I wish FFXIV had in-game boss adventurer guides for old content.

Or at least release a compendium book for it. WoW does a similar thing, even for new raids, back when I played. Like it'll tell you what mechanics will one shot you, or the roles of each class is in the raid, like it'll tell you what to do as a DPS, what to do as a Tank, explain the phases of each boss, etc. However, I understand YP has a strict philosophy on clearing new things blind, so this feature would be better for old content, nothing from any current expansion.

Especially since I wanna do old raids, and the Ultimates, especially since I want to start doing Ultimates for Dawntrail. There are some online guides, such as on Youtube, but they are pretty boring to watch depending on the commentator or poor quality. Like I wanna at least do TWR before Dawntrail. Would anybody else appreciate this feature.

So you want a post where people aren’t allowed to disagree or point out excellent community sources? Well, that’s not how forums work. If you dont even care to defend your own arguments then what’s the point of bringing them up?

It’s not the worst idea but I’d rather they spend their dev resources in new content as there are plenty of excellent guides out there for old stuff. And I wouldn’t to miss out on a new UI element or maybe an adventurer plate rework just to get info that’s widely available already.

Thing is, to get an accurate picture of how much a playerbase wants a feature devs need to look at who does and doesn’t. If all they see is a post with unanimous support like you are suggesting they’ll think everyone wants that, and take resources from elsewhere to develop it. And that’s why I pointed out my problem with it. Because it’s not worth it to me unless they hire new people to work on this and other things won’t be affected.

The dev cycle is slow enough as it is right now.

I think the community has made enough resources to cover this better than SE ever could.

With how I learn, I often take the bites and pieces while I'm in an instance, then after several attempts to memorize those bites and pieces while doing the content, I gain the muscle memory, impulse memory or whatever, to complete that content. Like when I was solo'ng HoH, between floors I will use the Maygii guide for those mobs and boss, then I will clear that floor, and check the one for the next floor. Or, whenever I have breathing time to overview it for maybe 2 minutes or so. That's particularly how I learn. But for the guides I've found, well on Youtube, I can't stop what I'm doing to watch long dialogue on a boss, vs simply reading it in a document. Buuuut, if you have links to "documents" on like the Ultimate raids, I would really appreciate it. I learn best reading from a google doc, or a powerpoint for learning end game content. Plus I can put notes and stuff. This is how I've completed end game content in other mmos.

However, for Savage, I had someone personally coaching me during the content via discord, which also is a way I learn too lel.

The intention for old fights was you stand behind the purple line and discuss strategies with your party. Then you do the fight, wipe, learn from the mechanics, study the battle log and status effects, discuss the strategy behind the purple line, then try again.

So to release some sort of guide would go counter to their design philosophy back then. What they do with modern design, however, is make the mechanics intuitive (aka obvious) at a glance, so you immediately know what they do without needing to read status effects or anything like that.

Many of these duties have Duty Support now, as well and they show you how to do the mechanics, which is about as good as it could get.

There have always been text guides produced by hardcore raid FCs and as the game has grown, the amount of text guides has grown too. Now you can find these guides on consolegameswiki, websites that have worked with The Balance and a bunch of websites that started covering FFXIV after WoW's negative press in an effort to branch out.

Right? So does everyone. They learn the fight gradually, mechanic-by-mechanic, phase-by-phase, rather than all in one go.

But you can watch the video an hour before starting the content and then take notes on any mechanics that are relevant to your role or that you think are not obvious ie. no point including a raid-wide aoe or a well-telegraphed donut aoe, just write down the really complex ones.

An old trick I used to use when I started the game, was to create a macro with my notes and I would press it whenever the fight began or when a mechanic came up to remind myself.

4. There are dedicated Ultimate discords that will have these text resources too. In fact, I see text resources referenced frequently in Ultimate PF descriptions.

Not bad as an idea, maybe it can be an expansion from the Strategy Board feature that Dawntrail is releasing - and have it player-made and sharable per dungeon per raid, and anyone can upload their Strategy Board, and players can thumbs up the most effective ones.

The only reason I want an adventurer's guide for dungeon, trial, and raid bosses is that I want to learn about the lore behind them, just as I enjoyed learning about WoW's bosses from the journal. Even after years of playing this game, a lot of bosses I encounter feel either filler or random without much to know about them if there's anything to begin with. Here's a list of just an example of bosses I'm curious about:

- The majority of Alexander bosses (From A1 to A11)
- E1 & E7 bosses
- The Dark elf boss in the most recent dungeon (The only thing you can know about him is that he guards the place, but why is he called a Dark elf? What's an elf from his perspective?)
- All three boses of the Aetherfont
- Cereberus and Angra Mainyu (Come on, there has to be something about them)

Of course, there's way more, and I realize some of these have lore drops in the Enclyopedias, but I prefer to learn about them in-game rather than external sources.

Eh, what they also do, and have long done, is most fights/mechanics effectively have a "tutorial" phase. Near every mechanic in every fight gets introduced one at a time. This gives players time to recognize an attack is coming, identify it, and assess how to resolve. The longer you play, the more it will be obvious how to resolve things, but new/unclear markers still have their danger. More importantly, by scripting fights this way, the initial danger is minimized. Even if you do fail to resolve a mechanic, early stages of a fight are slow enough that you can recover, and learn from your failure. Often, these initial mechanics even get repeated, so if you fail the first hit, you recognize you need to do something different for the next. As fights progress, the individual mechanics will then be combined and overlap and generally iterated on, and you use a building knowledge.

And, frankly, all of this is worlds better than having a guide fully spelled out for you. Intuitive design philosophy is more satisfying to play over being forced to read through tutorials.

I forgot to mention that, but yes they do that as well. That part of the fight design has been around longer than a lot of the other intuitive aspects they've been building on with tank/shared buster markers, ahk morn markers and knockback indicators.

It's nice to a degree, but there is no guarantee that the guides or compendium published officially would be any more interesting than a content creator from YouTube, etc., - I think in the context of it being official, would also likely strip a significant amount of personality away from it as well.

So it's something that's.. Nice on paper, but not necessarily that great in practice. I suppose the question I have for you, is why would a native feature like this be anymore attractive than, say, a YouTuber, or a guide content writer?

This is actually what I wanted to do, but I was afraid I'll get gatekept from the ultimate, just so they can have people who actually know the fight well to do it instead. Especially if I look in PF and haven't found a guild this year to do it with.

I like written guides, I don't like YouTube ones because its faster for me to read through a guide, then watch an hour-long video with a crippling attention span, with very boring college prof voices.

It is true that most people just want you to have looked at a guide and studied mechanics, especially for the hardest content.

But that is not always the case. There are people who setup PFs with "blind prog", which means you don't need to have seen a guide or tried the fight before. There are plenty of static groups who decide to do it blind as well.

While the majority of people will always use guides, throughout my time playing, I have met no shortage of people in statics who say they do things blind. They do exist.

This game doesn't revolve around guilds for raiding, but rather statics. While a static could be composed of FC members, it is also often composed of people from a variety of different worlds and data centers, who use the travel system and cross-world linkshells to bring themselves together at certain times.

Same, I think it looked well made over at Blizzard. SE introduced Unending Codex "lately", systems like that could be expended. Maybe only after you clear a dungeon it should be accessible.

I also wish mounts and minions, crafting materials etc. would have in their item description an entry that tells you in which content you can obtain it. There are just too many mounts now, a mount log with obtained/unobtained mounts would be cool ingame.

Game lacks in that area, that it gets replaced by content creators and mods. Doesn't seem like the ideal way.

There could be, but the truth is, most of it is very predictable:

1. Every dungeon typically has a minion.
2. Every extreme trial typically has a mount drop (buyable with totems), material that can craft a minion, chocobo barding and housing item.
3. Every normal raid typically has a minion every 4th raid.
4. Every savage raid typically has a mount every 4th raid.
5. Every alliance raid typically has an unbuyable minion.
6. Every beast tribe typically has a mount and minion for reaching max rank.
7. Every expansion starting with Stormblood typically has an achievement hunt mount and mount/minion rewards you buy with the various currencies that hunts drops.
8. Maps typically have mounts and minions as drops (or materials to produce them with).
9. There are special or achievement fates that drop items such as mounts and minions, one per area (up to Shadowbringers). There are 2 rare ones each expansion (including Endwalker) and one of them usually drops a reward you exchange for a mount.
10. A bunch of mounts and minions are buyable from Jonathas at Old Gridania with Achievement Certificates.
11. You can filter and claim mounts and minions from achievements in the achievement menu.
12. Every area starting from Shadowbringers has bicolor gemstone vendors. Achieving maximum rank allows unique rewards such as minions from each area's vendor, including the city states.
13. Unique content, such as deep dungeons, field operations, variant dungeons, criterion dungeons, island sanctuary, unreals and the firmament typically have mount and minion rewards that not hard to find ie. a vendor at the starting area showing it as a reward, or as a loot drop - if it's a loot drop it's usually sold for gil on the market board as well.
14. Most minions and many mounts are buyable on the market board and any up through Stormblood can come from the Grand Company coffers.

Once you get a sense that the majority of them come from these places, it barely changes, with only rare exceptions such as the "get all jobs to 80" or "farm hundreds of fates" mount.

Arguably it is ideal. MMORPGs are meant to be social games. Massively social, in fact. Getting it from the game would be more of a solo experience.

What's this about a community again?

Mechanics are nice but the big reason why I would advocate for the Adventure Guide feature from WoW to be in FFXIV is for them to be able to list all the dungeon loot you can get for glamour hunting

I would like an in-game guide for older bosses for sure, a bit like WoW had I think. Not an exact 'Do-this-to-win' 1000 word guide, but just a small overview of what mechanics there may be. There are alot of bosses in this game, and its not always easy to remember the rotation of a trial you cleared in the story three years ago haha. So when you pop into a random instance and are lost, you can open the guide and just go “Oh OK. I remember how I kept dying here. Lets go!”

Duties have never seemed to me to be a place where "community" shines. Sharing information via the Internet, in-game chat, Free Company interactions, heck, even night club environments. Those are "community".

Rushing through a dungeon instance for tomestones with nothing more than a "hi" and "bye" isn't "community".

And where did you get the idea that there are currently 8 person Trust-based duties? Aside from the Hydaelyn MSQ trial in Endwalker, there is no such thing.

Another thing about WoW's in-game book (Adventure guide?) is that it tells you exactly what loot every boss drops, and you can sort it all by class (job), and search for the gear by name. This lets you find where to farm for specific gear without resorting to external sites.

It would be nice if all the lodestone features were in the game. But SE seems to prefer website versions of them. But it is still worth mentioning that SE does have these features officially, regardless.

Tbh, something that revives older content is welcome. The lvl 80 trials in unsync already skip too much mechanics. And in sync they are rarely played. Khloe doesnt do enough here as that can often be done in unsync, or ignored by doing the weaker content repeatedly. For players who want a proper experience for such content the game just doesnt provide enough.

The unreal is nice for a single trial, but not enough.

I wish there would be a challenge in which you need to do the older extreme trials for some rewards again. Maybe even changing the trial every week (or once per 4 weeks). You could even still put it as high end duty as lvl 80, forcing min ilvl and no echo. It just adds variety in content to be cleared. And instead of rewarding faux it could reward something else (which should just like faux be timegated and unique, to force people to do that content to obtain the rewards or buy it from the market).

I mean yes, this would be great, but a compendium book wouldn't help with this. Adding Faux Hollows as a reward for doing old content weekly featured Min Item Level (similar to Wondrous Tails or the Blue Mage Log) would be what helps with this.

Well, i was more commenting about the part that YP wants people to play content blind. It would be a way to make it a lot more viable to do that. And by that negate the need for such compendium book. The reason to ask for that is now more because its the only way to even play the content in sync (if you dont want to resolve to external sources).
It would be a way to make blind attempts viable again as there is now a higher chance of people will go for it, and by that negate the need for such book.

And tbh, such book is already covered by wiki's. It could be nice if they were accessible from within the game and link to the proper page. But thats also as far as it should go. Tactics of beating just have to remain to youtube (as these can change over time and get additional steps of efficiency). But just showing players that searching the info about an extreme trial is nothing to shame about and even a bit recommended, it is something that would help.

For things like normal content however, you realy dont want people to look ahead what attacks are coming. And thats where i would say that such book would be counter productive. And again, ingame it can be shown when it is welcome and when it isnt. Is the button there? well go ahead. If it isnt: lets go blind.

But on that end... i think most players are already well aware of this anyway. Its only the lvl 50 extreme's that have issues.

I think some things should just be left up to the community to figure out. Guides is one of those things imo.

I have to agree. An official guide would dissuade the many creative high-end players from developing their own strategies.

If I enjoy this game why would I play another game? Getting mad at someone for wanting quality of life features for a game they love is so obtuse and asinine. Imagine gatekeeping, I get it, you don't want anything to change, so you're upset at even the slightest form of suggestive intent when it comes to your baby. But man, this change wouldn't affect you at all.

Also "go play other games", is such a low effort sheepish copout. And implies someone can't suggest anything or want any form of changes because "they should just play other games instead if they don't like it", because once you go back the game is still the same with the same issues. Have you ever thought, people actually don't like/enjoy other games and prefer this game more?
