How do you feel about them talking about divided servers?

Unless they plan on having real local servers that'd serve to reduce ping and the sort thereof, non-global/regional servers are useless. As stated a plenty times, the reason there are different worlds is NOT due to design, but due to hardware/software/fiscal limitations.

I discovered in ffxi, how enlightening it is to be able to communicate in game with players who's language I do not share. I would like for this feature to remain. One of the many things that makes ff mmo's unique is the international communication enabled through the auto-translate feature.

I try my best to be polite to everyone in game, regardless of their location in real life. Though I have been fortunate enough to not have a run in with a rude or impolite player from EU or Japan, I could never classify a whole nation by the actions of a few.

personally I think there is no point in having segregated servers if they are all still in Japan. You will still have latency issues, and the tools are there to communicate well enough with those that speak another language, I will not be moving to another server. Mysidia is great and so far most everyone gets along and I have yet to see any anti NM/EU/JP issues.

Personally I am for divided servers if that means they are opening up some servers stateside. If that is the case then you will no longer ping Lodestone and FFXIV at 200+ MS. Though I guess it would be nice if they had the option of certain name servers being that way and others being normal.

SE said that we will have the choice between global and localized servers. So who cares in the end? Everyone gets to pick what they like the most.

IDC about them giving people an option. To be honest thats fine by me. I never had issues with communication in XI with Japanese players. The auto-translate always worked fine. However, just like any person, I did run into the rude ones every so often, the {Japanese} {Party} {Yes,please!} /kick me and husband from party. For me on Gilgamesh and Lev, that was very very few times.

However, because of those few times, my husband really started to get irritated with the Japanese community, so if the option comes along to stay on a diversified server or a US/EU server only, for his sake, we will most likely go to a server where it is regionalized.

TBH, the japanese players I partied with in XI, were always very efficient when it came to grouping up and knowing their jobs. I really enjoyed partying with them, sometimes better than some of the English players I would play with. Many of them had a sense of loyalty, and once they came to know you and your play style, it seemed like we would get picked by the same person(s) if they were on many many times because we could party effciently. *shrugs* That's just my two gil.

People are saying regional servers will alliveate the laguage barrier, but it will not, if we think in NA, we have US, where people speak english mostly, Canada alot of which speak french, and if anyone plays in Mexico what about the Spanish speakers there.

In Europe, we speak English, Spanish, German, French, and any other languages spoken, Asia is the same, but I'm not too sure who player over there apart from Japan.

Regeional servers arent one for each country it for the continent usually so the only benefit is the lower latency, which is only a problem in FFXIV because of thier servers which they know and is why they are changing them for 2.0.

Depends. Will the English only servers be located in the US, or will they all still be located in japan?

I would take cutting off the multicultural influence to have more people to play with on peak hours, and lower ping from more local servers.

As long as they gives us all the choice I see no problem with it, personally I would join/move to a Euro/UK server.

I don't dislike playing with Americans but the time zones mess things up for me when doing events and what not, dont' really care about playing with JP players, again nothing against it just not something that happens very often.

I can fully appreciate JP players not wantin to play with US/EU people more to do with communication than anything else.

Regional servers will also no doubt mean lanuage specific servers, it really depends on the population.

I want them, I played on one of the oldest FFXI servers that were very JP dominated for atleast the first year or so, let me tell you how that experience turned out when I was pioneering the endgame as one of the first NA LS's on an old jp server.

They held the HNM's all day so they would pop more favorable times for them.
They called us "Dirty Foreigner's that don't deserve to fight Fafnir" Despite never playing with them in the past.
They would attempt to MPK us with Roses, spiders when they didn't get claim on Nidhogg.
They would deny me and countless other people exp invites the moment we answered (yes, please) with autotranslator to an exp pt invite.

I remember one JP replying to me "(English) (Perfect Dodge)" his name was Gottfred and was in one of the upper tier JP ls's that had a bad rep for hating on NA's.

The few nice jp's I did play with were so few and far inbetween, I'm not going to throw all jp's under the bus because theres knuckleheads in all walks of life but if given the chance to play on an NA server only i'm taking it without question because my last experience wasent pleasant by any means. I don't think XIV suffers from this as much right now because the game is still in flux in mid reform.

This is just my own experience, theres no right or wrong but I don't want any of that playing into future encounters with people once the game starts flowing with people when we start getting closer to 2.0.

I agree that FF14 needs some BETTER servers to deal with a lot of lag and character placement issues (such as Ifrit's Eruption/Radiant Plume attacks still hitting people who have CLEARLY moved far away from them, or watching people somehow running up the sides of walls when loading new areas or getting hit by knockback moves), but not at the cost of dividing up the communities we already have. I don't know how many of you guys are familiar with the game Phantasy Star Universe, but if you are, then you probably know what I'm talking about. If not, then allow me to explain...

PSU came out in 2006, a few years after FF11, and it was also released on the exact same consoles - PC, PS2, and Xbox360. Thing was, not everyone could play together regardless of console like they could on FF11 (correct me if I'm wrong on that, I didn't play FF11 for very long); PC and PS2 shared one set of servers, while 360 had its own servers. On top of that, there were Japanese PC/PS2 servers and US/European PC/PS2 servers, while 360 was somehow able to accommodate ALL regions, including Japanese, but most Japanese players were on the PC/PS2 servers. And on top of that, the Japanese PC/PS2 servers eventually got to the point where they dropped support for the PS2, and their game updates came out MUCH faster and they got a year ahead of everyone else in terms of what game content was available to the players. Partially Sega's fault, partially Microsoft's fault, but what eventually happened was that the US/European PC/PS2 servers were eventually shut down due to the lack of population, and forced everyone who still wanted to play the game to jump ship to another set of servers, usually the Japanese ones. This meant buying a new game disc and possibly a 360 console, setting up a completely new account, starting their character data over from scratch, and/or having to learn Japanese to be able to even read the in-game text and menus. The 360 servers are still up to my knowledge (I think only because Microsoft wants them to be), but they're still way behind the Japanese PC servers content-wise, despite Sega constantly promising "oh sure, we'll get you new content that Japan has now that we can focus more on you and not the PC/PS2 players we kicked to the curb" and then saying "well the reason why we haven't caught you guys up to Japan is because your version of the game is just different." (original quote from Sega GM Edward here) Not to mention Sonic Team's horrible management of the game in general: bugged updates that caused server rollbacks and forced players to lose some of their progress, errors with the authentication servers that kept players from even logging in, constant reskinning of maps, weapons, and enemies, lack of GM involvement with in-game issues, etc...

The bottom line here is that I don't want to see FF14 end up like this, especially seeing how much effort has been put into trying to make it a good game despite not starting out well. And while I DO have a lot more faith in Square-Enix than I do with Sega, I'm still very wary, especially seeing how a lot of the newer FF games like 13 have taken steps backwards and disappointed me compared to older games like FF7, and I know that's not really a fair comparison (different developers/consoles, etc.), but still...

Let me put it to you this way on my server on FFXI all the NA HNMLS members were complete asses, MPKing for claim, treating all other LS's like inferior rubbish, Dynamis jacking etc etc, I could go on.

The fact is most HNMLS were elitests and complete assholes, I had been MPK'd and had dyna or limbus jacked many times by HNMLS, all they cared about was getting the best gear and using members, no one else mattered.

Its not a JP problem you are discussing, its a HNMLS problem and most of those come from Japan or NA, the Japanese are not a racist people in general, the ones I have seen have all been nice, also when I talked to a Japanese teacher (from Japan origanally) she was actually suprised about the JPonry mentality.

I think people could be suprised if they give us the choice of regional and global servers about how many JP stay, on the other hand they could think they are the only ones staying and because of language problems with NA and EU people they would change as well because they dont wanna be the only JP on the server.

Edit: wonder if Reinheart would be willing to make a post on the JP forums to see how many JP players would choose regional and global servers, just out of curiosity

This seems to be the general attitude of JP players. If it's even optional, possibly the vast majority of them will go to JP only servers, which would defeat the most of the purpose of having global servers in the first place. As far as Europeans...well, there were a lot of Europeans on my supposedly North American WoW server for instance, so that's not as big an issue.

There's no doubt the auto-translate needs work, but one of the things I really loved from FFXI and in this game is being able to play with and get along with JP players. The fact that I started learning Japanese in 2006 helped matters considerably.

I suppose it may have been for economic or pragmatic reasons originally, but I still like the statement behind the global servers in FFXI, that they wanted to foster a global community without barriers. I feel like we'll be taking a step backwards if we go to regional servers. In this case, it seems an all or nothing thing--compromising by allowing the choice will basically result in regional servers. I can understand that for communication reasons, but I think the pros of a global community outweigh the cons.

this is just a HORRIBLE idea. Let the search and content finder filter through language there is NO need to split servers and stunt population.

Agree'd that the majority of JP players will follow their friends and the new players will of course select the server than is dedicated to JP.

This doesn't bother me at all though, but for people who are hoping to stay in global servers they may not last very long if a trend is set.

I guess the way i feel is why bother giving an illusion of a global community, when both sides tend to segregate themselves anyway, when they can just make them language specific and make things easier as a whole as far as communication and what not is concerned. This has always been my feeling since XI days, and im glad people have been able to bridge the gap but unfortunately the majority do not.And not for any racist reasons just for convenience. I think an option to choose between seperate servers and a global server would please most people.

I simply disagree with you and possibly its a farce to you, but let me ask you a few questions. Do you purchase only NA gear, items, supplies? When you shout do you shout to NA only to do repairs or meldings? I have done countless of leves with japanese players back before alot of the changes. When new events come out open world you have all different types of stragglers NA/JP/EU doesn't matter that bind together for the sake of completion. Most of us have grown complacent in the fact that this game, albeit small, has a developed community. Nowadays you dont have to look too far outside your very own linkshell for things. It hasn't always been that way nor will it always be this way. If the playerbase grows and the content flows we'll see a completely new game with reinvigorated community action once more. Personally I live on HST and if I did play my peak primetime hours, which I very well may have to sooner than not, no one will be on.

Leaving aside issues of server population (which are present and very relevant), the fact that the servers are currently global does not impact your ability to communicate with people in your own language. What it does allow is for people who are willing to reach across those barriers to find help they may not have been able to find otherwise, maybe make new friends in a new part of the world, and cooperate.

Even if you don't, no one's forcing you to play with JP players or vice versa--prime time hours for your own region's group will stay the same whether the servers are global or not, but among other things you may have JP players buying your items on the AH while you sleep, which helps keep the economy on a nice even keel no matter when items are posted. This hasn't been the case in any of the MMOs I've played with regional servers.

As I mentioned before, though, making it optional will essentially be the same as forcing regional servers upon us, as that's what the JP playerbase wants. I suppose respecting their wishes is a valid route, but I think the game and community will be weaker for it.

You seem to think "multicultual" is meaning english speaking and Japanese speaking, when it means from all walks of life. I am in the UK, I play this game with people from Germany, US, Portugal, there was even somone who is origanally Korean but moved to US. The servers will not be segrigared by language to allow people to communicate better, they will segrigate by region, so they can have the US servers in America, the EU servers in London (probably) and the Japanese servers in Tokyo otherwise there is no point in distancing the community like that.

I also play DC universe and thier servers are based on region, whereas you can choose the US server or EU server if I played on the US server it would be almost dead because the US players are all in bed or at work when I play because of the time differance, this makes the game unplayable for people who play at odd times unless they choose the other server.

On DC universe guess what the first thing I saw was, some german chat, then some french chat, then some spanish on the EU server because there is NO reason to seperate by language because people in EU will still have terrible lag because the server will be in the US, we would only loose all the people in other parts of EU and JP.

And before people start saying they wont have servers around the world because of patches and money, all they need to do is have the patch 1 day later for the patch to be sent through a VPN to the other regions, and it would probably be cheaper after the server technicians have been trained to use the server side software for the game because they already have staff at the regional offices and could make staff at thier head office redundant because they arent needed, Also this will come with the 2.0 servers which SE dont even have except maybe a test server so they dont need to ship them over, just buy them in the regions.

I dont know i feel like the economy would work just fine if the servers went regional, they do in every other mmo. Granted the playerbase needs to increase first, so i guess if this doesnt reach widespread popularity like they want then seperate servers would be a bad idea. However regional servers would be very plausible and probably better if the game reaches good levels of popularity.

Since 2003 when ffxi launched in Na till present in xiv i have partied once with jp players. So no i never have specifically shouted for their help in anything. The only thing i will give u is that yes i probably have bought gear made by jp crafters, but like i said if this game gets the population it wants the economy wont be a problem. The one thing i do agree with though is that it would be bad for those who play at off peak hours, and i'll admit i really don't have an idea as for a solution other then them playing on the global servers. however as a poster said above it seems the JP playerbase wants seperate servers so i dont know :/

Changes to servers' physical locations are something they are merely considering for the future, not a part of the current plan. The present language-based server plans are.. presumably at least, for communication and the slight increase in playability might come from players lagging a little less dissimilarly to one another, but no less across the board. At the present moment, they are focusing on latency minimisation without moving the servers.

None of us know for sure what they plan to do, Yoshi-p asked us to do the iptest and then he would decide if regional servers would be a better option, there is more to consider than just language here.

There is no benefit to segregating language and keeping the servers in Japan, in fact I would say that only benefits Japanese players.

What looking at reducing latency without moving the servers means is checking router settings to make sure they are all load balacing properly, check they are using the most efficiant protocols, checking switch configuration and things they can do on the firewalls, also checking the actual servers to make sure they are using the best equpment and the servers are setup as efficiantly as possible. However they have seen that the physical servers aren't capable of much more network wise than they are doing, which is why they are moving to the 2.0 servers.

And as I said the 2.0 servers arent at SE yet so they will look in on the 2.0 test server they will have and open it to people in the regional offices to check the latency around the world, and if it is unacceptable they will have no choice to move them out of Japan if they use regional servers.

They should beable to get the latency down to atleast 0.2sec with the 2.0 servers and any changes they do with the networking equipment without any problem with the servers in Japan, if they are using up to date equipment it should go down more.

Fensfield there is two different latencies at work here.

One from your computer through a lot of ISP servers crossing the ocean hitting Japanese ISPs and then finally SE's server and then all the way back again. (nothing much can be done about this)

The other is the speed at which the servers process the data and from looking at the Ifrit fight its pretty high (possibly seconds) this is the biggest problem with out a doubt and this will be dealt with when they move to the new 2.0 servers.

However the 200-300 ms of network latency is still an issue when playing face paced encounters like Ifrit, I'll be ineterested to see how the moogle fights turns out.

Your quote from the interview with Yoshi-P was saying that they would look into reducing latency without moving the servers, I was just saying what they can do to reduce latency at thier end. However if they do choose regional servers, they may just decide that because the community wants regional servers in the region they are serving they may choose to put the 2.0 servers there especially if they need new networking hardware to reduce the latency for overseas users they may just put the buy the new servers in the region they are going to be based, so US servers bought in the US, EU servers bought in EU and JP servers bought in Japan, which could save them money, we dont have alot of information about thier systems except they are using new servers for 2.0, so this is a reasonable outcome if they decide on regional servers (no thanks).

We agree on the topic at hand which is good enough for me, and I know about this sort of thing so I thought I would throw a few ways they can look into reducing the latency from thier end incase anyone wanted to know.

This is true, and from what has been seen and from what players have said it seems to be more the latency at SE's end, rather than the path to the servers, the damage from Ifrit's eruption and plumes is done by your location on the servers which is why the players can be away from the danger area and still get damaged. I would expect the Japanese are seeing some of this as well because when I was fighting Ifrit last night I had a friend from Canada, one from Portugal and me seeing the same things when Canada and US is actually closer to the servers than EU, if the problem was the latency to the servers rather than the latency on SE's network if anything in Canada it should be easier to avoid eruption and plumes.

I would expect them to make the moogle fight less dependant on latency and just add different ways to make it more of a challange, but all things considered there isnt alot they can do with it because so much is dependant on latency, say moogle attacks every 2 seconds, but the latency is 3 seconds healers will really have a hard time because they are effectively missing a whole attack but as you said we will have to wait and see.

Personally I'm against divided servers. The fact that the servers weren't divided in FFXI made it so much more enjoyable and not just that, but educational as well.

Being able to interact with people from different cultures is a part of what made FFXI so memorable.

In regards to the stereotypes... well all I have to say, in my experience with the JP players in FFXI... I've met a total of two JP players that were nice to me but those experiences were worth dealing or in many cases, not dealing with JP players.
The JP players may think of themselves as more patient and less rude but I call BS on that. I think they're equal with the world in terms of rudeness, lack of patience, and the like as well as the reverse.

I mean I understand there are vast cultural differences between the U.S. and Japan, but no one side is better. I think it would be more beneficial to all of the players NA, JP, and EU alike to step out of their comfort zones and learn a little.

However, it seems that the JP's finally got their region specific servers (they've been wanting them since FFXI) and I'll respect that. Personally, I'll play on a global server and that's all there is to it.
