I'm not sure anybody is arguing that AH ranking is a meaningful way of judging a player.

No the AH ranking is used to show what a player has accomplished in terms of experiences. It's like a resume actually where you see the stuff they've done already. This doesn't make them GOOD at the jobs they worked at. It just shows history and how much they've accomplished compared to others who list achievements on the game. It's not great if someone runs around saying how hard/easy arch dynamis lord is or how they talk so highly about OLD school if while rank 1 in all nations with one Level 99 job, 2 level 50 sub jobs and a history that includes all level 1 gear.
Oh, in before "They might have started over" If they started over what would cause this and why? If things have changed so much since 2002 or whenever they restarted then it kind of counts as a new beginning anyway.
Rankings accomplish that a player has done things they validate the players personal achievements.

Obviously, the OP of this topic didn't get viewed publicly in the ranking system by anyone.
I suppose some people just can't see beyond one or two moves in chess. Since that's the case maybe they're right about rankings. I on the other have used them to see where I'm at quest, mission etc. in rank comparison to my piers. These don't need to prove OMG I'm fun'ken bad or how good player I am, it just needs to show you how much has been accomplished.
This is hard to explain to people if they lack the ability to look past the last time they achieved something that took several days or weeks to complete. It amounts to what WE'VE done and OUR experiences. It's a personal opinion if all those things are worthless. Start a new level one character without any help whatsoever, then complete all the crap you have currently progressed to and get that useless ranking.
Tell me just how long it takes to get that ranking back up. I assure you it won't be a couple of days unless you've never accomplished enough to matter. If that doesn't mean anything I sternly say that's right in ones own belief. Just remember this, people who can't see the value in their achievements lack the personal values/morale to see and respect the achievements of others.
I see these people are often the first to look down on others when they fail to see the accomplishments made by themselves. IMHO, It's very selfish to look at someone and say rankings are worthless when some players have been playing over eight years. It's like showing your resume to an employer that just throws it in the trash and says next. So much for your accomplishments.
On a final note gear isn't the only side of this game. There are also a social aspects along side the missions, quest, and crafting achievements. If people can't see or respect the whole picture then in my mind they aren't worth acknowledging as a pier. It's just that simple. Why?, because I recognize the blood sweat and tiers it took to earn some of those achievements. Those are our resumes they don't mean we're good but they do show most of what we've done.
Added:
For the record dispute you're well versed understanding I haven't paid guild portal or the FFXI ah a single penny to be in the rankings. This stuff is free if you set it up right because the info is part of the FFXI community. The rankings are created from that info off the community site and you don't need a 3rd party subscription.
