Exactly. While on the topic, it does seems that FFXI players get really no love in FFXI : (
How I miss the huge open areas full of dangerous monsters that could only be killed by a focused small party... I really do.
No. Glamour magic is used as part of the story and I prefer my intended fashion to be shown to ppl, whether they like it or not.
If it were being done to save graphic processing on old PCs, then it would probably just render everyone in their racial gear, because loading one set per character model would be a lot easier than piecing together whatever menagerie of parts they're actually wearing. (It should also be a sign to upgrade your PC, even a bargain-model prebuilt gaming PC from Best Buy should have no problem running the game, but I digress.) How immersion-breaking would be it be to see everyone in the exact same generic gear at all times?
Yeah or the artifact gear of the job they're on for the level bracket they're at. If I look at a level 80 PLD, I should see the PLD AF4 on them. If I look at a level 65 AST, then they're in the AF2. Substitute hall of the novice gear or, say, the Brayflox gear for people below level 50, and whatever crafted gear is in the chests for the HW jobs that don't have level 50 sets. Or, heck, whatever armor they want to use for it that's a complete set that's appropriate to a level range. That both adds a distinct identifier for visually distinguishing members of different jobs (the exact thing that they keep the glamour system limited for) and might actually mean you get to see those armor sets in the wild more than once a year.
I was just about to say, put everyone in the AF1 gear since the OP is citing older games that generally have characters of a given class always wearing XIV's AF1 stuff.
I 100% disagree with any and all modding at all and disagree with the idea of using even a client-side mod to change the way people appear in the game. I also disagree with the notion that it's ok for players to force others to see their glamours simply because they put a lot of time and effort into creating a specific look. I'd be all for an official game UI function that put all players in a standard outfit from that specific players' POV. If a specific player doesn't want to see glamours, fine, let them hit the toggle. If a specific player wants to see other peoples' glamours, fine, let them not hit the toggle.
I personally prefer more "traditional" glamours that fit into the overall aesthetic of the NPC populations and not the rare exceptional NPCs like Godbert or the dude in the gold pig suit in Idylshire. That being said, XIV isn't a "lore game" in the same veins as an Elder Scrolls title where immersion is a significant deal. This is an MMO and the developers more likely than not are thinking of it as a *game* not an immersive world experience like Elder Scrolls. Being a "only a game", it's not surprising that we're allowed to glamour outfits that reflect anime and manga where it's common to have protagonists in school uniforms, maid outfits, tuxedos, and kimono swinging around gigantic weapons and taking hits that would rip a person in half completely in stride.
We're all probably happier by thinking of the game as an immersive anime with a wide variety of cultural aesthetics and weird stuff than a World Building game like Morrowind or Skyrim.
Not really what a tank should wear at all. No plate, just cloth, mail, and leather. Horrible head protection. Also lacking a coat of arms, how are they supposed to stand out enough that people know who to follow?? No this getup is better for a poor man at arms playing support than a tank on the frontline.
Personally I can't compare ESO with FF at all. If people would just expand their thinking a bit. There are all kinds of fantasy worlds created in a person's mind. I just watched the golden compass movie again. That is a totally different world but it's still fantasy. This game is not a traditional fantasy so why would you try to make it that way. ESO is more traditional except all of the loud flaming store mounts they put out. But they know what sells and have raised prices accordingly. So I can't compare this game with ESO at all. As far as glamour people do those to show off their taste and I feel weather you like them or not they should be visible to all. Chocobos are a creature in this game finding someone in a chocobos suit is not out of the realm of possibility. Expand your fantasy mind this is not king Arthur and dragons. It's not table top dnd either. Exactly what you say in your last paragraph is how people must think of this then build their immersion around that.
the instant solution to this would be to just close your eyes
I get this idea is long shot and generally a waste of development resources. That point aside I don't understand the position that having someone alter another's appearance especially when outside of a few outlier situations the persons who appearance has been altered would not even know.
I mean so do not get me wrong I love walking around IRL in one of my extensive hentai hoodies. Though if someone developed the tech to alter appearance of others only to themselves. I would personally not care I still would gain enjoyment wearing what I enjoy.
So here is the thing about immersion. I got back and forth a lot with this issue. Because to some extent both sides have their merit. It is nice to feel fully immersed in an "Epoch" where the story is taken seriously and people show up for battle well prepared and a great battle is had. By the other token FFXIV is more "Fairy Tail" anime than say... "Attack on Titan" where uniforms are well defined and everyone is dressed congruently to the setting.
At the same time, when we talk about "world" and immersion, if we take a look at our world today we have people in space and conducting genetic research and creating clones all the way to aboriginal tribes that have no contact with the world and live the same as when Neanderthals were still around... (an easy research on this is that Island close to India)
So FFXIV reflects a bit more of that reality, that the world at large is a truly diverse place... On the other hand though... These diversities are spread across bigger geographic areas in the world, whereas in FFXIV everyone is squished together. So you get a guy in a swimsuit queued with you in full plate armor ready to battle hades...
I mean yeah... I would say getting a bunch of frogs, swimsuits, and joke glams in an expansion finale trial does ruin the experience somewhat. Because you can't seriously get into it... I mean everyone is treating it as a joke... and you feel silly wearing good armor to battel with a bunch of those people.
If this world had more things to do outside of instances a great solution would be to create "Casual Gear" and "Battle gear" and have those respective plates, where you as a Miqote WAR, could wear something sexy and casual while doing activities in the overworld (unfortunately these are severely lacking), queue for a fight, and switch to your battle plate when you load in. That way, all your cute glams would be there for you and would have a use most of the time, but when things get serious, you transform into a glam that means business...
This would require the developers to only allow specific gear to be battle plated, and would get treated on a per-item basis.
I think people would mostly be okay with this solution, I mean its a reasonable compromise, but ONLY, if there are lots of things to do in the overworld that would make casual gear something you can use and show off plenty....
A great waste of development resources. It's never as simple as 'adding a button to activate a switch'. There would be side effects.
How does one go about changing glamour gear into X? The simplest way would be to replace every piece of gear into some 'standardized head, chest, hands, legs, feet' gear. What happens when that gear is worn by an NPC? (Yes, your NPCs wear the same gear you can glamour into).
Not so simple anymore. And the "while you're at it" crowd asking for level-specific gear ... sheesh.
Why stop at gear?Quote:
That point aside I don't understand the position that having someone alter another's appearance especially when outside of a few outlier situations the persons who appearance has been altered would not even know.
I'll certainly start complaining about all of the Hrothgar in game. I'll demand a button/switch to toggle all Hrothgar to look like a single Miqo'te female model. It's an appearance that only affects my screen. How could it possibly harm anyone else?
It would also be a lot simpler than the gear toggle, well, except it would also have side effects with respect to NPCs.
Your identity is tied to your appearance. People work a long time when creating a character to get the look "just right". It's Who They Are in-game.
Asking for the ability to change appearances is denying someone else has a right to exist As They Are.
You want a game where you have full control over the look and feel of everyone? Go play the Sims.
1. Golden Compass is a great example; it's a "real world" setting with fantastical elements. That's how I see FF to be in a manner of speaking. There are different cultures based on different time periods and technology levels with the added fantastical elements of magic and ultra-high technology. It's exactly those elements that push XIV's world past the boundaries of Real World Earth into this crazy mish-mash of conflicting milieus that is our beloved Eorzea.
2. You're 100% right here, ESO and FF are two wildly divergent games/aesthetics, to the point where there's really no comparison between the two. The folks who make the Elder Scrolls titles do seem to try to maintain consistency of aesthetics/technology levels between the games and make a serious effort at creating a world that draws the player into in a way that XIV simply doesn't. Tamriel is much more realistic within its creative boundaries than Eorzea is within its own boundaries. I'd say both have equal verisimilitude but are not equally immersive.
3. I agree, the default setting should be that glamours are visible to everyone, as it is now. I don't think it would be a bad thing to have an official option of displaying all PCs in their racial starter gear or AF1 gear appropriate for the job they're on at the time though. I generally like to see other people in their glamours as it adds to my Isekai head cannon, but even then the 1000th Miquote in the Nier raid gear or Broegadyn in a subligar gets tiresome sometimes.
I love Nine Inch Nails, but sometimes I just want to listen to Bach instead.
So, let's see...
1. There's a mod that removes lalafell from the game.
2. There's a mod that removes (swaps) the 2B leggings...
3. There's a mod that can freely change the race and outfits of other players as they're displayed to you.
Seems to me someone just needs to link these things together. I'd suggest this idea remain a mod, however. No need to get the dev team embroiled in controversy by implementing it, and every time they make a change, and then worry about it getting dropped if they feel it's not worth the time and return. Not to mention, as a fan project you could have things like a database of immersive outfits to apply to other players at random, which would likely be too much time investment/upkeep for an official dev project.
You are right why stop at gear if someone does not want to see lalafell on their screen I would not be bothered in the slightest. In the end I get it would be a waste and never said or implied it would be a simple toggle. I get that stance the stance I do not get it is why people feel that their existance and experience would be negatively impacted due to the mere possibly that the entire playerbase would have the ability to readily and reliably alter the appearance of others.
People are more or less getting upset that someome random person may not see their drip or style. Seems werid to me that is all, and no one has really come up with a reason that makes sense to me as to why the mere possibly of someone altering their appearance especially in a video game would have a negative impact.
Thing is one would not really know outside if outlier situations. I do not think we would stop existing as we are due to the underlined possibly that someone may not see us as a we are.
Though on my end I do have a working though albit buggy version of a mod that puts everyone in a black robe. It is not extremely difficult per-se more so time consuming for very little reward in the end on a large scale.
Glamour denyers?! Hiddemup~
Honestly tho, just why? You know full well you're in anime world.
Stop pretending! ^^
This game, just like every good Final Fantasy, started and for a long time was a what you call "lore game", and just like FFXI before it. I would love for this game to be more like ESO in many aspects as well. Immersion is important in any game, specially in RPGs. It saddens me to see the developers seem to care for kids, teenagers and not adults and mature players that want a more immersive experience and that actually value the ingame lore, world and story, and want things to coherent and more "in tune" and not all "wacky" and over the top non stop all the time.
World building is one of if not the very most important thing besides gameplay in any RPG, and basically is one of the main factors that dictates the quality of an RPG, that's why people love FF Tactics, FF9, FFXI, EQ1, etc.: world building, make a fantasy world actually believable. That's one of the major things that separate good RPGs from bad RPGs.
How dare you try to warp immersion. The option to see what you want to see ruins my immersion how is that?
The very thought that the developers making the game story, and design of armor and clothing, that your immersion is that over the game lore, and developers design is not only laughable, but also is false.
This is final fantasy. Get use to it.
But the ff14 world is and has always been wacky. Godbert and Hildibrand have been part of the game for a long time. Clothing in a modern aesthetic make sense because of influences from allag and garlemald. Seasonal events have some main story characters run around in a chicken suit. A fantasy world is not just doom and gloom all the time. Casting glamours has been part of the story. You'd be breaking game lore if you removed glams from everyone if anything.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I get what you mean honestly, I think what you're looking for is an aesthetic cohesion or something similar. 1.0 and FFXI shared a similar style in armor and world with both feeling very grounded in their fantasy elements, and that made the outlandish stuff (Garleans and Zilart) feel otherworldly or exotic just for how outside the established aesthetic of the world they were. And it made them more special for it in my opinion. So while yes everything that seems out of place in XIV has been given lore reasons for existing I can agree that for some folks it can be jarring or at least incongruous.
Do the Regalia, 2018-esque Japanese fashion, Korean historical outfits, mascot outfits, cartoon character minions, jets, and cyborgs exist canonically in-universe? Yes. Can they still be considered weird by people expecting a more traditional fantasy aesthetic regardless? Absolutely.
And yeah I know FF has long been mixing fantasy and sci-fi elements in their games but I argue that they did a better job of blending them and/or making the reason for them being so mismatched a lot better. Not that it bothers me at the end of the day, it tickles me to no end that I can see a Miqo'te cosplaying as Korone Inugami or someone riding basically Mechagodzilla. I just don't see a problem either if someone wants a toggle system to swap out some of the more "interesting" outfits in the game.
This is what peak performance looks like.
Peak
Performance
Just for that I might fantasia back to Au Ra.
Totally wasn't considering it already, I swear.
Clothes are added in this game because they're a part of a world created by developers. Some of the NPCs also wear them sometimes, be it seasonal ones or an Elezen posing as a frog in Il Mheg and kids in a Rebell Coat in Ishgard.
That said, the answer for the "hide glamours" is: no. And it was already discussed here many times.
so you're fine with the completely clashing armguards? because i'm not.
and this tier is very hit or miss on whether unglammed BiS looks good at all: https://imgur.com/a/sN3DF9Y
you really want to see a bunch of people wandering around identically dressed like that?
A toggle where it just defaults other players into job gear would be fine. If they are <50 just show them in some basic armour set. 50-59 lvl 50 job gear, 60-69 60 job gear etc
Gives you a good idea of how strong the player is and makes distinguising their job easy too.
Not something I would use but if lore and immersion is what you are going for that seems an ok way to do it. Just a lot of effort for devs for something not a whole lot of people would use.
actually having a bunch of people in the af gear (the first set at least) would go directly against the lore. off the top of my head whm, sch, blm, smn, and mnk are all jobs that are either straight up illegal or have had their membership wiped out in eorzea.
saying you want a toggle is fine i guess, but its not any more immersive or lore friendly than the frog suit. its basically the same as wanting a bigger ass modded in, personal taste.
isn't there also a mod that makes everything lalafell too lol
anyways in regards to OP - get over yourself
To be honest..... When you can't show of your glamour to other people.... what is the Point of glamour at all.
You can still show it to other people, you will not know if people have the toggle on or not. So you have not lost that experience of sharing your glam, unless you go around asking people; “PST, hey do you see my glam? What do you think of it? Tell me exactly what I am wearing so I know you are not one of those dirty glam hiders!”
