Island Sanctuary - "Sustainable Sourcing III" Achievement not like the others...

Why is the quantity for this achievement set so insanely high?

For reference it wants you to gather 30,000!!! times, this is the manual gathering one. Now you might be thinking this is meant for the entire life cycle of the content, which would maybe make sense but the other tier "III" achievements are not really reflective of that scenario.

This means the actual worst-case scenario is they add more achievements, above the tier III ones, which would be fine for the others to keep going but an absolute nightmare if this achievement also gets increased and expanded upon. They could just not add another tier for this particular achievement but then it wouldn't make sense contextually to have tiers higher for the other achievements and not this one, but it'd at least be more of a relief.

For context, I have been following along with the group who post the optimal setups and everything day to day/week to week and hardly miss any days other than just forgetting sometimes and I've gathered:
4,417 / 30,000 = 14.72%

Occasionally there are some materials I have to gather because they get used the most but this is usually at best 10-15 at a time for just a few days a week and the rest I either already got or get fed to me through the rare deliveries automatically. This is me being caught up with the content and not needing more or already having excess materials.

Now, let's compare it to the other achievements that are TIME LIMITED:

• - But at What Cost III = 1,616 / 2,000 = 80.8%
• - Agri-cultured III = 2,200 / 2,500 = 88%
• - Mine Now III = 4,509 / 5,000 = 90.18%

By actively doing the content and checking on it most of the time I am almost finished with those other achievements even though they are restricted by time. However, I am not remotely close to the gathering achievement, which I would have to manually and actively do for Hydaelyn only knows how long, on top of the fact that most of the materials aren't needed right now so it'd make more sense to wait until further content that I would inevitably have to gather anyway. And I likely still wouldn't need THAT many materials.

I could see them adding more achievements to keep the content going for those other achievements, or they might not and it'd be nice to be caught up on it but meanwhile, this gathering one is just insane.

I believe this achievement should've been set to something like 10,000 at best. And then later if the content keeps going for years at a time be increased to 20,000 along with the next set of achievements with the others.

So I ask the question why such a massive difference? Is it simply the case of them not expecting people to keep up with the time-limited ones so they are meant to last the life of the content as well?

And before anyone says it yes I understand there are other insanely grindy achievements but this one doesn't make sense in context compared to the others within it's own system AND it was mentioned numerous times as something casual to do and 30,000 gathering items is far from "casual".

Some achievements are intended to be a grind so those who enjoy grinds have something to do. You've just met one.

Following a player-produced optimal workshop path is not going to make a gathering achievement easier to get. It's going to make it harder since most of the value in the workshop comes from materials that can't be manually gathered.

The amount isn't that bad compared to the effort required for Landking of the World. I'm also confused about why you're bringing up time limited achievements. There's no deadline for completing these achievements because there's on reason to believe they're going to be removed from the game. If you're talking about in comparison to time-gated achievements, achievements that aren't time-gated almost always have higher requirements than those that are. It's a poor comparison point.

Why get upset over an achievement that offers no reward of any sort, nor is a stepping stone to another achievement that does?

If your gut reaction is to say "but I'm a completionist", use this as an opportunity to take a first step to rid yourself of an extremely healthy obsession. You do not need to do everything. You're only hurting yourself by going after useless achievements in a game when you don't even enjoy the activity required. Dedicate your time to the content you do find enjoyable instead - even if there are no more achievements left to be earned from that content.

Please don't say "but getting achievements is fun to me". Clearly it isn't if you felt the need to post this.

If you want it, you better get started, some achievements in this game is not just handed out, play another MMO, if you need to change this.

Either you grind it through or like others spends a year or something casually doing it, nothing should be handed out.. I am still working towards the 10000 Dungeons achievement too here among other things.

you can easily grind the 30k on top of the mountain within two or three days. You can even use an ingame macro that makes your character move + gather by pressing a single button. If you have a controller, you can make this while being tabbed out and doing other stuff. So ya.. its one of the easier achievements

That's also a terrible to take to criticize people for going after "achievements" or being a "completionist", they exist within the game like that's their entire function. And if the devs cared enough to keep updating it the achievements DO unlock currency that were meant to buy items from the achievement guy so they weren't entirely useless up to this point. But unfortunately they haven't expanded upon it to let people get more items.

Since you completely missed the context of my post you should maybe re-read it but it sounds like you are rather judgemental in your viewpoints to begin with so nothing will probably be accomplished there.

This is such a weird take. Don't you think if I cared enough to make a post about this that I would be someone going for achievements on purpose and that I'm not bothered by the idea of them itself or even grindy ones. It's the fact that this one doesn't seem to make sense within the context of the content and other achievements which I was clearly trying to point out...

Collect 20000 hoards from Deep Dungeons... accomplish 10000 dungeons/instances... craft items of HQ 10000 times... do 10000 fates.

I don't see what you are coming after and for, some of the achievements REALLY am things you need to grind for, so nope what I mentioned to play other MMO's where achievements is a linear system would be better for you, if you need it that much that is, also if you want something you better work for it, and the final steps usually has a much larger margain than the steps before and with good reason.

For whatever it is worth, I was at 11,000 shortly after I got to rank 10. This was mostly due to grinding for exp since I don't think we (collectively) had a good handle on what to expect from the Island. Maybe it was a "rush to finish" or whatever, but I was well short for R9 and R10, so I had to gather a ton of materials for experience. We also didn't have a good handle on the pasture animals. So, I caught regular ones first and then wasted a ton of materials on restraints for the rare ones, then released them and then caught other ones to even out my daily stores from those.

Just because you wrapped up at 4400 doesn't mean yours is the only path to success. Especially if you started late, you probably wasted a lot less time. We didn't have the "optimal path" figured out in week 1.

In many cases, the non-time-limited achievements are usually much higher for that express reason. You can do it anytime. I know Island Sanctuary was billed as "casual" - and it is. If you do it slow and steady (get exp from quests and workshop) and take a few weeks to rank up... it is very casual. But the achievements don't have to be.

That's how it is with many other aspects of the game. I think about some of the Gold Saucer achievements. You have 100 TT tournament match wins (time-limited, max 20 per 2 weeks) and then 1000 TT roulette match wins (not time-limited). I've done both. The second is a grind because it is not limited in time. Whereas the former is almost a "gimme" if you are trying for those rare cards at the end of the catalog (Lightning, Warrior of Light, etc).

why do you even care? The achievement gives literally no ingame reward. Dont do it, if you dont like it, lmao

you are not meant to 100% complete the game (which is impossible anyway)

You clearly missed the context of my post.

If you're not having fun with something, don't do it. Leave it for those who do have fun. There are players that actually enjoy those grinds.

I usually don't even care for those achievements, and never understood why there are such unrealistically high numbers for some things.
kill 2000 A ranks / S rank
get 500000 points in the diadem
2000 mentor roulettes
win 100 battlegrounds for each faction

gather 30000 things on the island? really... might as well have a bot running in circles since the nodes always spawn at the same spot.

I would suggest you simply ignore these kind of achievements.

Some of those achievements simply require to do an activity regularly (like hunts) and play the game for long enough. However there are those are are plain stupid that either encourage unhealthy and obsessive behaviour or botting. I think the worse one is the 20k accursed horde.

The mentor roulette and hunt mark achievements reward a title, mount, etc. Those are pretty rare and nice to see. I'd be proud of my achievement if I had one of those. There is no title/reward for 30,000 items on the island. Some people just like seeing all the achievements checked off for certain areas of the game. Sometime later this month and early next month, the "gather 5000/2500/2000 crops/leavings/granary items" will be obtainable. For some players, the only Island achievement left is the gathering 30,000 items.

It is irrelevant.. and also the gathering thing you CAN DO ANYTIME... some of the hunts and more to it requires actual spawning time of S ranks and more to it than what the eye see.... the gathetring of 30000 items you can do over a week or less.... getting 10000 hoards can take months/years... getting the hunt achievements you can't just do in two weeks... it can take months...and for most a year unless am totally no lifing the content.

NO you DON'T need to bar in the Island Sancutary gathering achievement with some fancy mount or whatever... it is not like you need to gather 1.000.000 items, which would somewhat be a better comparison to some of the real HARSH to do achievements out there.

So man or woman yourself up andstart gathering, if you need it so badly.

That's a good take. There's a lot more involved (and collaboration) with hunts. For this particular achievement, the only gatekeeper is the player. Either do it. Or don't. It doesn't affect anything in the game - other than adding 20 points to your achievement count.

And you keep failing to acknowledge the point others are making.

It is a grind achievement for those who like grinds.

You don't like the grind? Then don't do the achievement. You don't miss out on anything by not doing it. It offers no reward. It doesn't gate keep any other achievement that does.

If you're set on getting the achievement despite it being pointless except as a time filler, then set aside time to grind it out. The more time you devote to actually working on the achievement instead of complaining about it, the sooner you will be done.

I am litterally just pointing out how it works, I don't miss the point, if you want the achievement gather 30000 items in Sanctuary Island, also IT IS an easy achievement to get, unlike some of the others I have mentioned, stop yourself NOW.

It is a grind achievement and one of the easy ones to get as you just need to walk around and pick up things from the ground 30.000 times, it is not even a difficult one to do and it is one you can do quick, unlike collecting 10.000 hoards... or getting the Centurio Tiger.... which is achievements that is seriously long grinds.

I didn't miss the point, the OP just want everythign handed to him or her without putting any work in it, even if it is an easy thing to do, so just stop?

I'm at 22,914/30,000 for that achievement, which I mostly acquired from grinding exp from Rank 8 to 10 and then Rank 11 to 12. Some achievements are just because you participated. Some are a grind and others are over time. All sorts of different ways. I don't see a problem with it. Do it or don't.

Yeah, this one is a bit ridiculous and pretty much encourages botting. Have everything this island has to offer with only a little over 6k gathered. I can't wait to see Cider Spider attempt this one.

Is that really what players have come to? Botting things on a list just because and not because there's a reward to earn?

I agree with OP, grind achievements are lazy from the dev. At least up the rewards or something.

I think that:

1. when they design an achievement, at least one dev has to go through the process of completing it. If they didn't have fun then it's not a good achievement. Great achievements should encourage people to change their playstyle, or have a bit of skill to it. Blue mage achievements are nice for example.
2. it shouldn't be so easily bot-able.
3. it should have a better reward at the end
4. going through the main content should contribute to a majority of the completion. ie: if completing island sanctuary you're not 75% towards completing the achievement then the achievement was badly tuned. An example of a badly tuned achievement is the 20k accursed hoard achievement.

That particular achievement was extremely strange from the devs. Like only 200-300 people in the entire game have that one and most are from bots. Even players who religiously play deep dungeon with multiple clears on every job don't have that achievement. The only way to complete the achievement is to just redo one of the earlier levels in HoH, leaving if the int buff doesn't proc and your pomanders get saved so you get to retry over and over again for 10 thousand times. Ok sure that's an achievement that encourages a different playstyle I'll give them that, but implemented in the worst way possible.

And then with only 200-300 people at 10k they add a 20k achievement.

Either the devs have no idea how their own game works or this achievement is a honeypot to track who's botting, lol.
