The Male Miqo'te situation of Tural (SE forgetting their own lore?)

They still used enough established lore to make male Shetona and female Xbr'aal rare which means the Dawntrail writers are still somewhat paying attention. Male Miqo'te/Mystel/Hhetsarro being rare seems to have been quietly walked back from since Shadowbringers so that's not a new thing. Whether it will ever come up in-game is another thing altogether though.

Male Miqo'te being rare is an artifact of FFXI, which was used as a justification as to why only female Mithra were playable. It was carried over into 1.0 since the devs were uncomfortable with breaking away too much from what made XI successful (this, obviously, ended up being a bad decision).

Then the 2010s roll around, and people are very vocal about not liking being gender-locked into a race. So SE caves and makes male Miqo'te playable, which is a bit awkward lore-wise since you've established "they're rare" and now every city is flooded with them.

Overtime, you figure the playerbase is so acclimated to seeing catmen that you just start throwing them everywhere. Yes, you'll make .0001% of players go "Heyyyy, wait a minute", but that's a small price to pay.

Unlike Eoreza's Keeper of Moon and Seeker of the Sun clans who tend to pretty much kick out all their male Miqo'te for one reason or another. The Turali Miqo'te seem like they don't follow their Eorezan counterparts rules. Koana's late parents being a good example of both a singular male and female Miqo'te getting together to have a child and jointly raise him, rather than one male with a harem of females or a matriarch of women with only one or two males solely there for breeding and borderline slave work.

So, there seemingly being more Turali male Miqo'te around compared to their Eorezan counterparts is more than likely due to a heavy cultural difference and them not feeling the need to spread out as thinly as possible. As with the Seekers of the Sun, with male Miqo'te of their clan. It makes sense as to why you don't see bundles of them together. Most male Seeker clan Miqo'te see eachother as rivals, so they spread out as much as possible to either eventually form their own clans or train to become strong enough to overthrow a Nunth who's possession they have their eye on.

As for the Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te, I can only assume we don't see many of them in Eoreza due to their upbringing basically being used as breeding machines and treated like the help. So they could have become antisocial and so tend to prefer living reclusive lifestyles. Though, that's what I just assume with them.

I don't think that is necessarily "lore-breaking".

Sun Seeker Tias and Moon Keeper males generally being wanderers makes them easy candidates for being adventurers so I think they'd have a higher percentage of representation amongst adventurers than census percentages would otherwise suggest.

Just like how the amount of Viera, Au Ra, and Hrothgar NPCs in Eorzea can be counted on one hand and they're not native to the region, but adventurers of those races would exist since the lore established them being here as displaced mercenaries or refugees and like male Miqo'te, easy adventurers.

There's nothing in the lore about male Moon Keepers being breeding/work slaves. That sounds like fanon made up by players that just as silly as "Miqo'te only live to 45".

In the postmoogle quests, when confronted with the notion of a Moon Keeper King, one of the sisters mentions how unnatural it sounds to have the Couerlclaws revolve around him and how they’re typically wanderers.

“The men of the Keepers of the Moon live a wanderer's life, for they are at their best in small doses. Women and children keep the hearth, ply various trades, and accept game and visits from the menfolk.

But King Poach denies women this gods-given rule over matters of family. He forces women to live with him, forbids them to see their sisters, mothers, aunts. Most unnaturally, they lie with him and him alone!”

Even more conspicuous, there's the family from the caster role quest, with the parents referring to each other as their husband/wife. (Though it's not entirely clear whether they're traditional Hhetsarro or not, as they don't dress like the Mehwahhetsoan group and we don't learn anything about their home beyond that they revere their particular totem.)


Regarding male Keepers, Mikko has already covered most of the lore we have on that, but I'll add that the clan as a whole seems limited to the Twelveswood so there just isn't much opportunity to encounter them. I assume (can't remember if we have a source) that they may tend to be working in the forest as hunters and such.

I made a list of existing characters when I was writing my expanded naming guide for Keepers and the male characters we know about include several squadron members, a Gridanian Hearer, a captain of the Gods' Quiver, a Sharlayan researcher, an adventurer and that guy from the beast tribe capstone quests.

They had to account for the amount of players creating characters of those races, so they tacked on anything they could like "Oh uh...the men are wanderers. Yeah! That's it!" It was not something established from the get-go because they didn't anticipate the need.

The point is, it's a silly move in an MMO to make any gender of a playable race "scarce" in your lore because you either lock yourself out of letting people play as that gender in the future, or you have to write in a bunch of excuses when you make it available. The only reason it was done initially was because you couldn't play as male Mithra (or female Galka), and they wanted to justify that.

I think Leih Aliapoh from the Archer's guild quests mentions how Keepers had a tradition with archery and hunting. Though, I'm going off of things from what I can vaguely remember.

It's also said that one's duties as a nunh might make a leadership role difficult, so they are often separate roles. However every leader of a sun seeker tribe we've ever seen has been a Nunh.

They also say that Keeper Miqo'te prefer to live areas with a clear open view of the moon. Yet they all live in the black shroud, which is named as such because it's shrouded by a canopy trees

As per the wiki which uses Encyclopedia Eorzea as its source:

"The Seekers of the Sun are a highly patriarchal culture, with each tribe centered around a strong breeding male (nunh) whose duty is to form a harem and lead his people to glory and prosperity. Young males are born and raised as "tia," and must either assume the position of nunh by challenging and defeating an existing nunh in single combat, or leave the community to find a harem of his own. In particularly large tribes, multiple nunh may coexist in the same community, though such cases are rare."

So yeah, the Nunh is a sort of leader of the tribe, or well, harem.

The culture of the hhetsarro seems to be different and do seem to generally behave differently from Eorzean seekers, but I'd argue that people from a different continent are bound to have different customs.

I would be careful about quoting the wiki. That may be what the encyclopedia says in the official Miqo'te section, but Averax is right here.

Strongest gets to procreate, and lead the tribe with a vision, ceremonial / hands on leadership, if the tribe is large enough two Nunhs can co-exist I think that happened in the M'tribe. I think in game quests hint at the women being in charge of the day to day leadership. Im pretty sure there is 0 chance that a "tyrant" Nunh can exist.
As its also a thing where the Seekers can just leave and make another tribe with another male.
Keepers send out their males to grow stronger and let them visit the families every now and then in small doses.

But my main point remains, culture aside. Did they forget that males arent born that often and are rare? HASHTAG make lore make sense again.

Oh well there's a more simple answer to that... they lived on different continents from Miqo'te for millenia. It could quite simply be that Hhetsaro don't have that genetic problem. The Mystel of Norvrandt don't seem to have had that problem either, so it's not without precedent.

This is the answer I was looking for. I assumed that it had a lot to do with the fact that the Hhestero are culturally very different. In all fairness, this isn't much different from the Shetoni (sp?) in Tural as well. The way bun men are treated there is wildly different from over in the East.

One note about the EEs as a source: They're the lore books as they were written by scholars within the game, which is how the IRL lore team hand waves things that got retconned or were just flat out wrong in the first book.

That whole sentence reeks of some Sharlayan scholar who asked G'raha Tia and Y'shtola Rhul five questions while writing up his cultural essay for his 5th form class in the Studium, and the other Mi'qo in the lecture hall rolled their eyes because it's so superficial.

Is Y'Rhul Nunh the only male Sunseeker Miqo in all of Sharlayan in canon? I doubt it.

Responding to this like two weeks later, but hay girl it's been forever.

It was fan service coomer bait. In the post-Endwalker era, none of the previously established lore matters anymore. We're in a new era for the modern audience, chuds.

I mean, in the real world, geography absolutely has a factor in genetics. Is it really a stretch to thing that maybe some factor of Tural changes the birth rates?

Or that Eorzean miqo'te, who were once slaves for an empire that absolutely loved genetic engineering, had something altered thousands of years ago to help control population?

ore is meant to support a story, not be some unchangeable dogma or a requirement for any given idea in the story. Sometimes, "Why is X thing the way it is" has a simple answer; the author wanted it to be that way.

Keeping in mind that there area bunch of male Viera in both the Old Sharyan and DT zones, as well as a lot of Female Hrothgar in Tural. I would say they don't care about that anymore.

I will admit I am late to this thread but I was questioning the same thing and found this thread. Keep in mind that the Seekers are a 1:7 Male:Female ratio and Keepers are 1:5 Male:Female ratio. So there is precedence here. I have deep notes on them so I will keep the known migration as brief as I can. They originated in Eorzea as far back as is known, but as the Allagans spread the Miqo'te were treated as a beast tribe and were hunted, enslaved, and otherwise pushed out. They spent the entity of the Third Astral Era running out of Eorzea, across Illisibard, and into Mericidia. As in the entire species. They were then captured in Mericidia and dragged out to Corvos which acted as a labor camp / Laboratory. Some were kept as slaves/pets (*This is G'Raha's back story*) Eventually the empire fell in the Fourth Calamity and the Tribes present in Corvos Established themselves and everyone that the Allagans were keeping there tried to build their own nations, fought and such (in THIS mess, the proto-Garleans marched in declared it Locus Amoenus and tried to build their nation here got their butts kicked and have never forgiven anyone. Solus zos Galvus (Emet-Selch) rose to power partially to "retake Locus Amoenus"...

At some point the group of Miqo'te that would become the Keepers left and sailed to a southern island and built a home. WHEN specifically is not entirely known but as the only Miqo'te in Corvos that didn't go to Eorzea (During the fifth calamity) were the G' they must have left before that. They Migrated to the Shroud from the island during/after the sixth calamity

Given the Hhetsarro are based on the people that migrated to NA from Asia via crossing the land bridge I would assume that they come from either another group that kept going east when the proto-keepers went south, likely reversing the pressures that caused the 1:7 ratio in the seekers to reverse more then it did in the keepers. Either that or they are from a group in Meracydia or Orthard (honestly there is basically no proof the Miqo'te lived in any real numbers in Othard, the few examples we have are orphans) that made their way to Tural the same way, from Othard to Tural during the age of ice.

I wish the Lore spelled the Hhetsarro history out more, and I wish we knew the status of the Miqo'te of Meracydia.

And SE really seems to be stingy on Miqo'te lore in general. A lot of Miqo'te players I know have been begging for more lore. I feel like they just wrote whatever they wanted and ignored the lore, that's why there are so many males. It's kinda clear from their current lore that they just insert what they feel like / think is cool and don't really go for meaningful worldbuilding anymore. Conspiracy theory was that Koji Fox was more into that, but now that he's retired from the position, the care is not there anymore.

They call themselves Hhetsarro, not miqo'te, so just by that cultural semantic you can assume there must be enough historical differences to justify something like population ratio. Pretty much like Shetona do not seem to abide to the common Viera culture as well.

Where is it said that Meracydian Miqo’te were Keepers? According to the Encyclopedia, all Miqo’te in Eorzea today seem to be from Ilsabard and came over when the Sea of Jade froze over in the Fifth Calamity and there’s nothing at all to my knowledge that mentions Miqo’te migration in the Sixth Calamity.

As far as Turali Hhetsarro go, that’s still a mystery that’s not helped by the world’s strange geography. While it’s possible they could have crossed ice bridges over there, the geography and distances are completely different from our own world and sailing is made even more difficult with gigantic waterfalls in the ocean extending far out into the Fathomless Sea. It’s possible that Miqo’te even came from there considering there were a handful of Alexandrian Miqo’te present in Sphene’s flashback centuries before they came to the Source.

But unless we get a sudden lore drop on Tural or Meracydia or a new EE comes out, we simply do not know.

I fully believe it's a retcon.

Miqo'te men in Eorzea were fully meant to be extremely rare compared to females from the start, mostly a leftover from FFXI races being the base for FFXIV's. But when they were added to ARR, uh oh, they cat boys are the most popular male option, and that breaks lore!

What now? We can't FORCE players to change and people clearly love these guys, and everyone is okay with tons of cute cat girls, too, so let's just put more in the game. And "clarify" what a Nuhn is later. (Alphinuad wondering why G'raha doesn't take the Nuhn name considering how he basically rules over the Crystal Tower).

Yup. I feel like that got the "Consultant" treatment.

The New World attire was heavily Native American-coded. Too "problematic and sterotypical", had to go.

Mamool Ja speaking broken English was too "noble savage-coded", had to go. (The whole lore snippet about that being "an act that they ALL put on" is insultingly preposterous, too)

The ceruleum was a clear parallel to oil. Might make people "uncomfortable" - or accidentally glorify colonialism, industrialism, and land theft - instead of being a thoughtful subject to explore, had to go.

Blue Magic was too "Mystical Native American Spirit Animal Crap", had to go.

Gun violence bad, so "Rubber bullets".

There's clearly a "Manifest Destiny"-shaped hole in Tural.
In typical modern fashion, we can't examine the topic like adults, we have to just accept an almost childish "Bad Thing Bad" viewpoint, or worse, pretend it never happened at all and learn NOTHING.

It's wild since these subjects leading into the Alexandria arc would've been a perfect midpoint since Alexandria is literally an invading kingdom that assimilates hundreds of Turali people into their culture.

They're just *so happy* to be there, living outside the city, on farms, after abandoning so many of their old towns. Heritage Found is the most bizarrely stale area in the game despite being pretty horrifying. But also many started families and live comfortably with native Alexandrians. But then you have Oblivion being run by a Turali historian and naturalist who is very much against the cultural order of Alexandria.

The 'beast tribe feigning pidgin english' rather than it being a linguistic product of how their language is structured really reframes (unflatteringly) those beast tribe quests. An honoured friend...yet won't even drop the act around the Warrior of Light who has taken pains to assist them with their various woes. :(

Might want to double check your lore a touch. It is everywhere in game in the shroud quests and in EE that the Miqo'te arrived in the shroud after the flood, (The Keepers) EE speaks they came from an Isle in the South Seas like AloAlo (Not specifically there)

Might also want to re read what I posted, At no point did I say that Keeper Miqo'te came from Meracydia. The Modern Miqo'te in Eorzea are descended from Miqo'te in Corvos, One group left and lived on an island, most of the rest migrated out in the age of ice (5th calamity). During the flood (6th calamity) the ones living on an island migrated to escape the water and ended up in the shroud.
