???? ffxv sold for 8.9M copies, probably already more than 9M now. It sold for 5M copies on launch day.

Did it? I stand corrected then, though with that report being old. I do wonder if their costs went up. Either way, the crux of my point still remains.
It's only "degraded" if you view it that way. Personally, I couldn't care less. I've used my "degraded" carbuncle for ages because I think it's cute. Good enough reason for me, really.
I did as much digging as humanly possible to look into this and couldn't find anything more than what was said at the first EU Fanfest in 2014 (timestamped, and the talk goes on for like 4 minutes about this). Nothing is said about all profits from the optional items will be put back into the game, but it is stated that the funds can be used to put more into the game. I recommend watching it since my paraphrasing isn't that great.

Sorry for the lateness, I had to write a disciplinary for a sailor who decided to break curfew.
Ah, I see the mistake I was making, I was only looking at live letters, not fanfests. Thank you both for providing these! I'd been looking for this for a while now off and on whenever I saw people mention Yoshi-p saying this, it's nice to finally have the context.
Sorry but $600,000,000 are roughly ten times more than the development costs of an AAA-title. The joke is, the marketing(!) costs are usually higher than the development costs. When a company needs $600,000,000 for a game then something went really really really wrong.
Cheers
My goodness. 54 pages of this noise.
Out of curiosity, do the complainers throw rocks at people pulling out of Porsche lots? Maserati dealerships? How about Lamborghini?
No? Well, why not? I mean, after all, those purchases affect you directly - that's not up for debate. The new owners often drive their sportscars very fast, thereby endangering other drivers; higher priced super-cars demand obscene insurance premiums, raising the median rate, and thus allowing insurance companies to charge you more; a lot of the land rovers and 100,000 dollar mega-trucks of the world aren't particularly environmentally friendly vehicles, either. The negative impacts are there... so where is that collective outrage?
Could it be that you know to mind your own business IRL? That you acknowledge - at least on some level - that we live in a free society where people are able to make decisions regarding their money without you deserving of any form of input? Might you - and I know this is a stretch - potentially experience some level of shame in trying to dictate their behavior? Much less ruin their good time?
If the answer is yes, then why can't you keep your nose out of it here?
Honestly ith how many time SE almost goes bankrupt i'm not complaining about CC, it's just a mount it's not like the Cloud Bike mount
That one was ok, it had no relation to ours and we at least got his outfit for free... the Bike was ok, its higher speed kindt isnt but welp... The Chaser was our Boss and shouldve been an ingame reward... heck just add some shiny golden one for the store if you have too...
This complaint is periodically show up when there is a mount people really want but don’t want to pay for it. Fine, in the future they can put this mount as feast reward since most of feast mount were raid boss
Oh wait, didn’t there are bunch or bad pvpers begging feast mount on mpg stations?
Does SE ever wins?
Yes ofc, but still it was part of our game unlike the Bike, that or even the Regalia I wouldnt mind as much. The whale while its a shame (and still overpriced) is kinda ok too.
Its just the Chaser is smt that was made for the game and especially he had several places where it would just fit - if it would just be reviving rival wings that wouldve been already nice.
And no all those feast exclusives are bs anyways, there shouldve been at least one variant you could get somewhere else, IDK whats up with them always trying to force ppl into doing stuff they just dont like or got time for...
To be fair, that further bolsters my point though. Square Enix essentially lost their shirt over their own disastrous decisions in the early 2010s. They're going to try recouping costs elsewhere...
The Last of Us 2 reportedly cost well over $100,000,000 without any marketing accounted for, which will likely more than double that number. That isn't a difference of "ten times" by any stretch. And yes, marketing typically does cost a ridiculous amount. This is true of film too. Which is why a movie like Batman vs. Superman was deemed a financial failure despite grossing 900M. The overall cost meant they barely made much profit of an expected billion dollar film. In other words, the entertainment business as a whole... spends an obscene amount of money.
I believe ESO cost $250M, or that was the allotted budget.
You certainly are fine when people having thi kind of arguments on your thread. As long as it supports you, eh?
I suggest you take your own advice, since not only you strawman your argument so hard by comparing a sport cars to a mount from a freaking game, you also act condescendingly.
People who are against the mount on cash shop have problems with SE, not with anyone else who bought it. At worst it's just a "man, why do people support this kind of cash grab". Do we personally harass you? Do we harass your character in game? Do we hack your account? You're angry at real person, who's disappointed with a big company that doesn't need your protection. That's the difference.
If you really don't care about us like you claimed, why not leave us alone? You even had your "hah take that!" moment already by buying the mount out of pettiness.
It's a mechanical mount- meaning 0.1% of players would have ever had access to it. Just something to keep in mind- effectively every single person in this thread would not have been able to get cruise chaser if they put it in as a Feast reward- a fomo, ultra difficult to obtain mount like every other amazing item that has come from Feast yet you never see in game.
That's how rare these items are- I've never even seen someone riding a feast mount, they're so rare they don't even show on that rarity site.
Are store mounts ideal? No- but I'd rather be able to get something awesome like magna roader off the store then not at all, Feast items kinda just feel like they've made a bunch of amazing looking items that simply will never exist for players.
This binary argument keeps coming up.
If it's not on the Mog Station, it would be a Feast Reward
But why does it have to be either of the two?
It could have been tied to achievement certificates, wolfmarks,Unreal,MGP...so many ways it could have been tied to in-game content.
In oposition with traders, gatekeepers, and people that just happen to live on active feast hours and can throw endless matches at the queue to brute force their way to the top? Nice competition you got there mate. Stop even trying to pretend that the Feast is a good ranking or show of skill - It is not. Remember it wanted to be an E-sport? It ended being a disgrace.
SE has won many times - The feast, housing, server limitations and the cash shop is where they lose though. You cannot win them all.
Not enjoying really, something something the planet is going to trash thanks to exactly your kind of mindset. Don't talk about it as if it was something good - It isnt.
So you are basically a child that will take a nice put little story to as a justification for having less content into a game and it being put behind a credit card. Ok, we got it.
Excuse the rest of us who actually want more than a mere joke.
Point is:
For 7 years this game has recived less and less content, each expansion faces cuts of content no matter the area.
For 7 years many systems that have clearly not worked, still not work, many of the limitations to the game are historical and have never been solved (server limitations).
And there is no relationship between the cash shop and the quality or quantity of content, Cash Shop profits DO NOT GO to Final Fantasy XIV. But it always seems that the devil has no shortage of lawyers.
This might be a culture shock for some of of you. But JP and I think EU are ok with it. If it bother JP people than ya, you might got a chance to change it. But even if everyone on NA did not like it. They still would not change it because you are second class citizens in this game. (lets be real. Reason why this game is so good.) so NA feedback is not require or really needed.
I'm sure many fellow europeans is opposed to it but personally i don't see the issue but I also don't have same context to blizzard as some of my friends.
I don't see the problem atm when so little mounts are being added vs what is being added to the game.
It's kinda a never ending discussion that leads to heated arguments and people going mad (like in this thread lol)
Nah most of us arent crying over it, i don't talk for everyone but we prefer this way.
Many mount didnt make it to europe and became exclusive to some country so when i see people saying that FFXIV dev won't ever hear what NA player will say it really make me laugh
Yeah I hear you buddy. I wish we'd also get some the NA exclusive mounts from amazon deals and whatnot but I understand it hard with regulations and laws in EU and PAL region. Maybe one day we can get some of them in the store like the flying cloud back in the day.
Hmm.... I imagine you're trying to frame this as an insult or gotcha towards me and my experiences. Also confused what this has to do with anything of I just said, oh well.
But to give a serious answer. A ton of F2P MMORPGs but those I spent years on playing actively:
FF11 - 12 years, maybe more (started in 2004-2005 whenever the EU release was)
FF14 - 8+ years (since 1.0)
Wow - On and off since 2007-2008.
GW1 - For about a year
GW2 - Less than a year
Destiny 1 and 2 (if we're counting them as MMOs, since you're asking for different?)
Countless of F2P MMORPG in the 2000s
Given there is more content in the game and added for free then whats on the mogstation. Safe to say the community is just as greedy as SE. Put anything the community really wants on the mog, people will scream how it should be in game. Put something they dont give F about the only people who gripe are those who hate the MOG in general. If you buy a item off the mog while at the same time not wanting too..thats your own lack of self control and weak will power.
While there's an underlying anti-cash shop sentiment for a lot of people, what crossed a line for many people is specifically that the mount is Cruise Chaser, regardless of its price.
Too much the conversations on that topic derails away from CC, but given what CC is and how anticipated it was, the current content drought, and the amount of content that hasn't been given much love lately, people are definitely allowed to be outraged.
So, you're telling me that SE deliberately added the Cruise Chaser to the cash shop to mess with all those wonderful players this year who are just now getting to feel the delights of the current expansion, Heavensward?
Or, perhaps, those wonderful players are ticked off because data-mining content in this game finds everything (including school uniforms and the Cruise Chaser mount) and they assume it'll show up as an in-game reward, knowing full well that there are no 'special patches' for cash shop exclusive items?
Personally, I think the mount is less than stellar, but I've never really had a thing for mechina-based mounts.
Can you not see why CC being added to the mogstation would be disappointing, if not insulting, for people who've been looking forward to him, even LONG before the datamine, and some even supporting the game since HW and before?
It'd be alike adding the E4 car to the mogstation. Some people are attached to the bosses and are already spending a lot on the game they currently don't have much to do on.
They shouldn't have to pay so much for a raid boss that's already in the game, especially if for CC's case, the mount was already as good as done through RW.
And for those of you who are still complaining about Square Enix not putting enough funding into their favorite MMO, consider that all of the MMO revenue amounts to about 13% of net sales. Note that operating expenses for the MMO are higher than for the other "Digital media" units.
If I were an executive for corporate SE, I wouldn't hear a word of "this game makes the company a lot of money, therefore ..." from players of either of its MMOs. I'd be more likely to say "OK, how can we fund the next set of mobile games, which are cheaper and faster to produce than an MMO".
Net sales: (FY2022/3 Q1)
MMO 11.6 billion yen
HD Games 25.1 billion yen
Mobile 33 billion yen
Amusement 9.4 billion yen [Actual arcades, mostly]
Publications 7.2 billion yen
Merchandising 2.7 billion yen

Disappointed, yeah, I can see that. Shrill to the point of "they absolutely shouldn't have put this six year old boss in the game unless they made it a free mount", not so much.
The fact is, its incorporation wasn't a choice of the development team, it was a choice of the Mogstation cash shop team who said "we plan to increase revenue by adding this mount to the cash shop. Development team, please create it according to our specifications". The development team didn't consider it necessary to award it as a mount back in 2015 ... what possible reason would they have to do so six years later?
