Why does everyone want Chemist as a new job?

It could be interesting, especially if they make something like Ninja Mudras where the potion you'll throw to your party member's head depends on which things you added to the mix, which could also be a nice way to get back what was taken from Astrologian; potions to heal, to buff certain stats, to increase mitigation. Since the risk of making a wrong mix will always be there, it could be the perfect justification to make it the only healer with an always ready res (since that will also be one of the posible mixes)

Yeah, a dancer healer would just have a dancing animation while casting heals instead of just holding a stick up. Maybe it would be a bit more mobile than other healers, but it would still operate with the same framework and basic parameters, with a couple of job specific mechanics tossed in like cards/lillies/fairy etc, but ultimately I don't think we're going to ever get an 'outside the box' tank or healer in this game.

But if we get syringes, pills and bandages I will not use it after leveling it. Alchemy is fine, because it has that aether/magical aspect to it, but medicine stuff just isn't to my taste at all in games.

Yes, because apparently a healer that has a fairy and specializes in shields and oGCDs through a limited resource and a healer who buffs through cards and specializes in fast casting and a versatile tool kit are the same as a burst healer who specializes in heavy healing and regens.

I honestly disagree.

My male healers do wear robes, at least some of the time, and it doesn't magically make them look feminine. Sure it depends on the individual design, but robes are historically male clothing as well and I have absolutely no impression of them looking "girly" just because they're wearing a robe and not a shirt.

If nothing else, surely the image of a wizard in robes is sufficiently established?

This has been my alt's SCH outfit for ages and I never would have thought robes like this don't suit a scholar, even if it's nowhere near the relic designs.

I have an assortment of RDM glamours too but I don't have them linkable right now.

The thing with "very casual wear" is that we do have it in the game. It's all-class glamour gear and you're free to use it on whatever you want. A t-shirt and jeans wouldn't make sense as healer-specific gear, with or without chemist.

Fair enough, and I've had similar thoughts on things - like the Mheg Deaca robe where everyone was showing it off and they're all looking the same because it covers everything - though I do think we get a lot of open-fronted things to work with. Even if it's just a slit, you still have to think about what's visible, and skirts usually flutter up when spellcasting.

Honestly, besides raid sets, and not even all of them, most gear and glamours I've seen fall into personal tastes and not this artificial idea of a look you seem to have.

Assuming this isn't a bait thread:

• People think that Chemist as a healer would lead to an aesthetic differentiation the gear going forward (they want less robes basically, and MCH does set a precedent of a combat class aesthetically taking after crafters/gatherers)
• They also want a healer that isn't magic based (kinda impossible with the way raid mechanics and gear works, but that is still a reason)
• The job had some piror incarnations with their own followings
• The use of potions as weapons has some precedents as combat weapons via the use of Molotov cocktails and poisons

As for other questions

• Like Geomancer and Magic Knight, there is some simulates with existing classes you noted which would be reudent...if they were in the same role as the simialr classes, this is impossible for Chemist because as a healer it would be a Discipline of Magic (even if people preferred War), not Hand or Land, so it wouden't be redundant. Where as the chance of redundancy still exists if GEO was a healer and MGK was a Caster DPS
• Theymight name it something else becuase of the ALC connection, like apothecary
• Acronyms would likely be CHM or APC deepening on the name used

At the very least, that line was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the years of posts by players asking for Chemist.

Its not so much that one line (though that line does help reenforce it) as it is that entire story. Theres far more set up and time spent on it than was really needed if it were just going to be a throwaway thing.

If this was setting up Chemist or something similar, then why do it on the First? While it's 'possible' we'd get a new job tied to the First, new jobs tend to be tied to new areas in the expansions, with the exception of SHB because it's set on another world so they drew from things back on the Source rather than tie new job lore to Norvrandt.

So any apothecary/chemist lore...would be entirely separate from this kid we talked to. I think the point of the kid wasn't to foreshadow a job so much as to just show someone else inspired to be a hero in their own way, tying into things thematically with the patch.

Basically, Elidibus draws his strength from people inspired to be heroes in order to become the 'Warrior of Light' and this is providing an example of someone like that at the start of the 5.3 msq. That makes more sense to me for why it's there as opposed to them setting up a job that will probably have its roots back on the Source rather than Norvrandt if added.

• Geomancer

Honestly, like I said, Chemist/Apothecary wouldn't be an odd job. It would be on the same aesthetic level as Scholar, which is the current odd job. I mean, look at the HW SCH gear - that was quite obviously originally, at least in part, a Chemist design. It doesn't even have the mortar board hat like all of the other SCH artifacts and... those gloves, all the weird tubes... There's no doubt in my mind that was an Ishgardian Chemist set concept that they liked too much to just scrap when they replaced the job with AST. After all, Ishgardian Scholasticates don't wear the military-style gear of Nymian Scholars - they do wear robes. If it was purely an Ishgardian-style Scholar set, it would have been a robe.

It would, ideally, even out the Healer gear aesthetic between robes for WHM/AST and fancy jackets and chunky boots for SCH/CHM(APO?). Of course you'd be free to use the robes on your SCH, just as an AST would be free to use the medic-style gear, but there would at least be that choice. All we really have for the "combat medic" aesthetic right now, outside SCH artifacts, is the Baelsar's Wall set and the Arboretum HM set (which is just the Baelsar's gear shuffled around a little).

That's just my idea of chemist.

The mixing mechanics would be tough for a healer.
Imagine all your powerful insta heals are locked bhind it and a tank buster is about to rekt your tank.
Class would almost never been a main healer that's for sure.
Having to do a mudra mechanic as a healer would be too much pressure when you're the person that needs to keep the party alive.

People wanting chemist I feel like is a result of a few things.

1. People want a new healer job.
2. People want a different style of healer job.
3. People have much nostalgia for the first FF Tactics game.

Me IMO because Chemist was reliant on consumable items I would personally go with something based on the Flintlock from FFTA2 that supported party members via special cannon shells fired from their handcannon. (I also always found healer classes that healed partymembers or team mates by shooting them was humorous.)

I don’t think Oracle or Geomancer have ever been a healer in a single Final Fantasy game though. With the caster gear from the Ivalice raids even being the Oracle’s gear from tactics in look and name.

I never played some of the tactics knock offs but isn’t Devout just Whm+?

I think the only option we have left that isn’t “actually a caster” or just steps all over the toes thematically in the role is Chemist.

Also I wouldn’t count on the “lore overlap” of Geomancer and Astrologian because the only thing they have in common is drawing power from a “star”. Levava herself even refers to the classes as a foil to one another.

Oracle was a mixed healing and damage job in FFV actually. And Geomancer was part healer/support in FFXI.
And yes Devout is basically just better WHM, which is why I mentioned the overlap between existing classes. Really that list is just mentioning all the jobs that could fit the new healer, while fully acknowledging that only two would really work.

That I did not know about Oracle! So that’s always good to know!

Though Geomancer in XI wasn’t part healer. You got access to Indi-Regen at 15, and that’s it, that’s the healing capabilities. You could waste merit points at end game to “pop” your Luopans once every 5-10 minutes for a small burst heal, but at the expensive of actually useful merit points. You had no inherent healing capabilities. You were just support. Bard and black mage had a baby. They definitely meant for Geomancer to cast more than it ever did, considering they gave it an exclusive line of elemental magic and a passive that buffed your elemental casting capabilities depending on where you stood in relation to the target.

Devout was used as Lamitt/Lamimi's title implying that they are the First's equivalents to WHM, and thus knocking them out of the running for future jobs, (thank the Twelve).

There will never be a pure support so I wouldn't bother even thinking about.
Ffxiv and the way combat is, it wouldn't fit.
Debuffing bosses continuously won't ever be a thing.
Astro was the closest thing to support and now their cards are pure dmg boosts because everything else was inferior.

Every job in this game has some sort of support anyway.

Its something that in other FF games is a healer, or can be a healer, for that role we need a 4th of.

With Bard (this is still the biggest why? for 14) and Dancer being stuffed into the ranged dps pile, and Scholars being the "healy summoners, but not really" option, we're running low on established in-universe classes that can heal.


Unless they decide to go with Sage/Seer/Magus/Lunarian/Epopt (apparently you need a lot of names to mean "red mage but actually good at magic") or Oracle/Mystic (since theres no place for status effects as a class in 14) as a healer option, Chemist is the only thing you have left.

Oracle is weird. Its best known appearance made it a green mage without time magic. It was also completely overshadowed by the guy who could use those magics instant cast with his sword. In 5, it still handled most of the status magic, while also getting to be a red mage.


Devout in 3 was White Mage +, and was, if I remember FF4TAY right, the base version of Red Mage that Lenoria was before she got dualcasting and became Epopt, the Teenage Girl Red Wizard class (where Sage is Old Man Red Wizard, and Lunarian is Old Alien Man Red Wizard).

I wouldn't mind chemist but honestly, and speaking as a medical student, the idea of throwing potions, bottles or vials at a target to heal them seems so... so stupid. Like this ain't even a "that's so unrealistic" argument, no. It just sounds idiotic to be hurling glassware at people.

If they could perhaps come up with some other delivery method. Idk. Darts or some other projectile that'd be more precise and... not as likely to cause blunt trauma? lol

To shake up things in terms of how healers heal. Having a healer that relies on a different method to heal instead of through MP and burst heals seems interesting to me.

Because thats where the story currently is. As you pointed out the two new jobs from this very expansion werent directly tied to areas in it (though both of the first major characters to have those jobs were people on the First (Thancred and Lyna)).

Theres nothing that says Chemist would be tied to Norvrandt any more than Dancer or Gunbreaker were (in fact if next expansion goes to Garlemald as people think it will, then Chemist, as a non-magic job ties in very nicely with that area). But if they werent trying to hint at this they spent a very large amount of time on us helping her and her story as a whole.

I don't know, being able to chuck potions and items at your team was fantastically fun in Tactics.

I honestly thought we were going to go the "medic" route play on chemist due to the leader of the Bozjan front being a well performing Garlean medic before he defected. Would have been a fun way to implement chemist fantasy without throwing glassware.
