I want to be a Warrior of Darkness! D:

I have thought of how interesting it would be for a FF game where you play as the Warriors of Darkness. As you say, there needs to be balance. What would a world overcome by light be? Would it persecute anyone who made a single sin? Would the world become grey, and dull?

But currently, Eorzea is not such a place. Darkness is running pretty freakin' rampant. We kind of need every warrior of light we can get.

Eventually, there might be a FF game where darkness needs to right the balance. But it is not this game.

You have to farm 1 mil tendies to unlock Warrior of Darkness.

The only one that did that was Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Where order also equaled stagnation, constraint and turning every living thing into stone.

FF3 Concept. When the force of light becomes too bright, a mirror of the Cloud of Darkness, known as the Flood of Light shows up - and it's just as bad as Cloud of Darkness, seeking to lay claim to all souls.

That said, I don't expect FFXIV to follow this concept to the letter. Warriors of Darkness is likely an antagonist concept in this game, so no, players who are crying they want to be a Warrior of Darkness will have that wish go unfulfilled, cause they're asking to be the badguy - something SE won't do.

If the light has my soul, did I die? Am I in pain? Are we all frozen by endless energy? What has become of this?
And for that matter what would darkness do? Because I sort of always assumed it just turned people greedy and spiteful enough to desire harm to everyone else. Leading to all life bringing war and destruction unto itself until its end.

Ya most game doesn't explain it but some games do such as in Shin Megami Tensei game where

Order (Light) brings paradise to people but only a select few will be given that Paradise where people are given peace, unity, order, and happiness but those select few must remain ignorant of what is right and wrong and free will to think because ideas are what separates people and bring chaos. Those not chosen are destined to become nothing. Thus people become blinded by the light just like being blind by the darkness.

Chaos (Darkness) brings destruction to the world and people are easily given into sin due to absolute freedom. There is no peace and no salvation but only pain. All the freedom and ideas the people are given clash so order is never obtained. Thus people become blinded by the darkness just like being blinded by the light.

Then there is..

Neutral (Balance) where people are not given paradise nor absolute freedom but a life that provides a bit of both. There will be suffering and hardship but those can be overcome. People's eye are more open to the world and no one is blinded by the reality of things.

Not entirely sure, did not follow FF3 because its release was in Japan during my childhood and its remake were from handheld.

Plus, like EdwinLi said, FF3 had Warriors of both Light and Dark to help keep the balance. The Warriors of Light protected the World of Light from Darkness, while the Warriors of Darkness protected the World of Darkness from Light.
Final Fantasy Dimensions lets you play as both in episodes, each unlock jobs the other couldn't get.

I really hope that XIV doesn't go the cliche route of Darkness = evil and that the Ascians aren't just flat villains. :B

Well consideirng some statements from the Ascians, they certainly seem to have different interrest groups in order to solve Things. Like the city states as well I would say. Also they sometimes mention that if the Warrior of Light would know the truth he/she would maybe not support Hydelin anymore. So yes I guess they run in a grey area. For example they not seem to pray to the void which actually would fall under quite evil. I also think that the whole desasters play into the aspect to keep the world in balance like there is an age of light and darkness. It kind of looks like that the Ascians at least trigger some sinister events at some point when the Light gets to strong, that leads to an desaster and cuts things down again. I am only not totally certain how their one true god fits into this. Than again there is lso to consider that Final Fantasy 14 plays in the same universe than the other Final Fantasy games.

From the looks of it, the only problem in that seems to be the Darkness trying to ruin it.

Yeah, with most of the media I see where a "balance of light/dark" is needed darkness always seem bad no matter how "necessary" it is. Light is never depicted in a bad light despite having too much of it = bad.

At most they all say too much light brings stagnation..... I guess pre-Xande clone Allagan Empire is an example of too much light in the world?

I think you're forgetting that the justification of bad things don't end when you take over. The Allagans still had many enemies, and likely earned more while trying to "keep the peace". If the GCs suddenly became a unrivaled superpower, all with adventurer's at the helm, perhaps another would have come to view us and our actions as a threat worth fighting against.

Many of our actions come born out of a lack of choice, we have to accept the quest, we have to do this, we have to bring that...what happens if we do have a choice? Not some silly false one, but honest to goodness choice.

Who are we in the dark? Are we all one and the same, or do we break free?

Those of you making the Ascian argument don't really understand that the Dark Warriors are NOT aligned with them. If you've played I think FFIII, the Light Warriors (your party) is actually helped by Dark Warriors. Light and Dark Warriors are about restoring the balance.

Its why we (the Light Warriors) are not helping the Garlean Empire, even though they want to destroy the darkness and the primals.

Though with that said.. being a separate 'faction' wouldn't make sense. The Dark Warriors would concentrate on the Empire, while the Light Warriors concentrate on the Primal threat and the Ascians. We're doing both already so lorewise you could claim to be a Dark Warrior if you wanted. So SE doesn't really need to change anything.

Anyhoo.. playing for the Empire has its appeal. And it wouldn't be that hard to do in all reality, mechanicswise. Just change the class/job names to match the imperial feel. Job crystals are now magitek devices. Give them their own MSQ and all that. Now that would pretty cool. Won't see it though, but its fun to think about.

I'm leaning towards the WoD not being necessarily 'evil' or 'bad' - and the Ascians being the same as the Scions are to us. However, if they are, I speculate that it could either be -
a.) They are not all evil (the Ascian in white didn't pose true threat, nor has he done anything other than 'test' you/the WoL at one point... before sorta poofing and no longer making any direct influences on either side), b.) They ARE evil, but just have the WoD and can manipulate the person into doing things by justifying the orders.

Or....

Maybe Urianger is the WoD, considering the ending portion of the 2.55 MSQ cutscene....?

As mentioned before - if its related to FFIII then those warriors are not evil, they were true heroes!

Just as the Warriors of the Light had to defend their world from becoming engulfed by darkness, the Warriors of the Dark were forced to defend their own world from being swallowed by the light many years ago.

At the end of Final Fantasy III, the party has to find their dark counterparts so that they can aid them in their battle against the Cloud of Darkness. Each Warrior of the Dark appears after defeating each of the four bosses guarding the Dark Crystals in the World of Darkness: Cerberus, Echidna, Ahriman, and the Two Headed Dragon.

After each battle, one of the Warriors of the Dark tells the Warriors of the Light important information for the upcoming battle with the Cloud of Darkness. Before the final battle, the Warriors of the Dark sacrifice themselves so that the Warriors of the Light can save their own world.

Now, both Light and Darkness have an evil personification, that show up when there is an imbalance, that want to fling the whole world into their respected element, which in turn will reduce the world to nothingness, all darkness or all light.
Each world has warriors and four crystals to protect it.
It's not so much as Light = Good, Darkness = Bad but that their are elements just like Fire and Water or Earth and Wind.

I think what Gramul is saying is that how things work in Final Fantasy III isn't how things have been shown to work in FFXIV. So you can't apply FFIII lore to FFXIV.

In that context, wouldn't it be smarter to take a position of sedating the hungers of both sides rather than switching sides whenever one gets too big for its britches?

Why not warriors of eventide? Or the more accurate but poorly colloquially contextualized 'twilight'?

I think it's a bit more complicated in FFXIV.

There's "Light", which can refer to many things. I don't think White Magic is quite the same as Light, and if the Lost City is any indication, too much of it is certainly a bad thing.

There's Hydealyn, which...may or may not work the way primals work? I dont know. But Midgardsormr seems to be able to do the same thing, so i don't think she's all that exclusive.

There's the "Void", which may or may not be evil. Either way, it feels like DRK maybe draws from the power of the void.

Ascians seem to the be the clostest thing to darkness in the form of "evil", but there's another side to their story that nobody really knows about yet. But they seem to exist in a reality much different than the one everyone else lives in, so their motives can't really be known.

Just because we are going to be Warriors of Darkness doesn't necessarily mean we'll be working with the Ascians, I actually very much doubt we will.

Being Warrior of Darkness doesn't necessarily mean pro-Ascian.

Elidibus wants to kill us with his souped up flyswatter named Zenos.



It's probably within the ballpark of reason to think we are a threat to his plans, Light or Dark.

He only wants to kill us because we're 'shining too bright,' which as we've seen, can threaten to return the world to the Void. His goal is to bring Zodiark back, but his main goal is to keep the balance of light and dark.
