Sorry, to be specific as I think wow has something called a crafting bag and I didn't mean that, there are other MMOs that put all crafting items into an independent system. No crafting items in the game takes up space. This system can be designed differently and thus not quite comparable to inventory slots, the optimization opportunity does not make them 1:1 "I would just rather have normal slots".

This is actually the similar statement to glamour log, though of course different optimization since they don't need # stored (depending on how done, FFXIV is honestly very close to just being called a bank rather than some other sort of system - like WoW's or other MMOs).

Although- yes, if I had to be pick one I'd very easily pick glamour. But both would take me to like 130 slots total across all three retainers and my character space.

Because the main inventory is always accessible in all content, even battle content.
Whereas a separate inventory that is inaccessible during battle content (world zones and duty instances) results in less server strain, fewer databases that are being constantly accessed.
This is why you cannot access retainers, armoire, or glamour dresser except for in certain zones, why you can't access the saddlebag in instanced duties, and why you can't use a glamour plate in the field. Those databases are inaccessible, because various additional battle-related databases are being accessed.
So a crafting bag, an additional inventory space, similar to the saddlebag, but is only accessible within towns and housing zones, and can be accessed by the crafting system, could potentially be a solution where simply 'adding more inventory space' isn't.

Look at those pages of keyitems not being used at all by anyone.
Ok, i bet there is someone who might have the first page full - Go and deliver your quests.

But the other two? They should be released FOR FREE to everyone, like right now.

Soooo I has questions.

Who here has been gearing low level (pre 50) characters lately?

Is anyone also a sprout leveling crafting or gathering jobs?

If you are level capped or not interested in this stuffs, do you recall the time when you were?

I have family members and friends all running out of inventory space because they are "hording" gear they will use on alternative jobs. It becomes a whoooole butt load of gear when you begin getting into gathering and crafting as well. Of course you could say well, focus on one thing but that is not what excited sprouts do.

Most of the dungeons they go through involve players skipping many of the loot chests leaving them over leveled and under geared. This reinforces the mentality that I should hold on to all the things because getting them in future times may be difficult. Heck, my uncle was told "We're not doing this, you don't need loot" as a first time sprout in Haukke Manor by a fricken battle mentor of all the things.

Then there are the glamours from alliance raids which are significantly more difficult to undersize then farm.

Then. Then! Then there are timed special nodes that only appear once every few hours, you bet the new player is storing those once they realize they must be present in a location during specific times.

This all creates a run away issue problem that Square created yet sells a solution for. Hmm.. where have I seen this before?

Now, one final question. If EA or Ubisoft sold you additional inventory space and resource harvesting ability yet charged a monthly cost for it would this be acceptable?

Because if I head over to Swtorland I get fifteen tabs of personal storage per character (each almost the size of one retainers inventory) aaannnnd a legacy storage of fifteen more tabs.. for in game currency..

I can also own five Strongholds but that is other discussion.

Again, it is okay to not like everything about something you enjoy. It does not mean you hate it and does not mean we hate it. This community is weird..

So while I wait for EW I'm currently doing every single Jobs Resistance weapon while leveling my last few Jobs in Bozja. This means I have to have a spare weapon for them to equip if I want to turn in the quests. That's another 21 weapons I have to hold on to until I get the finished product.

You can only have 5 stages active at any one time though, so you should have a rolling set of 5 jobs on the go, when one is complete, you start another one from the bottom.

Those are not actual slots. The screen is just designed that way to be consistent with the other inventory tab screens.

This is 9 sets total (including crafting and gathering). You should be rotating your gearsets to your lowest level.

There is no "don't toss it" mentality because the game actively encourages you to toss items - GC turn ins, marketboard, desynthesizing.

You don't need every crafting item. You don't need to keep every gathered item. This is a mentality that YOU created. Not Squeenix.

While I am happy that that you plan in advance the moment you load up a new game I am not sure everyone functions this way. I am sure you did this though and never ever never had inventory issues ever!

Sooooo I shall humor you with the math because, zwei not.

Assuming that a new player is going to see three gathering professions and eight crafting professions then say to themselves "Boy! I need all of these and should level them together for maximum efficiency!"

The number of non stacking items amounts toooo; Thirteen items (both left and right side) for DoL then 13 more items for DoH buuut wait!

Do the dominion of land and hand all use the same main and off hand? Nope! So let us expand our math horizions! Accounting for both main and off hand for every DoH and DoL that equals 22 items. 21 items if we do not include fishing off hand because you do not get this until later.

This brings our total tooooooo > 22 (left and right side for DoH + DoL) plus 21 for a total of 43 inventory slots.

This only becomes worse when you get into unique sets for jobs not better. Should I do the math for that? It is not pretty.

Actually pre 50 DoM gear is used on healers because it has a mind stat. It is tank gear that is different. Assuming that the player is doing as you said and leveling every single job at exactly the same time (not counting jobs that begin at 50 or Blue) we shall do zee math.

Not even including the weapons this is just left and right side that is umm; 33 inventory slots. Now accounting for weapons; 47

Add previous numbers for DoH + DoL = 90. 90 inventory slots in a best case if I will efficiently level all the things simultaneously.

Try to remember that gearing is not this simple though! Many gear sets are given at fluctuating levels, especially DoL or DoH off hand. Your main hand may be level 46 while the offhand does not have every other level options and ends at level 49. This is especially issue with rings and jewelry.

This problem only bloats when unique sets are required (ninja). Do the math for nine sets and you shall see how this can easily run away.

While it is fantastic we know about these things as higher level players there were times when we did not. Unless you wish to imply the moment you set foot in Eorzea you knew how every in game system worked and where it was? Because sometimes with players in FF14 land this is how they come across to newer players. We forget how easy it is to be overwhelmed and lost.

No.. no you do not and it is great that we now understand this having spent much time with the game. Heck! There are many many times even after 100 plus hours I still do not know what I should toss away. I recently sold some dark steel only for a friend to want items made with dark steel ore two weeks later and guess who had no dark steel? This lala.

Why do I feel like you may have purchased extra retainers or have other vested interest in defending Square's decisions?

This is kinda reminding me of the "skip cutscenes" crowd or the "I no wish to push buttons" group. I can and have demonstrated how inventory is issue and the response is always "LoL hoarder throw things away". It is difficult to have discourse with groups of individuals that will defend billion dollar corporations to their own detriment. People also purchased cow patties so nothing surprises anymore.

I mean.. I can break down the day to day leveling process of friends and family for that fresh sprout perspective or how end game raiders sometimes have multiple sets (tanks especially) because Warrior values different melds then Dark Knight buuuut I feel it would be mostly ignored. I will though! I will if it is asked of Mia.

I think if your retainers just kept your inventory and that was all they did it would not be so bad. But just having my two retainers Botanist and Miner I am realizing the power you indeed have due to these retainers. I can collect time nodes most if not all of the time, without ever going out to collect them with the caveat of just needing to gather them just once. If you have more retainers you also have access with each extra one to have an extra 20 slots to sell things. Now I wish to ask. If you have more retainers do you think someone would be able to make more money in half the time due to this advantage?

I am not hurting for gill but I know someone who is selling a ton more things on the market will definitely get enough to buy a house in way less time. Even flood the market. Maybe buying more houses which I have known some to do so they can than flip the houses to alt characters or just to keep them from others. I know this is not everyone, but when I know someone who has 6 alts all with their own house it seems a bit selfish.

You even get those extra retainer per character. It is account wide so spending extra money for inventory space for an extra retainer per month gives you one extra retainer per character. One extra hand to gather resources 20 extra slots to sell things. I am unsure but it does seem like an unfair advantage given to people who shell out more money. I am sure others would disagree, but those who do, how many retainers do you have? Do you have a house? How much money in game do you make compared to someone else who does not have those things?

I do not think the current inventory systems really encourage leveling crafters or gatherers. You really should keep some of those items to save time, because if you do not you wait or need to spend money to travel and gather things again and again, it is just not fun. The other mmo I have played use to do this same system until people complained, and they were given a resources tab to store resources separate from their inventories. I do not understand why this community has so many people in it that will just eat other players who think something may be unfair. Players wish for things, so we post them, but there is always people just defending the opposite angle with vitriol and malice. It truly is a great community. No one can just have a discussion or debate like civilized humans.

I do not even wish to see my inventory when I am max level and filling my inventory with springs and other random things for relic weapon steps.

EDIT: If this is not already a problem, why are they taking away belts to add extra space already.

There are already games out there that do item managment way better than SE does: GW2 and ESO as the better examples of proper itemization.

The reality is: The devs didn't create a proper inventory system and then when people started facing issues they monetized on it through bank space (retainers).

YET ANOTHER example of SE profiting from clear design issues they have no intention to fix excused on poor server structure-capabilities-networking-coding-PS6 limitations. Whatever, covid even, as of late all fanboys love to use that one - Even if most problems prominent in this game date from... 2013. Inventory space has ALWAYS been an issue.

I need more retainers and a bigger gobbie bag!

And yes I need all that stuff... All that leveling gear... all those surplus crafting materials... all those past relic armors and weapons... Yes even the box of cookies I've kept in there for 8 years that was proven to be the cause of death for 6 lalafels that tried to steal it from my cabinet... >.>

I also need all those past tokens and totems from raids and trials... >.>

Funny enough I have a habit of being a packrat in video games in general but not IRL... *shug* maybe the games let me get it all out of my system lol

I remember making a good amount of gil on FFXI selling materials used for the Gobbiebag upgrades back in the day.

I remember being told to stop for merely warning a sprout that the post ARR grind is kinda.. not good. I was not even mean about it! I told them to prepare for a lengthy grind and have snacks or music or other stuffs ready.

I know this not be true because of other mmos. Other mmos I have played give you more inventory slots and I have not had any issues. I am unsure what the difference could possibly be. Of course there are other games such as path of exile but their inventory tabs would fill up due to each item taking up six slots max. They had inventory issues, but also 'sold' the solution. I know I most likely will not have the same inventory issues once I am max level but something about the limited space just seems off. I do not even have enough glamour plates for each individual job to glamour it accordingly. The solution may be to have an extra set of armor for each class and nothing will share the same set. I have just resigned to using the same glamour for every crafter and every gatherer.

I honestly do not think it is a non greedy thing to have me pay a monthly sub, for each extra expansion, and not even give me a proper inventory. Honestly if inventory was never a problem why do they even sell extra retainers at all. Why do they charge per month and not a one time fee? It just seems suspicious to me.

As the armory chest does not aggregate all inventory into one page but sections it off into neat 35-item sections. The only section that will have more than two items is the weapons section - which should always have a static amount (Meaning if ytou have a lower-levelled weapon, you should not keep it unless you are doing endgame stuff. I'll address this later.).

with 11 sets total (2 sets of gear, with 1 gearset per class) each containing the same gear with the same melds because crafting macros require the same melds and gathering... well... that's something I deliberately do not have much experience in, however I know that late-game gathering has generally the same stats.

There is a gap between Lvl 30-Lvl 50 in which gearing becomes suboptimal - this is something in which Squeenix can improve upon. Typically it's dungeon loot and crafted gear that is class locked... sometimes? It's not uncommon to see sprouts tanking in "All Classes" healer gear.

Again, inventory slots are not aggregated but separated.

If one levels all DOW simultaneously, this is what your inventory will look like:

7 sets of gear, with separate sets in your Gearset List only for weapons. Additionally, since PLD is the only DOW with off hands, you would only end with 12 off hand weapons.

At the end of your levelling process, Disciple of Magics tagged onto this would look like this:

Ranged Magical DPS Share a gearset, and Healers share a gearset.

At the WORST possible outcome, tossing out gear as you level and leveling each class separate from each other, each section should have 27 pieces of armor each. If there is more, you have something extra that you don't need - toss it out.

I did! ^-^ They're only used for marketboard and ventures, since I've begun to make a pretty penny off of casually selling off gear I don't need/use, and crafting.

However, defending square's decisions I am not. You have a total of 1310 slots, with half of those being for gear and the other half being for whatever you want. The armoire needs upgrading, we need more glamour slots for those who have been around since forever and have filled their glamour chests to the brim, and we need more glamour plates. Preferrably 31+ (One for each class (including the two coming out in Nov) + maybe 3 extra for whatever)

If you're filling your inventory with stuff you "might need... maybe, for this class you're going to eventually level... possibly" then you've got poor inventory management.

I'd like to end this by saying that poor inventory management isn't a bad thing - it's a thing that eventually everyone will have to face. I did so several months back - I had one job at level 80, One at level 70, and the rest were scattered in between 30-40-50. I kept gear that was worthless or easily farmed, because I was worried that, despite my careful planning, I'd lose out. I didn't by the way.

Mention absolutely NOTHING about my spelling of disciple, by the way. I'm dumb and too lazy to go back and fix it all.

Josh Strife Hayes is a reviewer and critic not a programmer so he doesn't actually know or understand a lot of the back end of game design. He can only talk about what he sees and hears. Trying to use him as gospel about FFXIV's inventory is a bad idea.

Games that use Diablo style inventories where different items take up different numbers of slots are ones where inventories are artificially restricted compared to database style inventories like FFXIV as each items size makes it artificially take up more space in the inventory. Their max inventory item size is actually the number of 1 slot items you can put in them.

WoW's bag system (and others like it) artificially restricts the size of the inventory by restricting the number of available slots in each bag. Each bag actually has 34 slots but they artificially restrict the number of slots you can put items in based on the type of bag.

FFXIV's inventory is at the actual non-artificial limit they can have due to character datasizes and is why they are constantly looking for ways to get around that limit. (i.e. adding Chocobo Saddlebags, Glamour Dresser, repurposing the belt slot to be more Weapon and ring slots).

Because they can't actually increase subscription prices without causing backlash. A sub to an MMO in 2003 was $12.95 per month. Inflation would put an equivalent cost today at $19.21 per month, but a monthly sub to FFXIV is $12.99~$14.99. They need a way to make up that $4.22 to $6.22.

To the OP Se has adamant defenders. These posts bring out all the usual suspects with 1000's of posts blaming the players. It is pointless. They will defend any bad design and try to drown out any criticism.

Incorrect. Because on many items you have to have:

1) RNG bless you to get the item to show up in the first place. Generally this is 1/7 chance because there's 7 types of gear sets currently

2) RNG bless you that no one else in your group wants that piece too if you're not the exact role who gets need priority.

So that's two layers of RNG to contend with.

Gear is a major issue.

Currencies not going in the currency tab is another MAJOR issue.

From May 2019: SE, Please, we need to talk about currency bloating our inventory.

It's gotten a LOT worse in Shadowbringers

As others have said, stop hoarding. We've got 560 slots of generic inventory space without purchasing additional retainers along with 820 slots reserved for gear in the Armory chest and Glamour Dresser plus the Armoire for the seasonal event/achievement/ARR ilvl50 artifact gear.

It doesn't matter how much more inventory space SE adds, it will never be enough when players want to hoard everything they pick up "just in case".

The majority of items in this game are easy to obtain when you actually need them by buying off the MB/vendor or farming yourself. Save your storage space for those items harder to obtain or that you are using on a daily basis.

WoW had 2 different ways of storing crafting materials.

First were bags specific to certain profession materials (leatherworking, mining, etc.). Ore and ingots would go into a Mining bag, hides and leather into a Leatherworking bag, enchanting materials into the enchanting bag, etc. Leftover room in a bag was wasted. Keep in mind these bags were not separate from generic inventory - they were in lieu of. You were able to have 4 bags (in addition to the default backpack) equipped on your character and 7 bags in your bank. If you wanted to have 3 crafting material bags, that only left you with 8 bags for other purposes.

Later (Warlords of Draenor) they added the Reagent tab to the bank. Again, it was limited to crafting materials. If your normal bank inventory bags and character inventory bags were overflowing with other items but your Reagent tab was only half full, tough luck.

Generic inventory space is far superior than specialized inventory. You get to store what is most important to you regardless of type and regardless of what other players decide is most important to them. SE adding a 200 slot "crafting bag" doesn't help those who want 200 more slots for glamour, nor does increasing the glamour dresser an additional 200 slots help those who want more room for crafting materials. Adding 200 more generic slots would help both groups of players.

What made the big difference for WoW was the addition of Collections, especially those for toys and transmogrification (glamour). The five 28 slot bags I had filled with gear for transmog and the one I had for my toys mostly emptied out once I could confirm the items were added to my collection.

While I would love to be able to craft from items in retainer inventory, I don't think that will ever happen in this game because those items aren't connected to your character. They're connected to your retainer, which you have sole access to use. Unless SE can come up with more efficient ways to transmit character data between game servers and player client, I don't see that ever changing.

That's been done in this thread a lot. But having wallets for currencies, making upgrading items tokens instead of items per se, and having diferentiated inventory bags and an organized material bank do the trick: Much better experience handling the inventory.

Those games might not allow multi-classes as the armorie system here does - But they allow for alt-character banking. And in the particular case of GW2, even if you play as one class - That same class can have multiple ways of being played - each way requiering their own items/gears which is not far off.

In ultimate instance, if you design your game arround multiclassing like XIV and the armorie system does: You make sure players will have enough room.

Or else you might end up having to remove certain gear parts from the game because they cannot handle it: So no matter how you slice it - Is a design flaw.

Don't forget giving minions and mounts their own log. At first if you wanted multiple mounts, they took bag space too.

All I wish we could "destroy" gear in the glamour dresser and unlock it as a permanent glamour piece. This would free up like 400 slots worth of item slots because the gear is technically now a catalogue piece rather then an inventory piece.

The glamour dresser should just work as the wardrobe of GW2.
You get any piece of gear and you unlock it's skin, forever, to be glamoured on anything, the actual possession of the item is not needed anymore after unlocking the skin.

The glamour book should just be a massive collection of pages with skins of gear sets from dungeons, raids, events, etc. Select and apply on the fly.
If you got your hands on any piece of gear in XIV, it's skill should be unlocked on the glamour book or wardrobe whatever.

Anyone says you can just destroy dungeon gear clearly doesn't know the pain of trying to get your class's specific gear in dungeons like Ghimlyt Dark. It's all RNG so it's totally random, but I know people who have literally ran it 50+ times and still don't have the tank chestpiece they want.

Let's also not forget they keep making this issue worse by doing things like putting dyeable AF gear behind content nobody even does later down the line (Eureka and Varis Ex.) If I get the piece of gear I want there, I am 100% keeping it and not farming it again because it's impossible to find groups for it after a while.

Lastly, they keep releasing new mogstation gear that also takes up those very limited slots. I have 100% stopped buying gear from the mogstation, despite generally doing so if I find a use for it glamour wise, because I just don't have anywhere to put the gear.

Inventory is a mess and one of the largest culprits is SE refusing to do anything about gear storage. 200 slots last xpac was nice, but it's not a solution since every patch adds more and more gear. It's also in conflict with the design of the game. The game seems to want you to run old content to farm gear for glamour, level all the classes, etc. etc. It's just a shame it starts to get punishing after a while if you actually do those things.

They also have a really nice wardrobe system where you can save the 'skin' of any armor piece, and then discard/salvage the gear itself. This way it doesn't take up any inventory space while still being usable for glamour.

Compare that to XIV where we have to keep the actual item, the wardrobe has a finite amount of space available, which if you're like me, requires juggling what items you put in there, outfits you pay real cash for don't have a free storage option and can be tossed by accident losing it forever...it leaves a lot to be desired.

Can we all manage OK with what XIV gives us? Yeah, sure. Could the systems be way better*? Totally.


*I realize this game has a lot of things holding it back, and we can't have a lot of nice things because of it. So do I think some amazing QOL options from other games can make it into XIV? Probably not. But lets not pretend that what we do have to deal with has been implemented in an ideal way.

Just a heads up to people about retainers. They are a weird left over from 1.0 and we would all be better off if they were removed. In 1.0 retainers sold items like a random placed NPC in a zone. Except you had to check every retainer. If I remember correctly before ARR. The MB is just a search and the retainers still exist in this zone. But instead of clicking on every retainer looking for one piece of cloth, you use the MB interface that searches for you.



They have improved inventory since ARR but we also have multiple expansions of bloat. If the game handled seasonal and cash shop items better that would help some. The materia system will hopefully get a squish with the rest of the game. Creating aethryte gear sets would also smooth out the levelling process. It would help people not save dungeon drops for levelling other jobs. No this would not kill the MB. You know what kills the MB me having retainers with unlimited quick ventures. Also you don't need MB to level like old days they added Ishgard restoration for that.



Also to the person who says it is easy to just go get more. This game isn't really easy to go just get more. Not all dungeons are just like a lvl 80 farming Satasha. You couldn't even do the 24 man even if it was soloable. They could go the replica way they did for sky pirate and make all dungeon set replicas craftable or gil syncs.




Not my idea someone asked about this in a thread. Change all fireworks and such to emotes. Or create a tab like the umbrella tab. The animation is all already done and stuff that give fireworks just make it some other throw away item. This is just one of those things that shows they don't think about space in a concerned way, because they have a dedicated base that defends them. If we admit the game has limitations and we are already working to the max for item storage. Would you not implement thoughtful solutions that are not game breaking. Making all materia lvl one that can fit in i999 gear with +100 is game breaking. Having an event fireworks as an emote instead of a consumable is not.

Mmhmm! I did this not long ago, so did two friends (the ones recently having the most trouble).
The conclusion they reached? Yes. Yes I am going to be using that because I am leveling everything and do not have a means to undersize dungeons yet and re-obtain the gear I might need. Even when I do this will cost time so instead I "horde" it.

This leaves you with six weapon slots available in best case scenario. We know you know I know best case is not how this works. Most are not playing by leveling every job simultaneously because that is.. silly. The game even warns you not to do this because of armory exp bonus.

Do you perhaps feel that having additional retainers makes the procurement of resources easier? According to this I would say yes, yes you do. Because it is easier to obtain things you feel less need to store them. Because it is easier for you to obtain things and sell them you have more purchasing power to use the market board with. This purchasing power allows you to obtain "stuff I threw away or sold" when needed more easily.

This sounds like issue that could be fixed by increasing inventory capacity or relegating more inventory to "general inventory". The glamour system needs Jesus and I am not touching that with a ten foot anything. The desire to store glamour creates half of the inventory issues in first place!

Ohhhhh wait so you did exactly that! Mismatched leveling as any sane individual would approaching a game as massive as FF14.. and it caused inventory issues. You reached a higher level so lower level gear became more easily obtainable. What about before you reached a higher level? Before you had tomestone gear? You resolved this problem because by the time you had leveled each thing it was no longer a problem. I would say the problem actually resolved its self.

Something additional worth mentioning I forgot to remember. Tomestone gear.. by the twelve tomestone gear. It is so so easy to over cap on tomestones by only using roulettes to level alt jobs. Your choice is then to stay over capped or spend them on tomestone gear which, you guessed it! Takes up inventory..

This is not exactly how inflation works but I am nooooo market guru! Yes, the value of a single dollar has diminished but so has the cost of development and the power of server hardware.

Let us compare server cpus from 2003 to now shall we?

The first amd server Opteron cpu was code named SledgeHammer and had a total of one single core. This was a 130 nanometer cpu (quite large!) that output much heat. Common arrangements for servers included multiple cpus on a single board. This was quite common practice as far back as the Pentium MMX.

Server storage space was also far far more limited. This is pre solid state, pre sata. I will not even get into memory capacity that is a dooooozy.

Now a current server cpu would be from the AMD Eypc line. The EPYC 7763 has a whopping 64 cores each multithreaded for a total of 128 threads. Each one of these cores is substantially more powerful then a single 2003 Opteron core. Power consumption is roughly the same though!

So yes inflation has done its stuffs but Square has access to far far more powerful hardware then Blizzard of 2003 would have ever dreamed of. Looking at these numbers you should actually be surprised Blizzard managed to keep the cost where they did.

I did and still do program speaking of this. When I was but young Mia I worked on mmo emulators. It would surprise you just how much power we were able to squeeze out of a single core AMD Athlon 64.. buuuut we would never dream of merging character inventory into same database as character data. Inventory was contained in separate tables and could be executed from dedicated SQL servers (yes we used sql, mysql was most common then).

I'd like to point out that the only thing leveling a class to 80 assisted me with is the armory bonus. And I've mentioned before that I'm still in the process of leveling all my classes to cap, but using the methods I've learned over the course of these few months. I don't really have the energy to do what I did last post (point by point), so I'll just respond to a few things.

Yes, I am! Poor inventory management doesn't mean you're at fault 100% - there is much that SE could do to assist with inventory management. Adding more slots isn't the solution though, because those who are keeping everything just in case will still, eventually, run into the same exact issues. There could be an ingame tutorial - optional, of course, but perhaps located in the adventurers guild. Someone who will teach sprouts that they don't have to hold onto levelling items and every crafter/gatherer item because they will be easily reacquired or out leveled within 30 minutes.

Streamlining the early gearing would do wonders, as would explaining how gear sets work and that there will ultimately be 7 sets of gear with the only difference being weapons.

Expanding inventory won't teach proper inventory management - playing the game will. Learning what you can and can't toss will.

I've never received something from a retainer that I've previously tossed out, I can say that much. And the purchasing power I have is something that can easily be obtainable by free players - the amount I have is simply spread further apart by extra retainers. Instead of 1mil in 1 retainer, there is 100k in one, 30k in the other, etc etc.

Edit: not free. Players who don't pay for extra retainers. Happy?

I was not using his video as 'gospel' I am only stating it was a decent video on the subject without having to go into a million different mmos and how their inventories or systems work. Even how bad they could be. Usually the ones I have played will start with just selling cosmetics like Aion than 'accidentally' start adding small amounts of pay to win aspects to their stores. Thankfully it is all used to get items within the game and not to trade in for a second currency than a third currency, to then trade in for special currency that could be converted to another currency to purchase items on mogstation. At least I don't think there is such a system in ffxiv. I hope there is not, but I am still learning what exists and such because there is indeed a ton of things to do and interact with. Do not be suprised though when you could only purchase things on mogstation only using 'Crysta' and you are always just slightly short to purchase a mount making you pay for the better higher amount to get it leaving you always with extra crysta in the future. It is just an observation.

The system is already there to give us more inventory, but they would not just give people one extra retainer to solve the issue. It is perfectly fine that is what an alt only dedicated to keeping that small bit of extra stuff is for, but the nature of the pay for extra space just doesn't sit right with me.

Maybe they should reduce the amount of regents it takes or just add a separate tab for those like they have in other games. They did add one for crystals I am unsure if they use to flood the inventory. If they had why did they fix it? Why not take that and throw the crystals back into our inventories. We have tons of space already!

I shall not get into inflation because that is a huge can of worms. Depending on where you live you do not get paid more so things going up just means more people wont be able to play the game in the first place. Of course people would be upset. This is also not accounting for conversion rate or where you live in the world if your dollar is worth more or less on another dollar. My friend pays the equivalent of I think 34 dollars a month due to conversion but I am unsure how much that amount means to her exactly just that it is quite expensive to her and her family.

If I compare to other games that have a one time payment for content or even a free to play game as well it also get strange. It is similar to how much you should charge for artwork or a crafted item. Where you factor in content and how much time it took for you to make it, but coming up with a price is always weird. Especially with just items in ffxiv you can buy some items from beast tribes or other random vendors some may not know about and wish to sell that item for how much time you put in to making it. All I can really go on is how much a regular game is and usually ranging from 15-60 dollars but really some games that are 60 dollars are a fraction of the quality of games that I have played that are 15 dollars.

I think if they increased the sub there may be backlash but mostly because people have been paying the set amount for a set time, and they are getting the same amount of content. I am also unsure how the inflation is within the place they operate would actually be. Japans wages are way different than just 7.25 in some places in the US I think it is about 8.50 in Japan. Also the cost of living not accounting for food. I know you at least get transportation accounted for in some incomes within japan that may not cover all of the commute but most of it. This is just going on the bare minimum someone could have access to financial.

My math may be super off, so bear with me. Regular inventory is 140 each retainer is 175 each chocobo saddlebag is 70. 35 for each individual set of armor only able to store specific gear so 35 for weapons chest plates so on and so on. If you are cheeky you can use the glamour dresser early game to store 400 sets of armor you can take back out. So about 560 slots for anything at all the other stuff is restricted to types of armor. If you are not being cheeky and storing your gear in your glamour dresser or actually use that for glamour it may fill up by just having one outfit for each class. I know people can manage their inventories better, yes, but other mmos allow you to purchase space with in game currency and have crafting regents in a separate inventory all together. There is not even the option to grind currency for an extra chocobo bag just pay up to papa square. I do not even know if the developers are even getting the money from any of this or from mogstation. I think you are correct but not accounting for some extra space that are reserved for only certain items

Also do not forget that some items can not be stored in the Armoire for no reason like the level 50 sets of armor, but the level 45 sets can be stored for some reason buuuuuuut everything stored within the armoire can only be dyed within a glamour plate which we have not many

Tis a bit of the good idea bad idea. Define easily re-acquired? If a level 30 sprout wishes to obtain gear from Haukke Manor they must queue for Haukke Manor. This means potentially waiting fifteen or more minutes in queue, then dealing with party members rushing through not opening chests so they obtain even less loot. Gray vendor items are inferior to significantly inferior to dungeon loots. The good idea part comes from making this not issue, perhaps better vendor or msq loots with tutorial? I think just giving easier access to on par with dungeon drop leveling gear would do much to assist.

That is.. kinda difficult to believe if we are being honest. You have never once discarded a crafting resource then later realized you needed more of it and dispatched retainers to procure? Everything else you said had some semblance of believability to it but this last bit, this last bit I question heavily.

Free trial players do not get access to retainers at all so I will assume you mean subscription only players.

We get two retainers. Each retainer can go on a maximum of one venture and can sell a maximum of twenty items. That is forty items and two ventures per hour maximum.

If you purchased ten retainers you can dispatch them upon ten ventures per hour (eight more per hour then I can) and sell 160 more items at a time then I can. That is umm, that is not insubstantial. Now.. if you make alts.. Welp! Things become far more interesting then. A player with ten retainers (I assume you do not pay per character, if you do that is just wow Square) has an exponentially increasing advantage over one with only two.

Inventory is just the tip of that there iceburg but this is other discussion now. I will not even get into retainers being able to access timed node drops whenever or their ability to bring back dungeon loot. Of course someone with more then two retainers is having easier time procuring things then someone with two, saying otherwise is facetious at best.

Notice how I specified that I've never "received something from a retainer that I've previously tossed out." Crafting resources are things that I either gather or purchase *as needed* and as such I do not toss them out and ask for retainers to retrieve more of it. Do I *run out*? Yeah. Everyone does. But I'm very particular with crafting resources specifically, and that was actually what I did the most research in before I even downloaded the game. I also didn't get into crafting until I knew I had the time, gil, and energy to powerlevel as crafters specifically I did not want to have a level disparity between. This is where I fall differently from other players in that my generalized anxieties actually helped me out for once!

I've also stated that my purchasing power is easily obtainable by free players and, yes, I meant players who do not have more than 2 retainers. Purchasing power =/= ability to acquire money. For example: a millionaire has significantly more purchasing power than someone with $100k, yet that person with $100k might make more in ten years than the millionaire in a lifetime. The millionaire has more *purchasing power* (The ability to purchase and acquire goods and services), yet the person with 100k makes more over time. Purchasing power is simply the value of a sum of money - not the potential value of multiple sums of money.

They do give you 2 for free from the start and even if all available retainers were given out for free people would still be complaining about not having enough inventory.

Retainers are also intended more for longer term storage than short term storage than as short term storage that people sometimes treat them as.

They did reduce the number of materials need when leveling crafting, even if not decreasing the total number of crafting materials, and in multiple ways: Crafting beast tribe dailies supply the material needed for their crafts, custom deliveries are crafted from a limited number of items purchased from nearby merchants and the Firmament crafts only have 1 craft per 10 level period and most of the materials needed are sourced from an attached zone while the single remaining material is easily crafted from easily gathered materials.

Crystals have pretty much always been a crafting currency and the crystals tab was a way to actually let players carry large amounts of them when the stack cap was 99.

They're not 1:1 comparisons though. A system that has a very specific order of a very specific set of items can be stored differently than free form slots that can potentially include the entire list of all things. While it's not apples to oranges you're not speaking the same breed of apple at least. Given that you know what slot two is you don't need to store that anymore, just the quantity, as well the access time can be different. There are opportunities of optimization and just general different storage solutions if you were 'going big'.

If you speak of 30 bag slots dedicated to just crafting items that works exactly like a regular inventory then sure yeah.. then I'd rather have normal space too, but I wasn't speaking of that. We're discussing different things, this is also why I said I think they're talking about WoW stuffs, and it appears of your focus as well, but I am not thinking that specifically.

Glamour logs can potentially be stored in similar better ways than standard items too. The less requirements you have the more weird things you could do to store them differently (funnily you might read that as 'the more restrictions of what is within' so.. more less.. depends on what you're talking about but for example having who knows what in slot who knows where causes a different approach than I have exact limited list and know exactly where it is I just need to know how much of it). While a reagent storage solution could just be another banking system, it also doesn't need to be that way. You have to plan that stuff out from the beginning, in general, though (likely # of unique items would suddenly become more important).

I think both are huge challenges (for different reasons), though I imagine glamour log being far more likely (given for example we have a crazy amount of # unique regents and glamour log would benefit more people), yet.. if I had both.. wewh that'd be sweat easy management on my inventory.

Edit: Want to add I appreciate the further details to WoW and generally agree with many sentiments, I did however want to note that I was specifically thinking of an end result system that would functionally not be something that is akin to a usual inventory system (given that it couldn't handle normal inventory, not an inventory system but a rigid formed list or whatever other clever shortcut programmers may take given they have a series of fixed situations). In such a situation 20 slots of normal inventory with all it's free form ability might be akin to 150 slots of crafting space (which is to say they're not 1:1, slots made for anything vs not slots made for a specific list of items).
