Dragoons are getting their Wyvern (not explicitly announced, Yoshi vid inside)

I don't see why they couldn't just implement a "pet based" Lancer that uses a wyvern as a pet. That would be the simplest way to make a pet based wyvern that would actually do something, it's not like they have to have the Dragoon have a wyvern why not just create a lore in which Lancers/Dragoons whom cast aside the armor of the Dragoon and seeked to tame the wyvern use them in their fight against the wyverns.

Could be rather fun, the first part of the quest could involve an instance where you go through a cavern and have to still a wyvern egg from the nest, and then take it back so a ritual can take place to imbue parental rights to the user. And then from that point on it woudl progress through the lore of these Dragon Tamers and the journey the adventurer and Dragon Tamer go through up to the point where maybe you are faced up to go against the true parent of the wyvern or something lol.

They couldn't implement it because pet management + melee positioning attention is usually too much player load in a game at this pacing.

I would see this being very easy to implement. DRG stays the same, but Lancer gets an alternate class that is like you said cast aside being a slayer of dragons and instead one who tames them. I've seen this done before, but they would likely need their own town or city to occupy where they could be away from Coerthas and it's subjugators in the Houses. I would see a jungle area working well for this for some reason.

When you mention that it brings up the point that while a wyvern pet attached to DRG wouldn't work like the FFXI one they could sort of make one work similar-ish to one if they made a wyvern companion with a branching leveling system similar to the current chocobo companion. Although I suppose that would still be pretty lame because you couldn't bring it to any real fights in the game. Or now that I think about it what would stop them from just making a system of wyverns similar to the egis? Different wyverns that fit different roles. Egis are only slight dps boosts anyways and honestly I don't see why they'd really have to nerf drg considering it's pretty much the weakest of the dps classes as it is.

Just pull dragoon off the board. Replace it with Thief. Bring back a real Dragoon with his Wyvern George in the future.

Probably we could bring you the pet Wyvern anytime in the near future if we wanted to, but at the same time if we want that Wyvern to have the ability to attack the enemies along with the Dragoon then that means we need to reduce the strength of the Dragoon itself because we need to make sure there’s a good balance in the party. So I’m sure that’s not what players want – they wouldn’t want us to reduce the strength that the Dragoon class has already. So as long as the Wyvern doesn’t have that kind of special power then I’m sure we could implement it, so sometime in the future maybe you will see the pet Wyvern. We do have some plans and when you see how the story evolves around Reborn it might make sense to you

Why do so many folks hate the idea of a wyvern so much? I can understand not wanting a pet class but c'mon folks, there are more ways to do things than the obvious.

As I see it it could do a few things.

Make Drg a pet class, bad idea all around, folks have already gotten comfortable with the heavy rotation/positioning melee class we have now.

Make it a vanity pet, not a good idea in my opinion. Would feel like a halfhearted attempt at fan service and folks don't usually keep minions out very much even if they like em.

Make it a two hour/limit break, better and if you went with real Wyrm better still lol. Oh, hello little light party dungeon boss. Say hello to my little friend and his very large megaflare.

What I would like to see is a few new abilities using a wyvern added with the next level increase. FFXI style healing/elemental breaths on a cooldown, debuffs, add a fourth hit to Drg's comboes that are a joint attack with the wyvern. Just don't have the Wyvern do anything not caused by a new ability, that way Drg keeps what it has and doesn't become a pet class. Just a class with an interesting animation for special attacks ^^

And don't start with lore arguments against it, the level 55 job quest could introduce wyverns in about three paragraphs without a problem. The Drgs job crystal already has the ability to dominate Dragons, not much of a streatch to allow a Drg to bond with a adolescent wyvern as if he/she where one of their own.

That "real" Dragoon you speak of belongs to only one game in a long series filled with Dragoons...

The real question is, from the perspective of those who actually play FFXIV Dragoons, can gameplay be made more fun for you through the addition of a pet? What extra niches would you like to be able to branch into? What extra CDs and CD coverage do you think would deepen or complement DRG's playstyle?

I can see it working. If done very, very well. I do not want to be micromanaging this pet while trying to be a general melee badass. Moreover, I don't want to suddenly fall far short of Monk's melee potential just because I'm lugging a pet with me. Have a "Dragon Soul" or whatever resource that both my (variable-cooldown) CDs and the Wyvern's can feed from, where each side of use builds up the other, whatever is needed to make its use strategic, rather than feeling like free auto-attacks and the occasional obligatory ability.
Additionally, the simultaneous compromise allows a player to basically play as if 'specialized' into a pet- or non-pet version of Dragoon however he or she pleases during the fight.

[Personally, unless I'm going to force it to tank for me (called down to intercept attacks on me while siphoning my enmity), I couldn't care less if the wyvern even had a health bar or an actual position; it could just as well be an animation clawing, tail-whipping, and biting off faces when sicked on something, and infrequently divebombing over lines of enemies opposite to my Doomspike spam.]

It's not a contradiction. We know that Golden Saucer and player housing is coming, but they haven't been explicitly/formally announced in terms of release or final manifestation; this is no different.

@Shurrikhan, I'm happy with the current DRG gameplay. For now I just want to ride around on it like a mount. :D

I play DRG as a DPS class, not a pet class. I'd definitely be upset if I have to micromanage a pet while I'm trying to do my job in a raid. I never signed up for that when I put all my time and effort into gearing DRG, and it'd be a dealbreaker if all of a sudden the class dynamic was changed right out from under me.

IF they did do multispec, I wouldn't mind so long as I could continue to not spec into a pet, I just don't want my capabilities to be kneecapped because of some terrible AI or busy body micromanagment forced upon a job that had these capabilities in a single game in a long series of games.

I just recently dusted off my drg, after not having played it since 1.23 and it's hard enough trying to manage your actions with spin happy PLDs, as well as other dps and healer classes that would rather run in circles than actually bring the mobs to the tank. So having to manage bot a pet and the positioning your actions I can imagine would be really painful (poor sch, I can only imagine your pain). Not to mention the lore just seems to not allow it at the moment with the Ishgardians being at war and all with the dragons.

So you have no issue micromanaging dots and buffs but a big issue micromanaging an extension of your dps that on average you don't even need to give the time of day? Hilarious.

Except Dragoons kill dragons in FFXIV. You give a DRG access to a dragon, the dragon will look like swiss cheese within minutes. You can't make a job go against its own nature and concept.

I'm hoping it's a pet for a future pet class and not a minion. Minions are cute and all but I want to have a deeper relationship with my wyvern as a companion and battle partner. That is what I miss most about it.

A dragon/wyvern pet class; would be pretty neat. Dragoons are thought to be dragon killers in XIV; could be an interesting storyline between a dragon pet class/dragoons (Not saying a dragon pet class will be released).

Wonder if they have any plans of the implementation of another pet job class? Perhaps the dd master/pet mechanics of XI will be no more; due to the dodging of attacks and whatnot.

I never considered my pet in FFXI to be a friend. I only ever considered it a tool for me use so that it can boosts my DPS. I never felt sad nor the need to appreciate my Wyvern when I used spirit surge in FFXI.

When I send my Chocobo or Egi to attack it never crosses my mind, "I'll keep you alive Titan Egi" or "Thank you for healing me my friendly Chocobo healer".

I'd rather Dragoons get Wyverns so that it becomes more visually appealing job. Which if FFXIV ever does implement it and it does include the ability Spirit Surge from FFXI. That only means that jumps can get a reset button so that you can do even more jumps.

But we don't micromanage DoTs and buffs. Because of the DRG combo system, it's very hard to miss when to put those up--they flow into each other. Telling your pet to move out of cleaves because it was originally closer to the side and now the tank has turned the boss 30 degrees to avoid killing a real party member while Heavy Thrust is coming up... is very annoying. Either it needs decent AI, rather than 'stand in fire while Windblading incessantly', or it probably needs to not work like a real pet (conditional health bar, or the ability to sacrifice auto-attacks to start flying, where it can still breath fire or dive, etc.). I agree, as in your other post, that it wouldn't be an issue if you didn't have to give your Wyvern 'so much as the time of day'. But I apply this only to movement mechanics--i.e. not babysitting your pet. If the pet is equally undirectable or uninvesting in terms of what I can use it for (a single jump-refresh ability does not shout *wyvern* to me), I personally don't want more white damage, and would be happier having such an ability on the Dragoon itself so I don't have wings beating in my face and obscuring my view all the time.

On that note Estinien's relationship (1.1 version, not ARR) with his wyrm is fairly interesting. It's a friendly relationship, exactly, but they have strong ties. ARR has since taken an even more anti-Dragon turn though.

Dragoons killed dragons in FFXI too and yet that didn't stop them from getting a wyvern pet. One of their freaking traits was called dragon killer that made dragons get "intimidated" (sort of a random small stun effect) by just having dragoons fight them. Knowing how the game worked the hidden piercing type damage of the lances probably did more damage to dragons too. In FFXI there were good and evil dragons. Just because we haven't seen good dragons in FFXIV yet doesn't mean they're evil by default. Also you need to be corrected. Ishgardians and their dragoons kill dragons. Freelance adventurers that take on the role of dragoon aren't necessarily required to kill dragons if anything the only dragon the story of dragoon has really said you need to kill is Nidhogg.

I would like Wyvern but, I think maybe when the game evolves a little further.

I realize that it granted DRG much to offer in both party support roles and complementary soloing potential, but I doubt FFXIV would allow either characteristic to be added to its mobility and burst in any nearby levels. The only job that has come close to being that multifarious was already nerfed for that exact reason. Compared to (especially multiple expansions of) FFXI, FFXIV jobs are much more hard-boiled, and more widespread abilities such as silences and cleanses are much more job-reserved. I would expect that you would see only the dps use and a little complementary personal support from Wyverns within the next couple expansions, if not ever. That and the "don't need to give the time of day" comment are why I considered only white dps and the ability you explicitly mentioned wanting...

I'm more interested in the fact that they may allow people to go into a dungeon solo and bring out your chocobo. Since all you need is the chocobo to get a party boost, I do it all the time in the field to boost my int on BLM to party level. That would be neat, hopefully doing it solo wont involve a level sync though, would be a nice way to level the chocobo off dungeon exp.

funny you should say that since in FFXI you had to do just that to unlock DRG, and in FFXI your wyvern is not a pet but a loyal companion and , you dont actually control him except through various weapon skills. for them to turn the wyvern into an actual pet would be bad

I think I'd prefer my character's skills and abilities be from their mastery of technique and connection with the force they draw energy from, instead of a connection to an animal.

I still don't understand this need to have a wyvern. It's part of the reason I avoided Drg in ffxi.

Because the original DRG is not a Pet-Class. And no, the FF Series and DRG did not start with XI. -_-

The pet job mechanics in XI were awful imo. It may have been a flawed concept, because the sacrifice in power rendered the dd underpowered and this was very noticeable on harder content. So basically, an underpowered dd and his extremely under powered pet were trying to compete with other dds whom were at full strength. Pet job's full potential relies on the pet/master combo, but individually; the aforementioned are under powered, hence finding a perfect balance could be difficult (is there a perfect balance?), without breaking things.

If they were to release a wyvern; drgs may be better off if it were a limit break attack or a full on breeder class; that sacrifice in power was no fun imo, lol (Just my opinion). Hated watching sams, wars, and rngs use their awesome dd enchnacing JAs while I stood their with....well...nothing really XD (Unless you have a mythic). Not knocking those whom want it, others may like the idea of a pet wyvern^^

I use /War, Dnc, and nin. Sams and rng could also sub war; which would negate the /war advantage because bst were always at a disadvantage dmg wise. Wars could go /sam to enhance their power, not to mention the merit abilities. Bst are significantly weaker than top tier dds; due to this, non-pet dds will always have an edge because their power was not sacrificed. The pet is significantly weaker than the master, hence the poor hit-rate and dmg. The pet and the master need to work together to achieve maximum dps, this is were the issues lies imo. For instance; individually, the pet and master are weaker than non-pet dds; hence they struggle on harder content because, well, individually they are weaker and cannot achieve maximum damage because of this.

Edit: Pet food was recently released because of the sacrifice in power, which in turn affects general stats. Pets could not land hits on difficult content. SE is still working/monitoring this issue. The pet food is not enough according to the pet community; they want more, but sadly, the issue is much bigger than food imo; but yea, dual wielding was forced, although it would not have mattered imo; bst had no offensive JAs; killer instinct boosted the entire pt which would still negate the dd advantage.
