Penalty for watching cutscene

Ugh this is a rant post.

I do not understand why there is no way to pause your queue when you are watching a cut scene. All I want to do is work on a few quests whilst I queue, but they all have cutscenes, and the queues always seem to pop in the middle of them! Was just queuing 30 mins to get into Urths Fount. It popped during a long cutscene and I had the choice of either exiting the cutscene or losing my spot.

To top it off, you then get an abandoned penalty. The whole thing is infuriating, and encourages you to do something outside the game instead. I’m not going to sit and watch my character for 30 mins. Other MMOs simply pause your queue when you are not in a position to accept the group.

Anyways, it’s very frustrating and I’d love it if they fixed it somehow.

Some other cutscene I think it is mainly MSQ? Allow the queue to pop up but don’t let you join until the cut scene finish or you skip it
I don’t understand why can’t all the cutscene or set to “reset” if the player choose to join the content, they just have to chop the long non stop chain quest into smaller pieces

Hmm, recently I ditched an MSQ cutscene in Shadowbringers in favour of a queue pop, it was ready for reset when I returned. Perhaps it's not applicable for all of them? Would be odd.

I think the "pop during cutscene" is a bad situation only if you changed your job after you queued up and before you started the cutscene. No way to accept that pop without worming out of the scene and returning to your queued up job. Sadly IMO a full wait option would be iffy since cutscenes can vary from a minute or so to several minutes (even those without the long scenes warning), and an instance doesn't begin until everyone accepts. After all there has to be a limit on how long pop is available, it keeps both those behind you and those who accepted waiting for an unknown amount of time.

Either way, you can miss one or at the most two pops per day with the penalty count, so it gives some leeway at least. Worst that happens here is for DDs who wait for many minutes, risk a cutscene, decline queue but have to start waiting again. It seems a little too situational to warrant a long wait solution instead.

It is indeed odd. Sometimes you can accept the duty mid-cutscene, so the cutscene doesn't get marked complete and you can rewatch it from the start once you come out of the duty. But other times, even if you're the same class that you signed up to queue with, you get an error when you try to accept – from memory, something about "cannot use the duty finder while occupied" or something like that.

I've been trying to make a list of them when they happen, to see if there's a pattern. Perhaps it's cutscenes that behave in some particular way.

I think someone doesn't understand how a queue works...if you get into a queue in a themepark...and you just go quick to get a hotdog or something...and then come back and can't get into the same spot in the line or the ride already started...that is your fault you know that, yeah?

Maybe you learned your lesson now and don't to stuff that prevents you from accepting the invite. Maybe gather some mats next time. Or just wait and be a bit patient.

?????? did you read the post she was asking why she gets a penalty when the system dose not allow her to accepted the duty while in Msq cutscene with out skipping it and is pointing out that need to change which i agree though don't know how they would be able to do that

It's inconsiderate to ask everyone else to wait 30 minutes for you to finish your cut scenes.

If you accept the queue while in a cut scene, you will be able to watch them after from the beginning, but if you remember how far you got you can just click through the text you already read.

Urth's Fount is supplied by Mentor Roulette, which can only be used by level 80 players that have met the battle requirements, so it can take a very long time if it even succeeds at all. You may experience the same problem with Minstrel's Ballad/Extreme trials and coils.

If someone is in the middle of the one-and-a-half hours of cutscenes at the end of A Realm Reborn's follow-up story patches, it's unreasonable for others to have to wait for them to first finish.

It would be lovely if they could change the queue system to automatically pause a player's status in the queue when in a cutscene and resume it when they're done. For example, I'm 15th in line for a place in a party and start a cutscene. My progress in the queue is paused so that I remain 15th in the queue during the cutscene while others behind me progress in the queue. Once the cutscene's done, my queue progress resumes as normal. That way we don't get a penalty, are able to remain in the queue without going all the way back to the end, and the people behind us are able to move up in line as normal.

The thing that bothers me about que pop during cutscenes is if I qued as a different job than I am during the cutscene. The only way to change jobs is to skip the cutscene to get out of it. I'd really like a "pause" or "eject" option to get out of it and simply mark it as unfinished. I don't want to go to the inn and find the cutscene in my journal just because of a que pop.

That's great if it's one person. What if it's 3000 people?

Suddenly the queue has this huge chunk it needs to ignore, then x amount of time later, suddenly those players are unpaused, and if it was matching people but not full yet, it may rearrange people's queues, split parties it was forming, etc.


I think this is a bigger nightmare to code and qa than people think.

I don't doubt that it could be a significant hurdle and potentially impractical to implement; I'm not a programmer and am ignorant of these things. Even so, it would be a nice option to have if possible. If not, then we just continue with the way things have been, right? :)

Why pause the player queue instead of just... pausing the cutscene? It can resume where you left off when the duty is exited

That's not what the OP is saying. They queued for 30 minutes and at the 30th minute they happened to be in a cutscene when it finally came up.

This seems like a much more reasonable solution to me.

While playing through the entire MSQ for the first time, I hit similar issues as OP and although in a few different ways, I feel there's room for improvement with how DF queues pop up and options players have (although in general I think the system is pretty good).

Regarding that first, while it can be a touch frustrating having a queue pop during a cutscene, it's not that big of a deal to me. If I'm really into a cutscene, then I'll take the penalty (I believe they reset daily?) and just try to be more careful. Otherwise, I'll take the queue and simply re-watch the cutscene when I get back (I enjoy the stories, so that never really bothers me).

However, that leads to 2 critical issues I've encountered beyond the above that's absolutely maddening to me:
#1 - When I'm in a cutscene, and the game won't let me accept a queue
It's insane, but it's absolutely happened at least 3 times while I was going through MSQ. Once during Heavensward, and twice during Stormblood. It was during really long cutscenes, and even though I was ok with re-watching them after whatever DF had popped, the game literally wouldn't let me accept the queue. I had to eat the penalty, which sucked. In these circumstances, I had to do essentially what OP was concerned about, having to idly stand about while waiting for a queue to pop, which isn't fun (note again that this was while I was leveling and going through the story, so I wasn't in a good spot to really explore any alternative game modes like professions, hunts, etc.)

#2 - Accepting a queue mid-cutscene and expecting to come back to re-watch a cutscene, but discovering that it had already "completed"
This one is also super frustrating, because again, I really like the story. So accepting a queue thinking I would get to re-watch a cutscene when I got back only to discover that it had "completed" and I was out of luck was disconcerting. This only happened twice, and thankfully I was able to look up the videos online (neither were in the replay menu), but it was bizarre encountering that when so many other worked differently.

I've flagged all of the above as bugs to SE already so they should be aware. Just wanted to denote that there's myriad issues with how the queues interact with cutscenes and again, there's room for improvement.

Also, I really like Illmaeran's idea! Would be really nice if queue's could be paused during cutscenes, but as another pointed out, I can see how that would be a sizable challenge to code.

I'm pretty certain that's not how the queue works. It's sorta like being in a Supermarket but there's multiple checkout lines, and you choose one to queue in.

You may be 15th in line for a party, but that's 15th in line for whatever group you're queueing for. There's way more people queueing into a duty than what the number your queue says. The queue takes into account of people doing Roulette as well as people manually selecting the content they're choosing for the entire datacenter, but splits them off and sections them individually to speed things up. The number of people groups formed is then based on the upper limit of the number of instances that can be opened at once and the number of people who are queueing at any point in time.

That's why you could be #1 on the queue list, but not receive a pop instantly when another person queues in (because they popped another group instead) unless they're specifically queueing for the same content you are doing. Alternatively, we don't know the exact amount of programming going behind the scenes, but they'll most likely merge groups too if the duties are compatible after a certain period when they empty out or get cleared. All the player sees is the "Queue placement", but not the group they're being assigned to.

Well I mean there could be some leyway like no penality if your q time is over 45mins. (Ya some ppl including myself have had qs for over an hour.
Its also inconsiderate to penalize for doing something else in game because your q is well over an hour so you assume your safe.

Just make the thing not give the player a penality for not entering whike watching a cutscene.
To add to op it is dumb things in the golden saucer like air force one makes u leave q

What? No.

For a given duty there's a line of tanks, a line of healers, and a line of dps (that wraps around two city blocks). When you get to the head of the line you join whatever duty was selected. But it's closer to a priority queue than a simple one. People who have directly queued for an instance get priority over those that have queued for any roulettes that cover that duty. Party members all get selected together.

Illmaeran's suggestion would simply alter the priority. As the people ahead of you get selected the person behind you moves in front of you. If there's nobody behind you then you move up. If you're #1 and still in CS then it works as if there's nobody in queue until you exit the CS.

That's what I thought initially, but you could be DPS #1 in queue and another healer could still queue into Roulette system, which implies your queue should pop next. But... you don't always get your duty popped. Thus, you aren't actually "#1" in the queue, rather in the list of "#1 in queue".

A better example is to look at it is how multiple individuals can be in the DPS solo queue in trials and be "#1 in queue" because each trial takes the next 4 trial roulette players.

Ex: Four DPS queues individually into trial roulette, one DPS queues for a specific trial (say for example, Emanation), another also queues into a specific trial (The Jade Stoa). Farther down the line, 2 DPS queues into Emanation.

In that order, the 4 DPS would be next in line for the next duty to pop, a.k.a. "#1 in queue".

If 1 tank and 2 healers queue into Emanation, the priority to fill via trial roulette then goes to the players who queued into Emanation. Then, it's quite possible to have 3 DPS that queues into Emanation to pop, and 1 of the DPS's queues into trial roulette to pop. The other 3 DPS in trial roulette will still have their queue say "#1 in queue" though, because they're next on the list, but they weren't informed another queue already popped. There's also the thing to consider where you can be "#1 in queue" and then be skipped because you can't qualify or haven't unlocked the trial, which would bring the next list of "#2 in queue" to fill for your spot.

But by that nature, it also stands to show you can have multiple individual players with "#1 in queue", which implies there are multiple groups of "#1 in queue". This makes sense, because you can have a group of 3 DPS who queues up together, but still be "#1 in queue", and another DPS who waits into queue wouldn't be considered as "#4 in queue," but rather "#1 in queue".


Even by this logic, holding your spot could technically be seen as pushing the line forward, but the question is how the priority affects holding the queue when you rejoin, because then all these groups & their priorities would have to be recalculated.

Just ditch the cutscene and join the dungeon, you can restart it afterwards or watch it later again in the Inns anyway.

Impossible if you're running another class when you play another class that you don't queue with, and not every cutscene will be in the Inn.


The most feasible way is a function that sends you back to pre-cutscene that can be triggered by players. This is already in-game, when your queued class and your current class is the same, allowing you to watch the cutscene at the same spot again. Now SE only needs to expand it.


Another way is allowing to delete MSQ quest so that player can restart the whole quest. Players getting lost is non-issue cuz there is already a giant button that tells you where to get your latest quest. This is also helpful when you forget to talk all NPCs for all flavor text, and it proves to be a hassle doing a whole New Game+ for something you miss in the the middle of a whole expansion, and recorded video clips don't usually talk to every NPC.

Some cutscenes throw a fit at you and don't let you go in even if you're on the class. And in this case, your example isn't somewhat incorrect.

It's more you're in line at a themepark for a ride, and someone when you're almost up for the ride gives you a hotdog and you decided you wanted it. Now you have a hotdog and they tell you now you can't get on the ride because you took the hotdog they offered. You never got out of line, you simply took something offered to you while waiting and now you're screwed because of it.

Unless, of course, you throw the hotdog to the ground. Now it's filthy, and nobody wants to eat it. And they say if you do, you won't get another hotdog. But all you did was, again, take a hotdog THEY offered you.

Could it perhaps be the cutscenes that you can't skip because at some point there is a dialogue choice you have to make? Or perhaps one of those longer sequences where even if you skip, it immediately plays another scene right after? Or maybe one of those scenes where your character is actually removed from the map and placed somewhere else afterward, so in the meantime you kind of don't exist anywhere.

The Fashion Report cutscene is unskippable and you can't enter a popped duty while you're in it. If the duty popped right as you click "present yourself for judging", you're going to miss the queue

That sounds very unlikely to me. It's still a queue. You don't give four people "#1 in queue" status; you take #1-#4 when it's time to assemble the party. Otherwise what happens when the system is trying to recruit three DPS to fill someone's queue? They don't all have equal priority. The first three eligible people will be taken.

Your initial logic doesn't make sense to me. You have no way of knowing when a healer queues into the roulette, so why assume this system of multiple #1s over simply being at the front of the queue while either the healer or tank queue is currently empty?

This is actually a great qol idea. There needs to be a point where the game just accepts a person can’t sit and wait forever. After a substantial amount of time, I don’t think a player should get any penalties. I’d say a half hr + seems fair to be forgiven for a missed queue pop

Think they should add some form of indicator that tells you if what you're about to do is gonna trigger a cutscene, and whether that cutscene can be canceled or not.

As of right now you really have no idea whether you're just quickly handing in a quest or are about to launch a full feature film. And like others mentioned, the fact that some cutscenes can't be "canceled" out of is particularly aggrevating. Having to restart the cutscene is fine, but forcing me to skip it entirely is not. Don't know why they do that, maybe there's a good reason for that, but at least let me know in advance so I can decide whether to wait for the queue or not. Giving players a penalty for that is basically entrapment.

Sure you can, just have a healer friend solo queue up while you're in #1 DPS queue. If the healer queue pops but yours doesn't, it means you didn't get your queue popped even if you were at the top of the list for the same roulette. It meant another tank and healer filled the queue for another group - implying you didn't meet the requirements to join or the DPS slots were filled up. Now, if you did unlock all the duties, that shouldn't be the case, hinting that there's more priorities for "#1 in queue" slot. Now, when we zoom this out and take into consideration the number of extra priorities in a massive scale for every player queueing up, you would have to separate them into another group to categorize them.

I think you are overlooking a very big factor here: the roulette exists primarily to create a pool of players that can be used to assemble a party when someone directly queues for a dungeon.

Your healer friend would have most likely been recruited to join a party that already had both DPS slots filled by people waiting in a specific dungeon queue.

Ouch. I hope it doesn't happen again!

Most cutscenes should allow queue acceptance if it pops during the scene. The only ones I think that do not allow it are the long sequence ones that generally capped off a content update that have a warning before even starting them.
