The Sad State of Dungeons

After running dungeons from ARR-SHB, from Minilvl to cheesing. It’s safe to say SHB has the worst crop of dungeons to date. Yes it’s pretty, yes it has decent music but those are more or less shallow stuff that don’t define the experience

What SHB lacks that ARR and a few HW and SB dungeons had was “Role Responsibility” run any instance as a healer and you have your typical Stress and fun factors. Tank and DPS has none. SHB has no navigation obstacles like Doma Caste or Aurum Vale or stray mobs like Hakkue Manor or Wanderers palace so the sole thing your doing is W2W (Wall-to-wall) pop a CD and GG. DPS have even less to really care about. Their aren’t any hostile attacks like Final sting to prioritize in, their isn’t any hostile trash or DPS checks like Pharos or Castrum Albania, no hazards like Darkhold or Quarn, no viral interrupts or stuns like Banish III or Old Coincounter its all the same song and dance.

What someone would say is “why not do min ilvl if you want a robust run?” And to that I say the game does NOT do enough to get players to do them. Their is no Unreal dungeons, no extra benefits or rewards, PF unless your a streamer you’ll likely won’t find a party that wants to run old dungeons in Min ilvl. Roulette are locked in to only have level syncs, once you adjust it to Min ilvl, you cant do roulettes anymore. No request to do them in any form like WT or relic stuff. I for one don’t need a incentive to wipe 12 times to Wanderers palace but most do. And haven’t said that the Min ilvl of new dungeons are still trivial.

This was a minor gripe in SB and it got a helluva lot worse in SHB with fewer dungeons and easier ones to the point of mind numbing. I’m not asking for Savage 4 man, but once you do Min ilvl run of most ARR dungeons you get the idea of what I want the difficulty to be, which is still mild imo just drastically contrast “Expert” roulettes

I can't help but agree with you but I don't really see how you can make them more appealing. Fact is these are 95% thrash pulls with a few AoE to break up your positioning from time to time. Just a chore to get through and get to the actual content that is the story, trials and stuff.

Having extra hazards on the course just makes it annoying. Aurum Vale is kinda an exemple. If there's more chance to wipe then you spend more time in the dungeon and then you don't want to run that dungeon again unless you are forced to.

Aurum vale was the first real test of your metal on the way to endgame. It was where people learned that it was no longer a snooze fest going for dungeons, and in the future they where asked to do more things then just sit and listen to podcasts, eat a sandwich and chat with their friends on Discord, while tanking a dungeon.
The cyclops was the great boss where you suddenly had to keep your eyes open and learn the signals he send you. Something that till now had been spoon fed to players by the developers. Now they threw you for the wolves by letting you have to use the top floor of your body and actually do a bit of thinking.
On top of that it was a dungeon you easily could avoid. Just don't unlock it and you where golden.

Personally I like to see there is a bit more bite to it in the dungeons, then just having to spend 20 minutes being bored for a few tomes. I rather spend my 20 minutes being on my toes and in the end be rewarded with the feeling that it was a job well done. Each party pulled their part off just right and we made it through in the end.

So this go out to all the dungeon devs.
Please, bring back Aurum Vale to its state before telegraphed attacks and nerfed bosses. And when you create dungeons in the future. Be creative, do things out of the norm, and try out new stuff. Like the boss in the lvl 65 dungeon where you have to position yourself right to pass.
It is things like the old Aurum Vale and that last mentioned dungeon that makes them fun. The rest just turn in to one same grey mass of something with a titel of dungeon no one really bother to remember. So bring in some sas, bring in some challenge, don't fear to be creative and challenge the players. The victories are sweeter when its been a good fight with a bit of a challenge to the player.

Dungeons like AV are the minimum I wish they'd do with optional 4 or 8 man dungeon challenges. IMHO they should either be fixed-party only or have separate roulette categories so whiny players who like netflix'able content can just not run them.

I recently thought about that as well, modern dungeons are very much streamlined, there are no items you need to pick up or different paths to take to open a gate or anything, only the bosses got a few more mechanics.

If you think Aurum Vale is a bad dungeon, i think the opposite, while the toxic green yellowish tone is realy off-putting, it is one of the very few dungeons with an "open" area where you have a choice how to aproach it.

The fact that we call them trash mobs says a lot. I would give my right arm for a min ilvl roulette. The sheer glee I have as a healer when someone makes me actually hear is great. And like MSQ roulette it's optional so all Netflix WoL don't need to bother.

I'm so tired of the excuse that difficult dungeons will get annoying. BORING DUNGEONS ARE ANNOYING. lol I don't play games to be bored.

It def predates FF14 and is just being repurposed here to describe everything that's not a boss in dungeons and alliance raids. Ive even heard bosses that don't drop chests referred to as trash mobs.
But you're absolutely right. The term we choose to use is pretty telling...

I mean if you really think about it then you should call the dungeon bosses "trash mobs" because they are usually the least dangerous thing in the entire dungeon...unless you only do single pulls.

Depends on the dungeon. Trash pulls can literally be soloed by a DPS in single packs in most dungeons, particularly in older dungeons. Most bosses cannot. If you lose members, dungeon progress halts on bosses, not on trash.

The term trash mob comes from Everquest, according to WoWpedia:

"The term trash mob derives from the term yard trash which was coined in the late 1990s MMORPG Everquest. In that game, a low-level dungeon, Unrest, was composed of a house which contained several bosses, surrounded by a front, side, and backyard. In the yards, there were yard trash. Lower level players shouted for groups to kill yard trash for experience either before they were high-leveled enough to kill the bosses or when all the bosses were camped."

So by definition and etymology, a boss monster cannot be trash. Though there's definitely some, lookin' at you 3rd boss in Pharos Sirius, that I would definitely consider trash.

This is a common and god awful attitude in the community, dungeons are nothing more than tome grinds these days and we need to rethink their role in the game. I still run a few oldies cuz they are fun I can’t name a single one on 80s that I want to run again besides research to gauge how trivial they’ve become. End of the day is they aren’t fun or mechanically interesting and it should be a massive wake up call that most dungeons Min-ilvl’d are 110% more fun than all of the 80s dungeons, I’ve even enjoyed sastasha abit more due to their fluid nature and lack of Gates

I know I'd really like if dungeons occasionally took a break from being three sets of two mob pulls and a greatsword fight in a shower stall, but I don't know how they'd meaningfully change the paradigm up other than just giving you stuff to stun/silence (like the Twinning) or by actually creating variations on boss mechanics so the fights aren't the same every time.

Castrum Lacus Litore's Adrammalech did that in a way that was pretty engaging, but I guess it's probably tough to come up with variations on that that are meaningfully different but still fit the framework of a fight.

I guess the other part of the equation is... are dungeons where we should focus that kind of creative effort or difficulty tuning? They're basically set in stone as giving you some breaks to spam AoE and chew scenery in between bite-sized boss affairs and for the purpose of both leveling dungeons and level-cap expert roulette dungeons it's a formula that works if you just want the EXP or the 90 tomestones a day for 15-20 minutes of work.

I'd just as soon get some other form of content that fills the niche of 'entertaining light/full party challenge stuff' without having to radically shake up what you might expect from a dungeon after basically 80 levels of the same

My suggestions aren’t to redesign them, half the examples I made were from previous dungeons. Again I don’t want 4-man savage or even to rethink the approach.

Dungeons are worth the effort in my eyes, we have had the fewest in any expansion ever in SHB, most content in the game aside from this is platform trials. besides 24 man, dungeons is the only explorative content we got in SHB. And believe it or not a lot of effort was put in the mob design, music, and aesthetic and visuals of the dungeons so it’s not so much “is it worth the effort?” But rather “wasted potential” or “waste of creativity” it’s not rocket science to make trash mobs thought provoking or bosses to be fun. They’ve don’t it before but as our kits get larger dungeons get dummer

Well yeah I don't think it's a bad idea to include stuff like that, basically the only real things you have to pay attention to in this entire expac is like, what, silencing the fuaths in Dohn Mheg and the centaurs in the Twinning, then Mt. Gulg and Pagl'than had walls you could kill? There's maybe one or two instances of things shooting at you while you're killing trash in Amaurot and Matoya's Relict but that's genuinely about it.

I think the only time you really had to pay attention and prioritize a mob was actually Amaurot with the bombs for DPS and the dark elemental for healers too?

All of those things are concepts I'm not opposed to seeing more of, but at the same time if they're gonna change anything I'd hope it's not just that every mob pack gets one extra mechanic for one person to do, you know?

The alternative being the trash mobs do nothing but tickle the tank and stress the healer while the dps spam a few buttons? Which sums up most of 80s runs. And half the time those stuns and interrupts aren’t as vital as banish III or final sting so they are ignorable which makes you wonder what’s the point having any at all if it’s a non-issue? Some twisted facade of cooperation and contribution?

Sure “stun it or die” isn’t complex but surely a balance can be made to have DPS have some responsibility. Pagl’than 2nd boss for example would’ve made a fun trash pull instead idea or how Puppets bunker last room had lasers and balls flying at you as you headed to the final boss. The reason why I detest SHB dungeon design is the toothless approach and lack of cooperation and achievement or lack of interesting situation granted by dungeons unique design. Having one person do one mech isn’t exactly what I seek, but party cooperation and contribution to dangerous situations. Not W2W and spam a rotation

Aurum Vale is a fantastic dungeon pre coincounter nerf (seriously?) biggest drawbacks is it’s lv49 and their isn’t a music theme and some mechanical recycle. Sure a helluva lot more fun than majority of 80s

Can we make the last boss in Keeper of the Lake an entire dungeon? The one dungeon run that makes me the saddest is when we ride on the back of Bismarck at the beginning and get forced to fight one weak mob at a time with full level 80 kits and its like animated training dummies. The mobs get smaller and smaller too. First its three, then two, then a final giant jellyfish and each enemy does one tiny easily avoidable aoe with an insanely long cast bar. It feels like an absolute joke. I was excited to queue as a healer the first time and had nothing to heal and only one damage button to spam. I have never been so disappointed by a dungeon. That underwater travel segment made me wanna quit playing altogether. Thankfully you can pull wall to wall afterward for mild amusement but I never wanna go there ever again as a healer. At least tanks can stun the single aoe every 60 seconds and dps have kits that are entertaining in a vaccum. The storytelling is so rich in the dungeons in Shadowbringers but the fights are so easy it makes you doubt the credibility of Ascians being so powerful if 4 fragmented adventures can drunk and high their way to a treasure chest at the end with ease.

I will always agree with a dungeon revamp post. My hot take is that Haukke Manor, just conceptually and for the potential it has, is the best dungeon in this game. If you actually do a full runthrough of that instance, there's actually a lot of side rooms and just empty space that could have been used for some cute things like, I don't know, lighting various lanterns around the entire dungeon to unlock a hidden room with a secret boss.
point is, I can not disagree with the developer's design philosophy for dungeons more. If we take a look at the "A Realm Reborn revisited, 5 year anniversary" interview with Yoshi P (https://na.finalfantasy.com/topics/21), you can start to see where and why the design shifted to what we have now.

Sorry if the embeds became obnoxiously big. But yeah, just imagine having Beta Tam Tara in the game now. I've imagined a system where leves were reworked into worthwhile content and dungeons became separate from MSQ so their design wouldn't have to be restricted by the need to simplify them so *all* players can pass them with ease. As it is, dungeons feel like worthless content after the first time doing it, made to crap out number go up for roulettes.. Arguably, a waste of the art and concepts that go into them.

(please give Twinning's tycoon another shot it's such a good design/model but the concept of its core mechanic was wasted and as it is it's just an even more boring version of dodging orange shapes)

Honestly? If I could trigger that dungeon by going to it and having it become a solo instance, with say, trusts? I'd do it, right now.

With the influx of new players I've been getting a lot more low level content in my roulettes. Between replaying older content and watching newer players go through it for the first time it actually makes me a bit sad at the current formula of the game. The game is not bad mind you, there is a lot to love. But the game is definitely a product of the times. FFXIV has two sides to it. The single player MSQ content which has the grand story and exploration, then there is the actual multiplayer content that is very utilitarian. Dungeons are basically track fields that encourage you to sprint to each checkpoint and kill everything at once. AOE keeps getting buffed, tanks get infinite enmity from every little thing they do, and healers are able to sustain a tank just from their instant cast spells alone. Raids can be challenging for sure but I feel like they are very uninspired and boring. Oh let me guess a perfectly circular arena with an instant kill wall that is simply floating in the middle of nowhere.

I hate to say it, because the team clearly does what they can with it. You see sparks of cool ideas and set pieces in the background but it's all just set dressing. And it's very clear that the team is working around these limitations. They can't explore new ideas and complex environments. And I know why that is. The team tried to make a very unique arena in the coils of bahamut by having you fight in one of his claws. This idea is absolutely brilliant and I adore it so much. However the game is clearly not built to accommodate that kind of terrain during combat. It caused a lot of problems. Rather than fixing the problem the team decided to simply avoid it forever and only make generic, flat, perfectly square or circular arenas.

They are kind of trapped. On one hand they tried to make content with trash, and some travel to the raid boss. They tried making a weird arena and a lot of players don't want that. They like the hyper optimized meta. Content that is fast is better than content that is deep and involved. People want to be in and out of content in maybe 20 minutes max. You look at old content and you see all these really cool ideas that are never further explored or refined. I feel like if we aren't careful we're going to quickly devolve into WoW and optimize the fun out of everything.

I dont know that particular dungeon, but if its one you must do in order to advance the story, then no. If its an optional dungeon, then I would have no problem with it being hard.

It´s one thing to have dungeons as a MSQ, but it´s another if they´re completely braindead. Of course ppl should enjoy the main story, but it doesn´t help anyone if you just run straight through the dungeon and spam aoe into a big pull. The core aspect "dungeon" fails completely in this game.

Other games did a way better job. Dungeons are a bit more challenging, but you get way better loot to prepare yourself for what is coming next. In some games they´re only optional, but promise rare items. Others do even have harder versions of the original ones to prepare yourself for raids.
But dungeons in FF14 has become a timewaste. I don´t need to run from an invisible wall to another, just to progress in the main story. It´s even a waste of time and efford from the devs. Building up beautiful environments noone will take care for unless you´ll get matched via daily roulette once again in those dungeons. SHB dungeons are even the worst i´ve ever seen in any MMORPG. Battle for Norvrandt ftw!
They´re just boring and don´t bring anything to the player. Then those players start to raid, suck and cry "too hard, pls nerf"... no wonder if you just played low budget content before and relied on the simplified classes and mechs.

(And tbh... i´ve never played any other MMO where loot has become so useless. I can run with my level 70 gear easily to level 80. A dungeon might takes 2 minutes longer because i miss stats for DPS, but that´s all. Even in old Roulette - Raids with an Alt i can sit on 20k max HP while the rest of the party has 40k+. I´ll still survive and do my job. It´s ridiculous.)

Then do it with trusts? This is a ongoing trend but I hate when the game suppresses it’s creativity to try to be too broad.

New flash! Their are no optional dungeons anymore! Which probably won’t change sadly and that should be the call to really try to make dungeons amazing not make them even easier. With all the mechs and junk why bother if it’s this remedial? Why even have mechanics why even have dungeons ?

What about The Twinning and Akadaemia Anyder?

As much as I enjoy engaging gameplay, the last thing I want is a bump to dungeon complexity. Not for lack of an interest in having more to do as a tank or anything like that, but simply because adding complexity to something that the roulettes are going to shove me into with a bunch of random, very likely new, players greatly increases my odds of having to requeue through no fault of my own. I've even taken to playing paladin, something I used to outright hate, over my preferred tanking job simply to be able to avoid wipes when the healers inevitably kill themselves by standing in the very clearly marked bad on the ground.

Now if we're talking optional stuff? Sure, throw it at me. I'd love to see the game gain something similar to WoW's M+ content, where you take on more challenging dungeons and are rewarded with gear appropriate to the difficulty of the task you faced.

This is actually the bad attitude the game sows in the ppl´s head. As i´ve said, imagine the game would force more from beginning. Those newcomers would learn way more than "don´t stand in the orange circle". Sadly i still meet ppl at 60 who can´t stack with the stack marker. But this is actually the games biggest issue. It doesn´t force anything, so ppl don´t even try to give their best until they come in contact to the raiding scene via friends or fc´s.
When i started MMORPG`s i was a newbie by myself. But i learned and learned and learned over the time. This is not needed in FF14 that much and it makes dungeons what they are. Boring af , someone will carry anyway.

I know I've inadvertently carried some thoroughly incompetent people through Savage, so I don't think "a bump to dungeon complexity" would make people learn.



Also would putting more of that learning upfront be the right place for it? After all, like you said

The learning curve in FF14 is pretty slow and sometimes not even existend. Of course the first dungeon shouldn´t be a game killer, but having more complex dungeons within the time, which force the players to use their brain to beat the boss + a real reward and not just useless gear, would do a lot probably. But tbh, the first 3 are laughable even for newcomers and new skills appear way too late. Having bosses where you NEED to afk as non tank is a joke too.

I know a bunch of players who haven´t tried raiding for years or FF14 is their first MMORPG. Now they kill every tier and even prog ultimates, just because someone helped them a bit. They´re still casuals, but found fun to prog something.
It is a complete design flaw, that ppl are able to press "easy pls" buttons or run braindead through dungeons. Ppl will start the endgame, get fckd and say "It´s too hard for me, bye." , just because they haven´t learned anything on their long way. Dungeons and class quest should help the players to grow and they should prepare them for the next gamestep. But it just don´t happen.

(That players don´t use their brains and eyes, but checking out million guides for everything is another thing.)

EDIT: And yes, harder dungeons would definately cause player interactions with the group most of the time to learn, to talk about strategies, to give advice, whatever. If a newbie dies in a current dungeon, nobody tells "you should do XY". The boss will fall anyway and the newbie will go on with his MSQ without even thinking about his mistakes.

1. A bunch of bosses can be solo´d by tanks and healers. But the supreme one is probably the slime in the coppermine. The afk one with the bomber. I´ve had some experienced friends who tried this game and stopped playing after doing the first 2-3 dungeons. Too less skills, to low budget.

2. If you fail any solo content you get the "easy / very easy" option since SHB. On the other hand you can ignore a lot content and go unsynced later. Or my fav is that you get the good old raidbuff after every wipe, even in current content since 2 months now?!
NPC runs with Thancred and Co. can´t fail too, they just take some time so.

3. Well it´s a sidefact which cause such braindead dungeons and other content too. Just ignore it.
