you are correct, but then the cap will have been raised, and new content will be out. Everyone will be on equal footing.
One thing I know if this ever happen to NA Servers, I'll stop playing. I started this game at 2.4, crawled my way up learning how to play the game. I spend 2 months like a beggar making itens in the streets of Ul'Dah. Now this? Someone can just buy their way up to lv.50 with money? I'm not against someone being allowed to jump Realm Reborn story, but make them level up their characters from level 1 like everyone fairly did. I can see a wave of garbage players who don't know how to tank or heal properly, and old players will pay for it. The reason I choose FFXIV over other MMOs was because it was fair to everyone, no cash shop for advantages. Its good I heard about this so I'll delay my purchase of Stormblood just see what will happen.
With the expansion, one should be made free. Even without the expansion tbh.
Done in such a way as to allow choice. Choose a Jump Job or a Jump story line or some other, cosmetic option. Future potions can be purchased. This doesn't seem like a full on cash grab and allows those who are determined to not use them agift as well.
That's the thing WoW is not only WoD or Legion. 10 years full worth of content getting skipped cause of bad design practices. When ARR launched Yoshi said they wanted to fix past mistakes. And they fixing them. HW is much more concise experience with not a lot of Fat. For that reason idm skipping ARR all together. But they should go back and fix ARR questline. Make most of the quests optional and boost the exp gain. The 46-50 pain is real.
Who is Gaius? who is Cid? who is Louisoix? who is Iceheart? Who is Haurchefant? I paid $60 to skip all the story.
Why everyone assume that everyone and their mother will buy these potions?
Has the team considered how being able to level alts so quickly would affect the specialist system?
Powerleveling your crafters is relatively easy provided you have the gil, and now with the hurdles of reaching Idyllshire (or whatever the next hub city happens to be) removed, it'll just become commonplace for players to create alts for other specialists.
Mind you, that already happens even today. Content skip potions will just make it easier.
I am beyond excited for this! Also to all the doomsayers:

I like it and I'm gonna buy it!
Jump potions will be a good and timely addition to the game. It would be cool if there was also a tutorial of some sort to familiarize new players with their class at level 60, but regardless I'm glad they're being added. I'm looking forward to friends being able to catch up to all of us at endgame without spending months working through the 2.0 story.
The bulk of player who fill out the lower level duties are people using the Leveling Roulette. The Jump potions won't change this much. It won't make the game unplayable. The problem with levelling is and will continue to be how long it takes to grind through all the MSQ.
As for resources, the Jump potions already exist in the Chinese and Korean markets so the actual resources to implement these are relatively minor on their own and a far more permanent solution. Any streamlining with only help for one expansion before the length becomes a problem again.
That said I think resources should be implemented on support for things like Tutorials and story summary tools. However these features would be useful to all players so its not a complete loss of value to existing players.
I think there is an issue with the way their questing/unlocking/gating system works. When your dealing with elaborate programs changing small thing can require a surprising amount of actual work.
When I think about it further, I think people think that adding jump potions means that they won't also be working on making the story/leveling experience better. They're not just gonna implement the potions and call it a day, and anyone who swears that they will should probably back up their claim with more than just other claims.
Finally made a forum account just to comment on this.
I don't really mind the potions. Might even end up using one on an alt that's on a different server.
Though I would rather they actually fix the problems with progression in a different way instead of resorting to this.
This isn't P2W. You aren't winning anything. If you skip the story or leveling, you aren't going to be attempting Savage unless you're a very good player.
I know someone who can't even name all the Scions nor do they care to. They play to raid.
As others have mentioned, throw in a Hall of the Intermediate to help teach some of the more advanced elements of dungeon/boss fights (hopefully with an eye toward highlighting the importance of proper ability usage/rotations), and I have absolutely no problem with the implementation of jump potions as explained.
The point was calling it bad for business and the possible beginning of a decline seems a bit unfounded. The cash thing is just, shrugs. They made this game with business in mind, I just don't see the relevance in pointing that out for something like this. $30 for a moogle mount? Sure. Makes sense then.
I don't see many problems here...but as a subscriber since 2.0 hit...the ending of veterans rewards will hurt'em more than these potions will in sales.
To me the solution seems pretty simple just add the story skip potions and perhaps increase friendship/mentor exp till lv60. It would take less than a week to reach lv60 and you wouldn't have that storyline roadblock allowing you to unlock the new jobs at lv30 if SE follows heavenward path. And makes the unlock quests capped at lv30. No reason to add lv jump potions. If someone friend cannot spend a 2 hours a day for 7-10 days to help his friend lv to 60 perhaps your friend should consider whether this game is for him or if he's just going to be his buddy helper.
And again by not fixing the leveling expirience what is gonna happen is that skip potion is gonna be mandatory if you want 2 reach endgame requiring spending extra cash. That's a huge negative in my books. And because we are not WoW and you cant just LFR to level up and access endgame people who are not willing to spend the money in 1-2 years will just never play the game. The real solution is to streamline and fix the leveling experience making all cut scenes skippable but still force a progression via the MSQ.
I believe when they announced that they said they do have plans to implement a new rewards system.
My guess since the issue raised with the old system was it made the more recent rewards further and further out of reach for newer players even if they are loyal, is they will implement some kind of veteran currency system where you earn a veteran currency as you stay subs that you can turn in for veteran rewards. Of course that's is just a guess.
Making someone go through the story will not make them much better than they would have been with a jump potion. The MSQ teaches nothing about how to play your job. Bad players come from a mentality of it being ok to do the minimum required amount of effort to clear something. Story doesn't change that, Hall of the Novice teaches more than the entire story does, the only thing people learn from is themselves, and other players. The content is simply not punishing enough and the minimum bar to pass is very, very low.
People who don't care will continue to not care, if they cared they'd reach out for help. The skip doesn't change this.
