Everything you needed to know about how boring and generic the current jobs would be was in their name.
Marauder
Pugilist
Gladiator
Conjurer
Thaumaturge
This is the fruit of that generic labor. A generic game. We don't want your generic piece of garbage MMO that's labelled as fresh and new. It tricks players like you into buying it, then you cry.
How about you listen the next time and put Red Mage and Thief up on the series pillars they deserve to be on instead of making the same launch mistake again by releasing a new wave of idiotically generic "classes."
We do. Not. Care.
If you need to throw out 20 years of FF lore and fake like you're innovating the series with stupid fodder like Enforcer...well...then it's no surprise we're in the mess we're in really.
Lol and look at all the people who want Square to make the same mistake again. Sad, really. To have experienced complete failure once, and petition for it to happen again by making the same poor choices.
Go ahead. Release Enforcer. See if any of us give a damn about the generic product that got more generic.
It's just a name.
The classes are meant to represent a category of magic/combat and you are supposed to devise a role from that. Just because you're in love with Final Fantasy and want to marry it doesn't mean the Armory System is flawed.
I think when SE adds the job/specialisation system to the existing armory system, people like yourself might stop complaining.
Uh. No. When SE adds the jobs that should have been in the game from the start, people who made this series will play it. It's not just a name. It's a fundamental flaw in this game's current design that leaves it empty and hollow.
The classes are a flop. And you want more flop.
No lol...none of these "classes" should be added. They should be deleted and never spoken of again, with the rest of the horribly generic product that launched in September. The arcanist's guild should be remodelled into something of worth and justice to the series, and the one arcanist you saw in an Ulda cutscene should be replaced by a veteran Black Mage.
None of that monumental mistake should be carried over to what we play 1 year from now. Nothing. This is not Wowclone 5. This is Final Fantasy. Go play Enforcer somewhere else.
If FF doesn't stay true to its roots, then Rift is the better product. If the jobs go generic and MMO trailor trashy, this game has nothing to offer really.
Thief
Warrior
Red mage
Monk
Black mage
Ninja
White mage
Samurai
Time mage
Dark Knight
Paladin
Summoner
Blue mage
Ranger
Mime
Dragoon
Final Fantasy. Deal with it or die a disgrace. Enforcer...get the **** out of here with that crap.
FFXIV is trying to reflect a fantasy reality. It's not just trying to pay homage to your opinion of what a so-called Final Fantasy "should be." It's funny because you say that preset jobs would make the fantasy world better, but to me it would only make it worse. The classes are left vague because the vaguaries of the class system gives rise to many specialisations and roles, both final fantasy related and otherwise.
Meanwhile, the additions SE is making to the armory system in the future will probably help give definition to the roles people choose, while still giving them freedom to add individuality to their classes, and switch between roles if need be.
You say FF should go back to its roots. But roots are for trees and plants. (Trees and plants can't move forward.)
I think you need to go back and remediate the changes. You're going to be disappointed.
You already have Black Mage and Dark Knight suits.
You already have the director agreeing that this isn't Final Fantasy.
Take your generic stuff and make a Vagrant Story Online. here, take Tanaka's hand. Make that ****. I'll play that.
Just don't put your stupid cat with a whip in it.
"I'm a Rank 45 Fiendfeller!"
"I couldn't care less! Jim, invite the Dragoon."
It's a multiplayer online game first and foremost. Even in Final Fantasy games, not every single individual played by the "rules". WTF class was Wakka? Kimahri? Quistis? Esepecially in an MMO where you are playing with real people, you have to account for the individuality of those people.
Those Final Fantasy games didn't specify classes for Wakka, Kimahri, or Quistis because they were single-player games that were completely story-driven and the characters didn't require classes. It was about the characters themselves, not what type of fighter they were. If you want that in a 1-player game, play FF3 or FF5. In an MMORPG, you have to choose what type of fighter you want to be, that's kind of obvious. Sure, with any generic MMORPG, class names like "Swordsman" or "Magician" will work perfectly fine, and it can still be a great game, right? But this is Final Fantasy XIV, and Final Fantasy fans flock to this game because of the name. You said earlier that it's only a name, but you're wrong; FF fans wanted to play this game because they knew it would nurture that sense of nostalgia for them.
Final Fantasy XI was the perfect solution for an online Final Fantasy game. The job system, party system, everything works awesomely. The only problem is that the graphics are outdated. To define the new generation of an online Final Fantasy game, it should stay true to the roots (different type of roots than plant roots, mind you; many words in the English language have multiple definitions), and use traditional Final Fantasy features. It should BE what Final Fantasy was originally meant to be.
The point is, names like Gladiator and Lancer are fine, but they are fine for ANY game. That is the problem. With this game's current state (minus the moogles in Gridania's cutscenes) you can change the name of the game to anything else besides Final Fantasy and it would work. That is what concerns many of us.
Peregrine. The names for the current classes are based off the weapons. Yoshi-P already said they were implementing a Job System to augment that system. The three biggest ideas people have released in reguards to how they could be done are all very awesome sounding to certain points, though some for aesthetics do not jive with me personally but here they are.
Job Title System: You gain access to a title that gives you bonuses for equipping certain skills, gives access to Job Traits and allows for specialization based on roles not weapons, The weapon classes still dictate when you learn skills and how they operate per weapon but the title dictates how proficient you are in certain tasks.
Job Tree System: After leveling a class to a certain level you gain access to points to spread out in a job tree that gives you bonuses as you branch out.
Advanced Job System: After hitting a certain level in one Class, you unlock an Advanced job to level up above that.
Personally I'm hoping for the first one and that it doesn't have levels on its own but just helps you dictate how proficient you are in certain tasks.
IE. No matter what your Weapon Class is, If your White Mage you'll always be good at healing.
Also, All of the single player games since FF3 have dictated or designed characters based off of specific Jobs. Sometimes they implemented a new job for a special character but eventually even that was returned again in a newer FF or Tactics game.
You can say FF7 has no jobs but it does, Cloud = Warrior, Tifa = Monk, Barret = Engineer, Vincent = Ranger, Yuffie = Ninja, Sephiroth = Samurai. Etc.
Wakka was a Gambler, Auron was a Samurai, Khimari was a Blue Mage, so was Quistis, etc. Just because their skills were not locked down doesn't remove that those are the jobs they were designed around.
yeah i think the idea would be to have classes as a different mechanism than the armory system. Surprisingly the armory system is one of the features people actually did like about this game. If they rename pugilist monk, that will suck the most. I think they should have them as over jobs, IE armory is your weapon, Class is your overall job, adds more elements and abilities that make you special.
With that, i would also want some new weapons, staves, clubs, whatever the case may be. And i think that arcansist sounds like a pretty interesting mechanic, and mages definiately need more style and variety. it would make sense like so
your a monk pugilist, or a monk stavesman or a monk enforcer. Monk would be the overall job, available to people who got those any of those classes to 35, it might sport increased speed, boosted self heals, and the addition of kick attacks and counters and some sort of super powered ability/ies that come from this overall set. and would have a different overall class story
Blm conjurer Blm thaum Blm mystic.
theif pugilist thief gladiator thief archer thief gunner.
dragoon lancer dragoon gladiator
etc. Its not mutually exclusive and has a lot of potential as a system. By mixing whats already in the armory system, with job specialties, you can truely create a unique class, but it will still have an FF feeling. You can make a rdm who is more melee than magic, or vice versa. A hand to hand thief, an elemental ninja.
so armory is your weapon or style of choice, and job is your actual job. Sounds fine to me. It could also be a less grindy system that provides progression after the cap, that can be periodically raised without altering all the gear levels.
I like the phrasing
"Job is your Role, Weapon is your class."
so a
White Mage Marauder is a a Axe Wielding Healer basically.
Which in my head sounds... AWESOME.
Let's not forget the fact that these are called disciplines, not jobs.
What happens when you train yourself in a certain discipline?
-You become skilled in said discipline
-You learn new skills pertaining to the discipline.
-Learned skills can be used to augment your training in other disciplines.
-After being trained in many disciplines, you'd be able to choose which skills you want to utilize and how, in order to create your own unique skillset. Oh, look at that. The basis of the armoury system!
That's the basis of the armoury system. You train in one thing, augment your other disciplines with skills from other ones. There's a very clear reason it wasn't called the job or class system: because the way it works would not fit such descriptions. It's like one of those icecream buffets. Build your own sundae! Only this is build your own class.
With the upcoming job system, it makes no sense to scrap the armoury system. Why, you ask?
Let's say you wanted to get a job as a house builder/whatever the hell you want to call it. Chances are you'll need multiple subsets of skills such as carpentry, machinery operation, plastering, maybe plumbing or electrical. The more skill you have at your disposal, the better. If you lack any experience or training in the disciplines required to do your job properly, good luck with that!
The names Square gave us in English aren't quite as basic as the literal names in Japanese. For them, it's Sword User, Bow User, Axe user, etc. Very literal as to not define a class role, because it is up to the player to build and define their own class. With many Westerners failing to understand such a concept is where the thought of an overlaying job system was even considered.
And Peregrine, again with the discipline names, many do stem from past FF titles. Mainly via original translations of the "traditional" jobs or the Tactics games. Just because you have your head up FF6/FF7's ass doesn't mean they don't exist.
Arcanist, Mystic and many others are very much in past FF games.
Peregrine has gone from having ok idea's to blatantly trolling.
I like the idea of having most of those classes in XIV, if they would give them some very unique skills at least, and make the animations a lot better.
Seeing the same animation for most skills (on my lancer) has gotten a little tiring.
I was looking forward to having fencer put in the game, since it would be a sword class that isn't a tank (so it seems)
I'm not the best tank, but i do love my swords.
Wow, Peregrine's snapped again..... This is really starting to become a far too common thing >.>
How is Fencer or Flayer not imaginative classes? How many other MMOs have either a fencing class or a whip-based class? I certainly can't think of any off the top of my head.
Fencer at least has precedent in the FF series (FFTA/A2, possibly others). You can't really speculate on how effective it would be in any role without seeing stats or skills. I know in FFTA/A2 they had some status skills as well as some AoE skills (adjacent & pierce). Outside of that insight we can't really assume much else.
Whips were both a 1 handed and a 2-handed slashing weapon in Everquest.
A subscription based mmo with Dual wielding whips.
It can be done.
If they add the Flayer class (whips), Miqo'te should be unable to use them.
Would be interesting to see race restricted classes, but that would also be extremely annoying, especially if you are locked out of one of the classes you want to play.
I hope they add in class based stats though, trying to balance stats to fit each class can be a pain, especially going mage-melee.
Really looking forward to great-katanas tho....
Ah okay so there's 3. But 3 is a drop in the bucket as far as the MMO genre goes. It's still a fairly unique idea that isn't as widely used as say Sword/Shield, Axe, Lance, etc...(all our current classes). Either way I'd still like to see it, it would add some flavor to the game's classes.
I'm extremely against this though. There's no logical reason any class should be tied to a specific race or gender. It would kind of completely screw over people who are already playing and made their race/gender choices, not to mention going against the entire way the game is played.

I'm also against it, just thought it would be interesting.
You could always add in race abilities or something though, to make each race unique in something other than appearance. Just something to think about.
i got half way through this thread before i got bored. :O someone change the title to 'wasting time with peregrine' so people will skill through to the end.
This thread does a rather good job of cementing my belief that MMO players as a whole are utterly incapable of imagination, and one of the major reasons WoW is so popular is because it holds your hand to the extent that you simply don't have to think for your self (and in the few cases where you do, there are mods for that).
Many of the classes that people are clamoring for can be created using the classes already in the game. Just because it doesn't spell it out for you in bold letters on your character sheet doesn't mean it's not the case. =(^.^)=
Seeing as your ideas ruined the first FF14, not really interested in you all doing it again.
These are poor ideas for this game.
Delete them. Add the jobs everyone is here for.
You're not being imaginitive. You're not being creative. You're being generic and new for newness sake while bringing nothing to the table.
Those jobs have no role in the final fantasy world. Never did. And they won't.
Gladiator was a mistake. Marauder was an error. Pugilist is a disgrace to the series.
And now you want to add ten more because you think a whip is innovative.
Didn't work the first time. Won't work the second time. You're leeching the FF name when you belong playing dead MMO after dead MMO because no one gives a **** about your enforcer class in the end.
This is non-negotiable. Stop the generic crap aimed at generic players. Make this a Final Fantasy or it's finished.
Peregrin You are still treating the Weapon Classes we have in XIV as if they were Job Roles like XI when they are not.
Litterally all Gladiator means is "Sword User" Its someone who uses a sword Their only role in battle is using a sword.
The Job System will implement roles that a "Sword User" can perform like Tanking (Paladin), Subterfuge (Thief), Healing/Nuking (Red Mage) or any other combination you could want.
If you need proof of this just translate the Japanese forum lists.
Class
Professional wrestling / professional fencing / professional art ax / professional archery / professional 槍術 / illusionist / professional magic / teacher mining / teacher Horticulture / fisherman / teacher carpentry / smiths / armorer / chaser / leatherworker / tailor / alchemist / cooks
A Paladin is not a Sword User, they are someone who puts themselves in front of others and takes damage meant for their friends. (A Tank). They use their High Defense, Their High Health, Their Healing Abilities, and their Holy Magic to perform that task. They can use Swords, Shields, Spears, Clubs, Hammers, and Staffs amongst other weapons to perform that task.
A Gladiator is a Sword User. They can be a Tank, A Thief, A Mage, etc.
I don't care what gladiator means. If I tell you your name means short brunt does that make you short and oafish?
No, and Gladiator isn't acceptable just because you know what the name means.
Paladin. Now. End the string of mistakes. Kill those generic no-hope classes. Grinding 50 levels of a no-name moron sword user just to play a job of worth is a stupid idea.
A MMO where players make their own paladins is again, a stupid idea. It cannot work. You are not a paladin. You are a gimp. The only way you will ever be a paladin is if THEY design a paladin.
I see a lot of people who got burnt and made fun of in XI for playing how they want to play, and I'm sure the release FFXIV rewarded your mold-breaking snowflake.
But it's a 4/10 MMO your way. Sorry. It's not going to work. Delete the generics.
Peregrine, filling in for Belgian Rofl one post at a time. guess someone else goes onto my ignore list for trolling the fuck out of a valid thread :D
Those interested in this thread, follow my example, and just carry on discussing as though she doesn't exist.
A lot of my Favorite Job combinations in XI were frowned upon in "Normal Parties" yes, but they had their place in the game.
White Mage/Paladin - Tank and Main Healer for Bones Parties full of Monks.
Red Mage / War - Tanking for certain slow attack mobs and for Mage Burn Parties.
War / Ranger - Tanking and participating in Arrow Burn Parties (Normally doing more damage then Rangers LOLZ)
I'll go against twice as many people here. You all are obviously over-concentrated fans of an unpopular system. Bias by absenteeism. Your ideas were a major problem. You liked the ideas so you're the only ones left. You petition for more of the same horrible ideas that left you all as the only people playing this game.
This game dies if they listen to you. Generic jobs were a terrible idea. More generic jobs is a more terrible idea.
20 years of FF lore and historyand the potential to expand on those archetypal roles found in literature and history makes it not a generic job.
Culture is lost on you all though. You just want cats with whips.
The FIRST thing Yoshida should have done was delete that crap. I think he knows as well as I do that they're a mistake.
Obviously you are not reading anything we say.
Read something posted somewhere else then.
