classes to 50 and beating a few hole-in-the-wall, easy enter, instanced dungeons with pups for bosses. This is not enjoyable and does not make me ambitious.
I agree with Dubont
This is what I'm talking about. The premise of work and effort to reach said areas, not the fact it came from expansions, but what you had to do and progress in order to do it, something hugely missing from MMOs of today.
They do want fun, they can play offline games for that, I'm not even talking about "back in my day" I'm talking about what MMORPGs are supposed to be...and only someone who never played MMOs before would seriously think an online single player game is what an MMORPG is supposed to be.Quote:

It's funny how you get defensive when you say I consider you one of the people who hate FFXI, yet here you are the main one talking shit about someone, every time.Quote:

It felt like a second job if you let it. Pretty much every MMO before they dumbed it down felt like a second job, why? You actually had to dedicate time and effort to get what you wanted.Quote:

Why do people get so testy when they read something like:
Trying to remain objective here, I read:
We need more party based content, not just 10 min dungeon "runs", but actual content.
Scrub the "let's get a 50 to PL us while we watch TV cause we don't wanna work for levels." crap.
Make some actual quest/storyline that leads up to accessing those "EG" areas, something you can't get thru in 20 mins.
XIV like too many other MMOs are lacking in that middle "M" aspects, rewarding solo play over partying.
Look I said all that w/o refrencing XI, I could have mentioned half a dozen games that fit too well into this "new age" mold but I left those out too.
I wasn't being defensive or rude or aggressive, however you are, I wonder why.
Yea I don't want a second job, if that's all the same.Quote:

MMO's have evolved the way they have for a reason, you can blame it on WoW or you can be realistic and realise that the masses do not want to be tied to a game 4-5 hours every evening to make any kind of progress.
If people want to play a "single player game" online then so be it, who are you to tell them otherwise.
Here I was being nice towards one of your posts and see how I'm repaid lol XD
I wish we were on the same server elexia ; ;
Well I didn't mean it like that.
But if we are being realistic epeen does play a big roll in these types of games.
It's not much different in how you see casuals and how they ruining your precious game, which was never intended for hardcore old school players to begin with.
I do wish Elexia was on my server, anyways... as for Rolkien? I dunno.
What you have to understand is that a lot of the potential FFXIV players are FFXI vets. Most of these people want a game similar to XI in that they want challenging, full scale content that requires a good deal of effort to get to and complete.
I, personally, do not like the whole dungeon idea. I want things like: Gather pop totems for the gods that cause a king of gods to pop in a certain area.
Or, Uldah has been overrun with Emperial forces, repel them (actual enemies please. None of this caravan crap.)
Hmm...other ideas.......Ah, open world areas that require playing through a chain of quests and acquiring story to actually get to. I joined "market" FFXIV 2 days after it was released due to the server constantly being down on release. When I got in, one of the first things I did was run to every area possible and get all of the teleports. I shouldn't be able to do this. There should be areas that I can't get to without fulfilling certain requirements (and no SE, I don't consider current level to be a requirement)
I can appreciate that, I'm an Ex FF11 player also, I'm just trying to keep an open mind and not be stuck in the past.
I totally agree that this game is missing quest chains, but with the way every resource is being funneled into 2.0 the main story has been put on hold til then, Yoshida said that he plans to pick up the story from the last mission at lvl 46 (hopefully it will require party based combat and not be solo orientated)
I think the job quests were a good example of what to expect, if you do them at the correct level they are quite challenging, aren't completed in a day and require a party in most cases.
What we are missing in this game and have said this several times in level caps, if all the job content had level caps then it would have been a lot more challenging.
Can you imagine the crashes we would get with such a scenario ? (don't' worry I'm being sarcastic)Quote:
Or, Uldah has been overrun with Emperial forces, repel them (actual enemies please. None of this caravan crap.)
"I wasn't being rude or aggressive"...lol. As I said before, FFXIV was designed for the casual market so I don't see how this fits with what my perception of the game being ruined? You don't even know what my perception is beyond that SE failed to recapture something they've did in the past with Two MMORPGS, both successful and FFXIV ending up being a mess when they could have easily avoided it.
That's my perception.
Actually, server crashes would be a thing for content such as that, but I feel that is something SE needs to work on. At the same time, though, I would absolutely LOVE to see something such as the Uldah raid mentioned above.
Imagine: Everyone relaxing in uldah, suddenly, a horn blows and Uldah NPCs start running to their rooms while the Uldah guards ready their weapons. Empire forces begin flooding into the city in waves. The first wave is small, probably levels 30-40. The second wave is slightly larger, with levels around 35-45 with siege weapons. The third wave could consist of levels 50-55. The 4th wave could consist of levels 55-60 enemies, with siege weapons and a "boss" at the end of the wave who has the ability to summon "reinforcements" to aid him as he attempts to control the city.
This would, of course, require the ability to make alliances with other parties, but something like this is what I want to see.
Well I'm hoping that Halmet defence is kind of like this, waves of enemies but mainly based on the level of the hamlet so that all levels can be involved.
I agree that it would be cool to see this done in Ul'dah similar to besiged but yea they would need to fix Ul'dah first, I used to love fighting in Windurst-S also so something like that would be good as well.
They are planning front lines in the future as well which looks interesting, It's just a matter of time and patience and these things will come.
