I heard Dark Knight is based on Guts from the Berserk manga.
(PS darn if only Berserk Manga can update decently again :( )
There's a quest called "The Ceaseless Gardener" which is pretty much like the movie "The Constant Gardener"
The tool-tip text for the fishing bait Red Balloon, "A bright red breed of balloon bug found floating at higher elevations than its duller cousins. Live bait for both skyfishing and cloudfishing. Up to 99 red balloons can be stacked together." references the old 80's classic 99 red (english version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPOAeDBH1_U) /luft (german version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsU8fRvTeCI) balloons song by Nena.
If you got this you probably remember this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INROfoYYzCo
There is a FATE called Olympus has Pollen, reference to movie Olympus has Fallen.
The FATE chain in the Dravanian Hinterlands: "Metal Gears Rising" to "Metal Gears Revengeance" and culminates in "Metal Gears Reveangance 2" in which you fight a giant Vangob machine. It's a pretty obvious reference, heh.
The big FATE "We Fought a Dzu" is a reference to the Matt Damon movie, "We Bought a Zoo".
"Prey Online", the world FATE in Azys Lla is, I think, a reference to Sony's Play Online feature for the PS2.
Aside from the Baron Circlet, Baron Helm & the Kain Highwind minion being a reference to FF IV/ II, the final line in the letter that gives you the CE items is "May they take you back to a time when two was four and four was two." I thought that it was a nice touch for an additional reference to FF IV.
When Cid Garlond said something like, "Fool of a Lalafel,... something something something... your stupidity will get you killed."
Reminded me of, "Fool of a Took, why don't you throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity."
Once I saw that I was like omg whatever Gandalf.
Update: Just recently did the Lv.60 Astrologian Job quest, and it was titled "The Star of our Faults".
In the Churning mists, the moogle chief is named Moglin. A possible reference to FF Type-0 in which the moogle assigned to class zero is dubbed Moglin by Cinque.

The dark knight class has been in the franchise since 2. The dark knight itself might be a callback to the black knight of Arthurian legend.
Nice catch, but a slight clarification is needed - PlayOnline is actually owned and operated by SE, not Sony (they originally developed it as the network/portal for all their planned online games, starting with FFXI). It didn't work as well as they'd hoped though and nowadays is only used to access FFXI. But that is definitely a POL reference. :D
Another SE reference - the Deepeyes enemy in Coerthas Western Highlands is obviously a reference to the name of Gray's military unit in the FF film FF The Spirits Within. ;)
More film and book title references:
The main story quest 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' is obviously taken from the novel and film of the same name.
The name of the FATE in Western Coerthas 'The Polar Express' is again clearly taken from the title of the children's book and film.
A more obscure reference is the name of the achievement 'Lucky Number 7' (for completing the 'Divine Intervention' main scenario quest) - this is possibly a play on the title of the film Lucky Number Slevin.
Did any one Mention the Lv56 Paladin quest Hey Soul Crystal is more likely a Train song.
How to feed your Dragon.
Land of the Freeze
Don of the Mylodons (either Dawn of the Dead or Planet of the apes?)
The Mourning After (80's film The Morning After)
Stamp the Yard
Blunders in Dragonsitting (Adventures in Babysitting??)
Come to my arms (Judy Torrez Come into my Arms so '80s)
Otherwise a whole bunch of fates read like reworded puns. Special Tarasque Force, Drone Under, Like Gnaths to a flame,
there was a sidequest i did in the churning mists, i had to slay 3 or 4 mist biasts i think, to get a Drake tail item. the item description of the Drake tail said something like, it might be just a Drake tail but it's the best you've ever had. referencing a song
Ravana tribe comes from FFXII the Urutan Yensa, and some other puns I don't remember but there were a ton about how to train your dragon.
havent read them all but the pages i did read im surprised no1 mentioned...
I HAVE THE POWER!!!!
come on now best cartoon as a kid ever XD unless im just old lmao
My favorite so far is the FATE in Azys Lla, "Do Spinners Dream of Electric Rooks?". A refernence to Phillip K Dick's classic sci-fi story, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". The enemy you fight is even called Spinner-Rick after the main character, Rick Deckard. :)
During the lv 60 bard quest in the solo instanced fight you do there is a Futurama reference. :3
One of the npcs says to the boss (siren clone) "Your music is bad and you should feel bad." Referencing Zoidberg.
How do these puns get translated into other languages? They're so specific to American culture. I'm sure maybe the name of the FATE changes, but I doubt the names of the mobs/bosses change. Especially like "It isn't Lupus..." with the giant Cancer crab.
There's a FATE in the Dravanian Hinterlands called Cockatrice Block.
In Ul Dah, by the Alchemist guild, there are two young NPCs sitting at the fountain. One says, "No manner of alchemy can bring our father back." The other replies, "But there must be a way! There has to be!". Might be a Full Metal Alchemist reference? (besides that they say 'Father' instead of 'Mother'....) Might not be? /shrug Just happened upon these two while unlocking aetherytes on a newer alt
Stan lee/Marvel reference cid calls he's new ship Excelsior!
Dunno Stan lee says it a lot tho
Or maybe it's just that it means "always higher" so it fits nicely Heavensward.
Depends on who you ask. Excelsior was in Star Trek III (1984), "The Enterprise" was the name of the starship since the beginning. Cid's airship has also been called the Enterprise in other FF games which again is a nod back to Star Trek. It's far more likely the upgraded ship Excelsior is a reference to Star Trek III.
As a related reference, the Greek Alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma) quadrants in Azys Lla are ALSO Star Trek references. The rest of the games maps don't follow this logic.
Like for a whole 5 minutes there was an endless train of Star Trek references that I stopped paying attention to them.
The NPC Nodes all around the Azys Lla map are a combination of IVR (Interactive Voice Response) type of messages combined with fragments of "Terms and Conditions" like you would agree to while using websites and computer software.
Aetherochemical Research Facility, Enforcement Droid 210 - reference to Robocop's ED 209; and dont forget the DBZ-like fusion the bosses do.
My boyfriend pointed this out to me last night, but there is a very subtle but effective reference to real-world history in Coerthas Western Highlands - in the north-eastern corner of the map (the frozen lake at Lancegate), there is a ship frozen in the ice of an unusual design not seen anywhere else in Eorzea (a kind of paddlewheel steamer), called the 'North Star'. Not really strange, except if you stand near it's bow you then notice it was bearing straight towards a giant rocky spire jutting out of the lake when the lake froze over (which has the appearance in the blizzard of an iceberg). This obviously is a reference to the famous ill-fated Titanic which, naturally hit an iceberg on it's maiden voyage and sank - the Titanic was owned by the North Star Line.
Coincidence? Maybe, but I like to think it's a reference to the Titanic disaster. ;)
EDIT: and doh! I think I really need to check my information - the shipping company that owned Titanic was the White Star Line, not the North Star Line. Still, the ship in the ice in Coerthas Western Highlands does still seem to be a subtle reference to Titanic anyway. ;)
Smell like tree spirit
There is a quest in the Helix that makes you fight an Enforcement Droid 208, clearly a reference to Robocop's E.D 209. Thought this was an awesome reference.
A million times this. The music and the cut scenes are the best in the game. FF1 is the first game I ever played on the NES and I used to just stay in the cave listening to the music. And the lady doing Matoya's voice is just on point with her delivery.
Now find a way to incorporate Terra's theme within the Lore of FFXIV! :P
Her "overworld" theme, or the "Esper" theme? :)
There's a few ways actually.
First... consider for a moment that FFXIV is all about "beastmen" and Terra is half human and half "esper" ... AND the Garlean Empire (and the Allag's) are all about not respecting life. So there's at least three ways that can be done.
eg Espers = Primals. We know that already, but in the context of FF6 they were simply another species in another world. We already had Lady Iceheart/Shiva do this half-mortal/half-Primal bit already.
So the next logical answer is finding someone who can do this already... or the Garlean/Allags did already. Like in FF6... it's never clear stated how they captured "the witch" just that she burned a bunch of the soldiers before being captured.
Like all things considered FFXIV may as well be a spiritual sequel or parallel to FF6. Between the Garlean Empire, Phantom Train, Warring Triad, the War of the Magi, Magitek, Relics, Mog/Moogles, Floating Continent, Doma...
Like... take a quick look at the FF6 overworld map...
http://www.fantasyanime.com/finalfan...ap_balance.jpg
Note where the Doma castle is. Now look at the shape of the Western Continent.
http://www.fantasyanime.com/finalfan...f6map_ruin.jpg
Now look at the Western Continent
Now look at the FFXIV map...
http://www.ffxivinfo.com/images/maps...aps-eorzea.jpg
For all intents the FFXIV map could easily be half of the western continent of the FF6 world of balance had the North-Westernly corner been obliterated. We don't know what the rest of the world looks like.
Like speculatively speaking, had FF6 been populated by the FFXIV races, the game we're playing now would be it. The level of technology is consistant.
As for nods to other FF games.

I'll also mention that at one point in the opening, FFV a character takes off on a Dragon and from a Castle. The reverse of HW. It's been forever since I played it (I last played it when it was just a fanmade-patch before the PSX version ever came into existance.) There is even a Dragon in the FFV logo.
- Quest 'The Nest Episode' might be a a reference to Dr. Dre "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" [NSFW] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL7LVzym1bs), specifically the line ""So jus' chill, 'til the next episode". I just say this because of the previous Biz Markie reference (someone on the staff likes old hip hop).
- Quest 'No Country for Young Moogles' -> 'No Country for Old Men' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Cou...Old_Men_(film)).
azys lla fates

One of the 30-50 DRK quests already references Mad Max: Fury Road.
"Oh what a day! What a lovely day!"
