Implement a lottery for house plots

I do not have the answer to everything. There will always be people who wii have a leg up over others. But in the context of our current broken system this is the most fair idea I can think of for what we got right now.

But it's not fair and that is what people are trying to point out. In regard to FCs as it stands right now ALL FCs are on equal footing, and you can bet that any FC that wants a place or to upgrade has been planning this for months. Thus they are guaranteed to have someone with time off. With your system you put smaller FCs at a severe disadvantage to larger FCs that can just throw numbers at the lotto system. While it sucks, the way we have it now quite literally puts all FCs and all individuals on as equal a footing as possible.

What? I am not sure you understand with what I even posted. It will lower the odds to those who can make that window of time to log in and attempt the rush. What it basically does is expand that window out for a longer period giving more people time to put in their bid.

Fair assessment. This type of change at this late in the game is pretty much not going to happen. I would be for future plots having a form of lotto system in place. And I think most small FC's would be inclined to agree with me if they gave it a bit of thought. Most small FC's I know of who got housing got it through people reselling plots at blown up prices. It is working against smaller Free Companies but this system gives possible chance at earning housing on more fair prices then having to shell out over a billion gil for a large house on Balmung. And in all honesty most casual FC's will be disadvantaged no matter what is done with the system as is.

The only discussion that should be happening regarding housing right now should be "when are they going to realize that instancing is the only realistic way to make everyone happy?"

Not "what is the best way I can get an advantage over those nasty other people who already own houses?"

Not sure how it makes it worse. RNG to get in, RNG to not be locked out, RNG to be the faster of the click... Instead of hoping RNG favors you in this shitty kind of a way, ya just make it so the RNG has to be decided by the system.
Result is still the same, someone gets lucky and gets the housing, others are left to bitch and moan why they woke up so early to log in and still get shafted, thus then start posting how irate they are on the boards, and the cycle continues ever since like last time, with nothing changing cause SE doesn't give two hoots.

Also, for the lotto system itself, restrictions would need to be placed on the system to be effective. Can win only one plot of land, if you submit and win multiple plots, you must decide which plot and the rest are then redrawn for others, leading to other players getting a second chance. And a few others to prevent gaming the system. The only factor that should be deemed to make you eligible is if you have the cash to make a bid, rest should be just done by the system cause we will be waiting ages to honestly see a 'real' fix.

So how about people stop trying to say 'no it can't or won't work', and instead stop and think how it could be made to work.

But yet by your logic that would actually make things worse. If we are going by what you are saying less people having a chance for a plot is a better system. Not sure what being on Balmung has to do with such a silly narrow view of things but I guess a emotional response beats no response... Or does it. Hmm. Yes I do agree the only real discussions should be regarding the current situation on housing at large. But frankly for four years it has not changed for the most part and I am not sure if it will ever change. Until then a system that gives EVERYONE a chance with a larger window to log in and make your bid in a week time is more fair then what we have. Some caveats will exsist and that is why a meaningful discussion for possible methods to make things more fair with what we got beats the midnight gold rush.

How is it more fair to make getting a plot being 100% based on luck? I worked hard to get my house. I didn't win the patch day lottery of logging in and I didn't randomly stumble upon many millions of gil. I worked for months to be able to afford a house and I faithfully camped the aetheryte waiting for a demolished plot.

The current system sucks but your suggestion would make it even worse. Your post reeks of someone who hasn't got a house and just wants to punish anyone who has a better chance than they do of getting one.

Why not pour your energy into thinking of a way that would benefit all players instead of simply changing who gets a house?

The real question is which is more fair? A narrow window of a few minutes logging in to claim a plot initially or a more broad window that gives more people time to log in and place a bid themselves.

I empathize with your situation because you are not the only one who has gone through that. I also have done the exact same point you made. I have bought many houses since the first days that housing opened up. I think you are making a mistake trying to make things personal. The point is to create a way that benefits more people because the current system only supports a small amount of players. I am not saying it is a fair system but a .001% chance is still a better chance then none at all which covers most of the players forcing them to go through the same scenario you currently went through. I am only speaking about the initial rush for housing plots which most of the playerbase cannot participate in. As said above entire countries and time zones are disadvantaged. This method itleast removes such restrictions. Its more of a casual/real world time line constriction over in game advantages.

Seriously curious, it is the same garbage just piled different. Current system you RNG luck out and login before someone else, lottery RNG you get picked over someone else. Last batch of wards multiple PCs plus accounts and different locations coordinated tried to get a FC house. The login system is not so great that it is anything but chance. Also they won't have extra GMs/devs on watching the purchases of the house to try to make sure people aren't abusing what little system is actually in place. I don't think either answer is good I just don't see proof that the old login RNG is better.

Also people that say larger FCs have an advantage in lottery. How each FC gets a number a number is drawn one to one. This isn't about people getting extra chances its about everyone who wants one getting one chance. The only argument you could make is someone with alts at appropriate level would get more then one.

I am going to go out on a limb (a small one). The login server will have a horrible que and will repeatedly kick people out so being 200 in que means nothing. I haven't seen anything from SE to suggest that they have planned anything to stabilize logins? If I have missed it please link for others. I am sure the only post will be "if maintenance is done early we won't be bringing servers up early". I truly feel sorry for people getting up early or staying up trying to deal with this system.

They're the same thing. RNG based. The only thing your suggestion does is increase the amount of competition (since everyone can bid) and by extension, disappointment. Which isn't an improvement.

The endgame is that someone gets lucky and gets a house, and everyone else will whine about it. Exactly the same thing that'll happen tomorrow.

I already said that is a much larger and glaring issue. I agree with you 100% but once more 4 years of constant threads about the current system has yet to produce any changes. What we need are changes that itleast makes the CURRENT system a little more bearable. Any increase that lets a larger swath of players get a shot at something is still heads over better then what we got. Not sure what about that is an issue with you? Once more you are speaking of a situation that for 4 years has resulted in nothing despite small nods like apartments but I am after realistic ideas that SE may consider that makes tweaks to what we already have. What SE is more willing to implement to somewhat fix a broken system.

And several points no one seems to make is this current system supports gil selling and RMT more so then a lottery system would. Who is more likely to log on to beat the rush. Someone whos livlihood based on RMT sales or people who play a game for fun but would still have a week to log in to itleast have a shot at a plot sale at a reasonable price.

This is because of the implementation of FC Workshops, Diadem and content which would cause you to lose all progress if a FC wanted to move.

The reason why no substantial changes have been made yet is because they needed to introduce the ability to move with the new Housing area.

By adding the new housing area and the ability to move they first need to see the results before they decide to add more housing.

Once the results are in I am confident they will push to add in more housing because now they have the means to allow players to move if they wish as well as introduced the 4th Housing Location.

I get the frustration that it's taken this long but you have to understand a things for a logistics point of view. Sure maybe they could blindly double the amount of housing locations they have but then what happens if 50% of them don't get used? Then they've wasted resources that could be better spent elsewhere because they can't just remove these wards because they're not being used.

They have to be smart with how they implement additional wards and that means seeing how Shirogane fills up before considering additional wards.

Lets be real here. Players desperate for a house won't really care if a system supports RMT if said system gives them a better chance of getting a house. Sure your system would lessen the support for RMT but it would also reduce the chance for players to get a house. On the latter alone it's a major fail from the player's perspective.

Also there aren't enough houses to be the bulk of support for RMT. There are plenty of other gil sinks. Some gear cost more than a house.

I don't see how a lottery could benefit the player base as a whole, none of your examples actually work to support your arguments.

-The total pool of eligible people does not change between what we have now and your lottery. Its fine for you to say programming magic to filter out or prioritize people but in reality thats impossible to do fairly; a program can't see whats actually going on to be able to judge all edge cases and make an accurate assessment of who should be prioritized over someone else. So the only result from this is SE is unfairly picking who should have a house and who shouldn't. That is worse than what we currently have.

-The amount of time people have to get a house in your system would be set to 1 week. Currently we have as much time as we want to get a house and on some worlds there were houses left open after a week so you'd only be making it worse for them. Are you going to suggest treating players on one world differently than on others? That would be playing favorites and end up worse than what we have now.

-The current system gives players control over when and how they try to get a house. Your system removes that control and replaces it with RNG. This doesn't make for a better system for the players, removing control is a bad thing. Always. You can claim its still random if you get in or not but thats not true, it just appears so. You log in at X time, if there are Y people ahead of you then you wait your turn. its not a random number thats generated, thats competition for the same resource. A player still has control over when and how fast they try to log in to get a house. Just because the housing resource is limited it does not make it random if you get it.

-The claim that some players are at a disadvantage due to the time is irrelevant. Here's a couple pertinent facts to consider: 1 the maintenance patch must end at some point in time. 2. that time will be inconvenient for someone somewhere no matter what the time is. 3. Access to servers can't be staggered by time zone because multiple time zones can access the same server. 4. Because all times are equally valid in that scenario, you do the patch when your business is open. (this is the same for all patches, not just housing). 5. Players knew when this patch was going to hit weeks ago, they all had plenty of time to make arrangements to make sure they could log in if they chose to do so. 6. If players can't make time for it, thats not the fault of the developers and the developers are under no obligation to make changes for each special case.

-Your world has too much competition to get a house. This is a player created problem and your lottery system doesn't alleviate it in any way. it only changes it from log in to get a house to roll a die to get a house. Your odds of getting a house don't actually improve by having a week long lottery because you're still competing against everyone else that is in the market for a house. If anything it will lower your odds because those people who couldn't make time for the patch, can now buy into the lottery for it.

-Lotteries are not more fair than first come first serve. A lottery itself is a fair system for distribution but in this case you're removing players from being able to control when and how they try to get a house. See previous comments about that.

The ONLY thing your suggestion does is change when you try to get a house. It does not improve the system for anyone and would make it worse for some. You are trading the headache of waking up early to get the house with RNG to possibly get a house.

I am not saying it is the best idea but you assume an awful lot. The current system gives some control yes but only to the top end as it stands. The lottery would shift it out of the hands of people who manipulate the system (against the tos mind you) to flip houses for a profit. I am not going into specifics but there are several third-party pipelines were such houses are advertised and when you have around 50 for sale at all times on Balmung despite how easy it should be to track and punish the people nothing is really done about it.

To say that Balmung created its problem is also twisting words wrong. It is not Balmungs fault that people who were on here for a year before ARR was even released should be forced to move if they choose not too and there is already an unfair discrepancy from one server to the next. Higher prices are proof enough of that. The amount of time it would take for certain people to get a house would still be near the same. This is only changed for the initial rush of plots to give people who have the gil for the property but not the means of time. Having to do a rush against an entire server in a game centered around casual play is going against its own themes.

And finally, server imbalances is also unfair by nature of population competing. This idea is just that an idea. It can be altered to only have a lottery for those worlds that they are constantly restricting new character creation on and still leave the smaller servers alone if need be. And yes the pool of eligible people would change because of the first come first serve setup we have now it would keep prices lower at the cost of an overall lower % for certain people who have the means and the methods to find these houses. And no our current system is quite unfair. It's the same people that get the plots for the most part. Its the norm over the exception because I have bought houses in the past from said people before it even became against the tos.

i kinda find all kind of RNG specially in game disgusting so ill say no to this.

Worst idea I've ever heard. First come first serve at least rewards effort, no one should ever get anything as major as this just because luck decided it.

I am all for an effort/reward system. But as it stands it is just as much a lottery getting into the server first than it is doing an actual lottery. If you are one second off you are stuck in a 500 queue and you can kiss the plots goodbye on the more populated servers.

If you really wanted to reward people who worked hard, it should be a 24 hour auction, with potential buyers being able to bid whatever they want for each plot. That way people who worked hard and got a lot of money can get what they want and people with less will have to settle for a less desirable plot. That would be the fairest system I could imagine* and would help fend of Gil inflation.

*under the pretext that plots will be kept in limited supply.

I did not say players had to move but if players chose to remain on a known overpopulated server then those players need to deal with the consequences, such as increased competition for resources and longer queue times when the server is busy. Either way, the casual nature of this game doesn't really have anything to do with that and has nothing to do with buying a house. If a player wants to try for the house, they have ways of doing so. Your lottery removes those options for no benefit to anyone. The only thing you're trying to do here is leverage a system to increase the chance for you or your friends to buy a house instead of letting them work to buy it along with everyone else.

Its unfair that people on an empty server have less competition than those on the most populated server? If its so unfair and housing is such a priority for you then move. Many people felt that way and did move when the transfer bonuses were implemented. Those that chose to stay were explicitly accepting the overcrowded nature of the world and all the consequences of such. By choosing to accept that you forfeit any claim on it being unfair compared to other worlds. You had the chance to move and declined. First come first serve is the only fair way for players to buy housing within the system as it is currently.

SE will not create a separate lottery for each server because that would be playing favorites and they won't do that. The only reason they've done it with the creation/transfer incentives is because they were worried about the health of their servers...which if they don't make that a priority, we don't have a game to play in. Housing comes nowhere near that level of importance.

How does the lottery change the price of housing? that's set by SE not the players and its uniform across all worlds. The price won't lower just because there's a lottery. If you're referring to house flipping again, the lottery won't change that either. Players can sell their plot for whatever they think they can get away with. That they got the plot from the lottery or standing in line changes nothing about that. Also, the people that are buying the plots now, have the same chance as everyone else to buy them, that also wouldn't change under the lottery because there's no way for SE to effectively stop them from entering and flipping.

And no, I think the current system is bad and does need an overhaul. I just think your lottery is worse.

the only thing it will solve is it flattens the chances to random for every initial release of housing. Unless ALL house purchases are lotteries, in which case you're going to have some poor shmuck who has the worst luck and NEVER gets a house even though they've been there for every house available.
We need a solution that gives EVERYONE access to the gaming features the houses provide. I think all this would do would be to frustrate MORE people instead of less.
RNG-sus is not kind to some of us and we refuse to bow to him.

The last thing we need is RNG housing plots. In the pantheon of dumb ideas, this is quite possibly the dumbest one yet. Except maybe the Shake Weight.

I really feel they should have some wards set aside for FC housing only and then the rest of the wards for personal housing.

The only "fair" way to deal with housing is to get rid of the housing entirely and just give everyone instanced apartments that they can expand with cash shop money. That's not very fun though. The alternative requires a sort of Minecraft/Landmark solution where you simply get a large housing "area" and you claim a chunk of land (to place your house "instance", which all editing takes place in the instance except when outside) and when all the land is used up, another housing instance pops up. Unfortunately it's not a solution to bots and RMT jacking entire instances.

Basically no game has ever solved the housing problem and it's unlikely that it can be solved without identity tokens attached to all users.

Lotto system isn't going to help the actual problem. That there isn't enough housing for the amount of players that want housing. Adding another set of Wards to all districts would probably be what is needed.

I support the more plots idea. Or at least add more to the most crowded servers, based on each server's population. I understand some servers might still have empty wards, so SE could simply not bother with these.
I don't know how hard it is to implement more wards in just some chosen servers, but considering that housing prices used to be different server-wise, I imagine it can't be too hard.

Housing is a problem, and it is creating a lot of frustration, indeed.

I own a house in Lavender Beds and I love my neighbourhood, it makes me feel like I actually live in such a place (also, my neighbour up the hill has a very nice Paissa house that I always stare at from my garden).
Losing that all would be heartbreaking.

OP seems to want to target house flippers who greatly abuse the current system. Well his suggestion would replace one problem with another. Lottery would eliminate house flipping but it also means people who only have a vague interest in owning a house have equal chance to those who want it more than anything. The housing salt would increase tenfold. This lottery ignores the real problem; severe lack of plots.

Any suggestion that only adds restrictions is only going to make housing worse. OP's idea only adds restrictions.
