Regional Servers? (Opinions please)

Who said that global is only toward Japan? It's a dang shame how people like to single out some country because of something like "JP Onry" I've partied with many of Japanese people and I haven't gotten any problems ever with them. =/ I don't see how wanting something global meaning like Australia or etc makes people weaboos, I mean that's very specific on what you thought "global" is (Not trying to start a flame war would like to keep this a clean thread) It's just really harsh just to single out one country =/

If they did it right they could have physical regional servers but then global logical servers. Then say Aegis is actually made up of two physical computer clusters one sitting in a datacenter in Japan then one in Los Angeles. Clients connect to the server they are closest to then SE has a very fast dedicated line from datacenter to datacenter to connect the two clusters and have them operate as one game world.

If it is true that this game is supposed to give PvP content that isn't "lacking" like other FF mmos (pretty much FFXI), then yes. I'm sorry but the complaints would be too often that it would be a bad idea not to do so.

At the very least they can just create regional servers and then global servers.

I am for regional servers. Those people that say that they won't be able to find people at X time of the day are forgetting one thing: Cross Server Group Finder.

Short Answer: No.

Long Answer: I would rather put up with extra latency then be on a regional server and have no one to play with. Yay, 50ms ping time... I wish someone else was on..... No. The experiment with Ragnarok already caused a lot of problems. Their server is quiet most of the time (good luck to someone there trying to play during non-peak hours). And it removed a fair bit of EU people from non-EU servers (making the EU population on those servers even less).

Regional Servers means Peak-Hour Servers, means if you are not playing during peak hours do not bother to play. Me, I'm here to play. Not complain about ping times. (FYI: I'm one of those people with bad ping times yet I still would not ask for regional servers).

Playing the menu is not fun. if you find it fun. you should not be playing ANY Massively multiplayer online role-playing game

I support regional if and only if the servers are hosted in the region that they're being regional for.

I prefer global servers myself, I have many friends located all around the world but I would give it up for the lower ping. Especially if PvP is coming.

Just make Regional / Global servers an option to players to choose and don't region lock the servers.

But just because theirs a "regional server" doesn't mean you can't go there unless it's IP/Region locked and even then theirs ways of getting around that.
I strongly disagree to region locking.

+1 to Cross Server Finder for those of your worried about finding a group at XXX time.

As for friends being scattered I'm sure they'll tell us ahead of time. If your more concerned about being with your friends than your ping I'm sure you'll choose their server over a lower ping and vice versa if your more worried about your ping.

I like the idea that I can play with Australia and Asia time people most of the time, then the European on the evening and the USA if I play super late or in the morning. Allows you to always find people to play with.

For the "Japan onry" well it's not that they don't want to play with you or are racist or anything, they just can't communicate with you out of the auto-system function which is limited. Might be ok for leveling parties but if need some strategy that they can't explain they won't bother. and you would do the same!

I am sure NAs also wants to do Garuda with players that doesn't speak english. Oh wait.. you don't, we just expect people to speaks english.

It would be better hands down but the problem is the company isn't going to want to spend the money to put up or pay for new servers for each region also if 2.0 does fix majority of the latency issues then all is fair game. Though honestly I do wish our servers were based in the US.

Sorry to burst your bubble but most people in EU timezones have work from 9-5pm everyday and play on weekends. All global servers do is allow people to consume their lives in a game because there is no "down time" since moving to ragnarok I have found play/life balance which works very well for me as im sure others in the EU have.

We are no longer forced to do endgame at stupid o clock because thats prime time US or JP.

It is very refreshing and I say bring on regional servers

the last thing this game needs is a fractured community, besides regional servers are a step backwards global gaming is the future.

I enjoy the EU server a lot, there's so much going on during the time I'm online and since there are quite a few NA shells too I even have people to do stuff with after normal EU prime time (like at 2-6 am).
I understand however that people like Tonkra with non-regular working hours (like working in the evening and having time to play in the morning) have a hard time finding groups to do content with.

Something else I enjoy about Ragnarok though is how many different nationalities are present :o
It feels way more international than the "international" server we were on before which mainly had NA and German players and nothing else.
If regional servers went the way of JP, NA, FR, DE and "the rest" I'm not sure if I wanted to pick my according server because if that happened, I'd really only be playing with people from my country which would be a bit boring :/

Am I missing something here? As far as I understood Ragnarok was a preferred EU server, I still see JP and US players on the server, not as many thought but still, does this then validate as EU server? (This is in regards to people calling Ragnarok an EU server)

I prefer Global servers.

I had a great time meeting foreign friends and adventuring with people whom I solely relied on auto-trans to communicate.

Ragnarok is the recommended EU timezone server.

Exactly what I said preferred EU, and as the server is still in Japan and there are still US and JP players I think calling it EU server just isn't right.

FFXIV and FFXI are the only games I know of that allow me to play with people across the globe, if they were segregated to their own servers, then I'd no doubt, quit.

any possibility of minor latency relief is severely outweighed by loss of worldwide community. I would much rather deal with the latency.

And i'm 100% sure that international ones will coesist. So i don't see where is the problem. ;)

To answer OP's question, probably. I don't really mind much one way or the other but I would slightly prefer having regional servers. I never understood why the servers are the way they are anyway, in FFXI too. However, if it helps out connections to be faster or something then I'd be all for it. Sorry for my ignorance if that doesn't make sense. I know nothing about how servers work.

If they are going to keep us stuck on servers with people who don't speak our language, they could at least do away with the auto translate and add a full translation function like any of the many free online translator sites have.

God damnit people. This isn't about "I wanna have jp's on my server who i will never play with!". This is about the goddamn latency issue that will still be there once 2.0 hits should the servers stay in japan.

Yoshi wants the WoW audience. Should he fail to deliver the same experience WoW gives (gameplay wise), the game will bomb a second time. And the combat NEEDS to be fluent.

this not being a FPS then the normal latency we should come to expect in 2.0 shouldn't have an effect on game play.

As for regional servers even though I do not play with a lot of JP folks I would hate to loose contact with all my EU friends so no thanks.

Yes Please! I want regional servers that are located in my continent! If I have to leave some people behind that just "have" to stay international, then so be it. Ive already told my LS that if they offer this then our LS will be hopping to NA. There were some people that didnt like this idea, and I told them no hard feelings, do what you gotta do.

You mean we aren't all special snowflakes?

Stay global. Many players in my ls are either EU or AUS. Its always nice always having people on at different times.

I play in a JP party at least, on average, once a week. it's an excellent way to keep up on my japanese. so not all of us are in the boat 'will never play with JPs' I've started to get a decent reputation with a few LSs on JP side so i'd prefer not to have regional servers. although I understand the merit of it. I also don't think the populations of certain regions are large enough to support a server.

i can deal with latency. it's a bit annoying, sure. but unless the issue persists past 2.0 launch i'm not going to worry about it. I dealt with it for years playing FFXI. JP claimers always had a bit of an edge due to lower latency on spawns.

As I remember when it was designated the EU recommended server, all the EU players ran as far as they could in the opposite direction.
I ended up on Ragnarok anyway as my initial relocation to Aegis didn't work out. A decent mix of EU, JP, NA players here anyway.
