That's already been done twice. The GMs killed it both times.
As you're SO fond of saying "You're free to not engage with posts that you don't like"
I just love Venat, and I thought that people who are angry might feel better if they see her as well. I didn't mean to make you angry, I apologize for that. But you're right, I'll switch it up
https://64.media.tumblr.com/fa758888...93bb394fe0.gif
Two different individuals already tried to pre-emptively create one, actually. One of them was deleted, the other is still around but didn't pick up traction.
I don't think there will be any major criticism towards Dawntrail. All signs point to it being a rather low stakes, sanitised affair. Endwalker is particularly controversial since it took many different story arcs built up over time and then tried to awkwardly conclude them all at once.
It's not a great situation for a game that actively brags about being 'story driven' but it is what it is.
Your concern is appreciated and I do think Venat looks a lot better in that particular gif.
Though I do not get the impression that anyone posting in this thread is angry. It's simply a debate about a video game story, after all.
My curiosity remains, though - do you have anything to bring to the table that is relevant to the thread's premise? What aspects of Endwalker did you not enjoy or believe could have handled better?
I imagine they were just bait/shtposting. I meant it in a slightly serious way, once the expansion is out and done with. I'm not fond on leaving this subforum.
I'm still stuck around 6.4 and haven't done the last raid tier or the 24man, due mostly to lack of motivation.
I hope this weekend leaves me optimistic for the future.
Wait. If there's still one around, that means it was done three times already.
I'd say this sub-forum is the best of the lot, in all honesty. So I don't blame you.
I'm mostly curious to see if every new zone is going to be in Tural or if they'll do another expansion split that takes place elsewhere. If they can capture the vibes of the Ys games in terms of exploring an unfamiliar region then it might just manage to retain my interest.
I'm curious about the new jobs at least and somewhat excited about the graphical update - especially if they finally fix the issue of Highlander men lacking authentic eyebrows.
I doubt I'll ever treat the game as anything other than a backup option, especially if its competitors dangle a more intriguing premise for their upcoming expansions. I've made my peace with the idea that MMO's are too unreliable to commit to on an exclusive basis. Even if the story isn't mishandled there's the issue of content droughts and friends burning out/taking their leave altogether.
To say nothing of the fact that non-MMO games often loom on the horizon. I'm looking forward to Dragon's Dogma 2, Tekken 8 and FFVIIR: Rebirth.
I honestly do hope you find a game you enjoy more, but if this game is still worth your sub money (which it currently is, you're here), then that's cool too.
There are a ton of things I didn't particularly like about Endwalker. But the reality is this thread is simply 800+ pages of "I like garlemald and ancients, I don't like Venat". The problem with that train of thought is SE doesn't care. Venat is good. Emet and company were tragic, but ultimately wrong in their actions. Why? Because the writers say so. I can write all the fan fiction I want about how it 'should' have gone, but that's all it is, fan fiction. At the end of the day you're playing in SE's sandbox, and I've come to grips with that, despite my dislike of a lot of their decisions.
Except for the part where a fair portion of the criticism is focused on how much of the story simply can't stand up to scrutiny, Venat being but a single part of that. A part that keeps getting talked about specifically because it represents one of the the most recent and flagrant symptoms of the writers relying so hard on feels to carry the story as to largely disregard reason and logic. Saying they didn't expect people to think so deeply about it is a copout. They're well aware this is a story-focused game first and foremost. They should fully expect its players to analyze the story up, down, left, right, and center.
I, and I think a lot of other people, don't care about Venat in the sense people seem to think. I don't really care about the ancients overly much either, although I did find their part in the story to be one of its highlights. I'd be lying if I said I give a damn about Emet-Selch outside of having found him a highly entertaining change of pace from the villains we usually see served up in fiction these days. What I do care about is things making sense. They at present do not. I'm quite confident I am far from the only person with this mindset.
As I've said before; you want me to think X thing about a character, location, event, object, etc., you show me that thing. You don't tell me that thing then show me the exact opposite. The writers have been pretty hit or miss on this for a while now, in my opinion.
Yes, many of those posting in this thread are well aware of that fact and have repeatedly acknowledged that they are coming here to share feedback with the expectation that it may very well never be read.
Some who took issue with the story happened to dislike the direction of the other aspects of the game and have left altogether. Others have remained since they still find elements of the game to their liking. They're not mutually exclusive factors and it isn't like it takes much time to type up a post in between doing other things.
I'm not sure where you're getting the idea from in regards to this thread solely revolving around Venat - or Garlemald - since there's been a great many posters with different reasons cropping up over the course of the thread's existence who do not necessarily share the same issues with the way in which the expansion played out. As it happens, a new patch recently went live and so that contributed to this thread receiving a fresh bout of activity.
I don't recall any fan fiction being posted in this thread, either - perhaps you're mistaking it for another? I do my best to source my talking points - especially when highlighting retcons and inconsistencies in the established narrative.
At the end of the day, the writers chose to tie the Ancients to practically everything of note in the setting so far with only a handful of exceptions. So it's inevitable that they're going to dominate the conversation where the story is concerned until the game truly commits to moving on from them.
Whether it does or does not remains to be seen. Perhaps we'll get more of a sense of that with the upcoming Fan Fest. I would have liked the game to grant more agency to various characters and factions in order to better allow them to stand atop their own two feet but it's a bit too late for that now.
I don't know if it's off topic but is there any reason they don't make the raid or 24 man content MSQ mandatory? Given how Eden had some influence in the last patch, it feels like this idea to keep it separate is kind of dumb.
So original at least 2 people beat you to it weeks ago
LMAO. Troll confirmed.
Neither are any of the other characters. So we can just slaughter everyone like animals i guess. Great morality.
No she seems to just be a mass murderer. I see now why you are on her side. You follow the same morale.
That for some people the time line gets changed in order to save them why others are not important enough.
Huh? Hasejfß? What`??? WAhsofjas``?
It's so pointless talking to you.
Blah blah assumptions & stupidity from you again. Come back when you learnt to read. Funny hearing stuff from you when you can't understand anything anyone ever posts. Took you like 50 posts to understand time loops.
"Why is this topic 900+ pages?"
The crystal tower was a major part of shadow bringers and brought G'raha into the main cast permanently. Unless we make use of Eden or start teaming up with Ryne full time again we likely won't see Gaia for more than a few shots. There would need to be a reason to talk about the Twelve in more than just passing conversation for the raids to be needed.
It's just the tribal nature of humanity at play, I suppose. There's people who joke about hating anyone who happens to enjoy pineapple as a topping on a pizza and then there's individuals who make it weirdly personal and cannot grasp the concept of personal tastes that differ to their own.
This community is so weird and overly sensitive. You're not able to ever say anything negative about this game for some reason, despite it having obvious flaws. You'd think this community would want them addressed and fixed, but nope.
Protein is protein. Gotta get them gains, right?
As an aside, I want to see more 'out there' food in general when it comes to FFXIV's offerings. Just having straight up copies of 'safe' dishes that exist in the real world doesn't really cut it for me. I thought it was pretty cool that WoW had culinary dishes based around spiders. It was fun to have my night elf snack on them around humans in roleplay.
It'd be nice to at least get the Final Fantasy monsters in on the dishes. Even FFXI has the Behemoth Steak. They don't even have to shy away from their love of real world cuisine. They just need to highlight the fantasy/monster ingredient.
They did recently-ish include melon pie from FFXI, which was made with thunder melons. It made me quite nostalgic even though its effect was drastically different.
Unfortunately, FFXIV since 2.0 has not had strong world building. Remember that everything we've gotten has had some precursor lore from 1.0 (outside of certain expansion zones), so I don't have a lot of faith in the current FFXIV development team to even care about / realize the value of world building in an MMO.
Development teams for MMOs have largely forgotten what makes a good MMO and what keeps the experience novel. They keep constantly going for the lowest common denominator with regards to who they're trying to attract to subscribe to the game, and in FFXIV's case they now rely on churn to get new players while the old slowly let go.
Of course, how do you have a novel experience in an MMO in the current era? Where every piece of content is datamined or leaked before it even goes live. Where even if the world design had loads of mystery and opportunities to explore, it'd be ruined by said leaks/datamines. I mean, MMOs in general used to be a novel experience, because online play with a multiplayer RPG was brand new a couple of decades ago. Now it's old hat, so the novelty has to come from something else.
And at every turn, the difficulties that brought people together in MMOs are removed in favor of convenience to the individual. You'd think they'd at least make up for it with quality storytelling or worldbuilding, but I guess they feel like they don't have too.
You've grown weak in your old age lil sis.

Speaking of FFXI, one of the raids in Dawntrail is going to be based off of it...
I never played FFXI myself, though.
It's so old at this point, it's an entirely different beast these days.
It's pretty easy to play through once you've tackled Playonline's late 90s/early 2000s internet setup quirkiness. You are given summonable Trusts that allow you to make your own party of NPCs, where you are more or less the nucleus of the party (you die, they die). This lets you play without others for the entirety of every storyline with the exception of very late The Voracious Resurgence (though you can grind for master levels to do it alone).
The storylines are honestly hit or miss, with some of them being incredible, while others are just sorta there. It was still a higher plane of storytelling than most MMOs had when it was current, but in the old days you'd forget storyline details because they were not released all at once. You'd be given expansion content and a few story quests, and then there'd be a hiatus for the story until the next major patch.
So for example, Wings of the Goddess, its fourth expansion come out in early 2007. But its main story did not originally finish until late 2010. (the sentiment at the time was that they were beginning to funnel XI funds into XIV)
If you were to try it out, I would suggest be patient with getting it setup. Then choose your preferred race and nation, and then pick one of the melee classes since spells cost money and have opaque mechanisms you'll have to look up to understand completely. Your Trusts as you acquire them from Records of Eminence and Rhapsodies of Vana'diel storyline will do most of the heavy lifting spellwork wise, and there are 16 jobs beyond the starting 6 for you to unlock and try out anyway.
Combat is Everquest like with auto attacks based on weapon delay and Haste or Slow effects. It's very possible to hands off a lot of fights, especially with Trusts.
Each zone has unique music with a few exceptions, and you will unlock mounts via the Chocobo License quest at level 20, and a quest proceeding it to unlock mounts kept in your KI inventory. The quest itself takes about 6 real life hours to complete, due to having to wait for game days to pass (chocobo license). The proceeding quest takes much less time, though you will only start out with a Raptor as your default mount.
Fighting and encounters in XI rely heavily on foreknowledge. You sort of need to plan out how you're going to approach fights before you do them, but the large majority of content of the game is pre-Item Level, and so it can be crushed rather easily with a level 99 character wearing i119 gear.
They didn't kill skillchaining and magic burst, did they? Because I have a hard time believing those would remain a thing if the game is now tuned to be playable solo with NPC assistance.
Fond memories of disregarding the common knowledge of subbing WAR as DRK and instead using SAM so I could slip in extra skillchains or even skillchain and magic burst off of myself when necessary. The fact it consistently outperformed others using the "correct" build was just icing on the cake.
Nah, SCs and MBs are still around, and even had a resurgence in popularity and use due to the damage cap of 99999. In fact, most weapon types on a job that can use all WSes for a particular weapon are capable of making Self Double LIght or Self Double Darkness with the right amount of Store TP and Haste. Magic Bursts and Skillchains have even been given job traits that directly raise their damage, and a lot of mage Trusts have a script telling them to MB skillchains and to even close skillchains with a weaponskill.
For instance, the Shantotto II Trust melees with magical auto attacks and nukes with Tier 1 Elemental magic that has roughly the strength of Tier III/IV elemental magic from players (ignoring for gear bonuses). She also has weaponskills with the Distortion, Gravitation, and Fusion properties (these also carry the Darkness and Light properties), and she will close SCs with one of them randomly, most often opting for the Distortion one in my experience. She will then Magic Burst twice, due to the casting speed of Tier 1 magic being so quick. She'll land both MBs guaranteed if other trusts or player closed an SC instead.
They did, however, implement the, "Nuking Wall." As SCs are easy to make and maximize magical accuracy, people had started to stack Black Mages casting Death, which will deal 99999 on NMs instead of killing them, assuming it goes unresisted. To cut down on the effectiveness of this, hitting a monster with spells of the same element too quickly back to back will lower the damage of each successive nuke.
Other than that, the 4th iteration of ultimate weapons, Aeonic weapons, come with an Aftermath effect that allows their associated weaponskill to make Radiance or Umbra. Which are considered, "Tier 4 SCs" or Level 4 SC. Basically Light or Darkness that does extra damage if you haven't already hit capped damage. The only sad thing about them being, they look identical to Light or Darkness.
Kinda makes me want to play the game again. It's been a long time. Did DRK ever recover from being nerfed into the ground way back in the day?
Tangentially relatedly, I always felt like FFXIV was missing something in not having skillchains and magic burst. Those two systems were quite fascinating.
DRK's never been nerfed to my knowledge. If you're referring to them making monsters resistant to Souleater to counter Souleater Kraken Club zergs of Absolute Virtue and other challenges... the game has departed from that being a high source of damage, due to the decline in HP% doing more damage than just raw base damage and weaponskills. As far as I am aware, there aren't many things past the Voidwatch era that resist Souleater at all.
Kraken Clubs nowadays are best in the hands of Rangers, who have accuracy bonus traits out the ass that allow them to have capped accuracy even when mainhanding the KC, maintaining their i119 off of just their Crossbow or Gun.
So FFXI is a lot like Eureka and Bozja but with much more depth? I kind of regret not getting into it back in the day though my backlog of games is already immense.
As for story related gripes...I can only feel indifference towards Dawntrail. If I do end up buying and playing it, I'll likely just become a cutscene skipper. I don't care about the Scions and there isn't even an attempt to throw a meaningful bone to anyone who didn't want the Ancients/Ascians, Garleans and the Void to all be pushed into a state of irrelevance.
I'd point to the Fall Guys crossover as an excellent representation of the game's current state - it legitimately felt like playing through a fever dream. I guess if nothing else it shows how important it is to not only maintain consistency when building a world in terms of its story but in regards to tone and aesthetics.
To counter the 'u just h8 fun m8' rhetoric, I'd point out that my second favourite game in the franchise is FFIX. That game had a pretty cutesy art style and plenty of comic relief but it knew when to play it straight and when to have the 'moments of levity' that FFXIV increasingly insists on pushing with greater frequency.
