I know many japanese adventurers in Eorzea and it takes some time to answer in blogs in kanji characters using Google, so I've always been wanting to ask you some quick tutorial on terms. And just 1 hour after I posted my All Saints' Wake journal entry, you created this Topic...!

These must be the infamous Sublimen Psychic Powers the legends speak of!

If one day you'll have the time (not immediately, of course, as there're a lot of terms, but if you can also in the far future, I check this Topic every now and then), I'd be interested in knowing these other translations in kanji/romaji.

P.S.2: Is there a reason why in Japan a single adventurer is called Sublimen (men, plural, like in your signature) and not Subliman? I always use Subliman for myself.

Slightly off topic, how the heck do you use japanese characters ingame? For some reason I cant figure it out. I can type it with my keyboard thanks to good ole microsoft but how do I get that to work in the game? Do I have to go into my control panel and activate it for specific programs?

If you got Japanese IME on your PC can't you just do it like regular? ALT+~ to switch to hiragana input? If it's not on JP and still on EN keyboard settings then might need to do ALT+Shift to switch to JP first then ALT+~

I didn't try this on NA locale settings so maybe can't type Japanese on NA language mode through config maybe??? I know you can copy/paste the JP text so was guessing you can also type in JP on NA language mode as well.

You can type through the IME in the game just like you do any other way.

The tricky part is you need to have your chat log active before you try and switch inputs. Switching your IME without a active text box will cancle it out as soon as you start inputing any characters giving the illusion that it doesn't work. But it does work I type Japanse in XIV all the time.

If I recall correctly, there is a drop down menu under Regional and Language settings where you need to set Japanese as the language to use for non-Unicode programs. You may need to set this before you can type in Japanese in FFXIV?

I don't think that's needed for FFXIV (not sure) but I thought that's only for programs that has stuff like JP menu and stuff.

Oh, sorry. ^^;
I always need to make sure that is set because my OS is English, and I thought that setting was necessary to use Japanese in many programs.

Thats the part I was missing! I tried using IME but it didnt work lol...ill test it out when servers are back online

Can you translate "Change to (job) please?" or "Do you have (job)?"

That's the only thing I ever really have trouble communicating. :P

Also this is just to help out get events and stuff going but here's one for the Ifrit runs which I posted on other thread but might be useful for others.

Did 3 runs last night with open invites and on the party recruit system.
1. Leave purpose and location at default.
2. Set up the party - make sure to put the class/jobs you need and set it to 50-50 so you don't get someone lower
3. In the comment section type copy/paste this.

I joined a JP Aurum Vale party and I learned a quicker route through it along with some ideas of boss tactics, and I couldn't figure out a way to express my thanks.

Also, if you could Translate the names of the Coincounter (Cyclops) ws's, specifically "Eye of the Beholder" (The AOE WS that only hits you if you are really far away) and "100-ton Swing" (the AOE ws that does like 4.5k+ damage). I have 2 JP players in my LS that speak ok English and not being able to tell them what to do for specific WS's sucks if they JP name is different from the english name =(

Reinhardt: maybe you can post a definition of the differences between the four forms so that players unfamiliar with japanese may understand why and when to use which?

Subliman works I guess but I know I'm not alone and part of the League of Heroes in Subligar (Hentai Sentai Sublimen!) so I just use Sublimen... w... (Wish they had 5 different colors... Red, Black, Blue, Pink, Green... like power rangers)

"In the future, we'll do it again" is more like 今後もまたやります - Kongo mo mata yarimasu
We'll do it next time - また今度やります - mata kondo yarimasu
We'll do it later - また後でやります - mata atode yarimasu
Will continue to do this in the future - これからも、またやるつもりです - korekaramo mata yaru tsumori desu

I used to have my own one I made in flash (was crappy imo) but here's Hiragana/Katakana chart for any of you interested in how to read basic Hiragana/Katakana... http://www.tofugu.com/2010/01/07/hir...-for-download/

now Kanji's really can't help you much aside from really basic stuff + from you memorizing the words/translations of words posted on here. Used to tell my friends to do this if they wanted to learn Japanese, specially easier now since they have English version of the manga comics.

Get a hold of same manga comic in JP and NA and compare them. Easier manga's have furigana (how to read) next to the kanji characters so you can learn how to read + look at the NA one for meaning. (unless you're bored and want to look through the dictionary every time...)

Also related to time, the @ symbol ("atto" in Japanese) is often used instead of 後 or "ato" (after/in).

Examples:
＠15分　-- ato jyuu-go-hun (in 15 minutes)
リキャ＠４分 -- rikya ato yon-hun (recast in 4 minutes)
レイズ＠２分 -- reizu ato ni-hun (raise in 2 minutes)

Or other uses:
＠3人 -- ato san-nin ((full PT) after 3 people)
＠1回 -- ato ikkai ((after) 1 more time)


One more good symbol to know when talking about time is 半 or "han" meaning "half".

９時半 -- ku-ji han 9:30
1時半 -- ichi-ji han 1:30
