Longer fights <Do you want it?>

So, I'm wondering if people would like longer fights. The reason why I bring this up is, the fights are REALLY short in this game. As I'm leveling up and doing dungeons, I need not to use more than one ability(maybe two) There really isn't any reason for me to use the other spells/abilities or combos(can you even get combos off?). Which will bring me to my next point, longer fights will teach you how to use those other abilities. If things go wrong, you will also learn what to do in a panic situation for ifrit,moogle, and other big fights. The longer fights would have adjusted exp for em as well. So, the whole "Get less exp" argument is out of the window as well.

So, would you guys like longer fights that are more engaging?

Also longer fights would give more chance for Ai to kick in if there was any. I just like my trash fresh and not stinky.

I'm not talking about boss fights being longer, I'm talking about the trash fights being longer and more engaging than it is now but the fights add more experience points. So if you have 10 mins you can go out and kill a few mobs that are engaging and fun to kill with the same amount of exp gain as to 20 mobs, or however many. So, it doesn't matter if you have little time to play, you are playing an mmo, you should be expecting to put a lot of time into it.

I would like for the fights to be a little longer. Even just hutning reg mobs. I feel more of a true final fantasy fight if they are longer.

What do you determine as a long fight?
HM Ifrit takes ~10 minutes and I thought it was rather sizeable compared to some of the bosses that are downed in 3-4 minutes each.

I personally would enjoy more 'intense' fights than longer ones per se. First time I did Titan without any prior knowledge I was blown away, especially in the final phase where everything is going off. Arguably, the Titan fight probably went for ~7-8 minutes as well. A longer boss fight with intense phases? Sure, why not!

I think the idea was to offer both shorter and longer fights. If you want to fight something harder that takes longer, there's no reason not to allow it (as long as it's not required).

its not about if its required or not, its the feeling of "why pay for a game that i am not going to be able to fully play?" and ppl with shorter play periods are less likely to pay for a game that has content they are unable to play due to how long it takes to play it (IE: long fights)

You are only lvl 26 so you have not really experienced any long fights yet. However, even some of the fights towards the end are not as long as I would like, so I do agree. Yet I can not really confirm this because I have yet to do boss fights past Ifrit hardmode.

That's a fair point.

I'm assuming the OP is just talking about offering some optional fights (either overworld or dungeon) that can go to, say, 15 (maybe 20?) minutes instead of 7-10 minutes? If that's the case, I don't think it's a large increase of time to spend overall.

If the battle is something that will take notably longer, say 30 minutes to an hour, then it would indeed be unreasonable to assume that all players could attempt and complete it.

The fights are already long, long enough.
Lv 50 Dungeons/Hard Mode, take a fair time to finish them, considering you might wipe and gotta try over and over again, don't really need to extend them any longer, go do that before judging.

Indeed, I haven't had a chance to do those yet. Haven't even leveled far enough to get into the meat of the story, though I do plan to rectify that shortly.

I was merely responding to the legitimate point that Crica brought up.


That said, though, I don't believe the OP is talking about dungeon runs, but I suppose I'll just let him make his own point more clear. Don't want to put words in his mouth and all that.

How long do u want it to be? 30 minutes - an hour fight? Hahaha.. No no 5-25 minutes will do me :3

I'm not even asking that long. I would just like more engaging fights other than bosses in dungeons. You know, a little challenge in the open world with trash.

Why do the only engaging fights need to be in tightly controlled dungeons? What ever happened to every encounter being something you might need to actually apply yourself too instead of just ramming your primary combo.

Christ it's just sad when I can waltz through a area full of level 50 monsters on my level 30 summoner and never have a worry about getting slaughtered, hell if I wanted to I could probably kill them if there was any reason to even want to do such a thing.

Longer != More Engaging

I think the fight lengths are in a good place right now. Not too short, but not too long either.

Taking 5 minutes just to kill ONE trash mob anywhere will deter a majority of people away from the game IMHO. People don't have patience for that kind of stuff. Heck, people even do sac pulls these days just to avoid killing these trash mobs which takes seconds to kill, imagine being forced to kill them and each one taking minutes, people will start raging. :)

who said 5mins, where was 5mins even said, why even say 5mins? As jynx said, you shouldn't beable to go inside a camp and come out unscathed. Nor should you while fighting. I'm just asking for engaging fights, if a fight lasts 1 second(wich they do) it's impossible to have an engaging fight. So again, where did you come up with 5mins?

I think people are complaining that the dungeons might take too long if each trash mob too 5+ mins.

What if there are less trash mobs (shorter dungeons) but they just take longer to kill? Probably more hp, damage and XP per kill?

I do agree, as a SMN, fights don't last long enough to even apply all my DoTs...

I don't think dungeons need to be altered that much, but open world content is severely lacking. What they did with 1.23 was going in a great direction, they took all that was good in 1.0 and trashed it. I really hope they add some fun fights in open world that isn't a mosh pit of people.

Actually I'd like the fights to be shorter and more fluid. I feel like the fights are longer than needed as I end up doing the same couple of buttons 3-4 times. How many sticks with a spear is that marmot going to take.. really..? I can understand how fights could take long for bosses/named stuff as they are tough things with some interesting mechanics.. but not your average mob.

Edit: (Silly daily limit/level restriction) Well keeping in line with that same mentality what is the point of using the same rotation on an enemy 3-4 times? :) I think it comes down to a fault with the combat system. It lacks.. oomph and satisfaction. I understand though how if you're a class that uses a lot of DoTs a quick fight might feel kind of meh.

Bad example. Guild Wars 2 caters to people whom do not have time because the entire game supports that concept. In thirty minutes you can achieve a lot and come away feeling satisfied. ARR is just another grind game - the only difference is they watered it down so simpletons can understand it.

The argument that higher level mobs take longer is not only regurgitating the 'game starts at 50' nonsense, but also supporting the bad mechanic of disproportioned scaling. Why should something be overtly harder at 50 than at 10?

But then what's the point of them, really? Just for decor?

I personally think the fight times are in a good spot. Same level monsters in the open world don't pose much of a challenge (nor are they meant to) and this is a common feature in all MMOs now. The dev team obviously isn't modeling this from FFXI where a fight with a same level mob was a long drawn out endeavor that was a fight for your life or certain death.

Boss fights aren't too long to where they become more tedious than anything nor are they too short that they feel overly easy. Once you've done the fights enough they become pretty easy to memorize, but there's usually enough going on to keep your attention.

Wouldn't mind the fights being a little longer. I'm talking about regular mobs here, not bosses which are already long enough usually.

Also I would like to see SE move away from giving every single mob a mechanic that you have to dodge. You guys notice that almost every single monster in the game has some red zone you have to dodge? I think SE went a bit overboard with that.

Long fight doesn't mean it'll be entertaining. At most, it'll just be a repetitive task which you press the same sequence of buttons for 10-20 minutes, do you want that? It reminds me of Aion 1.0 when trash takes 5 minutes to kill and bosses takes 10+ of the same old routine, stand still, press same buttons, watch youtube video/movie, rinse and repeat until fight is over. No thanks.

Isn't that what it is now? Press aoe button till all trash dies? Just because you can't see how a longer fight with better ai would be more fun and engaging doesn't mean others like me see it as a positive. I'm sorry wow clones have closed your mind to what is possible in a game.

I run out of time with a few wipes. You can't afford to make any mistakes later on. Time is on your ass.
Time = 90 mins.
So no, I think the time of fights are fine and actually enjoying trying to not make mistakes because we're watching the clock.
Game is getting more fun and entertaining dungeon wise. I can't sit there all day y'know lol.

Nope. Got dungeons for that. I spam Stone II for all my life and I don't want to spam Stone II more than I should.
The more engaging ones are FATE's and they kinda killed that down the floor.
Dunno how Odin and Behemoth are but it should take more than 5 mins to kill them...like 30 mins so everyone can be there and have them damn load, I can't load FATE's anymore lmfao.
some FATE's need to last longer so every can get a piece of it.

In regards to instanced & encounter style content;

If longer fights mean less one-shot mechanics and more breathing room for recovery for the average player; Yes please.

If they continue designing content with make-or-break mechanics, one-shot attacks, and continue to make recovery difficult for average players; No thank you.

In regards to OP's derpy addendum;

Who the frick cares about how long open world trash survives? Encounters could be tuned down mechanically if made longer - but honestly claiming you want longer fights with over world trash? It's a stupid suggestion. It would just make people more inclined to sprint away or ignore monsters than they already do. Ask yourself; does the busy gatherer or traveling lv. 50 want a 10 minute fight with trash or will they just run until it hits the end of it's leash - like they already do? Der der der. So in essence making trash fights longer would just make item farming and chocobo/alt leveling or whatever a slower process than it already is.

So in regards to that - nah nope nein no.

I wish FATE mobs weren't so spammably easy.

Twintania was about a 13-14 minute encounter, and Nael is about 11-12 minutes long. I, personally think they're fine, as dying to the final phase of T9 and then being set back 10-15 minutes each time kind of drains you. D:

I have to say no.

I'm a veteran player from 1.0, and they tried this trick once before. After the battle system was changed around a few times and the physical levels were torn out, players by themselves were so weak that even a battle against a trash monster in the field was near-impossible to solo. Your auto-attack if you had an axe for instance was paced out something like 8-9 seconds apart. And you actually needed that auto-attack in order to get TP for one 1000, 2000 or 3000 TP (max) costing attack that did trivial damage. It meant that even a basic battle took up 3 to 4 minutes of your time.

As interesting as you might think it will be, having experienced this once before, it will quickly suck out all of the fun from the game.

If there are phases and instant kill mechanics in a longer fight, then no thanks. It would just be exhausting getting through half of the fight and then the boss starts using his latter phase instant kill AoEs. One person gets hit and then another and then it's back to square one. Seems to be how fights are handled in this game, but if they could avoid adding cheap mechanics like that, I'd be up for it.

nope, the length of the fight is fine as they are, longer the fight, the more chance of interuption, multiple that by 8 might just ruin the experience

I think Open World trash has enough HP. Play a White Mage solo without a Chocobo and you'll see what I mean. Now Fate Mobs could use a slight boost as well as some of the hunt mobs. Rank B mobs are pretty good, takes a while to duo and painfully so without dps. Rank B mobs that are the weekly need their HP increased by 10x or 20x though. Maybe even have that explain why they are the weekly, they're tougher than normal.

Dungeon trash I'm on the fence about. The pace of the dungeons is spot on. I don't feel like any dungeon I run is going by too fast. But I see where the OP is coming from, sometimes you only get half a rotation in, especially when you have Monks/Dragoons single target focusing. So.. if they increase how long it takes to kill the mobs, they need to decrease the amount of pulls. This would keep the pace of the dungeon.

As for making them slightly more difficult.. I'm with everyone else. No instant death hard punishments from trash. Maybe with the exception of Bomb type mobs who detonate themselves.

Bloody necromancers...

That said, unless they want to completely revamp the combat system to make fights actually, ya know... fun, I'mma go with no.
Even then I'm probably going to go with no, simply due to memories of all the bloody HP sponges GW2 tried to shove down your throat. No style of combat would make that enjoyable.

Man, I just fought the gray aevis in Stone Vigil hard and it felt like forever, why do you do this :(

The funny part about this is that fights in FFXI were, if anything, less engaging than what we have now. Fights with trash mobs were longer though.
