I have came up with a new idea in regards to death penalties. I know a lot of ideas have been thrown around recently, including Yoshi's, and I don't think anyone else has posted this particular idea yet, but if so I apologize in advance.
My idea incorporates the concept of death damaging equipped gear, but expands considerably on it as well.
What if each death were to damage equipped gear according to set parameters based on, for example, character rank, item rank, etc. Gear would also have the possibility to be damaged beyond zero, destroying it forever. I know this idea has been advanced before, but here is where the new twist comes in.
I know there has been some blow back about the destroying gear idea, because, let's face it, nobody wants to see a tricorne +3 destroyed due to a mistake or bad luck. But what if there were items you could apply to your most valued gear (similar to an enchantment) that would protect it from being destroyed in the event that durability drops below zero?
The item would only protect against gear destruction one time, and then you would have to reapply the item enchantment again.
These items would have to be rare, perhaps made from NM drops only by high level crafters, and then only if an HQ procs.
They might also have other restrictions placed on them; perhaps you may only protect a certain number of equipment at one time, based on character rank. Perhaps you may have to be a certain rank to even apply the enchantment to a peice of gear. Perhaps the enchantment expires after a period of time, and has to be applied again if the gear does not reach zero durability within a determined amount of time.
I think SE is smart enough to figure out restrictions that would keep these new crafted "equipment protectors" sufficiently rare enough that they do not become common enough to defeat the purpose of the gear destruction penalty.
I think that if implemented properly this could be very good both for the economy and give the high rank crafters another link to helping their counterparts in battle. The only drawback, and it could potentially be a major one, is if the items become common enough that everyone can always protect all of their gear, assuring that none is ever destroyed and defeating the purpose of the death penalty.
This is just a starting point really, maybe others can expand on the idea with ways to improve it, and how it could be implemented safely, without fear of the items becoming too common and defeating the purpose of the death penalty....

Destroyed gear is a HUGE part of eve online, and that game has been growing steadily for years now. It's player base has been consistently growing since like 2007. Eve online has a very awesome and hugely dynamic economy because there is always demand since gear is constantly being destroyed.
Just because you personally don't like the idea doesn't mean it won't work kilta. Stop being a troll. And I made a new thread because I wanted to. Deal.
By the way low level gear, or any gear will never be hard to get because player crafters will supply it, just like in eve online. They can also make entry level mobs drop it, just like in eve online. -

And there sorry but having snowflake-itis is getting annoying we already of 3 denth penalty threads. We don't need more. I much rather see 1 thread with 1K posts then 1K thread with 5 posts. All you are doing is necroing posts faster.
And the crafters in this game if you didn't notice on here or say zam and ffxivcore.com are exactlly the..... "helpful" type. most crafters from their words are crafting to be self sufficaint. No one crafts(from what i got told) to keep gear in the econamy. They do it to level and repair gear for themselves. Plus also, you got to consider prices will sky rocket, and if your new you will not have a ton of gil. Amd newbie levels are where you die the most.
I wasn't hating your idea, I just never saw a game where it worked. Also this idea will just get ppl to want Power leveling more since money will be on the line. As well as wasting time buying new gear. -

I think people forget that the way the game is now is not the way it will always be. Implementing the gear damage/death thing will help create an economy I have no doubt. Just because the game does not have a viable economy now does not mean it never will. This would be one way to help bring that to fruition. One way out of many possible ways, and SE will eventually do something about it, and what they do is up to them.

pretty much yuun. Once your gear break its gone forever. You have to rebuy that gear all over again. Imagine say getting kirins osode, (which is still an expesive peice of gear) and it gets destroyed. Say it cost you 1mil to buy it the first time, now you have to buy it again. Thats another 1mil.
Also what would happen to say quested armor like Artifact gear in ffxi? Would we have to re hunt those if they get destroyed?
From my persinal experiemces, this don't add challange, this will just tick everyone off. This will force crafting on people because atm crafters are not willing to craft as a buiness. Just doing it to repair gear or theor friends gear.
If PPl were not like that, I wouldn't mind the idea so much as it does get ppl buying more stuff more often. But I think it also waste too much time.
Even in ffxi before the servers started to die down, there were lost of time where supply never met demand. And infact items would run out. -

No, destroyed gear should not be an option. Think about if FFXI had that. You know that Apoc that you worked for 3 years to get? Yea...it's now gone. That Kraken Club you spent 35mil on? Well, you better start farming some more! This is a horrible idea and if it gets implemented, this game will fall even further in the abysmal hell hole that it's already in.

This is not at all casual friendly and as such I don't think it can gain much traction. Unless of course SE changes its tack completely and states that the focus of FFXIV is now aimed at "hardcore" players instead of "casual" players. Then it becomes a possibility along with many other fun things like XP loss on death. -

Give a..say..5% sp loss upon death, but do not allow the Sp loss to force a level loss. This will give a reason to live, but not so much that people will ragequit every time they die
