I mostly keep my chatting to Discord VC, thankfully enough. I can be as blunt and verbally open as the respective servers allow.
But can you even imagine if VC was implemented in any kind of MMO? It’d basically turn into Overwatch.

There is a difference in swear words and being obscene. That's why you got reported I imagine. Use your common sense when speaking in public chats. My guess and it happens more often than not, is that there was more obscene than the one word used. Like the way you phrased it and it was found offensive enough to report.
You can't go around blurting out any old thing you want in public chat, nor should you be allowed to, because there are players from all walks of life, who pay to play just like you. If it's cringe worthy then take it to tells. It's simple...Respect the community, respect the game and things will be just fine.
Charming. I've tried to be as civil as possible.
If you read my examples, you would understand I am aware of that:
I never said they wouldn't be. I said:
How the game devs and mods want to define it. And they do. And you're in jail for violating it.
I mean, you're not actually in jail... as Vidu said:
If that's what your take away is, sure. I'm not surprised since it seems you haven't really read what I had to say.
Look, I've got nothing personal against you. You seem like you can get carried away or a little hot headed over things. All good, we all screw up or get upset...but is this really a hill worth fighting over? Like I said at the very beginning:
Chalk it up to a learning experience and wake up tomorrow a better person.
"Chalk it up to a learning experience and wake up tomorrow a better person."
Well maybe not a better person, that's subjective. If I join a crazy cult, the people in the crazy cult thinks I'm a better person for joining, but others may not see it that way. lol
Maybe a better phrase would be "Chalk it up to a learning experience and wake up tomorrow a better player in the eyes of the FFXIV GM's" they make the rules right. *chuckles*
sounds like someone who was spamming general chat and got popped.
No matter what anyone says, you DESERVE to know the reason you are in jail, because it is technically a violation of your rights to your information. If you don't get a reason, then you need to file a complaint with the customer services, and ask them POLITELY, to give you the record. So long as they don't expose the person who reported you, then there is nothing wrong with getting the information.
Just please remember to treat them with decency. They are just doing a job, and working for Square Enix. Whatever happens, they do not have any control over. It's the higher ups that have the control.
A GM deemed your actions in violation of ToS. This is the reason.
One can request their ban to be reviewed and lifted if it was inappropriate but you won't get further information than what was already given to you. I am not sure how to process goes. I've read that for some people, the gms talked with them before they got put in jail.
Filing a complaint won't do anything, it is a waste of time.
Ironically, you can grief and troll all you want pretty much as long as you remain silent in chat. If you're super unlucky, you *might* be caught if the GM is in a bad mood and the reporters have you on stream or something. But otherwise? Totally abuseable report system that relies far too much on chat logs.
Being reported for hurt feels seems to be a thing that happens these days. I've never had issues with GMs because I usually stick to my FC/Friends. I only quip back when someone says something to me that I don't like. But then I clap back in such a passive way. Like... I am not swearing at you or saying unkind things about your mom (classless to do anyways) but then I'll get that one person that says "ENJOY YOUR BANLOL!" and I'm like "....you do know a GM can rewind the chat to see who instigated what, yeah?"
Blacklists should be limitless...
I find threads like this incredibly sus when content exists like "Stroking the Haft" involving Hunberct Longhaft and his two catgirl "assistants" and the overtly sexual references a couple years ago in Heavensturn, among many other examples.
Plus a lot of these when details come out end up being a lot more than just a wordy dirty here or there.
Considering how many times my friend has trolled alliance roulettes as a tank and only been to gm jail once and it was directly after he said something in chat It's a pretty good bet that you will only get caught if you're chatting.
Everything else is deniable and can be chalked up to just being a bad player.
The only people I swear with are close friends and family - and we are most DEFINITELY not having adult conversations. We're talking about how Gaius' helmet horns look like he's... y'know... And what two races "merged" to make Lopporits. And how best to scream when you've hit your shin.
TIL that there is a jail in FFXIV.
This thread is really reminding me I should report the goings on for my servers novice network more. Some primo 3.3 violators in there.
This is exactly the same line of thought 90's moms had when anime that was advertised as Teen or Mature had to recolor their blood green and call it sweat, or have Dragon Ball dub sending villains to "the next dimension" under fear that their children might become drug abusing psychopaths. It turned out TV was not a nanny nor a replacement for parenting.
Well, got news for you millenial mom. The internet is also not a nanny nor a replacement for parenting.
I'm sensing the veiled "Shut up, Karen", which is heavily over used to silence criticism. Cute. Anyway~
It's not even remotely the same thing, kiddo. You're talking about something that was needlessly censored to bring it down a level vs something that was intended to be Teen from the get go. Abide by the rules or jog on. Simple.
You have to keep reporting and saying that you're waiting for a GM. IIRC there's a cooldown period between reports(so you can't spam them).
I don't know why they don't have a "let GM know you're online" button of some sort, because the report button itself shouldn't be used just to notify a GM that you're in jail waiting.. isn't that tying up the system for actual reports?
Edit: Before I forget, the lodestone is governed by the same GM system. If you screw up with people on the lodestone, that counts as screwing up in the game. In other words, if you get banned from the lodestone, you're banned from the game as well.
Really not necessary to label someone based on the era of which they were born. .
Um, I never advocated or asked anyone to "protect the children".
I said, I believe, very specifically, that this game is ESRB rated "Teen" and that comes with certain expectations and general rules. And you can choose to break them and generally people won't care. But if you got busted for breaking the rules, you deal with the consequences.
You DID read my posts right?
I'll try to break it down for you:
A) If I somehow took my kids to a stripper club or a "hedonist" beach, I would be an absolute idiot (and a Karen), were I to complain about topless women or sexual goings-on, yeah? Basically what idiots did when they complained about Deadpool not being a kids' movie. I assume we agree there.
B) If I took my kids to a family friendly beach or a hamburger shop which advertised as being for children I would be within my rights to complain about people getting it on in front of everyone, or topless waitresses. I mean, there's a reason Hooters goes as close to that line as they can without crossing it.
To your anime example: you do realize that there are broadcasting rules which determine age ratings, and that certain channels (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, etc) were trying to lock in a specific after-school-teenage demographic, yes? And at that time if they decided to keep certain aspects and bump up the rating it would have been a huge problem for their sponsors/advertisers, etc? It was a lot less about Karens than it was straight cash money.
hey gamers we have murder and rape in our videogame but we draw the line at bad swear words
i think this argument is completely insane, if a teen is able to read and understand what is going on in the world of ffxiv, how are swear words a problem? yes, i am aware of the ESRB rating, it just doesnt make sense to me. i also dont understand why people cant just use the blacklist function and instead feel the need to be vicious and take up way more of their time to use the report function.
theres a reason why people are afraid to use any public channels to talk because anything and everything could be bent in a way that a "reasonable" person could find offense to. the report system is a complete joke, people get jailed for anything but reasonable things. a very good example of this is to be found here: https://twitter.com/Sorriow/status/1...214716928?s=20
you said funny thing in your pf? boom banned. you used an emote one too many times? boom banned. you said a word someone doesnt like? boom banned. you have a bit of banter with your friend in saychat and called him an idiot? boom banned.
another good example is in that thread: https://twitter.com/fuma_shuriken/st...606149126?s=20
here a person reported by someone because they AFK'd ontop of someones house. anyone can make up a reason why they would be offended by something, maybe they just dont like that person and are looking for fodder to get them banned, which is rather easy to find given the TOS, and SE has to act as per their own rules. this makes witch hunts a very easy thing to do and leaves a dangerous precedent. obviously there are no proofs of these things happening because SE conveniently doesnt disclose those, but speaking from personal experience and many others i can very much believe it.
SE has made the rules completely arbitrary and ambiguous and the people abusing this are turning an MMO, where the social part, meeting random people, hearing peoples opinions, talking about random topics are amongst the most fun things you can do, into a communicative wasteland populated by little behaving minions. it is sad.
people like you are part of the problem and personally i will avoid your type because i find you quite frankly, annoying and boring. but would i go out of my way to report you for being that way? no, why would i? i really dont see a reason why people cant just live and let live. if you just want people like you in your own little bubble to play the videogame with then you have options for that, they are called free companies and linkshells. but i for one value diversity of personalities and it is sad to see people so stubbornly insist on having it their way and ruin what makes online games so fun.
and before anyone wants to point out the flaw in my "live and let live" philosophy, obviously things like hatespeech, actual harrassment, racism, transphobia etc. etc. should be and stay reportable, those have no place anywhere period. especially not in a place where LGBTQ+ and other minorities can escape to from their real life abuse.
Caurcas was making an inside joke about how they should report people more often because in actuality they don't care about reporting anyone but it seems everyone is so uppity and ready to go when anyone says anything remotely close to criticism.
Me personally the report button has become a feel good button, someone does anything to remotely annoy you? Report. You can probably get them on something.
I've did that once because someone kicked me from a farm party because I didn't pass on a weapon for someone the party lead was simping for. WHM asks me as SCH to pass AST emerald weapon, I say "No." only thing I said in the 5 runs I was there, dude gets uppity and hits me up with "Wow, rude." and kicks me directly afterwards.
The ESRB rating (and ToS) is the entire issue, full stop, regardless of your understanding of how or why it works.
Your post on someone getting banned because they AFK'd on someone's house is very suspicious as there is really no information or evidence. Just a twitter with a single reply where the poster says "I got banned for AFKing on someone's house". Who's to say it wasn't something else and that the ban kicked in while he was AFKing.
Especially since GMs do not regularly give a reason for bans because it could identify the person with a complaint, I highly doubt your friend was told "banned because AFKing on someone's house".
Happy to be proven wrong, but unless you've got SSs, I wouldn't believe this.
Eh I am only half joking. Off topic and general chatter in novice network is fine. Socialization is rad. However, some "mentors" have taken to what they call novice network after dark on Siren. It basically turns the chat into borderline or straight erp type topics that are very inappropriate. Yet this is fine to them, but they will boot you if you suggest someone should do their job quest for key skills. Community is borked in this game, like a special kind of awful.
Novice Network and Mentorship should have been dissolved *ages* ago.
Peace was never an option.
Except the ESRB also specifically says:
-Online interactions not rated by the ESRB.
It's because the 'T' rating for the game only applies to the actual game content of the game, not content that arises by interaction of users. otherwise, every game with online communications would have to be an automatic AO rating since anyone can bring up adult topics.
It's by Square's choice they punish people for profanity/etc, not because of the game's rating creating certain expectations; let's get that accurate. Plenty of other games are rated T and don't ban/punish for profanity/adult topics in their online environments.
Did you not read the entire thread? Or, rather, what’s your point?
The only real response I guess I have for you is a) a quote from Vidu and b) yeah, of course SE chooses to enforce a Teen-friendly environment of play in their Teen rated game with rules from their ToS.
i see, i was not aware of it. nonetheless the people they are parodying very much exist so my point stands, minus the personal accusations.
cant tell if its satire anymore but that, to me, is a justified report.
looked at in a vacuum it seems completely insane but judging from what i heard and experienced firsthand it sadly does not seem very far-fetched.
lmao yeah novice network is its own kind of devil, the mentor system as it is right now is way too easily accessible and anyone that wants to be one can get it by simply leveling up jobs...which as we all probably have witnessed is not exactly a guarantee of understanding said jobs. mentors should be manually curated (i think this is the word), and work closely with GMs in terms of responsibility. they are supposed to be the shining beacon of the community, an example of a good and knowledgable player.
as it exists right now, all the mentor status gives you is a virtual dunce hat and the privilege to spout nonsensical misinformation to new players.
