You could always start off the PLD at level 30, and diverge. So you get a set of new abilities, passives and such but since you already sort of know how to play they will let you start higher.

But I can imagine some unique play styles out of PLD not within GLD. Like a theory of cover and protection makes more efficent Paladin. Passive that reduces cooldowns / regen mana whenever X spell or cover is activated on ally, if the paladin covers an ally and the Paladin would have died from cover damage reduce Paladin's hp to 1 and ignore damage for 1 second (with a cooldown on how often the effect would happen) - such stuff like this would make a huge difference in HOW the Paladin would play. In the above Paladins would be stronger when protecting and putting their neck out, while a GLD may be defensive they are not encouraged to stick their neck out.


But I get what you are saying. If the difference between PLD and GLD is almost zero then why make me level all over again and waste my time, I get that. SO yes that shouldn't happen :P - the point would be to make each Job play different then their base classes.

As Yoshida said before jobs are more for party and classes for solo - so these kind of ideas can be built in easier as well if you gave the job a fresh base.

Everything when weapon = class the job = specialization of said class. Compare it to FFIII/V/TT/XI for example, there's no "restriction" in the number and style of classes because nothing is locked into one=one role like it is here. In XIV, slap on a Sword, bam, you're gladiator, slap on a Rod/Wand, bam you're Thaumaturge/Conjurer. The system itself isn't bad, but it's horrible when it comes to a job based FF game with so many options and ways of doing the system that keeping this base system just works against it when you think about it.

It's perfectly fine for those who never played FF games or wanted "absolute freedom".

Sure it would be nice if you weren't locked like that, but....a lancer with sword seems odd for example :p
But wouln't they need to make swords with magic boost, in case some BLM wanna use sword instead of wand? etc. otherwise it wouldn't make sense for BLM to use sword anyways.

That's why I exampled those mainly, especially XI. For example BLM could use short swords (rapier), Wands, Clubs and Scythes, however main weapon would be wands and clubs and there are some scythes that are better to use for stats. They aren't melee oriented so obvious you'd choose the best weapon for your stats.

DRG/LNC in a few FFs could actually use swords and lances but obviously they'd go with lances. So you'd have the choice but chances are it's an option better for someone else, i.e RDM would be best off using the swords over the wands or staffs compared to BLM. Having them locked to one line and making it turn you into a class by equipping them is why it's basically not good for additional jobs in the future.

Yoshida's idea was based around FFTTs where say you level WHM to 50, BLM to 40 and Gladiator to 20 you'll unlock RDM which could use swords. Something along those lines is all that's really left in this kind of system. Since simply "multiple specs on one class" can cause a slew of balancing problems sadly. If you've played any other MMOs with say talent trees, how often do you see people going against "the most efficient" one?

The other idea Yoshida had was you choose DRK or PLD, not both but this community fought against the idea and anyone who liked it even though it's literally a huge nod to Cecil given ARR's Fanservice nature. If you want to do raw damage and have some offensive magic (assuming), you'd pick Dark Knight especially if you know you'd never tank thus taking Paladin route wouldn't do much for you. There's a few ways to get around the AS limitation but overall, weapon = class kind of hindered what they can freely do.

I just want them to add more classes and jobs before they think about adding another job to gla and such, last thing i want this game to do is refuse to add more weapons types like XI. While most jobs could use multi weps most did not use more than one cause thier skill was not high enough with it except war/drk who always used 2 diff weps and i guess sam to some point

You have never used a sword in your life right?
I do some historical fencing, and believe me, there's a HUGE difference between fighting with a Sword and Shield and Sword and Buckler. The first makes you stable, defensive, slow. The second makes you quick, agile, versatile between attack and defense, lets you use a huge variety of stances.

Changing a sword for a rapier would make the difference even greater. Changing the two of them for a two handed sword means making stronger attacks sacrificing defense and mobility (at least I think, I'll practice with the hand-and-half next march).
It makes totally sense for a Sword and Shield class to be a tank. But change your weapons, and so does your battle style. That's what the Armoury system imitates from life.

I have actually, we're talking about the implementation of how it's been used in video games, RPGs in particular. Especially if you've played plenty of Square's RPGs. They all don't take real world appeal to it, notice how a lot of RPGs the swinging animation of a rapier or even degen is like using a regular broadsword? You've used swords before, you know how inaccurate and ineffective that actually would be.

Very few games actually treat the differences in style with how they are in real world.

I'm unclear exactly what the problem is with that. Are you wanting the freedom of a BLM to use daggers or a WAR to use a bow? I'm fine with weapon specialization for a specific Job. The classes are "locked" into the weapon in 1.0 but can still use skills from any other class. That was the big difference between class and job.

EDIT: Even being locked into a weapon you can get as much variety of weapon designs and skills as creativity allows.

Yeah I'm good at doing that. I have some random memory of a guy in my LS that was complaining he had to use a sword as a blm... but hey that was college days.. perhaps I had a little too much of something or other to remember anything correctly.

Yeah that's why I understand what you're saying, but a lot of RPGs generally don't take those differences into play when they design it, usually outta developer laziness. It's why I praise Ys games for example, in Ys Vi you can see the differences of Adol's attacks between the 3 styles of swords based on real world essentially.

You did, I was referring to the fact there's no real freedom of weapon choices due to being locked into base classes (weapon = class) for example as a Warrior, maybe you wanted to whip out a rapier for piercing bonus where your axe won't get enough damage on due to slashing resistance. You can't have that with the current AS system, that's what I was referring to that adding new jobs will pretty much lock them into what the base class uses.

Take into consideration with how 1.0 treated damage and 2.0 likely being the same (level correction = king) you won't hurt yourself much in damage since like the original setup, you could even use archer skills on gladiator (somehow.)

The problem I do see with limiting a weapon to each class/job combo is that the more weapons added the less likely you will get the item you wanted (if there is a 1/8 chance an item drops from Ifrit, but then you have 22 classes you have a 1/8 chance to get the 1/22 weapons you can use rather then say 10/22). I suppose they can change how loot drops a little in this aspect - but I imagine getting a weapon for your specific class will get more frustrating as classes are added. Though this also takes us back to stats and how to not make stats useless to classes (like say STR for a black mage increases some part of the spell while Dexterity increases another).

Also there are some classes/jobs in FF history that used different weapons logically like DRK using greats word, scythe, or mage with dagger/sword/book/staff/club, samurai with katana and bow, ect ect.

Though I think if they added multiple weapon choices they'd have to redesign sections of the class and turn those sections into weapon specific weapon skills much like FFXI or GW2. so.. that'd be totally different XD

Well i personally like to do things in non-traditional ways, deviating from cookie cutters, finding other ways etc, so i wouldn't mind more diversity. But there's the issue that people would roll items not inherent to their class, just cause they CAN use it; which would be stupid. But i don't think it's really any issue with it that equipping some wep forces a class.
If it does cause some issue later, they can change it then i suppose.

But there is freedom. At any time I could whip out my rapier as long as i had a skill built up with it (FFXI you needed to use it to make it useful right?) and start poking around with it. Sure it will change your job but then you would have more piercing skills and stances etc. If anything this makes it better. The ONLY way I can see this being restrictive is if the game was like WoW where if you wanted to change your job you had to make a whole new toon.

Thats true XD - like rogues in WoW rolling for hunter bows just so they can put it into their secondary slot for the stats, even though it would benefit the hunter 10000x more.

This can be fixed with having a need/greed system where if the item is off class you can only greed it and if you already have it you can only greed it. Leave the need for someone who can actually use it now.

You might be able to do this through stat allocation already, but I dunno what the for sure end plan is. Some things we see now may not be needed in the final release also so I just wait for an official word from the man.

He may have already mentioned it, but I haven't seen anything.

I remember Yoshi-p saying he want to make each class have more then one Job. Like let's say Pug can become monk or Puppetmaster.

He give a example like MRD+THM= DRK or something like that so i see this happening but link with the class becoming more then what type of job.

The job switching system is similar to WoWs changing specs in that you can play a different role on the same character. So its not really needed that each job have more then 1 role.

I never like the wow spec system and i hope it does not come to our job system for FFXIV. The idea of each class unlocking more then one job and can simple switch by adding the job stone is better then spec system.

i know the only spec system we going to have would be our chocobo which have healer,dps,tank role specs that make sense but i hope it never come to job system then it would really be a wow clone.

I thought they could do a spec within the point of the class, like specing your cure to apply a mild regen (stack swith regen) or specing your stoneskin to damage and stun a monster on break (good giving the tank a second breather or better soloing).

Things that already relate to the class a little. Though the stoneskin stun vs cure regen should probably be not in the same option area - chosing between two different options should always be similar like how WoW's latest system works (or how the devs tried to explain it: choosing between 3 neat features that are related).

If they are too different you will get more people respecing for every event "need 7 10 21" vs "I guess that will work" lol.

An idea of a choose one of three cure spec option: 1 cure spec decreases two debuff duration by 1 seconds and increases buff duration by 1 (some buffs would need to be excluded obviously), another adds a small hp regen that can stack with regen, and perhaps the last adds a buff if the target was healed for hp that decreases spell cooldowns by .25 seconds, and stacks up to 5 times - stack wears off after 7 seconds.

Its not really necessary to do these things but it would be interesting to see variations in each job, but that those variations wont hurt the jobs goal - like those cure changes would all be helpful to a party (first one would keep you buffed and knock off almost all stuns instantly (if cure timed right) as well as minor debuffs, while the second would just make you're cures stronger overtime, and the later.. I think it would be really good for tanks lol - I can imagine a tank using the lower cooldowns to keep defense spells up and to keep better hate.)

As a side thought the spell buff might be too complex but w.e it was an example :P

never like specs and i don't think it would work in FFXIV. FFXIV trying to be a game where you can try everything and be anything if you do specs it would limit you to that job and you have to keep reset it to do something else.

Let's try and keep the only thing that is not wow and that the job system in ffxiv please.


If you want variations then you can have it by having each class have more then one job link to them like

CONJ can become White mage or Scholar and THM can become BLM or something else but not have spec to make one job little better then other whm who pick something else from there role i find that little dumb. Reason is everyone would be made to pick the best ones by endgame matter what you think and how good they make it people would make other pick what is best overall that what happen in wow and i don't want that in ffxiv.

That all i have to say let keep the jobs system different from other games and add what yoshi-p was saying each class can have more then one job link to them that would give you different things to do within the same class.

Honestly, I just wish they changed the whole thing altogether. Yeah, yeah, I know it's not gonna happen, but still...

I wish that perhaps they would make it so changing your soul crystal would change your class instead of changing your weapon/tool, and then add a much broader variety to the types of weapons classes/jobs could use. Like, say, monks being able to use both knuckle type weapons or bo staves; gladiator/paladin being able to use both swords, maces and whatnot; black mages being able to choose from wands to staves to daggers, and the list would go on. That would eliminate said restriction from the existing classes and allow more freedom to create new ones (since they could use certain already existing types of weapons, just a tad differently), and would also help the issue where the more classes/jobs come out, the harder it'll be to get your desired weapon.

Yeah, I know it all sounds like XI, and I know it's not gonna happen, but still. A man can dream, right? :/

Truth to be told you just want more weapon variety within each class. That's not a bad idea at all, it isn't even hard to give weapon variety without overlapping too much, we already have classes with various weapon types (best example is gladiator with swords, paddles and knives).

Of course some people get VERY obnoxious about this and say "I want to wield knives on EVERYTHING" and will never simply be happy with five different weapon types per class, they NEED their very important KNIFE on EVERY SINGLE THING and such.

I guess it would all still come down to performance over preference in the end. In XI, a WAR could use almost every single type of weapon there was in the game, but they always went with axes (with the sole exception of a certain pair of swords). Why? Because WARs could wield axes much better than any other weapon. I guess the same could apply here if they went for that kind of approach.

all i know is thanks to warhammer. i will forever hate all dps healers. so if a mmo has them. they are literally boycotted from anything i ever do, any party i ever make. i hate, hate, hate dps healers. forever. and all mmo's with them. but the op mentions healer or buffer, that is ok, that is like brd or rdm or whm, but a mele healer that doesn't heal anyone but himself, screw that, a dps spec healer that tells people he is a healer only when it benefits him but lies cause he doesn't change his specs and ruins and locks people in dungeons for half a week..screw that. people that go, i payed my 14bucks, i play how i want like cartman on southpark, screw that. choices are good, but not in this situation. when you look at someone it's nice to know he is this, and not have to wonder if he is this or that or the other. or if he is lying or to dumb to know the difference.

plus if they want to add rdm they will probably just add rdm. not really a need for a tree like this. did i mention screw dps healers? FU.

as a side though, even though i hate dps healers the idea of picking a class and a job together would of been cool, like tank can hold any weapon, a healer can have any weapon and so on, so really your picking your job tank, healer, mele, buffer, support but then can use it with any weapon. but the down fall in this would be, i hate mele healers, and those types would be hated probably by all. lmao also picturing everyone picking archer with there job class. lol.

they need to treat the classes like the jobs, give then a story, give the AF, give them relic, give them GOOD skills the job cant use and so on then people will take it seriously.

And I mean they would actually have some sort of a talent tree to get bonuses towards going these routs(yes I know its very WoW sounding) Not sure if I like this idea myself, but thought it was interesting enough to post.
