Glamour Dressers , in our apartments/houses

Hi there everyone , so i have some time in game , and after all this i got an apartment in my FC house , some furnishing and all , so wanted my galmour dresser as well ....Seemed logical to me that i can buy one since its such an important part in game , applying glamours and so on , but ...did you know YOU CAN'T BUY ONE FOR YOUR OWN HOUSE .... Like how does that make sense , have to go back to an Inn or the GC squadron to do glam...like ..why ... So if you think the same give a hand we might get our wish come true

Something something spaghetti code, if they try to implement an item for that it'll break something. I don't know the exact details, but it is the basic gist of why we aren't getting that.

It, like many other features, has been a thing for years though. People have asked for Glam Dressers to be added to housing. You'd think they'd have sorted it out by now but alas. They only now just figured out how to let us change glamours in Sanctuaries, so I really wouldn't hold your breath.

iirc if someone tried to move the dresser while it was in use the test server crashed

They have said for the past 6 or so years that they cant put dressers anywhere else but the places that already exist. Moving them will down the server.

While this is true, there is absolutely no reason why we can't have a room similar to the workshop that has a glamour dresser.

Like, "Broom Closet", or even "Guest Room"

Close, if multiple people used it in the same location it crashed the servers.

I believe the key issue they've mentioned with the glamour dressers is that in order for them to be in use, they have to be able to load the entirety of the glamour dresser all at once on the server side. (Which makes sense; you don't want to trust the client to just tell the game what pieces of glamour to use, or someone would hack the client to be like "Sure yes I have that ultimate weapon I just added to the glamour plate, honest!" But to validate that yes, they do in fact have that glamour item, you need the glamour dresser loaded to say "Yes, that is in the set of glamour items legitimately in here.")

In any zone where you have multiple people (and thus might hypothetically have multiple glamour dressers open), evidently having all that additional state loaded in at the same time into a shared zone's overall zone state caused some... let's just go with "Issues". Hence why the glamour dressers exist only in solo instances (inn rooms, Grand Company squadron barracks, etc.), where the instance itself is (mostly) handled client-side, and you can kind of dodge that issue by virtue of having the few server-side things (retainers, glamour dresser, etc.) not need to be in an overall shared zone's memory.

I'd guess the reason they can't do an easy end-run around it is that the glamour dressers were probably written with various assumptions about game state and how it's communicated, thus making it difficult to disentangle with various other pieces. (I'd also guess that trying to untangle it in such a fashion is probably why the expansion of glamour dresser inventory slots has not been so simple as it feels like it ought to be.)

I see posts here saying there is no spaghetti code it's just an excuse at this point. I see people posting they want wards or housing instanced to fix multiple problems with housing, player limits, glam dressers and all. I don't know what to make of it. WoW used to have old code too and they updated it during one of the expansions after many years, so it CAN be done and everything that was once vanilla CAN be updated.

What I do know is I have no space left in my dresser collecting glams for only a few of the classes out of all that they have to play. Maybe merge the armoire with it to give more space? Better yet, I would REALLY like a system where once we obtain any item it kind of checks it off on a list back end that my character has unlocked it (or account wide if you want to be nice like WoW did when they implemented something similar) and we can then choose our items to make outfits from that already collected list.

IF I HAVE to have the item physically in my glam dresser to make a plate for, make it like ESO recently did and allow me to spend a glamor prism or something to recreate that item FROM my checked off list of already obtained gear, and then store it in the dresser to make a plate from it.

I was a warlock main since vanilla. We have almost always had some of the best armors in the game for over 17+ years. I don't understand your comment.

As Midareyukki said. You can have a mailbox, and a FC chest. And a retainer bell, fuck you can even put the retainer outside with a permit and sell stuff directly, and mannequins, but no glamour chest or item.

While late to this thread, I've also have a warlock, shaman, warrior, DK, rogue etc transmogs that are quite unique since vanilla wow. Zero is correct in that statement belittling it does not make it wrong. If moving it while someone is using is a issue simply make it a perm fixture when you get a apartment/room, If its too many opening on server as was stated in previous posts and can only be stable in a instanced area......Aren't FC rooms and apartments instanced?

Why not just restrict it so that only people in the apartment, house, or free company that have the appropriate privileges can use them. Then further restrict it so that when someone uses a glamour dresser, IT WILL NOT WORK while a house is in editing mode. The item would basically become completely useless unless completely out of editing mode in housing.

What happens if someone opens it before another person opens editing mode? You likely run into the same problem.

I think the best option is probably to make them exist only I rooms and apartments, limiting who can use them to the owner of that room. Less lucrative perhaps, but sidesteps the inherited 1.0 issues

Then make it so that it kicks them out of the glamour dresser when someone tries to do that. That way there isn't a crash, or it could even say "can't edit house, wait until someone is using the glamour dresser".

There's no easy solution for this, so it will have to be a bit more complicated.

That assumes kicking them out of the dresser isn't what's causing the crazh.

And they can fix the crashing issue why? Seems like they don't want to :(

So like the pixelated garbage armor with terrible textures in FFXIV?

We wish but the servers might implode or something if they gave us that....don't tell Yoshi I said that

they also said it was impossible to add a checkmark on obtained items because it would overload the servers and crash them

my suggestion for the dev is to add a "dresser room" in each houses. it's a special solo instance where u can use glam dresser alone in a room. and only 1 person can use it at a time

I can imagine this I'd there was any actual shops and stores Ingame with changing rooms.
but since the closest thing would be a guild. and they don't have such rooms.<the preview in try on and in the character menu/Pose/Portrait is practical a portable version of it>

it is unlikely that it'll exist in a applicable way for custom locations. <seeing how people stack things together as well. imagine a floor collapsing and there goes the Server.>

Hopefully they make changes one day to how it works in general, maybe then the system will be better, and we can have dressers anywhere.

but unlikely to ever have a true dressing room one day.

So you're only thinking of FC houses. What about my apartment or someone's house that doesn't have one of those doors inside? Is a door supposed to suddenly appear in those instances and likely be blocked by existing decoration? We already have changing rooms available to all and it's not that far to go in any city that has it.

WoW chest and leg gear is just an image shrinkwrapped over the character model. It's also why they only have full-length robes and skirts with no shorter options; to prevent clipping with robes, the game literally turns off your legs from the ankle up.

As an indie game dev sometimes it's not a lazy excuse, it's a triage excuse.

They could fix it, by entirely overhauling how the code works for both districts and dressers and how the databases function, but then you have to build a new code base specifically for translating data over from one to the other because often the issue is 'fuck a fundamental issue with how we stored this data makes this happen so we have to store it in some new way', unless you want them to just wipe both dressers and housing area databases and make us all start from scratch? Is this feature worth that? It'd probably cut down the coding time by at least half if it was!

This rings so true I had to cast resurrection on this thread... I found it via a web-search anyway...

As a former coder... the quality quoted above pops my consciousness every single time I log in.

How? How does a company with so many financial resources look at the public and say "We can't do it" to a coding feat that requires no discovery? Either their core code really IS that shaky (doubt it... a LOT of concurrent players... so it's at least sufficient), or they just "don't wanna!" Either way, it's mildly surprising SE wishes to present itself to its fans, the investing public and the mirror-on-the-wall with food on his suit jacket.

It's even more mystifying when you look at other areas of the code and see the absolute baller effort of the programmers, such as, performing music. They jacked in MIDI support, but can't let us have a dresser in an apartment? Sure. I so believe you...

One thing I learned researching the "why" of it all is Japan's isolated technology culture of pride. If I understand correctly, there is a culture of "build it yourself! No outside help!" This means a lot of Japanese tech companies often reinvent what the industry knows already... and with the same errors that other people have already experienced...

I suppose that's a respectable tack to take if your team is on the absolute cutting edge of a topic; they're first! But...

It's like the 20th Century space race between Russia and the USA... May have saved the lives of some astro/cosmo-nauts if they had just shared their ideas with each other... hadn't reinvented the wheel to spite each other...

This is only gaming software, and nowhere near "important"... but it IS a pity. It must be the former coder's pride: If I can code a 10, why the bleep would I want to turn in a 6? Sure, sure mitigating concerns, at least let me turn in an 8... Please?

Late reply, but I wonder if it would be possible to implement a solution that stops you from using the dresser when someone else is, so it only needs to load one person's dresser inventory at a time.

They can block people from using things like cannons if another player is already operating it, but I don't know if that would be transferable.

i feel a reasonable solution would be to add an 'instanced room' (like a free company room) called a study or something, that just leads to an a inn room.

It'd literally be a copy paste of the current inn rooms, you cant move or modify anything, but would allow access to the glamour dresser/armoire in a private/fc house.

Or just put the armoire in workshop. Maybe redesign the interior a little bit and put the wardrobes there.

This is an excellent idea. Could even have "skins" that you could select.
