Definitely just looks as Chocobos will already be our battle pals.
I'm not against pets per se but I'd find it rather annoying to see people running a serious dungeon with a baby behemoth following around. Just looks a bit stupid IMO.

I'd have to agree. As far as I'm concerned, I'd be quite happy with pets being limited to housing lots, but that's probably not going to be how it works. . . . Already scared of cities being full with people spawning exact copies of Carbuncles all over. Kinda makes the Carbuncle less special in my eyes .___. but oh well, I'll have to deal with it :p
Well I think Blizzard keeps a fairly healthy balance on pets they sell on their store. They are just so ungodly they could sell in-game digital crap for your pets and half of their gaming population would buy it to find out what it is and they would make an easy 1 million! Sad but true!
Would they do that? No, but it would happen if they did!
If you want to go down that route, it'd be nice to have combat companions to choose from:
1) Chocobo
2) Moogle
3) Path Companion
4) one of your retainers
5) A suspiciously familiar doberman
Damm We Are BORED!!!!!
Yup, very true! Repeated threads & post for the past few days/weeks all about speculated and random BS about ARR. We are all just eager to get our hands on ARR and solid info. Hopefully the 7th will be something promising, which coming from Yoshi-p he could have a nice trick up his sleeve. :]
Hell yeah duelle!!! Interceptor gimme gimme XD. I always said the day i get a dobie thats gonna be his name
Puppetmaster!

With this im sure that a hunter class is on paper, or maybe a beastmaster with a bow, he doesnt look like a bard now
Bows have built-in infinite arrows in ARR, it's no longer necessary to carry stacks of arrows. Bow stats are re-calibrated in light of this, so that you'd get the same power as you would from using arrows of the highest possible level for the bow's level (by v1's standards). Since arrows with special effects are removed from the game, these effects will be converted to skills usable with any bow, probably made available around the same level as the arrows they replace, and/or bows with special effects.
As for throwing weapons, they're supposed to shift from stackable consumables to infinitely reusable single items.
That's the plan anyway...
In light of this, you don't need a pet to carry ammo in ARR.
Ahh I didn't know about arrows being infinite, I just recalled something about prices being reduced along with players' gil, and I remembered them using arrows as an example, could be wrong though ^^.
Yes, arrows were cited as an example because initially during game design for version 1, the prices of all items were intended to be lower, but this made even low-cost arrows too expensive because of their expendable nature and high value of the minimum currency unit, so they adjusted the cost of *everything else* to balance things out.
Imagine a Marauder axe costing 300gil, you can use that axe for a few levels without having to pay any more than that.
For an Archer, let's say you use around 500 arrows to get that many levels, even if you lower the price of the bow AND arrows to 1gil each, it'll end up costing you at least 501gil.
Rather than making fractions of gil, they inflated the price of everything other than arrows, diluting the value of 1gil, so that arrows would be affordable:
Axe: 3000 gil
Bow: 2500 gil + 500x 1gil for arrows = 3000 gil
By integrating arrows into bows and replacing other consumable munitions into reusable items which can be sold at a higher price, they practically removed every 1gil item in the game, making the cheapest remaining items 10gil or more. In light of this, they shaved off that last digit from every price in the game (as well as from our wallets) in a process called currency redenomination (look it up, it's a very real thing), so that the munition-less items can be priced the way they originally envisioned it, without the need for large numbers.
There are still people who adamantly claim that we'll be poorer because of the lower numbers (or that they're being robbed of 90% of their fortune), but really, buying a 300gil axe on a budget of 1000gil, or buying a 3000gil axe on a budget of 10000gil is really a 30% hit on your wallet in both cases, so same difference.
Of course, some items will have their price adjusted separately from the redenomination process as they may end up being more or less useful after all the rebalancing they're doing in ARR. Bows will probably see an increase in price to account for the fact you don't need to buy munitions anymore. A weapon with the ability to stun occasionally may end up being more valuable if the mechanics behind the Stun effect are changed (just an example, don't think they'll actually change that)
I stopped here because i said nothing about "paying" for them. o-o Whats with these forums and people throwing words in each others mouths.
Obtaining pets will be as easy as SE decides to make it. That small boost of having it summoned/unsummoned caters to the class/job functionality and can strengthen roles in a party. I mean, you have to admit, the idea isn't a bad one, it's just that, you're response is proof that when someone doesn't understand something, they are automatically against it, not even a question asked.
So much for throwing in a unique idea to try and steer away from the usual vanity pet idea that exists in every other MMO out there. This is why we have a "WoW" clone. lol
How about a pet system like Ragnarok online?
To get a Pet you need first a tame item. Then you use the tame item on the monster during the fight (like Pokemon).
After you tamed it successfully you get a pet egg. Now you need an incubator to hatch the egg.
Now you have your pet, but it is hungry and need food. Each pet need another type of food. If you don't feed it , it run away. If you feed it his love to you raise up. With the time it learn new tricks like emotes or spaming the chatbox full.
...So you tame a pet and then it turns into an egg?
. Everyone with little pets running around them sounds very gimmicky to me. The only animal/pet I want next to me, is my Chocobo. While I'm raising it.
Arcanist will have their summon pets. Beast master(when it comes) will have theirs as well. We all sound like children getting all excited to have a "Littlest pets shop" FFXIV mmo.
If Yoshi makes this game, draw towards little pets, that give you stats or what have you. It will feel very pokemon-ish to me. And it will feel/look silly seeing everyone with a pet icon running behind them.
Can we leave pets, running next to their master, to the Beastmasters and Summoners please.
SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) had a class called Bio-Engineer like this. (Keep in mind this is a Sci-Fi game vs. Fantasy ;)) You would go out and not tame but sneak up and extract DNA to breed your own pet. You could even cross-breed to combine abilities, colors and features. (still ended up looking like the base animal, just the color and stats changed)
Well once you bred a pet, it would start off as a baby. Basically a smaller scaled down version of the actual pet. Think full adult version just tiny. When you brought your animal out you could train it commands from animal handlers. (I forget the name it's been so long and this was Pre-NGE New Game Engine).
So alot like Pokemon you could level up your pet and train it new attack commands! There was even an option to stunt it's growth so it wouldn't grow any bigger. So you could always have baby, but it would be worthless in combat. (Think Vanity Pets)
On the flip side, there was an option to buy steroids to make a animal grow bigger than it's actual adult size! So you could have huge animals. But these steroids were temporary and your animal would shrink back down to normal size after about an hour.
I think SE could go the slightly extra mile and make baby versions of the animals your capture/tame when you raise them!
I only mention this because we seem to have A LOT of pokemon fans on here lol. I never played Pokemon, but I do see the appeal! :D
FFXIV, meet Chao Garden. >3>
Personaly i would like to see each class/job, have its own special pet it can use. Or even a few choices per class/job. Rather than all classes having same pets.
i totally would be just fine if the pets stays in the house, nothing more. i think anything else would be too much, since summoner is coming for sure and i hope later on beastmaster.
I figured they would add different ones eventually, what really sucked about the old system is you had to stop combat to switch or make a macro. At least with ARR you could just assign the other arrows to the action bar.
I'm just saying even though there is currently none, it doesn't mean it will always be that way.
I think it would be cool if you didn't have a house that your pet may be seen roaming the streets! SE doesn't have to render all the pets that have no homes yet at once. Just randomly show 4-5, or maybe a pack just wandering the streets, with their names above their head. Ppl can interact and play with them if they choose or ignore them.
It would provide a bit of user customizable atmosphere. And just because your pet may be roaming around, it doesn't mean you can't pull out our pet and play with it any place else. They just roam around on a route and find a gate players can't go through when they are finished and disappear! Then a new one may spawn. :)
Hmm good question. Referring to my idea, the incubator must be placed in a house in order to use it, so the pet would have to have been hatched in a house. It makes sense that you could put it in your inventory to move it, and it would be just like any other furnishing, you can't use or access it until it is placed back in a house.
Ahh, ok, even still, Yoshi-P said they werent going to add arrows or any ammunition at all because of the redenomination
and because of Bard/Archer abilities are now given the special abilities that arrows would have been given (such as blind, poison etc) so there is no need for more powerful arrows. At this point in the game it would unbalance their battle system most likely.

Ever heard of these? (^_^)

I'd really love to have the pets stay in my house (or INN room) only, wagging their tails when I come back home. Or roaming around my premises later, like the announced garden/park around a personal house.
Also, I don't really like the idea of feeding/taking care of the pet too much, personally I wouldn't want to spend a single gil on that.
Making pets buyable for RL money like in other games is just plain stupid.
Hmm good point, I didn't know they were going to add skills in the game that would add poison arrows, blind etc.. That should be interesting and simpler than having to change your ammo. Nice! lol now we are on the same page! No wonder you was confused by my comment! :D
