Someone questioned this in another thread, so I pretty much just copy and pasted my response with some changes.

Before Stormblood, Aetherflow originally was the only action that ACN/SMN/SCH had available (excluding Energy Drain) to restore their own MP. The original recovery cost was 20% instead of the 10% we get now, and there was no role action like Lucid as an alternative. Sure AF was used to deal damage/heal, but if no other player was in the party with Refresh capabilities (e.g. BRD/MCH) then it was something you needed to use it to manage your MP. After Lucid Dreaming was made cross-role it kinda made sense to reduce the effect of Aetherflow to 10%, otherwise that would of been a lot of MP being recovered. Let's say they did prune all those buttons into combo buttons, they'll probably just replace them with new skills and we're back to square one in regards to button bloat. I remember the last time they said they were pruning buttons and here we are. I'm skeptical they could even make this truly "optional," I feel like it would have to be across the board mandatory especially if they have to change class mechanics to fit all the jobs in since now you are affecting people that are playing the original version with no combo buttons.

I never said I knew this specifically was being considered, I said consolidation or removal was being considered, and you seem to have posted evidence of it.

I consider it a shame If it’s true combo consolidation is out of the table (according to that quote) but you are being awfully defensive over a speculation/wish thread. You won’t change my mind and obviously I won’t change yours, I still kind of would like to understand opposition but not to convince anyone.

Regardless, what we talk here is not going to change development paths. It’s not like YoshiP will come here, see my post, and say “hey, no one is jumping at his throat for wanting it... maybe I should implement what he wants!”

WHY do you want to make healing more difficult? This would just add more things to remember and complicate a rotation, which is exactly what Yoshi P is trying to get away from. I believe he said something akin to classes suffering from skill bloat and is looking for ways to reduce them. Plus, if they're going to add more skills from 70-80, they are going to have to cut things down.

But... But... healing isn't even that difficult if you have room to DPS for 80% of almost anything that isn't savage. Sometimes even savage.

Again... having a combo button wouldn't prevent you from weaving oGCDs... it just means that the next action in a combo replaces the previous action as you progress through the combo.

For those that play on gamepad it would mean being able to place the buttons for more oGCDs on their primary hotbar, thus making them easier to get to.

When Yoshi says "player skill" I imagine he meant the judgement about when to use abilities... but now we're having to fight with with remembering Cross Hotbar layouts on top of rotations, and Server latency not accurately reading double taps and releases for W Cross bars.

You know, if protect is something everyone always use at the start of a dungeon, and maybe refresh upon a Rez.... it may as well just be removed entirely from the game, and encounters balanced around it not existing.

Also lucid is an emnity control skill which is useful to these two classes too.

I don't understand why the hell people would want these combo buttons, set up propper keybinds and learn how to play with a controller instead of wanting to turn the game into a 1-3 button thing.

I would love that paladín had a change depending if he is in shield or sword oath.
In shield oath he can have the current one that is a sword and a shield, but in sword oath he could be able to dual wield swords, that will make sense in why the drop of defense and the boost in attack.

I expect them to fail at balancing the healers and taking everything else whm has and giving it to the other two and leaving them left with just their staff/cane to whack things. Then telling whms to just go play dancer. I expect drk and mch to also get no love and go backwards then where they are now just because they don't seem to know what the heck to do with those jobs. Maybe a rework of some of the job gages in where more of them actually make sense and aren't there to just be there.

that’s the fun of it. well again, an optional handicap mode is a very welcome addition. one of the reasons why pvp control is that way is so the amount of “player skill” required is reduced. hey button pressing is actually a skill now.

It was actually on the chopping block last expansion, Yoshi said no because its an iconic FF spell or something. If it was removed the damage would probably just be lowered across the board to compensate for not having the extra def/mdef.

No, you specifically said consolidation AND removal—not consolidation OR removal. Recheck your wording; if you meant to write the latter, you wrote the former.

The evidence I posted said consolidation will not be an option—the premise you posted originally was that you wanted PvP-esque combo consolidation to occur in PvE.

Instead, they will remove lesser used abilities to free up hotbar space over consolidating full combos, which is something a lot of jobs can benefit from (compare this to combo consolidation, which I already said will not really help the jobs that suffer the most from button bloat, particularly SMN and SCH, and AST also has a lot of buttons on its hotbars, what with all the card buttons). I can think of several abilities off the top of my head that should have been deleted (or never debuted) with 4.0’s release (One-Ilm Punch, Piercing Talon, Throwing Dagger, Repose, Fluid Aura, Blank Shot, Tether... to name a few).


There are a few instances where buttons could toggle into other buttons—similar to how Steel Cyclose/Inner Beast toggle into Decimate/Fell Cleave when a WAR is in Deliverance. For example, BRD could stand to have the Wanderer’s Minuet turn into Pitch Perfect while active. Straight Shot could also change into Refulgent Arrow while under the effect of Straighter Shot. That would free up 2 buttons there... but BRD is also a job that does not suffer from hotbar space issues.

That being said, I still do not see the need to consolidate full combos—I do not find jobs that have combos, like MNK, DRG, NIN, and SAM, to have serious hotbar real estate issues. If you find them to have issues, that may be because you are not using all of the hotbar options available to you as a controller player. I addressed those options already, and I still suggest you try them. Using the extended cross does not require any sort of nimbleness of fingers; it simply requires the ability to hold down both L2 and R2 at the same time—L2>R2 for one half of the extended cross, and R2>L2 for the other half.

I’m having a hard time understanding how I’m being defensive. You’re mistaken if you think I’m getting defensive in my responses to you; I’m just contesting your statement of it being something that is being considered with a statement that it is not being considered.

I’m also not here to change your mind—I’m just here to tell you that it’s unlikely to happen, as well as explain why it is something NOT on my wishlist for 5.0.

My issues with the skill consolidation is that it is—
1.) highly unlikely to be optional for only the players that want it—the development team seems to like streamlining experiences, so they would likely force it on everyone
2.) it will not work for all jobs—how do you consolidate combos for jobs that don’t have combos?
3.) it will likely not benefit those that need help with hotbar space (SMN/SCH/AST), as they are not jobs that have combos to consolidate—the exception here is PLD, which has really bad hotbar real estate right now, but it could also stand to have some things removed
4.) if the developers want to introduce completely new skills over upgrading existing ones, after the addition of new skills, it’s likely that we’ll still have the same number of abilities on our bars, so where did we truly go after the consolidation?


Honestly, I’d rather see skills upgrade into something stronger rather than us get 5 new skills. Changes like BRD’s Windbite/Venomous Bite upgrading into Stormbite/Caustic Bite are the things I would rather see. We don’t need new buttons to get new and stronger abilities. Some useless abilities need to be removed—some abilities also should be shifted down in terms of the level you learn them.


It’s my wish that a system like this does not appear in PvE, as I did not like it being introduced to PvP (I subsequently stopped participating in PvP with the change), and I will not like it being introduced to PvE. I simply think there are other, better changes the dev team could make to the battle system instead of consolidation—like addressing the imbalances between tanks, healers, and the physical ranged.

Healing isn’t difficult in this game—it’s quite simple because all damage in encounters is scripted and predictable.
Healer rotations are also very simple—DoT management + Malefic III/Stone IV/Broil II spam. Heal when needed, either with GCD or an oGCD.

I’m curious as to why you think healing is difficult, or that healer rotations are something particularly complex.

The ability to outplay, usage of the right skill at the right time and to read your opponent and knowing what the opponents class is skill. Guess why there is something like E-Sports they are just pressing buttons too. PvP is all about player skill, well here it is not anymore except for the one person that makes the calls, the others just have to follow.

It would allow more oGCDs to be placed on the primary bar for one.

I play on PS4 with a controller.

I consider the primary bar to be the 16 actions quickly accessible with either L2 or R2.

16 more actions (8 at a time) can be accessed via Cross Hotbar by holding either L2 then R2 or holding R2 then L2.

Finally 8 more actions (4 at a time) can be accessed via W Cross Hotbar by double tapping then holding either L2 or R2.


While Cross Hotbar is pretty reliable, sometimes there can be derp if I'm already holding L2 or R2 to input an action and I want to weave something in on a cross hotbar, but either I don't let go of the trigger in time (or server doesn't read it...) and I get the wrong crossbar up... W Cross Hotbar is a nightmare in intense situations. The more stuff that is happening, the more likely it seems that my double tap won't be registered. I already put my least used skills there, but about half the times I want to use them in an adequate emergency the bar doesn't appear.


So I for one, would use the new real estate on my primary bar for oGCDs from my crossbar and perhaps some of the emergency abilities from my W Hotbar that I tend to go to first.

I don't play with a controller so i can't go in debth with that but everyone i know who plays on a console doesn't have any problems doing so. Maybe you should try to play with mouse and keyboard if you are having issues with a controller. I'm sure someone who plays on PS4 can go further into that controller topic.

I mean, my issues are not so bad that the game is unplayable. But I recognize that consolidating buttons would exponentially increase the ease of use.

Because of how often action buttons are pressed in combat, that immediately necessitates that any actions used as part of combos go on to the Primary hotbar. So for most melee that means 40% - 50% of my primary bar has to be populated by the these combos.

For the most part my Cross Hotbars are populated by my CDs and weaves, and to keep it simple across all jobs I try to separate each side of the cross hotbar into defensive and offensive so it's easier to remember.

However that means for the most part my W Bars get the panic buttons, because they aren't pressed as often... but there's also a 50% chance that it won't appear so eh...


At any rate, consolidating the combos would mean I could promote some of my weaves and CDs from the cross hotbar to the primary bar so I could 1) get to the buttons faster and easier and 2) in theory, use them more often since the icons will be more visible to me so I'll know when they come off CD.

Derping and simply pressing the wrong button (or fat fingering) is something that can happen even on a primary hotbar (mfw I accidentally fat finger a song too early >.>), as well as on a Keyboard/Mouse. It’s fairly common with anyone, so I don’t really see it as an adequate defense for consolidation. Not to mention, it still won’t help jobs that cannot be squished into just 16 buttons because they simply don’t have buttons that can be logically consolidated (e.g., the casters, the healers, BRD, MCH).

You can try to better organize your hotbars if you find you have issues getting to important skills. This is how I did mine—the primary bar should be the most frequently used skills, with the first half of the extended cross being skills with second highest frequency (e.g., cooldowns, short-cooldown buffs) and the second half being skills with the least frequency (situational things, long-cooldown abilities, physical ranged LB). My hands tend to default to the R2>L2 hold first, so I’ve made it the “primary” extended cross, with L2>R2 being the secondary one since my hands don’t default to it first (could be because I’m right-handed is why that happens).

For cooldowns I don’t have on my primary bar, I have one of the regular hotbars set up just above my crossbar with them on it so that I can track cooldowns. It allows me to see that they’re coming off cooldown without checking my extended cross or shuffling through hotbars.

Since they are removing TP I HOPE that weaonskills will just no longer cost a resource at all. Meany you can AoE to your hearts content and Tanks can use their single target ranged attack, Tomahawk and Shield Lob, without causing them a chunk of TP. And since they are removing TP I think they have already confirmed the TP regen moves are going away.

Moves like Heavy Thrust and Hot Shot I expect to disappear. Especially Heavy Thrust.

Some of the more less used moves like Tether on RDM, the jump back move on BRD, movies like that I think will go away.

I think instead of getting new abilities we will get traits that upgrade old abilities into new ones. Which means while the rotation wont really change at least it'll look new? lol.

I "want" them to remove positionals but who knows on that one. Some people like them some people hate them.

I think they will remove Slashing, Piercing, and Blunt damage and just have Physical and Magical damage. That's HUGE speculation tho.

Maybe they will throw tanks a bone and get rid of vit accessories and have them share Maiming accessories? (Very doubtful tho.)

I expect them to have used samurai and rdm as a sort of test to see if more straightforward rotations and less emphasis on positioning would be accepted by the playerbase. If this is the case, then dragoon, mechanist, and monk (in particular) will experience some streamlining.

I expect the lack of a new healer to signify Square doesn't know where to go with the healers they already have in place, especially white mage. We'll see a rebalancing of healers, perhaps with another attempt made at giving each of them a unique flavor.

I expect them to give up on role actions entirely; unlocking all of them mid-stormblood is an admission of failure. Perhaps this functionality will be the source of "new" abilities in Shadowbringers.

I expect a strong reduction of the skillgap on every job, mostly by streamlining rotations and combining buttons, due in part to the average player's inability to do much more than put their pants on in the morning.

I don't want my expectations to be met.

I recommend setting up at least one for cooldowns—it is a godsend for cooldown/buff management since I don’t have to shuffle anymore. I set mine at size 80% so that it’s not too large and doesn’t take up too much space, which was an issue when I was on a laptop because 15” screen so smol. ;w;

dont touch my one inch punch, id actually rather them consolidate the combos, but it doesnt work for monk since there is a very good skill that allows you to ignore stances.

I tend to keep my expectations reasonably low when it comes to SE and this game's development because I have been burned in the past. So I guess I don't expect a whole lot but certainly hope for the best when it comes to making jobs play smoothly.

I haven't gone through all 8 pages, so I don't know if I'm the only pessimist in the thread, but I expect a huge $***storm probably even bigger than the one white mages did at the beginning of 4.0 this time around. I could be wrong, and if I am, great... but... something in my gut is really predicting $*** hits the fan. Will it be healers? Tanks or some other classes or a combination thereof? I don't know... but... yeah... I am expecting a lot of blowback in May.

I'm just worried the lack of tp and the reliance on mp for everything is gonna screw people hard.

I suspect it'll be dark buttons all around.

Yeah this is probably one of my biggest worries too. I'm sort of scared of what this means for bard in particular, especially where foes is concerned.

I doubt they would just remove all resource cost from physical AoE but keep Spell based AoE flaring MP. Either a different resource may be needed, AoE will end up getting a cool down, or they will become combo finishers.... or spell based ones may stop costing MP.... but I really feel it would be very unbalanced to leave the Spell based AoE costing MP when physical ones go free.

Realistically, nothing that didn't use MP before won't suddenly be using it now unless they're doing an entire overhaul over every aspect of the combat system (which I suspect these combat changes are not going to be anywhere near that level of scale, based on stormblood's 'battle system changes'). The most realistic thing they're gonna do is just remove TP costs so physical attacks no longer need a resource of any kind to function, since outside of AoE or being freshly revived, TP was impossible to bottom out on any job unless the fight dragged on for eternity thus rendering it basically pointless. They'd also have to severely re-balance and revamp DRK, PLD, BRD & BRD (and technically they'd have to design dancer to account for it) due to the jobs using both MP & TP.

So we'll have spells continuing to use MP, with every physical move being resource free (outside of gauge moves).

The most realistic thing they're gonna do is just remove TP costs so physical attacks no longer need a resource of any kind to function, since outside of AoE or being freshly revived, TP was impossible to bottom out on any job unless the fight dragged on for eternity thus rendering it basically pointless. They'd also have to severely re-balance and revamp DRK, PLD, BRD & BRD (and technically they'd have to design dancer to account for it) due to the jobs using both MP & TP.

So we'll have spells continuing to use MP, with every physical move being resource free (outside of gauge moves).

No... AoE skills are going to have to require some sort of resource. War would be absolutely OP broken with Berserk Overpower spam in any low level content...

I feel like since all jobs already have an MP pool that will be the resource... with Melee/Physical jobs that already use MP (PLD, DRK, BRD) getting an adjustment to the costs of their existing spells and abilities.
