Expansion Jobs Speculation

The new Gun Class will be a tank. I'm calling it now based off of how they are introducing Rogue. I.E. a character already in the game is that class. (Thancerd is a Rogue)

The job will likely be based off of Rhitahtyn Sas Arvina. You will use 2 Gunshields to block and attack.

He also wasn't a native of the Garlean Empire, meaning we could come across his homeland in a future expansion and learn how to fight like him there. or (Like Rogue/Ninja) Refugees from that nation could show up in Eorzea.

Or it could be a Gun blade ^_-. Maybe a base gun class, a corsair job, and a melee job wielding a gundblade job.

So? Nobody said anything about role. The context is automatically having the job at 50 because the base class already is (Arcanist in the case of Summoner and Scholar). I don't ever have to play Summoner to have it at level 50 already because I leveled it for Scholar. That is the point, not roles.

just a crazy though but what if the new healer is wyvern knight. think ff11 drg plus all the missing drg support skills like reis wind.

Lancet-Reduces enemy's HP and MP recovering your own
Reis wind-Casts Regen on entire party
White Draw-Restores MP of all party members
since ff11 drg was supposed to be like a falconer the weapon should be a battlestaff it can perch on

Jobs don't have guilds, though. Jobs are avenues of experience that adventurers independently explore after exhausting everything that their class's guild has to teach them. If, after graduating from the well-known and respectable Rogue's Guild, an adventurer decides to undertake the tutelage of Siegfried, the infamous Thief, to learn some of the less savory abilities that the respectable Rogues left behind them (Steal, Sneak Attack, etc), they can track him down at his hideout to unlock the job.

That's just one possible way Thief could be added to the game, that does not conflict in any way with what has already been stated.

Well, perhaps one way: The fact that Yoshi-P was even CONSIDERING adding Thief as a Class rather than a Job indicates that he wasn't totally familiar with the fact that Thief is one of the Classic Six FF jobs: White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Thief, Blackbelt (Monk), and Fighter (Warrior). White Mage, Black Mage, Monk, and Warrior are all Jobs, not Classes. If Red Mage and Thief are ever added, and are NOT added as Jobs instead of Classes, the whole Internet will explode with OCD nerdrage.

I'm hoping for Thief to be in there somewhere.

I personally want Red Mage. Something that can take cross class skills from everything else, and has a much wider range of armor/weapon possibilities, but takes a large stat nerf to keep everything level. It could be an interesting equalizer, but I don't know how it could be implemented classwise, because technically you could have a red mage as a healer, tank, or dps depending on the spec

I'm sure we'll see more weapon based ranged classes soon as well.

I want a Whip class. Maybe an evasion based tank class using a whip.

This is a great way to prevent RDM from being invited to anything, ever - particularly in a game like this where the roles are so stratified. While the RDM in your example can fill any role, people will ALWAYS want a specialized instance of that role. Ask yourself: You're building a party, and you have the option of choosing a good DPS or a below-average DPS. Which will you pick? Sure, maybe the RDM COULD play as a below-average tank or healer instead, but right now you want a DPS. So, which will it be: good DPS, or below-average?

FFXI had a similar problem with RDM in the beginning. It could nuke, but not as well as a BLM. It could heal, but not as well as a WHM. It could fight with a sword, but its stats meant that it did far less damage than a dedicated DPS. As folks figured out ways to optimize The Grind (and in an MMO, optimizing The Grind will always become a priority, no matter what The Grind happens to be), RDM got left behind. To compensate, SE made RDM a specialist in its own right, making it the best enfeebler in the game, giving it some unique debuffs, and also gave it support abilities including one that was all-but indispensable: Refresh (restores target's MP over time - in FFXI, only SMN had native MP regeneration, and even SMN's was very weak).

So, the only way they were able to make a jack-of-all-trades, master of none usable was to make it a jack-of-all-trades, master of ONE. If RDM in FFXIV doesn't have a role at which it excels and is defined by, it might as well not be in the game at all.

Watching the video of the ninja, it almost makes me wish it was a Tank job much like how it was in FFXI. Stylistically, from that short clip, the Ninja just stood in front of the enemy with little movement, and when the time came used ninjutsu for additional effects. To me, that more closely relates to how a PLD/WAR plays rather than the movement-intensive melee DPS that we have in the game in Monk and DRG

I'm guessing Samurai, or rather I just want Samurai and it seems to fit in with having Ninja appear.
It'd be a counter/parry tank. I sort of see it not having the same stance permanent stance mechanic but instead using procs from parrying or stance-based combo sort of things. Can use that mechanic to mitigate damage and deal a fairly sizable amount of it too.
Basically FFXIV's version of Bravely Default's Sword Master.

Personally I'd love to see Puppet Master make a return.

Could even kind of mix it up a bit with the requirements being having to have CNJ at lvl 30 and Carpenter at 15 or something. I just think it would be a cool idea to work the DoH or DoL classes into the Job requirements for some cool new Job ideas!

SCH is different because of their job skills, but that heavily lends itself to the fact that it's a different role. DPS SCH plays pretty much the same as SMN. If SCH was another DPS, then it wouldn't be very different at all. So it matters what role the new class is.

The way I read it, Rogue *should* be named Thief. It shouldn't be Rogue, 双剣士, Surineur, and Schurke but rather be named, Thief, シーフ, Voleur, and Dieb. But lore caused problems so the former was chosen.

In Naoki's mind, Rogue *is* Thief and that's the end of their intention on that matter. I wouldn't dare claim that Thief job is off the table because in desperate times, people will do wild things.

That was unintentional, the were never designed to be tanks, and, seriously... Just think about the concept for a second? A Ninja, master of stealth and assassination... A tank? A role that charges in head first and screams for all the aggro? Sorry, sounds dumb ><

The video was made that way just to showcase the ninjutsu, just like when ARR was about to launch there was a video of every job doing some random stuff.

This. I do think that someday Thief could exist.

Im thinking Samurai like the rest of you. I can't picture them adding Ninja without Samurai. Samurai will most likely be a tank if I had to guess.

I dont think we will see much more by way of new jobs until 3.0 Yoshi-P has been contemplating reworking the armory system to allow for better flexibility with coming out with new jobs. I read an interview (posted below) where Yoshi-P expressed his thoughts on adhering to this old system.

Last year when Scholar was introduced at E3, it was mentioned that it would branch off from the same class as Summoner, and this would be a mechanic that would be used more, but it has yet to happen for any other class. Well, we need to look into this and whether we want to keep that plan, it’s something we have to consider as we add new jobs and classes. Honestly, if you good reliable dps with tons of burst you'll bring a DRG over anything else. MNK shines in long battles that's about it.

Yeah. I think a revamp is in order. The way it currently is... just doesn't work. I'm not expecting to see as many jobs as FFXI had, but that is one of the things I loved about XI; the vast amount of jobs you could play. It definitely kept it fresh.

Yeah, scrap classes. Instead, to encourage leveling other jobs, maybe we could do something a little less direct than FFXI where you basically just got a stat bonus and the abilities of the subjob that were appropriate up to the subjobs level (which was half your level at the max). Like allowing the subjob to affect your job's abilities.

Example:
WHM who subs BLM gets more crit heals and have burn and regen phases.
WHM who subs SCH gets a small shield attached to their heals and another damage reduction ability or two.
WHM who subs SMN gets a HoT on their heals that can stack and be instantly consumed by a cooldown ability for a healing burst.

Basically your subjob dictates your "spec". And the level of your subjob determines the potency of the spec bonuses. And maybe cap that at a reasonable level so we don't feel compelled to level our subjob to max.

One idea that was kicked around the forums before 1.18 hit was to have classes define the "spec" of a job. A CNJ that equipping the Soul of the Paladin could be more heals-focused, a GLA that equipped the PLD crystal would be tank-focused and so on.

The only issue I had with that is that it allowed abominations like paladins and red mages using staves instead of their iconic weapons to exist.

That would be rather odd. Also I think people want to be a Job primarily and they don't really care much about the broader classes. I don't think anyone picks up FFXIV thinking they want to be a level 50 Thaumaturge. They definitely want to be a Black Mage.

What I find more interesting is that in English, German, and French it is named something like "rogue". In all three the name implies the rough life, the wild side, whatever you want to call it.

yet in Japanese it is simply called 双剣士 (soukenshi), which translates to "duel swordsman" (or "duel fencer" if you like that better). Which is more of a description of the weapons it uses than a style of life.

That's always been the case though. Each localization has put a spin on the class, which implies something like a style of character, while the Japanese is always just the weapon set. Bowman, Swordsman, Axeman, Curse-er, Hand-to-hand combatant, Illusion(?)(Gen)-ist, etc. Whether you consider that as a "purer" take on the classes (or class names specifically) or not though, the ability sets, especially the CD arsenals, or each class certainly does push each weapon usage in a certain direction, which is why the classes, mere weapons and learning to better use them, act a bit like jobs in their own right.
