    On "Pets"



    So if it wasn't clear before it should be obvious now. We're going to have some sort of crazy pet system. How about a thread on speculation regarding how they'll work and what critters you'd like to see. How they work in other games, how Square might innovate on the old idea and the good and/or bad the type of feature can bring to ARR.

    My money's on eventual moogle companions.

    I want all pets to have access to the same bonuses..that way we don't have everyone with Baby Behemoths because they have the best bonus. Maybe have a tiered levelling system, with say 3 options per tier.

    Tier 1 could be:

    Pet automatically holds all Materia for you.
    Pet has a quiver, holds extra ammo.
    Pet does a trick (Could have 3 useful abilities, but some people would probably like to level up pets just for vanity).

    Final Tier could be things like taking items to a vendor for you, or allowing access to retainer in the field.

    Bonuses would be pet specific, so you could have a different pet for different occasions..
    I'm chilling around town, I want to use my vanity pet with fun abilities (Bomb) VS I'm going to level archer, I want my quiver pet (Behemoth).

    Why this behavior keeps popping on a RPG O.o come on dude if there isn't a worst to best scale on everything ...you're doing it wrong

    You're absolutely right, it's so much better seeing every single person with both the exact same armour and exact same pet -.-

    I think pets can be fun - I hope to see them have some intractable features like feeding / playing or leaving at the house as an actual 'thing' rather then leaving it as a magic pocket of animals lol. So you could have a pen of animals.

    I really hope they dont make main bosses pets though like seeing 'Diablo' as a pet in.. lol

    Finally I hope they can be obtained in a way that explains why they are your pet.

    Definitely.. lol. There must be differences else you will run into scales of gray, lack of choice, lack of matter (substance), and imo a lack of fun.

    This is doing it wrong. You create differences, then you ensure that these differences are desirable. This is very hard to do - but that doesnt excuse taking the lazy way out "everything to be the same".

    Bows have built-in infinite arrows in ARR, it's no longer necessary to carry stacks of arrows. Bow stats are re-calibrated in light of this, so that you'd get the same power as you would from using arrows of the highest possible level for the bow's level (by v1's standards). Since arrows with special effects are removed from the game, these effects will be converted to skills usable with any bow, probably made available around the same level as the arrows they replace, and/or bows with special effects.

    As for throwing weapons, they're supposed to shift from stackable consumables to infinitely reusable single items.

    That's the plan anyway...

    In light of this, you don't need a pet to carry ammo in ARR.

    I kinda think they might be useless beyond being adorable things that will follow you around and possibly copy some of your emotes. I'd love an extra-cute Mandragora.

    Although I don't really care too much about having a monster for a pet, I'd rather Yoshi-P make use of that wasted potential from 1.0, the Path Companion, and allow a player to summon him or her for assistance when needed, like the NPC Fellow players could get in FFXI.

    Monster pets are one thing, but there would be nothing like summoning a roegaydn PGL NPC to your side to help beat up that mob that foolishly decided to pick a fight with you.

    Definitely just looks as Chocobos will already be our battle pals.

    I'm not against pets per se but I'd find it rather annoying to see people running a serious dungeon with a baby behemoth following around. Just looks a bit stupid IMO.
