Please remake 1.0 in New Game+

I’m also tired of people saying how bad it was. It was actually really good in a lot of ways, especially when 1.14 brought the job system.

The bad was that you needed a PC that could handle it, maps were redundant and didn’t have landmarks or notable locations, released early, oceans of retainers, and lots of inconsistencies and bugs early on and no driving content was prepared. The style of the gameplay was actually quite fun to me, your characters had weight so the realm in some ways felt more immersive. Instead of not having belts, the belts were actually visible equipment. Back then I actually made friends and cared about grouping. Since ARR I have been NOTHING but solo and lonely. If the engine wasn’t so difficult to work with I would have preferred we stayed in that system, but I’m also happy and thankful with what we have today. There’s alot bad to say about 1.0 but honestly there is a ton of good to say about it too. One of the touches that i liked back then was the unique animations when equipping a job stone like I’m a Power Ranger, they cut that out in ARR instead we just flash and change gear.

Also I absolutely love how in these 1.0 topics people who claim to have been there keep bringing up fallacies regurgitated and repeated by people who weren't there to begin with. It's like the ET caused the video game crash of 83 all over again, but FFXIV 1.0 edition. There were a lot of things wrong with 1.0, but don't just blindly parrot Yoshida's one comment in an interview, completely out of context, or make up reasons when there are plenty legit ones to be had, and even a few things the game did better than it does now.

The reason Yoshida said it'd be a Nightmare has more to do with the fact they don't have 1.0 or even 1.23's version files and source as they used to be just lying around, the fact most of the 1.0 staff is gone which made and would make documentation a ginormous pain, all this for a version of XIV that was never going to (and wouldn't if brought back) appeal to a post WoW era player audience. And the risk of giving the wrong image for players who would go into the hypothetical classic server and judge XIV based on it instead of the newer version. There was also the concern of players who would fail to understand the circumstances would blame the dev team for the legacy bugs, performance and design problems.
Furthermore very few producers understand the appeal of game preservation. There are always some niche audience that wishes they had access to older versions of games. Offline or online. But with online games the unfortunate reality is that most of the time that's at the complete mercy of the publisher, hence why you get multiple topics like this one asking for either a "classic" server or a recreation of cutscenes or playable form of it. And it's a shame even when they have no intention of doing anything at all with it they won't even leave it to others to do the work.

How about a Final Fantasy 1.0 OFFLINE version?.


I would love to play the original game but understand is not feasible to bring it back "online", however, a normal offline Final Fantasy version of 1.0 could be done, of course it would have to be adjusted for a single player experience which might be difficult but if they decided to, it might produce SE more money from the depths of hell where the game must be now.

Well its certainly possible, they did make a offline version of Dragon Quest X recently (though I really can't stand the chibi look).

Aside from the people being purposely obtuse and/or vomiting up the word nightmare...

This is something entirely possible over the course of an expansion as a side project just like many additions through the years have been. They don't have recreate the scenes/animations/cinematography 1:1, just give ARR-style versions with the emotes and waist-up rotation-walking (since turning animations were uncommon then) and condense it into a maybe 2 hour (tops) greatest hits style of story beats that culminates in a solo trial against Nael on Rivenroad and then auto-plays the ARR intro that we know so well.

And they've a myriad of setpieces and zone sections that can be used to approximate the locations in 1.0 with the exception of some extremely notable spots near the end. And as for them taking all the lore that still suitably fits into ARR, that includes the 1.0 MSQ. Non of that is non-canon so it's not like they'd have to explain some weird story oddity that has been left behind or retconned, and the only real lore hiccup would be if you aren't a Legacy character that defeated Nael originally but did so in NG+ and they still refer to the WoLs as someone else instead of the wink and nod those subset of Legacy players got.

This is 100% exactly what I have been trying to convey. And I’m willing to bet, the more time goes after Endwalker, the more other people will be on board with this idea. If you’re a 1.0 player and didn’t reflect on everything that’s happened after clearing the story, you’d have to be asleep at the wheel or just not that invested to care. As soon as I was done with Endwalker I wanted to go back to the beginning (ARR? No I said the beginning, 1.0) Watching those scenes with what we know now, thing’s like Othard, Bozja we’re long since mentioned. Or the distinction between Hydaelyn’s role versus The Twelve, in that they had little to do with each-other but the people know so little about the Echo they just weren’t sure who blessed them with it. Plus like, How many times have we gotten side projects I don’t think anyone particularly even asked for but they went all out on [looking at you Performance and Hildebrand].

I'm perfectly ok with 1.0 being this time in history that I can only open up an ancient tome and read about (or look up videos on youtube). 1.0 is like a cult classic that you just don't touch despite having better technology; it can't capture the essence of 1.0 that now exists as nostalgia for the players that went through it.

If they were going to put in the effort to have us live through another part of Eorzea's history, I would rather them go back further. Way back. Prior to the 3rd calamity and in Meracydia during the days the real Bahamut was alive. If there is anything I would love to see expanded upon, it would involve Midgarsormr and the first brood and I highly doubt I am the only one.

You know the cutscenes are rendered in real-time meaning the world you see in the CS is the world you see when playing .. and the world of 1.0 no longer exists and was built in an engine long consigned to where it belonged, the grave of failed software, so there's no way to render the 1.0 CSes as they were seen by us at the time.

As much as I'd like to experience the 1.0 story myself, there's really not all that much we're missing from not having it. I've watched the whole thing from a Gridanian perspective on Youtube, and let me tell you, the world is very different. The calamity reshaped Eorzea, so much so it's a plot point in ARR.

It can't be recreated with a new story+, as the zones are different throughout the world. To experience it we'd essentially need an expansion for it. And I'm not sure I see a point to that, as much as I'd like to play a version of it where things played well.

The unfortunte truth is that while the story beats are cool, the gameplay strangled it.

Running out of anima and being unable to use an aetheryte, having to walk across half the Black Shroud, getting lost, getting killed by random overworld mobs that were legitimately a threat, having to start over walking through the Black Shroud a second time...

Honestly, my personal feel of 1.x was that it was a lot of really interesting ideas that never quite gelled into a cohesive, functional whole. Like, the idea of renting market stalls? Kind of cool. The actual implementation of it? That made me want to scream any time I needed to go buy something. The idea of teleportation being something that depleted your own aether enough that it became dangerous (or impossible) after doing it too often, until your anima replenished? Really neat, from a lore perspective, and made the distances you needed to cross in the world meaningful. In practice? Well... see my ranty bit about the Black Shroud.

So it felt to me like a lot of "huh, that's a neat idea" combined with constant low-grade frustrations with the actual implementation of said ideas. And for many people—including, eventually, me—it seems the frustrations eventually came to outweigh the "huh, that's a neat idea" factor.

The things that made 1.x interesting weren't in the story, generally, but rather all the weird systems; for all the flawed systems, the game was very good at generating experiences. Many of those experiences were born of frustration and trying to find ways around it (muttermutter Black Shroud mutter), but they were memorable nonetheless. But that all? I feel like that's something you can't recapture without literally recreating the old game.

I feel like it's worth pointing out that in 1.x, unless I am wildly misremembering things, the Echo literally let you travel through time into the past on two occasions. Not just perceive the past, but literally interact with things, and physically bring objects back to the present. While not explicitly retconned, it's sure been swept under the rug and ignored, and time-travel since then has been treated as a much more complicated prospect.

Alot of people are giving dumb answers in this thread. The op is asking for the story to be implemented in current final fantasy xiv,not the game mechanics. We should all want this.

1.0 was brilliant, technical issues aside. Anyone who says otherwise is a coward!

There is a good amount of story/lore disconnect, granted, but tbh this is a created fantasy world and a good writer would be able to work it together with a bit of effort.

That flavor even made it into ARR actually! If you remember the scene where we handed Cid his goggles which confused many a lore forum poster at the time and is still brought up from time to time. The Echo has never been us actually going into the physical past but we were definitely interacting with people's memories in funky ways.

Eh it was confirmed by ferne that during 1.0 we did go to the past but we weren't doing a butterfly effect. It's how in the 30 alchemist quest we brought the elixir that we had made in the echo by someone to the kid that kept passing out and then the flower we got from the Gobbue in the Flowers for All intro for 1.0 Ul'dah..

I got the opposite from that explanation, could you find me the link so I could read it myself again (been years) and if I'm wrong so be it. Wasn't the flower just a game mechanic thing?

I get where you're coming from, the amount the calamity and events of 1.0 are referenced in ARR but you can never experience them has been something I've felt like I've missed out on once or twice but it's really not something that's worth their time to do and should be obvious that they don't want to/can't be bothered to do. Just look at what they did to 'fix' ARR. They removed about 30 quests from the post patches story, I'm not sure how many from the levelling process, made the Crystal Tower raids mandatory and called it a day. There are exclusive cutscenes in the game for players that played 1.0 and I already feel like those are a waste of dev time. You'd be surprised how few people would bother to go and pay them any heed.

Perhaps they could make a condensed version where they mash together some 1.0 cutscenes and put it on YouTube but realistically that would be the most you'd get.

Reading it again and I'm still not seeing confirmation that it is in fact time travel as in the actual act of physically teleporting backwards in time. I see the contention over the flintlock and the question of bringing items INTO echo memories and that's definitely a sticking point and seems to have not yet been answered.

Those two entries put under conflicting information ("...experience the past, interact with it, but ultimately not change the outcome of anything important..." versus "You will be there in their memories, seeing things as they saw them. You may even interact with that which lies therein. However, the past is like a stone tablet. You cannot uncarve what is already written.") are saying the same thing unless you hang on Koji not using the word memory in his explanation.

But putting that aside, and getting back to the original comment that spurred this discussion, they wouldn't have to portray the Echo as they did in 1.0 (where it was presented in a jumbled interpretive narrative mess at the time) and just have it work cleanly like it does now. After all, how many of those sidequests are important to the throughline of Dalamud and the Calamity which is what I would expect a remaking of that time period to be.

Loving this discussion by the way, it's a nice change from the usual fare here

Pick one. It’s either a patch or an expansion worth of work, not both. MSQ is done, fetch quests are redundant. There is no better time than now.

Doubt it would ever happen but I would love 1.0 servers with current systems and add one raid I bet it would be a HUGE hit hell I'd even play it as a solo player game with some changes

LOL, it wouldn't be 1.0 with current systems then. You are asking for 2.0, which already exists :p


1.0s story, was like 7 or 8 quests, followed by the GC story, which was the lead up to the battle of cartenaeu.

There wasn't really that much there. Most of our current patches have more story.

Why waste time and recourses remaking something bad, when you can make something good instead.

Yeah, the (as I have called it before) "Very Unfortunate Goobbue Incident" in Ul'dah took place 10 years prior to 1.x starting, date-wise, but also functioned as the Ul'dah opening storyline; if I remember right, you looked up, saw a meteor shower, heard Hydaelyn speak and immediately went FLOOP back 10 years in time and didn't even initially realize you had jumped back in time, just sort of went "Oh hey, there's a parade going on?"

(I did start in Ul'dah in 1.x, but it's been, y'know, a decade, so I may be misremembering some of the details.)

While I don't think they've outright retconned (or contradicted) any of the weird stuff the Echo allowed in 1.x, they sure also haven't gone back to touch on it; they've kept the Echo to a much more narrowly-defined powerset in A Realm Reborn and onwards. And I do think if you had the 1.x storyline accessible in the current game somehow (impractical as I believe that to be), you'd have a lot of questions about the Echo arise. Especially for anyone whose 1.x re-enactment began in Ul'dah.

You know, it's been so long since I played through that piece of story I had completely forgotten about that. But you're right, there is at least one instance of us doing this same sort of Echo-powered shenanigan even post-ARR.

I dig the idea. Would be doubly-awesome if playing through its entirety could award you the "Legacy" mark, chocobo, and old goobbue mount. I mention these, specifically because most "retired" items often make their way back into the game periodically, and it seems like it could be kind of fitting to do so there.

Regardless, it would also be cool, getting a better sense of context for the events preceding ARR. Which characters we should know, better understanding of the characters and their motivations, etc.

I wouldn't mind where people could see the stuff in the game from 1.0, maybe in the inn rom. But, honestly there wasn't a lot to start with and it was also very confusing in the beginning - at times we didn't realize we were actually in an echo for example. The story picked up towards the end of 1.0 because Yoshi-P & SE were building out the story so they could blow the game up for 2.0 - the calamity and all.

I know a lot of people who didn't play 1.0, and especially now with EW, really wish they had. And I completely get that. I'm glad I was there from the beginning and it's really special to see the whole arc come to a finish. At the same time, a lot of what made 1.0 special, and especially at the end of the game, was the fact we there together experiencing something in the moment that had not been done before. Ending of a game so it could be reborn. We didn't know if it would work. We didn't know how they were going to do it exactly. And the moment the CS started and we got to watch that and then the servers closed - it was moving. That feeling can't be replicated by putting it in the game now. BUT that said, I did enjoy 1.0 at the end and I wouldn't mind if they were able to put the cut scenes of the story in the game somewhere. At the same time I don't know that it would really mean any more to people who weren't there in the beginning to see it in the game as opposed to watching all the cut scenes on youtube. And that again, is just because it wouldn't replicate how it felt to be there and experience it first hand. If that's not what people are hoping to accomplish then yea I agree, if SE could get it into the game somehow that would be cool.

I read on the FF wiki that there are some echo-time travel shenanigans involved in the Gridania story too. With Khrimm and the Hermet of the woods being one and the same. I wonder if that's true of the Limsa Lominsa story...

This seems very apt.

Makes me wonder if the two who introcudeced the PC to the Path of the Twelve for Gridania and Limsa, Khrimm and Blackburn respectivelly, had bigger roles intented for them before, well, Yoshi-P took over and moved the story in another direction.

I think we can honestly say, we just don't know how much work it would be. I'm leaning towards the Expansion side myself. And we just don't know what the devs have on their plate. Either way, it would be a lot of work, on top of building up to the next expansion/'season 2' of FFXIV

Once upon a time there was a private server that hosted 1.0. I don't think it still exists. I think searching for something like that would be your best bet. As a Legacy player also, I do miss my time in 1.0, but I don't think it would work. If memory serves, in 1.0 each city state was one massive zone with no load screens. So Ul Dah and all of Thanalan could be explored without a load screen. Archer had to craft his own arrows. Crafting was affected by the phases of the moon. You could wear underwear. 1.0 is effectively now so different that to implement it would be like implementing an entire new expansion-- but with old content. I don't think it would be worth it.

However, I do miss it. I would be interested in finding a 1.0 server. I wonder where I should start looking?

Eh, I don't know how people usually think "New Game+ for 1.0" = relaunch of the FF14 1.0 where was a nightmare in terms of gameplay and enjoyability. I mean, it that happens, it would be likely just FF14 2.0 but your character sorely running 1.0 scenario quests.


Though I guess it is not possible cuz 2.0's geographic elements are vastly different compared to 1.0's. Like, you would have a greener Black Shroud cuz Elementals were still strong enough to ward off Ixal, who arrived in 2.0 due to weakened Elementals' power post-Bahamut. Or, Coerthas Highlands are still green with with grass and had settlement here and there compared to the frozen wasteland post-Bahamut. Basically, SE would have to redesign 1.0 areas into instances to cater 2.0 gameplay, and it doesn't sound exactly profitable vs time-efforts.
