Err, I'm not sure what you think I'm trying to say with my posting of the dev post. You asked for a dev response, and I reminded you that they already talked about it.
They said that they don't have any plans. 2.0 won't be for another year, so you'd have to wait at least that. Then Direct X 11 support is after that, and even when that's in, there's no guarantee that they'll put in capes.
FYI, the post I quoted and translated is from a JPN thread that asked if we can have capes in the game. Just like this thread.
Like what Rentahamster posted from Foxclon's recent posts, there aren't currently any plans to implement capes due to the high cost to the engine associated with them.
Well I guess that's it for this thread. Time to close up shop! Thanks for clearing that up Bayohne.
It's possible, but still, while you may see some fancy cape physics in a game like Batman, Arkham Assylum, it's just one character on screen. If everyone in town was wearing a cape that had full cape physics, that would be very taxing on your system, directX11 or not. Here's hoping they can find a solution eventually, though.
True that. The reason it works in other mmo's is because their graphics are not nearly as high quality as FFXIV's (hence the flat polygonal squares as capes in WoW). The capes would need to match the HQ level we currently have. I was hoping for part of the solution to be for capes to be exclusive to elite gears like AF armor, thus less people running around with full-on physics flowing capes.
Either way, I'm still very happy with the amount of cloth physics we have presently. It was great to get a response from Bay about it too.
Work it into 2.0. Lots of games have capes without problems, so we're not going to accept "high performance cost" as an excuse."
I can understand how the cost is higher than the average MMO because of the physics effects, but
1) those can be turned off, and
2) the p hysics and graphics engines need a lot of optimization (which they seem to be getting) which should help further.
ya tons of games have capes, doesnt even need to be real physics just animated n we'd be happy lol thats no excuse, i understand for current engine but not for future ons, even 13 has them, same engine no?
I was only expecting the comments like above, when the developers came straight up with their answer with no diddly-daddlying. "It costs money that is already going somewhere else, our budget is limited and not going to raise anytime soon, deal with it."
"oh but but thats no excuse othar gaems have caep physacs omg u so cheap devs"
Lots of games with capes look like CRAP.Quote:

Before we blame SE's "excuse" for not having capes, perhaps you should go and blame these other developers for making shitty looking games with cape physics instead.
Some people act as if there wasn't a trade-off here. "If one game has X feature (but lacks Z,Y,C,S,D,F,W,Q features present here), this game needs to have X feature too!!!1"
If there's the addition of capes, which I don't really feel that the game needs, they need to do it the proper way and not the half assed way. Good cape physics can actually make the visuals even better, and some jobs like for instance paladin has part of their identity in the capes. However, say they implement half assed capes just for the sake of it and it's going to be a terrible addition.
Wow, the white knights reach an all time high with their defense of not having capes. Most MMORPGs coming out now equal FFXIV's graphical quality. FFXIV's graphics are not at some all time new god like level that they are so far beyond implementing a back piece. The simple answer is that the current engine is terrible. Hopefully they readdress this after 2.0.
LOL.
They don't call it "the industry leader in graphics" for no reason.
So, before we get a game that rivals 2.0 in graphics and has cape physics, yes, the game is far beyond implementing a back piece physics.
If 2.0 looks like any other MMO with cape physics, then we do have a case.
They could implement an off-the-shoulder cape like Lightning's cape so it didnt interfere with the weapons which players had equipped, and the animation could be transported to all other races with what I imagine wouldn't be too much effort, relatively speaking.
Im imagining of course that they animate the capes individually rather than leave it up to a physics engine.
if they implement capes they have to consider the possibility, and likelihood of every single person equipping a cape. Given that they're improving the number of players on screen at once, with current hardware and technology it's just not worth the trade off to get capes in.
Any idea if there are future plans to be implementing it into 2.0 with the DX11 engine Bayohne? I know DX9 chokes on this kind of stuff, but DX11 looks like it'll be able to do it and since you're doing an engine overhaul, wouldn't hurt to ask.
Hence my proposal that capes could be an AF armor/elite gear piece. Then we would only see elite players wearing them (which would add to the rarity of the look).
I really liked the previous statement that capes could simply be pre-animated with movement, thus avoiding strain on the physics engine.
^^ Capes sound fun! =D
capes seem kind of tacky. picture everyone and their mom wearing one.
maybe if they were like... level 70.
