How is removing a 20% mitigation skill to let you use a 10% mitigation on yourself gonna make you less squishy? The great thing about Nascent/RI is that you get a choice - if you need extra mitigation to survive a buster you use RI, otherwise you can just use Nascent to heal both yourself and your co-tank. What you're proposing isn't a "slight nerf to utility for a personal buff", it's a pretty big nerf to utility and personal mitigation just to fix a minor annoyance with targeting.

If you feel squishy before 76 then you're doing something wrong, you already get Rampart, Thrill(now with a healing bonus), Vengeance, Raw Intuition, Equilibrium and Holmgang - use them.

Like i said 2 pages ago, all four tanks are currently pretty close in terms of balance. They're not perfect, they'll never be perfect.

DRK doesn't need more CDs, TBN is strong enough and 15s CD.

PLD's Clemency sounds good right? sure, but PLD loses DPS every time he uses Clemency, its the only tank exchanging DPS for Healing.

GNB is more something like a "DPS's gameplay into a Tank" with really good CDs (Heart of Stone is amazing).

I dont play Warrior this expansion.

I dont really care what tank is better at level 69...I play level 80 content.

At the end, all good tank players agree with the current nice Balance between tanks, so THANK YOU SQUARE ENIX FOR CURRENT BALANCE BETWEEN TANKS IN SHADOWBRINGERS

TBN is also absurdly powerful. They would probably nerf it into the ground they lessened the risk side of the equation.

So many false comparisons and cherry picking in this thread. Op talks about dps and utility and ignires personal defenses and immunities. War and drk easily outstrip pld and gun in personal cooldowns in endgame content for example, yet was entirely ignored. Comparing raw numbers of actions (gun has 3 drk has 2 oh noes!) Is always silly without including the POWER and frequency of those actions. Just tallyinh up ability bames on a spreadsheet and declaring winner/looser is a horribly bad way to compare jobs with far more nuance than that.


Fact: tank dps is the most balanced it has ever been and doing it with the most tanks the game has ever had at that. Can balance get better? Sure.but true parity will never exist unless they are identical.

Fact: party utility is also the most balanced its ever been. No longer does tbn compete against sio compete against veil/cover/passage/cures. Pld has more, but longer cds. Drk has less but they are strong with short cds. War middling etc.

Personal mitigation is reasonably close between tanks. Far closer than before. You have asymmetric balance between the job specific mitigation (DM, tob, camo, shield passive), but even thise are of similar power levels, but their functions/niches are a bit different. Even the imminities are closer with the holmgange timer nerf, though this area is where tanks are the farthest apart.

Taken together tanks are the most balanced they have ever been. Furthermore, this is arguably one of the most balanced tank lines in mmo history and im not exaggerating. Its really, really good right now accross the board.

There's always going to be a "last place" in terms of parsing. From what I understand, though, DRK (last place) and GNB (first place) are within a very small window. The difference is less than 5%? There is no dire need to buff the lower performers.

As far as utility, TBN is so powerful, it makes up for missing an extra button. This ability is just bonkers. As a PLD main (with a DRK almost 80), there's nothing like TBN.

That said, if SE decided a dps buff for DRK was warranted, I think a fun buff would be to Dark Arts: make it so the next Edge/Flood is 0 MP *and* is an automatic critical/direct hit.

For a utility buff to DRK, the only thing I'd like to see is Living Dead get tweaked. It has its use (you put it up, but it doesn't "start" until you would die, so you can kind of guarantee a full 10s of invuln time), but the fact that it kills you if a healer in your party doesn't fully understand how it functions is pretty feelsbadman. Maybe change the drawback to something less drastic than dying? Or remove the drawback, but change the "invuln" to a damage stagger (you take a % of the total damage dealt to you, but as a DoT over time)? Or maybe at the end of Walking Dead, you simply take X damage. It could be a % of your max health? Something you can mitigate, though, via TBN (or even Dark Mind, if it's spell damage). I'm just spit-balling ideas at this point.

You don't get the healing bonus on Thrill till 78 (we are talking about b4 76). I can't talk to how War feels at that point b/c I'm still only 77.

Also, Holmgang doesn't help with the Squishy feeling. It helps with survival and these are very different things. I have no problem with survival on War but feeling like my HP plummets like a stone is something that I noticed. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the OP nature of TBN the people complain about for whatever reason.

Since getting NF I haven't even touched Raw Intuition in dungeons (the only content I'm able to do right now). Basically I am able to pull the whole horde of mobs and then when my HP gets low I just pop NF and hit 3 Inner Chaos/Decimate and then I'm topped off. Other War mains I've talked to have done similarly. This isn't just trade 20% for 10%. This would boost NF to have the 10% on the skill for yourself while also letting you heal for 50% of the damage dealt. Being able to heal both is not all that valuable as you can already heal yourself with Equilibrium and Thrill. However, this does add a lot of healing that you can do for your co-tank. Are you sure that this would be considered a nerf?

By that logic Nascent doesn't help either - your hp will still drop, you just get a tool to bounce it back up and if you're using Nascent while you're still high on HP then you're just wasting the massive healing it provides on overheals.
Using Holmgang on big pulls lets you and your healer save cds until you actually drop very low, use Holmgang and then you can use a cd to heal up and lightly mitigate if you still need some time to finish off the pull.

How does it add healing? It removes healing if it only works on a single target instead of both target and you. Right now you can toss Nascent on your co-tank and you both get healed, which is great for any situation when you both take dmg, like the very common this tier double TBs, bleeds in e1s or double autos in e3s. With your version only you or the other tank gets healed, that's literally half the total healing you get right now. There's no gain in this other than if you're using it on yourself you're also getting 10% mitigation.

However you also want to remove RI which already does a way better job of helping you survive TBs than 10%+ healing on Nascent would do. Healing is great for sustained damage or recovering after you've already lived, but sometimes you need the mitigaiton first to actually survive - this is literally the issue of 2.0 WAR where they didn't have enough damage reduction for TBs in some cases and all their self healing didn't do jack to help that. Having both Nascent and RI to choose based on what you need is a clever way to avoid this issue without making WAR cd kit too overpowered.

Yes, Nascent is better for trash pulls and autos when paired with burst, but you can already use it for those things and it's not needed in lower level content, while RI is better for when you need extra mitigation for a heavy hit.
Right now we have a choice between two CDs which do their respective jobs greatly - you want to fuse them into one CD that's meh at both.

As happy as that would make me, that's busted beyond belief. The duality of TBN means it can never be DPS positive, or it must be a negligible amount of positive value. That's a disgustingly high potency boost.

I haven't played Warrior much yet, but this sounds about right. NF seems much better for healing through big pulls and "mitigating" fluff damage. RI is going to be crucial, though, in raids (and even some level 80 dungeon bosses) for dealing with the tank busters. Halving that to 10% (if NF could be cast on self for self-Glinting) is a pretty significant drop in self-mitigation for that content.

It's okay, though, to have abilities that excel in certain content vs others. As a PLD main and relatively new player (started in Feb this year), I didn't really get a chance to get into endgame stuff in SB. ShB has been my first chance. I thought Passage of Arms was hot garbage for the longest time (you can't move or attack or anything! what's the point?!). Then I started doing endgame stuff, where it's common for bosses to use party/raid-wide unavoidable attacks, and suddenly I wished PoA had half the cooldown I find it so useful.

PLD is a bit like this, too, with Sheltron and Intervention. They feel like "half of a whole ability" each. The "whole ability," in this case, is The Blackest Night. You're a DRK. You know how awesome that ability is.

Little tip - you can actually weave PoA between gcds and cancel immediately, while still applying the 5 second mitigation buff to anyone who was in range, which is perfectly fine for raid busters(same duration as Reprisal). It requires people to be already stacked behind you, but lets you use PoA without sacrificing any dps and any decent group should be stacking for heals during raidwides anyways. AST's collective Unconscious works the same way, except the Fortune Wheel regen actually gets full duration regardless.

Not disagreeing with you, as I don't know the math here: but do we know what % of our damage comes from Dark Arts'd Edges/Floods? At most, it's one every 15s. Realistically, it's probably closer to every 20-25s (as you need to wait to use TBN when you know it'll get broken). Checking FFLogs (and I might be doing it wrong here), looking at an E1S and E4S with a DRK in it, the DRK only cast TBN 4 times and 2 times, respectively. So in E1S, that was 4 out of 19 Edges + 7 Floods, or 4 out 26 attacks. In E4S it was 2 out of 41 Edges + 4 Floods, or 2 out of 45.

Given that a Crit is somewhere around 55-60% buff, and a DHit is a 25% buff, a Crit DHit is ~100% buff. But if you're only looking at anywhere from 2% to 16% of your Edges/Floods having Dark Arts, and Edges + Floods make up 13-15% of total damage in those two fights, you could be looking at something as low as a .26% increase in dps, up to a 2.4% increase in dps (overall).

My math here is pretty fast, so it could easily be off. But a 2.4% buff to dps isn't insane, right? Or is it?

Sounds like DRK was an off tank. Any info on fights where DRK was main tanking?

I question why the DRK would only be using TBN four times. There are numerous mechanics capable of breaking the bubble. It's even easier as MT because you have autos to help wear it down. It isn't something to be reserved only for tankbusters and emergencies. You should be using it whenever doing so won't be a DPS loss and you won't need it for something else during its cooldown.

That was my thought as well, but I haven't done the savage raids yet. I'll ping The Balance discord, though, and see if anyone has some better numbers.

EDIT: so after talking with the folks on The Balance discord, there's not really a set number of TBNs you'll really see. There are some attacks you'll want to use it on every time (ie Tank Busters), but there's a number of times you *could* use it, and it'll break, but it doesn't really serve much of a purpose. This could be because it's raid-wide damage, and healers are gonna have to pop raid-wide heals anyways, so you'd just be forcing overheal numbers. Situations like that don't cost the DRK anything, per se.

So that's the reason you might see such low number of TBNs. Those are the only vital attacks to shield against? And since you don't gain anything from using TBN to gain DA as opposed to just using Edge/Flood (outside of damage mitigation, which might be moot if your healer is doing raid wide healing anyway), it would just be easier to "sit on it" until you truly need it.

Which is another facet to buffing Dark Arts to give some kind of damage bonus, like auto crit/dhit. It would encourage using TBN as much as possible to boost your dps, as opposed to using it strictly as a defensive cooldown. Which isn't necessarily a good thing?

You can't really extrapolate from the current number of TBN uses. If TBN was DPS positive, especially to the extent that you're suggesting, then the number of uses would be far, far greater.

Just using my numbers and assuming only 2 TBNs, it's an extra 20,000 damage / minute, or around 333 DPS. This is i450, cheap melded crafted gear. If by some...ungodly manipulation you could get all 4 per minute, that's 666 DPS, or comparatively, around +10-11% of my theoretical damage.

Again, I iterate I'd be pretty okay with this as I am rather fond of Dark Knight. Not being like, mean or anything.

It's just disgusting in the best way possible.

Accounting for my baseline crit rating, closer to 9% or so.

More than enough to oust that Gunbreaker.

I edited my previous post with what I got from The Balance folks. Your point was more or less where I ended up, as well. Right now, TBN uses can vary, largely because there's a number of times it can be used but it doesn't need to be used. Make it a dps gain, though, and people will be using at damn near on cooldown (as long as they know it'll break).

As it stands now, appropriate TBN use is a dps gain *if* you're using it in a way that saves a healer GCD or two. A practical place you'd see this would be in ES1 during paradise regained for prey targets that get passed to dps, or ES2 for the Hell Wind+tower combo on a dps. It can also save a GCD for healing the MT of you're OT.

I'd like there to be a reward instead of simply resource neutral when TBN breaks, but it can't be as insane as an auto crit or direct crit. A small potency increase or perhaps mana cost reduction on the next Edge/Flood, something more indirect but still meaningful. Maybe 10% more potency, or the next Edge/Flood after DA is consumed have half cost.

The problem with making TBN a DPS gain instead of DPS neutral (or effectively neutral) as it is, is that it implicitly encourages you to eat more damage so you can put out more damage. Don't get me wrong, because I think that's pretty cool, but it doesn't work in a one-size-fits-all game where DRK has to play either MT or OT. I'll take TBN for what it is considering it's DPS neutral and also makes you laugh in the face of tankbusters.

Also, There is no "predicament" as far as tank balance goes. Yeah, DRK and WAR *might* need some extremely minor potency tweaks to bring them in line, but the difference in DPS between the weakest tank and the strongest tank amounts to roughly 2.5-3%, which is hilariously insignificant. There's also the fact that as Crit becomes more powerful, WAR's DPS will naturally increase as the patch cycle increases as the overwhelming bulk of it comes from their inner release window.

Only thing i want is for nf to have no target requirement. Onslaught not costing rage would be a plus. Mythril tempest applying eye would be nice also.

But nascent flash being self targettable is the big one for me. Especially for pvp.

Darkside - This Should give more damage, Currently it feels lackluster as a class Mechanic. What if Darkside had multiple stacks similar to greased lightning? So it would give 10%/20%/30% more damage for example. Overall Current Dark Knight feels lackluster compared to previous expansions and something like this would help.

Warrior - Remove Cost for Onslaught, Getting Your Beast Gauge Full gives the effect of Storms Eye.

the damage of darkside doesn't matter since current DRK dps is fine, his desing is more problematic that the damage that offer since is fine.

All three of these things would make a huge leap for WAR. I get you can just make a macro to toss NF on your OT/MT, but it seems silly to mandate that when dragon-eye is self-targetable now.

WAR is pretty terrible in 3/4 fights this tier. In E1, WAR doesn't get to 'hold' the boss the entire time, meaning they lose damage (vengeance) by not being a main tank while also having akward timing with IR during the fight. Same can be said for DRK in E1.

E2? WAR doesn't feel great while PLD just shreks that fight, seriously E2 was made for PLD and DRK is strong in that fight with Dark mind being actually pretty good.
E3... this fight was made for DRK/WAR. The WAR/DRK comp makes it to where you don't need to share TBs and just invuln all 4 TBs perfectly. However, WAR kinda has a problem where vengeance doesn't work for its damage (its all magical) so you don't use it, no point.
E4... E4 trashes WAR pretty hard, yeah you can holmgang it... but like Titania you have to cooldown the first hit and then holmgang the rest requiring more cooldowns and concentration from healers than almost DRK. However, I would argue DRK is worse in E4 than WAR because well... its almost all physical besides raid wide which is fine... but that makes dark mind a dead skill.
Now look at GNB/PLD. Where in any of these fights are they weak? Maybe Leviathan requiring them to swap during TBs. However, they are just better choices than the other choices (minus Leviathan).

Iirc, with the average ppgcd boosts to the combos alongside FC nerfs, Onslaught is a potency gain against pre-Enhanced Infuriate 590-pot FC, even against EI FC, and barely a potency loss at present (sub-40 potency). That's less costly than GNB's Rough Divide being used outside of No Mercy (i.e. just for mobility) or especially PLD's Intervene outside of Fight or Flight.

Quick question, for anyone, really: Would you prefer that self-healing skills had back damage-to-healing %modifiers of greater than 25%? I wonder what Nascent Flash/Souleater/Life Surge would look like each with a 100% modifier...

One thing i do want to mention...It all good saying x is good and y is weaker...in a vacuum...but we're not in a vacuum.
Yes, TBN is stronger...but to what end? Lets look at the current Savage content.

E1S - Eden Primes auto attacks, the tank bleeds, beams and spears all do enough damage to break TBN (Yes, even auto attacks. x2 of them is enough to break it) - It's the perfect fight for DRK, more or less. Even if you invuln-swap all the spears instead of splitting.
E2S - Auto attacks from voidwalker still provide enough damage to break TBN, and her auto attacks are also magical. Tank busters are also plentiful, making DRK the ideal MT in E2S.

Now...Here is the problem.

E3S - Leviathans auto attacks are PATHETIC and its very unlikely his auto attacks will break TBN before the duration is over. I've tried it, and most of the time TBN just fell off with only a sliver of shield left. In this fight, most of the time anyway, Rip tides (The tank busters, that only happen 4 times through the whole fight) are usually invulned and so TBN is useless. The only time its useful in that fight is during Black smokers, and even then any tank can survive it just fine and so bringing a DRK just for a single TBN usage is horrible.

E4S - Its better, but still not ideal. His main big bad tank busters for example...always invulned, pretty much, and so TBN doesnt factor in all that much, although i will admit my group is still progging on him so i dont have much else to say.

Sooo...TBN is great, but sometimes its simply TOO great to the point where in some fights bringing a DRK is sub-optimal, especially in fights, like in the current eden tier, where there is only enough tank busters in any given fight that you can count them on one hand, with the exception to E2S Levi has only 4 tank busters and so does titan as far as im aware. FOUR TANK BUSTERS OVER A FULL 10 MINUTE FIGHT, it's hilarious, and it just begs you to abuse invuln abilties to tackle them rather than use your actual cooldowns for them. It's also a problem that once the DRK is geared up enough TBN may no longer break from auto attacks in time, for instance.



That's just my two cents anyway...I do think DRK and WAR need damage buffs is nothing else to bring them a bit more in line so then there is actual choice in what tank to bring for each fight, might even encourage people to omni-tank rather than just level PLD and be done with it...Also, does anyone else find it weird that the two classes that have weapons that need to be wielded in two hands do less damage than the two that hold and use their weapon in one hand? Weird.

Getting your Beast Gauge to 100 isn't really something that happens that often, now that WAR has lost it's passive crit there's not much of a reason to keep your gauge high anymore. Gauge is constantly getting dumped on Inner Chaos' and Fell Cleaves in raid buff windows and Upheavel off cooldown, so getting an eye refresh off a full gauge is too inconsistent and thus inefficient. Storm's Eye is just a chore to work around, it needs a big change.

Wouldn't that be just as much justification to return the (prominence of) the skills which used to surround it and offered it increased control?

The nearly potency-even Onslaught used to play a part in that -- doubly so when increased gauge offered increased critical strike chance and Inner Release still included Rage costs to work around. Wouldn't it be as sensible to make the mechanic more integral, but more than proportionately more manipulable, as to streamline it?

I guess I'm just on the "if you can reach parity without homogeneity, do that, and when you already have parity, why homogenize further?" side of the fence.

I have to wonder if TBN, in some ways, might provide more rDPS -- including healer GCDs saved (not measured by fflogs) -- if it was reduced to 20% of personal HP, down from 25% target. Such would still give the same value as an emergency save tool against strong damage but would sacrifice maximal value for broader applicability. Given TBN's already absurd maximal theoretical value, that would seem reasonable enough.
